ESC 2018 Top 43 Ranking With Comments

- Hate to say it but overall, the quality was not that great this year. Nothing really stood out as being of winning quality and literally, no song would have gotten anywhere near the top two from the year before. Most of the stronger songs were lost in the semi finals and the jury voting was particularly ridiculous this year.
This is my aftershow ranking for the entries of the Eurovision song contest 2018 (based on final performance), along with a brief thought about each of the songs.
Please leave comments below about what you agree with or where you think I am wrong but remember, these are my shorthand notes on the songs!

Thanks! Surprisingly, my top didn't change that much this year. I guess the simpler staging everyone had to use made the song quality a bit more important.

I am very happy that such ambitious songs as Inje or For You got so high, but I still like X my heart or Goodbye super top!
All really strong songs. 2018 has very few bad ones to be fair so you can't go too wrong.
Eugent is - and will always be - the King. Search for his rendition of Livin' on a prayer by Bon Jovi. Never heard anyone capable of making so easy to hit Jon's original notes.
I never got over him producing a perfect cover of Rona Nishliu's "Suus". That was equally stunning.
I revisited this contest over the last two days. I think it’s a REALLY strong contest. But the lows are very very low….
Every time I come back to it, I rate it completely differently. There are few great songs, but a lot of good songs. I think it's a strong lineup and a great playlist, but, not a great Eurovision.

More or less i disagree with the whole ranking :D. Having said that i enjoyed reading your thoughts and i am happy you are being truly yourself and not being afraid to share your feelings! Enjoyed the video a lot. Also, i ain't a musican (probably not surprising) but i genuinely thought Germany's vocals were amazing lol xD
2018 is the hardest edition of ESC to rank because there are so few GREAT songs but so many GOOD songs. It's a pretty solid year overall without anything really standing out too much. I have re-rated this edition recently so there are a few changes.
Still not a huge fan of Germany's entry but I have it slightly higher now. It's a vocal approach that isn't for my personal taste. Generally find that my hearing is very sensitive to overly-nasal vocal deliveries. So that might be part of it!

@@felyne1527 But what message exactly? The song is about something pretty specific (and sad!). I actually thought going with the English version of their song or some combination of English/Hungarian would have been a good idea. If not, then some staging that laid out what the song was about.
I agree with you about Mercy though. I really thought that was going to be a top five song until I saw that the staging had nothing to do with the song!
I don't agree with some of the placings but I agree on 90% of your comments, the comment that I disagree most on though is The Netherlands were you said it was a professional performance, Outlaw in 'em is my second favorite of 2018 but I personally think the staging sucked.
Netherlands-wise, I wasn't a fan of the staging or anything. "Sucked" is a bit strong for me but I agree with where you're at. I meant more that Waylon himself came across as somebody who's done this a million times and was very comfortable.

It's quite an interesting top with one song I like, followed by a song I don't...and so on and so on.
Since doing this ranking, I've really warmed to the Italian song a lot and do appreciate Hungary's effort more than I did. Unfortunately, I still find the German and Australian songs to be pretty dire.
A bit late to comment but Imma do it anyways.
I remember that, in 2018, I thought the song lineup was very strong but, now it strucks me as an average year tbh.
I enjoy around 20 songs but I didn't have a clear favourite until recently. Many good songs but not many amazing ones imo.

We disagree a fair amount but opinion differ usually ig. I was also kinda disappointed with the actual results as I'm not a big fan of either Israel, Cyprus or even Austria lol.
My ranking has changed a lot since the contest but I can agree with your overall sentiment. I also enjoy 20 songs but I do have a clear favourite in Albania. However, after that, they all kinda blend into one...where nothing sticks out too much.
Israel, Sweden and Czech Rep aren't in your top 20 and Germany's at the bottom of it...so maybe, our opinions aren't *that* different. XD

Eugent is my winner as well, definitely in my TOP5 favorite Eurovision songs ever and gives me chills every time
This video's pretty old but I think the rankings that you mentioned in your comment are all pretty similar. My last review had Albania (still 1st), Lithuania (4th) and Romania (6th).
My big growers since then are that I now appreciate Bulgaria and Italy a lot more than I did at the time and they're both now safely in my top ten.

Is it bad that San Marino was and still is my favourite? I totally see why it's not liked in general, and yet for some reason I absolutely love it. It touches me. And I'm completely serious.
I don't think there's ever been a year that a song has received 0 televotes so presumably, every year, somebody likes every song (or maybe just friends and family members, I don't know).
Still, I don't know if it's bad that it's your favourite. It's not like you need to be locked up or anything. 😂

I'm a bit sad you put Hungary that low but Georgia! I think Iriao For you is the most underrated perfomance in the whole ESC history. My 1st or 2nd (along with Hungary).
I also don't agree with Malta, Iceland and Azerbaijan. Malta should be higher and Azerbaijan lower beacuse it's too average for me. Iceland didn't deserve last place but not top 10 for me.

@@kaleproject3495 Laura Rizzotto hooked me with her story. Vocal just creeps up, her movements were a huge plus to her performance. No wonder her jury gave her 6th place. It is a charismatic, well-kept on the stage

Not much is going in Portugals entry, and thats why its so beautiful. And Hungary is meaningless? Come on...
Really liked Portugal for a while but it just gradually went lower in my list as other entries did more with staging etc. I thought Hungary could get a top five finish, too. Staging that got across the message of the song (which is really good by the way) or a verse in English would have helped.
I understand better now 😀 Staging just means a lot more to you, than it does to me. For me the most important is the song 😀
Poland in studio was good and in live not bad why was it that hated?
My guess is that it's just a bit of a safe, bland song. Oh and it's an EDM song being performed by a couple of older-looking guys who look like they are DJing a disco for 13 year olds. XD

@@esc.castelosca Going back to it, The Moldova song doesn't hold up well. The staging, considering the limitations in Lisbon, was kinda amazing tho.

I'm surprised how back in 2016 "experts" didn't appreciate Sergey Lazarev 's song , saying it was to silly and avarage pop. So in 2018 they gave it to worse pop chicken song and its stupid presentation ! (Israel i mean )Double standards.

So the results were pretty good but Estonia needed moved up a bit? That sounds fair. It was definitely one of the more underrated songs.
