  • Some of you requested it so I got it up! Don't know if it's going to survive the copyright checks once I make it public but here's hoping. If it gets taken down, I will get another version up within the next two days.
Big thanks from me to everybody at the EBU and the various delegations that finally brought Eurovision back this year. It turned out to be an excellent and very exciting contest. Congratulations to the winners and actually, everyone who took part.
If you can post comments, please do. Nothing but love to all the artists. All comments are my own opinion, expressed as respectfully as I can with my language skills, whilst still being able to convey what I honestly thought. Please let me know where you agree, disagree or just how you felt about the contest generally.
Thanks for visiting the channel this year! I'll try to get some more content up but obviously, it will be less frequent than during ESC season!

I wish these lists wouldn't rely on studio versions, the live version is the one that matters in eurovision, no matter how much I personally like Roxen's Amnesia I would place it in 30-39 along with omaga for example due to the live performance being so underwhelming. Problem with taking studio version into account is that the voice can be autotuned and changed to sound even better so the ones who can perform live the best should win, not the ones whose songs sound better post edit.

    • @kaleproject3495
      @kaleproject3495  Před 2 lety +6

There's some truth to this. However, it's also not just a singing contest but, a song contest. The quality of the song should be able to prop up an entry despite a not perfect live performance.
To what extent you want to balance these is up to you but in this case, I'm more than ok with how much I like "Amnesia" as a song to keep it at the top. 😂

I think the Spotify/Apple charts show that the quality of the entries this year is probably the best it's ever been, especially in terms of mass appeal.

France has been my winner throughout the whole season but I have to say that after the show Switzerland is the one I keep going back to. I've always thought it was an exceptional song but it still managed to improve live.
Also I completely agree that the imperfections improved Romania's package, they gave it more emotion. Imo it deserved to be in the final

I agree that Greece was undone by its staging - had they staged it like You're the Only One, it would've done better, still it's their best result since 2013. Embers didn't quite spark live but the 0 points is rough for a good song that had a decent performance.

What a show. I loved every inch of it, even though so many of my favourites didnt do well. Everyone brought their A game to the competition so reranking my top definitely took longer than expected but there are some rises and drops for me. a moment to reflect on Roxen though. she definitely was very great on stage and i genuinely did love the concept they had but she really dropped for me because it felt off. its not only the vocals, but also the execution. if you checked out their Live on tape performance, the way they executed that was wayy better than what they did on stage, mainly because it was a smaller stage so it could feel more intimate.
my top 39 (compared with my first ever top 39)
01 Voices (never a doubt that i was gonna hate this. I did have a bit of doubt during rehearsals but the live performance was perfect)
02 Growing Up Is Getting Old (+1) (loved this the first time it came out. only rose a bit because someone dropped)
03 Zitti e buoni (+2) (the perfect winner. Love to see another rock song winning ESC. been supporting them since sanremo)
    04 Discoteque
05 Tick-Tock (+10) (im asking the same question with you, what the hell happened? it got 9th with jury and 10th with televote but got 11th in the end)
06 10 Years (+4) (pretty much got what i asked for. amazing and quirky staging from them. good thing that it didnt look awkward)
07 Russian Woman (+26) (WHAT a grower. I came from hating this song(i commented on your russian nf vid about it) to me loving it a lot. hopefully this is Russia's turning point)
    08 Dark Side (-2)
09 Omaga (-2) (I agree with you with the song but honestly the staging was quite a letdown. Benny clearly didnt felt confident and missed some notes)
10 Loco Loco (+9) (they were honestly goddamn great. I wasnt too keen on them last year but damn they proved me wrong)
11 Embers (+6) (I actually love the staging on this one so i was genuinely surprised this flopped so badly)
12 Set Me Free (+18) (my first top 39 was before the revamp. I love the song a lot now. love Eden's whistle notes)
    13 Je me casse (-5)
    14 Adrenalina (-1)
    15 Karma (+1)
    16 Voilà (+5)
17 Shum (+17) (Grew on me a ton, same with Russia. if you want a rave party song, this is it)
18 Tout l'univers (-16) (it started to fall off me after a while and the staging didnt help at all. Gjon still had one of the best vocals)
19 The Wrong Place (-5) (despite the sheer professionalism they brought on stage, it definitely felt like a NQ for me. surprised it Qd)
    20 Fallen Angel (+2)
21 Amnesia (-12) (I do love the song and i do love Roxen but my girl didnt feel confident at all. sadly a deserved NQ)
22 Vincent Amen (+10) (after seeing it on stage, i realised just how much i would love this. a bit disappointed with Vincent's vocals but it was perfect all round)
    23 Last Dance (-3)
    24 Maps
25 Øve os på hinanden (+11) (also pretty big grower for me. great show ender in semi 2. wouldve definitely preferred this over Moldova)
26 Love Is On My Side (+1) (deserved to be in the left side in the end. everytime portugal does jazz, they do it well)
27 El Diablo (-16) (after what you said about El Diablo, most of the trash pop songs fell a lot. this kinda got saved by staging and Elena)
    28 Voy a quedarme (-3)
    29 Birth of a New Age (-3)
30 Mata Hari (-12) (Before rehearsals it was in 35th so this was actually a rather big rise. the perfected the ending)
    31 The Lucky One (-8)
32 The Moon Is Rising (-20) (why the hell did i have this top 20? it feels like a rushed Aminata song, its not great at all. staging didnt help)
33 Technicolour (+2) (starting to enjoy the song a bit now. actually did a great job with the live on tape. still wouldnt care about it)
    34 Here I Stand (+3)
    35 I Don't Feel Hate (-4)
36 Sugar (-8) (the fact that this got left side just shows how much power Kirkorov has. wouldve been fine if it had sensual staging but it was too safe and shouldve NQd)
    37 The Ride (-8)
    38 Amen

