- I have been selling 3D models online for well over 5 years. This video aims to help you as a content creator benefit from what I have learned. While selling 3D models online is at it's core quite a simple business endeavor, there is massive opportunity in it when approached in a way that is well defined, target's in sight, and backed up by some good old fashioned savvy.
We live in the time of digital content creators and any online business will do well to stop and educate itself into areas of growth.
Topics addressed in this video in an overview:
1. Don't get caught in too many upload loops
2. Days online - every day is a business or marketing opportunity
3. Don't eat away at your own finance / profit
4. Go where the people are
5. Create non-specific/non occasion content / 3d models
6. Be productive
7. Diversify
8. Follow an industry
9. Template your work as far as you can
10. Market your products
11. Change with the industry

As a huge BUYER of these models, I have to say you guys are leaving SO MUCH money on the table by not doing full conversion to other software packages. Typically I've got corporate expense MONEY to burn, but not the TIME to deal with texture conversion headaches stemming from FBX models exported from MAX--as is sadly the norm for all these sites. All the material settings are off , and some nodes don't translate at all. You could charge me 3X the price for a fully converted Maya scene file that actually looks like the preview pic when I load it up. But I don't have the time to beg for that, or trust it'll be done properly on the fly. I'm there to buy models in the first place to SAVE time. Pick the top software packages, and do full conversions to their native format so the rest of us non-Max users can buy with some level of confidence.
Thank you for your comment, really appreciate the input. I try and convert to what i have access to, but can only convert to the ones i legally have access to and i think the same goes for a lot of sellers. Your input is good i fully agree with you, just not sure the problem can be tackled in its entirety.
Come to think of it, i lost 4 hours in conversion (mainly material issues) on a model i bought yesterday so i completely understand the frustration.
Good points, but having multiple DCC programs would cost a lot of money, e.g. Blender, Maya, 3Dsmax, Fusion 360
@@point7 two of those are free and two are both owned by Autodesk.
You can confidently use free software like blender to export fbx which is max conpatible. I do that for my max clients, for my maya clients i give obj, never had a complaint
Thank you. Even 3 years later this is still very relevant and important to learn today.
thanks for the compliment!
Also looking into 3D modelling as a freelance business . This video is very clear and structured. Thanks from Cape Town!

A Russian guy is selling extra high quality military vehicles with full interior and some of them were selling for 5000$ each and i couldn't believe but he was selling them regularly. I don't remember the website address but this was a few years ago.
Thats wild. But i think i did see it and also noticed sales. Thanks for the comment!
@@HubertKnoblauch3DContentOnline The movie industry is probably where he get his profit since his models were not for game with some models averaging 1 millions faces but with UE5 these models would work with nanite by just rigging the whole vehicle to a bone. 10 years ago i also saw a website doing similar but with ww2 aircraft and one model was sold 25,000$ again with full interior of very high quality.
I'm looking to get serious about creating 3d content for passive income. I do it as a day job but I want to be able to make some money while I sleep and be able to travel the world more. Thank you for your tips
Great, if you do it for a day job like me you should have good experience + existing material libraries etc. Good luck, please keep me posted.

