Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire is a 1996 multimedia project created by Lucasfilm. The idea was to create a story set between the films The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and to explore all commercial possibilities of a full motion picture release without actually making a film. The venture was intended to reinvigorate interest in the franchise ahead of the theatrical Special Editions of the Star Wars trilogy released the following year.
Several products were released, including a novel, a junior novelization, a comic book series, a video game, a soundtrack, trading cards, role-playing games, posters, model kits, Micro Machines toys, statuettes, vinyl dolls, and a series of action figures and vehicles. The story introduces Rebel ally Dash Rendar, who aids the heroes in their attempt to liberate the frozen Han Solo from bounty hunter Boba Fett. Meanwhile, Darth Vader continues the search for his son, Luke Skywalker, whom crime lord Prince Xizor attempts to kill in his plot to replace Vader at the side of Emperor Palpatine.

Please make more of these. There's not a lot of star wars content creators that talk about the real world history of star wars instead of the lore based history. It's fun
Xizor needs to be made canon again. Would love to see him show up in Bad Batch…
He is mention in the Crimson Reign comic so he is in canon.
I don't want Xizor to be soiled by that shitty kids show
@@DarkraiNewmoon his species aren't canon which kinda sucked. Would be nice to have seen them in the clone wars or something
@@loyalcompanion2104 They are Canon and they were introduced into Canon in The Clone Wars. Black Sun are a major player in the Shadow Collective. They've also appeared in Rebels and several books/comics.
@@DarkraiNewmoon He's not mentioned, he appears in the flesh. Qi'ra has a holocall with him.
According to Pablo Hidalgo, Shadows of the Empire came to be due to the Episode I release date being pushed back a few years. Lucasfilm had already made several licensing deals for a movie that was no longer happening on schedule so Shadows was developed to fill the void. Hence it being considered a movie marketing campaign without the movie.
Ooooh! Happy birthday to me!
Thanks Greedo!!
The nostalgia you have for this game I have for Mario 64, star wars the phantom menace, dead rising 2, and the original star wars battlefront game from 2004...what I just listed have such an emotional impact on my life i genuinely cry when I'm confronted with any of them, I was born in 1995
Being 39 I totally feel the nostalgia hit with this. Getting your mind blown by an N64 AND flying a snowspeeder was like a dream come true. I’d love this story to be picked up again.
The soundtrack that was made is fantastic, I love listening to it whenever I can.
90's kid here who barely remembers their childhood in the 90's, but I do remember the Shadows of the Empire. The action figures and the multiple versions of the novel. The "non kid" version of the novel was one of my first big girl books. It felt so fresh too. Luke Skywalker doing martial arts! I hate CGI fake actors but I would put up with it if I could get a Disney+ Shadows of the Empire miniseries with deepfaked OT characters
Great history lesson HG! I knew Shadows of the Empire was a big deal after watching some of your streams but man I had no idea it was THIS BIG! From books, to toys, to video games, etc. Amazing!
That wry HelloGreedo sense of humor and measured insight is exactly what the doctor ordered.
Shadows of the empire paved the way for things like The old republic and the High Republic so for that I thank it.
Totally. Same the Clone Wars and The Force Unleashed multimedia projects. Happy we have The High Republic doing it now as I've missed the multimedia project days and nice to have them back after nearly a decade's absence.
Hey Dude and 3 Ninjas in your opening video. I love you Greedo!
I miss the Expanded Universe when we were getting these kind of stories
I'm around the same age and this is also the period of Star Wars I'm most nostalgic for. Back when the prequels were just a rumor and Anakin Skywalker's backstory was shrouded in mystery. I remember daydreaming endlessly as a kid with wonder about what the Old Republic must have been like and what happened to the Jedi, or who Boba Fett was. Star Wars just felt different back then. We were only given bits and pieces and that actually made it more compelling, more mysterious. And more fun!
One minor correction: the YT-2400 that appears in Rebels isn't The Outrider, even though it is the same class.
Shadows was my second N64 game at the beginning of my childhood star wars journey. Dash Rendar has a special place in my heart and I hope they bring him back into new canon in a bigger way than just slight mentions
I also used to be TERRIFIED of Wampas. I hated the sounds they made
SotE was my first N64 game, I got it for X-mas in 96. We're almost the same age so we were def playing (and loving) SotE at the same time, lol.
P.S. Xizor IS canon again, he got a mention in a comic!!
This game and Star Wars Rogue Squadron were the first Star Wars games I ever played and also the first expanded universe type story telling I was exposed to. It made me realize Star Wars was no longer just some cool films I really liked but an extremely dense and endlessly expansive universe that I could always go to for a source of entertainment. And for better or worse that is to me what Star Wars is 🙏🏻
Makes my day when a new HG video drops & it’s about one of my favorite projects in Star Wars history! Fantastic work.
Love this style of video from you man! I’m close in age to you and often feel pretty similarly about SW old and new. I hope you do some more like this one about other content from around this time period.