Not much really changes on my list except maybe Russia and Romania taking a slight hit, while Denmark and Australia move up a bit more. My Top 5 probably ends up consisting of Ukraine, Portugal (maybe), Finland, Italy, and Norway (still my top pick). The only problem is, in the end, where in other years i have trouble picking a top whatever cuz i really like so many songs, i'm having trouble for a different reason: I can't think of many i really wanna go to bat for besides the five i mentioned. Maybe San Marino? Belgium? Keeping Romania toward the top? I dunno. Its possible real-life business has gotten in the way of my ESC journey this year and the usual afterglow.
So glad Italy won though. i was keeping track of televote points and subtracting totals as it went along to see who still had a realistic shot at winning and once France took that huge chunk, it was a done deal for Italy. Barbara only needed about 160 by that point to freeze Switzerland from the top spot and she took more than that, obvz. I just found the two french songs enjoyable, but kinda pretentious, but i especially didn't want the guy who wrote "Arcade" to win AGAIN (not so soon at least).
Here's hoping Irama wins OGAE Second Chance so my favorite track of the year can win something too and make it a banner year for Italy.

Honestly, as the results were coming in...I was convinced Iceland were winning. In my mind, there was no way they'd get less than 300 from the televote so when it was announced, I was genuinely shocked. I would've been fine with any of the non-Maltese jury faves taking it...but maybe not so much with France. 😂

I finally finished my 2021 list. While a lot of stuff remained similar as before, there are a few shake-ups. Overall, 2021 is my second highest rated ESC year, and there are some big shoes to fill in 2022. 😊
    39. Georgia (2.5/10) - Without a proper hook, the atmospheric composition needed some warmth to work. Sadly, Tornike's stage presence feels cold, and even aggressive.
    38. Slovenia (3.5/10) - Major ''How you're doing, fellow kids'' vibes in the revamp. Ana has an amazing voice, but that's the only major asset here.
    37. Estonia (4/10) - There is nothing explicity wrong with this, but there is nothing explicitly right with it either. While Uku does a fine job, the song leaves me indifferent.
    36. Latvia (4.5/10) - It's a chaos, but I feel like Samanta is owning it. Her attitude is positive, so even if the composition is an overload of sound, at least it feels authentic.
    35. Israel (4.5/10) - Slick production and Eden's outstanding vocals somewhat hide how this song is lyrically confusing and repetitive. While it aims to be both entertaining and emotional, it becomes annoying instead.
    34. North Macedonia (5/10) - I guess the theater kid in me embraced this more after awhile. The song is a bit messy, and quite cheesy, but I loved how comfortable Vasil felt on stage.
    33. Austria (5/10) - I love Vincent's vocals, but the song is never reaches the momentum. The lyrics are overreaching into an interesting territory, but never feel committed to exploring the subject.
    32. Poland (5.5/10) - Bless this mess! It's so mediocre and badly performed that it becomes enjoyable in a guilty pleasure sort of way. In all fairness, this deserved to stay in the semi, but I still sometimes listen to it.
    31. United Kingdom (5.5/10) - When curious fans years later re-discover the first double nul-pointer of the new system, they'll be disappointed. This song isn't bad at all, only tad static, and not as striking as most others.
    30. Serbia (6/10) - I'd call it an average song for a style that isn't neccesarily mine. However, Hurricane are effortlessly bringing this up by three notches with their fantastic performance. A 6 from me is like a 10 from someone who digs this style.
    29. Portugal (6/10) - It's quite of a grower for me. While I'm still not enamoured with its repetitive chorus, I finally saw some beauty in the atmosphere it creates in its loop.
    28. Australia (6.5/10) - I came to the conclusion that I like this song, but I feel like Montaigne is performing it way too seriously. Based on the lyrics and the beat, this should have been a fun, slightly cheesy song. It's the deadpan delivery that stops it from becoming more.
    27. Sweden (6.5/10) - As safe and as professional as one'd expect from Sweden in most of their recent years. Tusse elevates this material a lot, and I really like the bagpipes.
    26. San Marino (6.5/10) - This is a huge upgrade for San Marino from every song since 2014. The song itself is solid and fun, but misses the strong charisma which Senhit herself has in spades.
    25. Cyprus (7/10) - A slick corporate product designed for one to ''fall in love with the sin''. I kinda dig it, even if I see how its calculative aspect certainly dominates it. Elena did a good job with the choreography.
    24. Denmark (7/10) - They successfully accomplished everything they came here to do. They brought some much needed fun! Still, I cannot say that these goals are very ambitious. They should have qualified.
    23. Albania (7/10) - Not only that Anxhela has one of the best female voices here, but the song itself brings drama to match it. However, I feel like Albania needs to explore different styles, because if you are going to continue with the same, at least up your game. This is keeping it safe.
    22. Ireland (7/10) - Such a charming little entry! I appreciate Lesley's fun personality, and her songwriting skills. The performance was perhaps not as strong, but this still is a good song.
    21. Spain (7.5/10) - A very honest and lovely ballad. Spain should experiment with style more, but I cannot deny that these ''telenovela ballads'', when done right, do it for me. Blas' amazing falsetto is certainly an additional asset.
    20. Netherlands (7.5/10) - These lyrics are so strong! I kinda feel bad for putting it ''so low'', but as of now, I am yet to warm-up to the linear nature of its chorus. I like the verses much more.