The Nostalgia Dance
I'll get right on that
I was 19 when I got it on N64. Damn fun game, picked up the figure line, and novel, soundtrack, I did have the Xizor statue.
I wanna say I have the figures, book, and soundtrack still.
I ADORE the outfit Luke is wearing on the cover of the novelization. What can I say, I'm a sucker for a good vest.
I actually wouldn't mind seeing Dash Rendar put back in canon. Him and Kyle Katarn.
i had an action figure of dash rendar for well over a decade without knowing for sure if it was a star wars toy or not, had no idea who it was supposed to be
13:47 A wave of nostalgia just hit me. I actually had this toy when I was a child in the early 2000s and was so obsessed with it . I didn't know about shadows of the empire at the time so I think I just assumed it was a random wookiee warrior from Revenge of the Sith
Love the intro. It reminds me of when I was driving my 1995 Ford Explorer through Kansas. Weird trip.
I know you're primarily a Star Wars channel, but now you need to do a 3 Ninjas video, just because you included it in the intro. A Hello Greedo Nostalgia Review or Deep Dive series would be amazing
Omg a HelloGreedo video that’s not a stream 😭😭 I love when this happens!
What a nice surprise
There also was a conclusion comic book for Shadows of the Empire… it was awesome. The Game, the Novel, & the Comics- it was an original story within the Star Wars Cannon…. I love this 1 & Dark Empire Comic the best.
I would buy that encyclopedia set, if it didn't include the sequels
I was there for all of it and it was amazing. It was the biggest thing since ROTJ at that point. So for me it was the biggest SW thing to happen when I was old enough to enjoy it
I was hoping they would make a shadows of the Empire movie... It was a fun ride
Love this! For some silly reason, I've decided to try to aquire 100% of the SotE merchandise. It's been a challenge!
I loved the retro’80s/‘90s montage intro. I’m going speak a great Star Wars sacrilege, I never played Shadows of the Empire or read any of it in any other medium/media.
All my nerd friends at the time told me to try it, and it was on my radar, but alas, I was a PlayStation 1 guy. My PC (at the time) didn’t have remotely the power for it. So I missed this one completely.
*raises a glass*
Here’s to the one that got away…
A story so great that it exceeded the original story and became referenced in other EU material: Kothlis appears in Rogue Leader, the Shadows-design for the Bothen Spies and the wookiee bounty hunter both appear in the OG Battlefront games and, the cherry on top, Black Sun in the Clone Wars 🤟
I must now own that Leia/Xizor card...
I had a double pack with Boba Fett & IG-88 ,i was so happy the day i found one, i would visit the dozen or so toy shops in the city regularly looking for that illusive double pack as it was hard to find, Xizor & Vader packs were everywhere (england)
Aaaawe yeah nostalgia trip 🥰🎀🌸
Awesome video
Lol love how the intro gets weirder by the minute
Saintmillion made a longer, more in depth video about shadows of the empire. I would recommend everyone watches that
I was very young but I’m sure I had some of the miniatures back then.
Leia and Xizor totally banged.
I loved the first Star Wars 3D games like Dark Forces and Shadows of the Empire, but was a little pissed off that you had to play with new characters not in the movies. I always wanted to play with Luke, Han, Chewie… instead we got Kyle Katarn and Dash Rendar.
With time Dash would become one of my fave SW characters of all time, and in my head canon Shadows is still on it.
The battle of Hoth marked a before-after for me.
This was good shit. The n64 launch was a time to be alive.
Love the tune you have to your outtros and 0:11-0:36.
But I have no idea what it's called and I want to listen to it fully!
100% agree
I miss the Star Wars of the 80s and 90s. Before the dark times. Before the Disney Empire.
lol this intro is awesome.
They’re all HUGE Dash Rendar fans
I could imagine fighting on the playground over whether Dash was alive or not based on what difficulty you played lol
I didn't like the comic series, but LOVED the sequel "Evolution"
Never beat this game, but it does bring back annoying memories
I love the period when Shadows of the empire was coming out, and I much prefer the N64 version of the cutscenes compared to he pc animations. The encyclopedia on the promotion looked really good, actually.
We need urgent remakes of original star wars games.
Decent remakes that respect the original story at the same time adding new stuff for us to have fun with.
Id love a remake for SOTE in UE5
I still want a movie ...it's been years but I want a movie still lol. Do we need it? Nope!
I read this book!
I played the n64 version all throughout 2000-2002
Why did this video not come up on my feed? Grrr
I wish disney would do this instead of the sequels
i dunno why this game won t launch for me on steam??
It's pretty awesome that the singer for Journey was such a big Star Wars fan and a decent author of a solid EU story. I'm feelin that way that only the young faithfully don't stop believin. (I refuse to apologize for this nonsense)
I have almost everything from SOTE I have the novel, the toys, even the comics (but it's evolution) I'd played the game but I didn't really like it.
4 mins 30 secs before the content began. 😱
91 volumes of detailed made up crap, I'm in !