    19. Finland (7.5/10) - These guys really make me appreciate this youthful angst more. While I find the other angsty rock song much more layered, I cannot help but liking this, and smiling along.
    18. Moldova (8/10) - A bit of a ''I hate myself'' moment here. While I recognize Natalia's vocal struggles in the semi, I find this song to be such a hoot! It's unpretentious, fun, with some subtle dark undertones, and her bubbly personality fits it perfectly.
    17. Malta (8/10) - It is hard not to be in awe of Destiny's poweful vocals! I like the electro-swing instrumental, as well as the core message. I still feel like it's slightly overreaching in how grand it wants to be. In any way, it's a good song, and Malta deserved its success.
    16. Azerbaijan (8/10) - Efendi has proven to be a queen of guilty pleasures in recent years. Her songs are so goofy, yet so musically well made, that I just love them. Let's go!
    15. Czech Republic (8/10) - One of the best bops of this year, full of joy and good energy. Even if Benny lacked some energy on stage, he still oozed with all the right positive attitude.
    14. Greece (8/10) - What a cool throwback! Not only that Stefania has proven to be a match for some much older singers, but Greece has also proven that they can achieve a great result serving different musical styles. I personally dig the staging, as it feels retro.
    13. Lithuania (8.5/10) - One of the most steady heavy likes for me. It's a high quality entry, balancing just the right amounts of quirkiness and professionalism.
    12. Iceland (8.5/10) - Another really well deserved success! Gagnamagnid is such an energetic and relatable group, and it's a pleasure watching them perform! The lyrics here are effortlessly cute.
    11. Croatia (8.5/10) - This is my favorite Croatian entry since 2016, and Albina absolutely owned it on stage! As a package, this is my most shocking NQ! It still is a radio hit over here, and deservingly so!
    10. Germany (8.5/10) - I really needed an entry like this for awhile - charming, relaxing, tad spicy, but very positive in a whole! Jendrik's stage presence is phenomenal! I really hoped that the audiences would appreciate it more, but it doesn't diminish my love for it.
    9. Romania (9/10) - I absolutely love a dreamy atmosphere which goes so well with layered lyrics. Sure, Roxen's performance was not the most polished, but it was still good, as it delivered all the needed emotions on stage.
    8. Norway (9/10) - Lovely timeless instrumental, relatable lyrics, and even its cheesy and dramatic performance create such a heartfelt package! Slowly it became one of my top favorites.
    7. Russia (9/10) - One of the bravest and most authentic songs of the year, and beyond. Manizha is an absolute force of nature, which makes this feminist song feel both powerful and positive!
    6. Belgium (9.5/10) - Exactly the kind of dark, sultry, brilliantly written entry I needed to have in my collection. Their experienced and slick perforance only emphasizes how this song is exactly in the right place for me!
    5. Bulgaria (9.5/10) - I love the gentle instrumental, the heartfelt performance, and the inspired staging, but it's the heart-wrenching lyrics that make me love it as much! This is some heavy and layered material, and I am here for it.
    4. Italy (10/10) - I have always loved this song to a degree, but now I adore it. One of the best winners of this century yet, and further proof that Italy knows how to serve quality on ESC!
    3. France (10/10) - I love dramatic piano ballads, I love classical French chansons, I love intense circus-like performances. Add the fact that Barbara slays on stage, and how personal the lyrics feel, and we basically have perfection.
    2. Ukraine (10/10) - In a heavy competition, I'd dare to say that this is the most unique entry Ukraine has ever sent, as well as the most original composition of 2021. I cannot help but being fully enchanted by this masterpiece.
    1. Switzerland (10/10) - With this absolute gem, Gjon and Switzerland have won my heart this year! I am in love with the mesmerizing instrumental, deep lyrics, creative staging, as well as this man's out of this world vocals. Likely the only person who'll retain the title of my personal winner two years in a row.

#37 - Poland - Okay, I'm very in agreement. This might be my lowest rated song, I've already heard songs like this a million times and there's really nothing special about it.
#36 - Australia - Back to the disagreement: I really like this one. It might even be in my top 10 (had I ever drawn up a top 10 list). It suffers from feeling a bit disjointed, but she's a great singer, I enjoy her runs and also, it's once again a different style of song.
#35 - Belgium - We agree somewhat here. I don't much "feel" this song, but I would have definitely placed it higher on the list compared to many of the other songs. It's not quite my style, but it's more intriguing than many of the other songs.
#34 - Slovenia - First of all, this song is misnamed. It should be called Hallelujah. But okay. Other than that, I place this song in a similar position as you do. I would like it more if it felt more like a gospel song and less like a cliché ballad dressed up like a gospel song. Her voice is amazing, though.
#33 - Portugal - Not my favourite but I really enjoyed it.
#32 - Israel - She has a good voice, but it's one among many completely by the rules produced for radio songs this year. I keep forgetting what it sounds like.
#31 - Albania - The closest we got to a Balkan ballad this year and definitely a qualifier for me.
#30 - Georgia - I liked this enough to want it to qualify. Could have been different in a different year; this year didn't really have any similar songs which of course made this one stand out in comparison to the other songs.
#29 - Moldova - I'm not saying she's a bad performer, but although I enjoy the brief instrumental interludes, while catchy, there's really nothing even remotely original about this song.
#28 - Ireland - Bland and forgettable. It's a nice song, but it is like a million other songs, and even worse, some of these songs are in this competition. I've already forgotten the melody. Again.
#27 - Denmark - Another song that puts a smile on my face. It's not a great song and it sounds dated, but in a charming way. I definitely wanted this to qualify.
#26 - San Marino - Catchy but my comment about Moldova applies to this one as well. It's so standard that a computer could have written it. Actually, I'm not convinced that a computer did not write it. And I actually prefer Moldova over this, it has a couple of more interesting aspects to it in some places, and this one is just by the book.
#25 - Estonia - Having gone through a traumatic breakup recently, the lyrics really do speak to me, but that doesn't save this song. Just like with Ireland, I keep forgetting the melody because it's just completely cliché.
#24 - Malta - This song is slowly growing on me. It was always catchy and she's a great singer, and I might be able to forgive the blatant rip-off of *both* Israel 2018 and Czech Republic 2018 enough to agree it deserved a place in the final.
#23 - Finland - I enjoyed this (I like this kind of music) but I wouldn't have ranked it much higher than you did. I always enjoy it when a couple of rock/metal songs are competing in Eurovision, but the rock or metal entries have a tendency of being very weak/safe and/or very standard. This is one of the better ones, but still fairly cliché.
#22 - Cyprus - I feel like I'm repeating myself, but like with San Marino or Moldova, this might be catchy but it's not very original. I definitely wouldn't have qualified it (nor any of the aforementioned songs), although this one has a couple of elements that are at least interesting (Mamacita and particularly the part of the song that sounds like a children's mock song).
#21 - The Netherlands - We're in agreement on the Netherlands. I would have qualified it (even if it hadn't had an automatic spot in the finals) but not placed it very highly, and it's beginning to grow on me.
#20 - Sweden - We're so much in agreement here that I wonder why you're placing it at this spot? I definitely wouldn't have qualified it, because it's catchy but like the Irish entry, it might as well have been written by a computer.
#19 - Bulgaria - I enjoyed this enough to want it to qualify for the final. Not much more than that, but
#18 - Azerbaijan - I don't know why you say the song is (objectively) not good. It doesn't feel like super high quality, but I also find it really difficult to judge the quality of ethnic elements that I am so unfamiliar with. I also find it incredibly enjoyable.
#17 - North Macedonia - I don't dislike deep meaningful ballads. From the first chord, I expected to enjoy this song. And then I ... didn't. Something about it feels so artificial, so "faux meaningful" to me. It's the kind of song I would usually love, but this one failed to reach me, and I didn't even want it to have a place in the final.
#16 - Spain - I don't know why it is, but Spain just consistently sends songs I completely fail to identify with. This one is not an exception.
#15 - Austria - I'm Austrian, so while I do like this one enough to want it to qualify to the final (much worse songs certainly qualified in my opinion) I can't be sure that I'm not a bit biased in this regard.
#14 - France - This is definitely in my top 10, although it's a very cliché chanson, it's a charming one!
#13 - Norway - Don't love this one, though. The performer is very charismatic and the performance is good. The song's nothing special, though, I wouldn't have put it in the final.
#12 - Croatia - I do understand what happened. Now, (upon my fifth or so listen), I'd have qualified it as well, but it took me some listens to appreciate the nuances of this song. I had initially classified as just as much a cliché as 10 other songs and it took me a couple of listens to appreciate it more.
#11 - Iceland - Ah, I really enjoy this one. His vocals are great, the songwriting is completely fine, and I love the concept.
#10 - Lithuania - I wouldn't have placed this as high as you have it, but it is a genuinely clever and good song.
#09 - United Kingdom - Well, the agreement we were in couldn't last ;) I'm sure it is qualitatively an okay song, but you spoke about formulaic earlier when discussing a different entry and this song is the definition of bland and formulaic. There's nothing wrong with it in the same way there's nothing wrong with a lot of these songs, but it's just not an interesting entry.
#08 - Italy - I agree with every word you wrote about this, it's an authentic entry and an exciting winner. It's not my winner, but I ranked it number 3. (I've wanted Italy to win I think three times in the last six years, so of course they win the one year where I didn't have them at the top of my list). It's also one of the better rock songs in recent Eurovision history in my opinion.
#07 - Czech Republic - I would never have qualified this and I'm glad it didn't. For one thing, this is just not the kind of music I enjoy and it feels very repetitive and uninteresting to me (although I do not know enough about this kind of music to judge its objective quality). For another, I found the lyrics to be really off-putting.
#06 - Ukraine - This is my second favourite entry this year. A lot of energy, great vibe, great performance, and just really a stand-out song.
#05 - Serbia - I didn't like it at all at first (which honestly kind of surprised me; I usually enjoy the Serbian entries) but it's slowly growing on me. I still wouldn't place it anywhere near as high on my list.
#04 - Greece - Nope, I would not have let this get even close to the final. Like with like ten other songs this year, it's a nice song but just ... this song already exists a million times in this world. And it's not at all different from the other 999,999. Also, the singer was slightly off-pitch a couple of times.
#03 - Switzerland - Ah, my personal winner this year! Beautiful song, beautiful vocals, there was something intriguing about the song's vibe. It's not my "favourite winner" - there have been entries that I placed on top of my list in the last few years that I was much more excited about than this one (Italy 2015 or Ukraine 2016 or Portugal 2017 for example) but out of these 39 songs, this is definitely my favourite.
#02 - Russia - I also really enjoy this one. It's my number 4 entry. I might have been higher without the English elements in it, which I find a bit out of place, but other than that a really great, bold, exciting entry.
#01 - Romania - I get why you like this so much. I wanted it to qualify and do enjoy it, but wouldn't have put it in my top 10.

I was really looking forward to this, as I have some thoughts to share after the show. (Top will be split in two comments because CZcams is a bit of a bitch)
    39. ESTONIA (=)
A lot of things changed over the course of ESC weeks, a lot of entries have grown on me, some had great stagings, some had awful stagings, but one thing remained stable - The Lucky One was still very, very bad. But, what's even worse, it became insanely forgettable as well. The empty staging, Uku barely singing, and the song still being the shitty Lazarev reject with an 80s flair - all of these did a great job in making sure Estonia doesn't qualify.
    38. POLAND (=)
This was...exactly as bad as expected. I don't even have much to say, other than the live-on-tape perfomance was surprisingly decent for this one.
    37. SERBIA (-2)
The live was fine, but the song remained an incoherent mess. Apologies.
    36. CYPRUS (+1)
Wow, Cypriot representatives can actually sing themselves and not hide behind the extensive backing track! Colour me impressed. The song is still pretty unremarkable even when compared to other Cypriot uptempos, but it did not fuel me with burning hatred like Fuego or Replay, so that's a start.
    35. GREECE (-6)
HOLY SHIT THIS STAGING IS AWFUL WHO THE FUCK APPROVED OF IT. It looks insanely cringey and ridiculous, and the song is still nothing remarkable WAIT HOW THE FUCK DID IT GET TOP 10
    34. NORTH MACEDONIA (+2)
Listening to this more made the structure feel slightly more coherent. And Vasil has done a great job in his live performance. This entry was always doomed to flop tho.
    33. DENMARK (+1)
This has become a pretty enjoyable retro number with a nice song attached to it. Not a masterpiece and not a cute banger like YES, but not as hate-inducing as it once was to me.
    32. AUSTRALIA (-2)
Despite going lower, I actually enjoy this song way more than I used to. I still feel like the changes from verse to chorus are too abrupt, but the song had its charm, and the staging amplified it. Interesting how out of 28 points Montaigne got 15 were from Russia and Ukraine. Perhaps we're nostalgic for this kind of music.
    31. SPAIN (+2)
Wow, Spain did everything in their power to save this. The a capella first verse is a great move, and Blas sounded really great in general. And the song grew on me as well, unfortunately, almost all other songs grew on me as well. Low result was definitely undeserved.
    30. NORWAY (+2)
TiX is an amazing personality, and even the song grew on me. I still don't really feel the staging (but the moment with glasses was really great), but Europe felt it instead, and that's what matters.
    29. ISRAEL (+2)
As more time passes by, I enjoy this song more and more. Eden's charisma and vocals are absolutely out of this world, and the staging, while at first seemed pretty mediocre, ended up pretty good.
    28. SLOVENIA (=)
Ana has tried her hardest to save this pretty uneventful ballad, but it was not enough. Still decent performance.
    27. GEORGIA (-11)
Tornike seemed so bored during the whole course of ESC week, I really felt like he'll just leave stage mid-performance. This hurt the presentation a lot, and the song started to slightly grow down for being a bit too stagnant.
    26. ALBANIA (-5)
This has been...remarkably forgettable. Like Albania is one of my favourite ESC countries on average, it'd take a miracle for me to forget about them. Anxhela did a good job and the staging was fine, but this just keeps on falling lower and lower.
    25. ROMANIA (+1)
Well, as I said, Roxen ended up being a bit of a live disaster. Weirdly, after that, the song started growing on me and I started to actually enjoy it a bit. I like the staging and outfits, but the vocals brought the package down.
    24. UNITED KINGDOM (+1)
This has been a very serviceable performance of a pretty decent song. Nothing worthy of nul points from both juries and televote. A shame UK will probably remain stagnant due to this.
    23. LATVIA (-9)
I still really like the song - it's a great k-pop-esque feminist banger. But everything about the live performance is awful - who decided that for an empowerment song about feminism and blood moon the primary colours should be yellow and green and all the dancers should be standing still? The camerawork was really poor as well, but the crown jewel of bad was miss Tina herself. She was in the wrong tone for almost the whole song and it really amplified all the other flaws. A shame, this had a chance to come alive on stage.
    22. CROATIA (+2)
This has been a nice performance of a nice song, but unfortunately, the semi was too packed. At least we have an interesting results anomaly with the song not qualilfying despite being a finalist for both juires and televote now.
    21. IRELAND (-3)
This did everything more or less fine, even Lesley's vocals weren't as bad as some people are making out. But something just prevented this from fully working, sadly. Maybe it's the ending where all the mechanisms are seen?
    20. MOLDOVA (-9)
Mr. Kirkorov, where the fuck are your budgets? You made explosive stagings with wallclmbing, doors and shower stalls in the past, but here it's just a spinning platform?????? Natalia also sounded really poor, tho that was to be expected. The long note at the end tho. Lindita is laughing her ass off while this is being called "the longest note in ESC history".
    19. CZECH REPUBLIC (-4)
SPEAKING OF SOUNDING REALLY POOR. After Vidbir 2020 I expected a strong and charismatic live performance from Benny, but what we got is really tired guy with some really shit breathing. I really have no idea what went wrong here, but something went terribly wrong. A shame, as this song actually managed to climb in my top 10 pre-show.
    18. ICELAND (+5)
This is still better than Think About Things for me, and it really did everything in its power to win. Great staging, charismatic performers, catchy and cute song. Hoping Arny gets well soon!

      17. PORTUGAL (+2)
The Black Mamba are truly the glow-up of this ESC. From sure NQ after they won FdC to top 13 in the final. The staging is amazing and really helps the vibe of the song, and Tatanka sounded as great as usual. The song also grew on me, its instrumental is insanely pretty.
      16. AUSTRIA (+11)
This has taken its time to grow on me, but now I really like it for the depressive vibe. The staging was slightly too simple in my opinion, but Vincent really did his best to make the song work. Shocked juries didn't try to save this.
      15. SWEDEN (+5)
Tusse's live was...not great, I'll put it like that. But the staging, the song and charisma made up for it. Interesting how juries didn't even rank it that high. Wonder why.
      14. BULGARIA (-6)
I still have no idea what this song is about, but the live performance has been really good. VICTORIA's live has surpassed every my expectation, and the staging really created the vibe. It went lower just because everybody else did slightly more.
      13. SWITZERLAND (=)
Gjon is absolutely amazing. Both as a personality and as a vocalist. The song actually grew on me during the live, initially I was slightly turned off by his moves but eventually they didn't stick out as much. This would've made for a good winner (and a better winner than Arcade).
      12. SAN MARINO (+5)
Wow. This was very unfortunate. The staging, the performance - everything was top notch. I really have no idea why did televoters absolutely forget about it.
      11. THE NETHERLANDS (+11)
Could the chorus be a little less repetitive? Yes. Is the song even close to the level of Grow? Hell no. Did it deserve nul points from televote? Hell no as well. The verses are absolutely marvellous and Jeangu sounded very natural to the song. A shame it didn't do that well.
      10. AZERBAIJAN (-1)
During the whole rehearsal week I heard people saying that Efendi is really not good. Well, the live performances proved them wrong - she really gave it her all. The song is still pretty good and the climax *chef's kiss* - top notch.
      9. BELGIUM (+1)
Hoovers ended up not being arrogant dicks, colour me impressed! The staging was pretty good, but I again want to bring up live-on-tape - the wide shots in that were absolutely stunning. Overall got where it need to be.
      8. FINLAND (+4)
This. Fucking. Performance. Like everything about it worked perfectly. Mainly the camerawork, that was absolutely out of this world and contends with Montenegro and Georgia 2016 for the best camerawork for a rock(-esque) performance. The song is still insanely energetic and good that they got Finland to top 10 for the first time since Lordi.
      7. LITHUANIA (-2)
They did everything that they could, and I think they can be happy with the result. I don't have much to say - everything was professional, fun, consistent and just great overall.
      6. GERMANY (=)
There are many likeable contestants this year (Gjon, Tusse, TiX) but Jendrik takes the cake as the most fun and charismatic one. The live was really fun and served as a great pair for the song. A shame about nul points, but he still got some new fans.
      5. RUSSIA (+2)
It felt so odd to absolutely root for my country for once. Everything about the performance was perfect - the dress, the ethnic background, the backing vocalists (Mamas-level charisma), MANIZHA's absolutely pure energy and charisma on stage, and the final part with the women on LED (that's how you incorporate faces on LED correctly). Ninth was a bit too low in my opinion, but there isn't more we could've done.
      4. ITALY (=)
This was the winner performance the moment I first saw it after the first semi-final. Everything about this was just right. I don't have much to say, other than that it's a very deserved winner.
      3, FRANCE (=)
I have even less to say about this than Italy - again, everything is done perfectly, the staging is intimate and emotional and Barbara sounded absoluetly stunning. Deserved runner-up, of course.
      2. MALTA (-1)
It was close. Just a bit more work on the staging to make it slightly more memorable - and easy top 5, 3 and maybe even contention for win. Destiny did a spectacular job on stage, her charisma and vocals are everything. The song is still a banger, but one entry just did everything even more right.
      1. UKRAINE (+1)
Well. This was really something unparalleled. The vocals, the staging, the background, the energy, the music, the everything - just...yes. Glad that there's still a place for folk music in European hearts. Maybe in 2022 more countries will attempt to go outside the box, looking at this year's results? We'll see.

Russia was so good and you guys did great to submit such an entry after the hype for last year's. Winner-wise...I think the big chorus when she sang to the back wall could've had *slightly* stronger backing vocals to give it more power but otherwise, it *felt* like my winner during the final.

Yay, it's here! And yay, I disagree with a lot😂
I certainly expected Latvia to be your last due to her off-key singing (it certainly made them MY last place). Also, I didn't find Romania's performance imperfect, I simply found it bad😅 I liked the song quite much too, but that performance brought her down to #37 for me. I just don't get why she ditched the (beautiful and fitting) sweater for this dress. The song was a qualifier, but they did everything for it to become a non-qualifier. I'm surprised at how much better both Latvia and Romania are in their on-tape performances. Croatia, surprisingly was much worse on-tape than in Rotterdam.
Personally, I really don't like what the Nordic countries (minus Finland) brought us this year. Sweden was safe, Iceland's song sounded weak to me (and boy, do I hate "Look how wacky we are" choreos!), Norway was a huge chunk of cliché, and Denmark would be excellent for a bad taste party.
I too think UK's song isn't that bad, but sadly to me he didn't seem like a cool authentic guy, but rather like an old man trying to look young and cool, and it didn't really work.
Surprisingly, my winner is now Greece! The performance was a funny idea that didn't detract from the song too much, and the song is simply amazing, just as her live singing!
And with that, another Eurovision season ends. I hope to see more tops from other years from you in the meantime!

Denmark's performance seems like an alternate reality from the DMGP performance😂 Malta's performance has NOTHING in it and Greece's performance is a lot more usual!
And yeah, moving Roxen that far down IS harsh and I'm sure it was just my initial reaction and it's mot permanent, but after the failed performance there was just nothing there anymore for me. Good that it didn't shock you as much!

Roxen's vocals were objectively not up to par; with her constantly moving and being dragged around the stage, it's no wonder she sounded out of breath in the semi and NQed. The staging being derived from the music video is lovely but it came off as a try-hard approach in the end as well, and she suffered because of it.
However, I think there is one redeeming factor in which Roxen's vocals sound kind of...fragile if that's the right word. I think her delicate and soft, but raspy vocals elevated Amnesia a little live and complimented the message about mental health she was trying to convey on stage. It's a very strange and subjective interpretation, and it's probably a poor excuse for her weak vocals, but I could tell Roxen really engrossed herself with Amnesia's message and how she felt overwhelmed and lost herself because of it, which is told through her voice. Her frail, yet touching delivery may have saved her from placing outside my Top 20 after show.
That long note in the end was pretty good though.

All of what you've said is on point and particularly the second paragraph is my personal take on it. I don't know how much that sort of perspective should influence in a song/performance contest. It's definitely a tricky question.
I guess what I take away from it is that based on the performance, Romania probably played themselves out of winner-contention but the idea that "Amnesia" could go all the way down to NQ is a confusing one for me, considering the quality of the actual song. 😂

I feel like one thing that let a lot of people down was the staging. Both Lesley and Roxanne are great singers but the staging and dance really hurt their vocal performance. I love Lesley but at one point she was basically running on a treadmill while singing live and that was never going to sound her best. Same with Roxanne she sounded out of breath when singing.

    • @kaleproject3495
      @kaleproject3495  Před 2 lety

I think it is a fair point that some of the more ambitious choreography did impact on the vocal performances. There were other "weak" vocals that would've been helped with more static performances than just the ones you mentioned, too.
However, I think another factor is that some countries simply used the pre-recorded backing vocals more effectively than others. 😂