What do you thing about built my own wordpress/woocomerce online market and sell 3d models by myself ?
Thanks Sir :D :)
High hubert you are amazing artist your videos are great my question is how can find what is good for selling? how can find what is needed in the industry?even with ultra realistic modeling texturing rendering sometimes not sell at all
Hi! Thank you so much for the kind words, really appreciate it. There is no definite rule for what sells but there are some guidelines that does help. 1. Do not model furniture or architecture or interiot props, this is entirely saturated.
2. Larger packs /high ticket items will earn more for your efforts
3. You can check the popular keywords in blendermarket/popular sales
4. Opt in for CGT analytics and check the category size vs category liquidity
5. Solve problems, in other words, as opposed to just doing 3d, pair up with a python coder and publish a software addon (like the Citybuilder 3d as an example on blendermarket)
5. Nothing beats experience. The more you do, the more you learn.
6. Whatever you publish, publish it well, spend time on the keywords, the description, the images, the thumbnail and your products first impression. Selling it well really helps!
@@HubertKnoblauch3DContentOnline Thank you very much for answering my questions with very valuable information
Pleasure!
I upload to Turbosquid and CgTrader but turbosquid definitely has the lowest royalty rate. Does that mean we should pull all of our models off there? You mentioned eating your own profits but there must be some value in being on both sites as well. Some buyers will only check turbosquid.
I pulled mine off as a matter of principle but i would say keep yours on there, it sounds like it is working for you. I do realise some buyers only use turbosquid
@@HubertKnoblauch3DContentOnline Yeah turbosquids royalties are shameful. Another site needs to over take them. It like competing with walmart though.
How does one go about marketing their 3D models? I've heard behance is great for some products but what are some other ways we can get our work out there?
Hi i did see the question i will respond later today when i have the time to put down a quality answer
@@HubertKnoblauch3DContentOnline No worries, take your time. Could be a good opportunity to make another video about. Also thanks for uploading this video.
@@shivrammahendran Sincerest apologies, for not getting to your answer sooner, here it is:
There are typically 2 routes, feed based and search based. I recommend using a combination of the 2
Feed based - is good for creating general awareness
Instagram - good for general awareness more of you as an artist, less to do with the products. The negative is the VERY short post lifespan but if you post stories (daily) you will remain top of feed for your followers.
When you use insta - use it in combination with other "awareness drivers" because of the decline in organic reach it is currently undergoing
See link:
czcams.com/video/U39r1wLe9LU/video.html
Again, this is good for GENERAL AWARENESS and GREAT for building an audience. Once you have an audience, you can do wonders, i have made some CGTrader as well as Blender market purchases from people that I follow on Insta. I like their quality and know they create a certain type of content and so i have specifically looked for them on CGT and BM.
Search based - searching for a specific product. This is powerfull because here you get to hone in on specific target searches
Artstation with backlinks
Behance with backlinks
CZcams with description links
See link:
czcams.com/video/Aq48ETyBFxg/video.html
People searching for a specific product can find yours here, then link it back to CGT or another 3d site, where they can buy it - i recommend taking the opportunity to up-sell it here
When you have been at it for 6 months or so, please keep in mind that ANALYTICS is your friend. Check your stats (i see a lot of CGT sales with buyers coming from youtube for example).
Again, happy to help, sincerest apologies for taking so long. Please if you are still wondering about one or 2 things, Just ask and i will do my best to get back to you.
nice video. can you make video about the licence/cc in selling website 3d model?. thanks
Stl licenses are a scam created by the 3D printing community.....
I am making a 3D model of an art scene that i want to sell on line... Do i or should i copyright this image model.. If so, what would i need to do in order to copyright the model image... is it neccessary ?
Hi there, if it has artworks that you dont own, it should be sold only as editorial, for editorial use. You will see the editorial checkbox in cgtrader, blendermarket etc.
it is 100 % mine.. can it be easily stolen from me ? what should i do.@@HubertKnoblauch3DContentOnline

Hi there, happy vetting
hey mate, so i've been trying to figure this one out for a while and i cant get any clean answer to this.... can you tell me anything about the copyright topic ? because i cant get my head wrapped around that, for example apple, has no problem that someone is making money off an iphone 3d model without them profiting right ??? how do i save myself of 1000 lawsuits coming from all the designers if i model furniture or products ???
would be a huge help. thanks for the content !
HI, Good question. In short, there are a number of ways in which you can sell a product / 3d model online, the same for photos and videos
Royalty-Free or editorial (CGTrader)(Blender Market)(Turbosquid)
Standard use or extended use
First, the simple answer is this:
If it is entirely your own work, concept, idea, 3d, texture, everything - then sell it under royalty-free
If it is representative of a real-world object that is on the market - then it HAS TO BE sold as editorial. Editorial content may contain logos and brands and represent real-life products.
That being said, I would not model "sensitive industries" (read military or pharmaceutical) content even under editorial or at all even. While a photo could simply be licensed as editorial and published in an article, some companies seem to not view 3D the same. The primary red flag law for 3d artists modeling content contain logos or brands is called "passing off".
Passing Off means that a large company might view you - as passing their content, under your name. While I have never had issues around passing off, I was politely asked to take down a model under that particular clause.
Generally, speaking though,
Anything that exists in the real world - sell under editorial.
Anything else - sell under Royalty-free.
Licensing like standard and commercial has more to do with its end use limits and not the Copywrite side.
Let me know if you need more detail and I can respond with (hopefully) a formulated response from either Blender Market or CGT or both.
Regards and thank you for your time watching the video!
@@HubertKnoblauch3DContentOnline this is so nice of you ! Thanks so much. I do have some other questions if you wouldnt mind answering them ...
could you explain ''editorial'' a little more ? what does this mean for a (lets say phone) model if i sell it editorial ?
what does this mean for me, if i want to sell them on my own website ?
is it really true that if i model a 1:1 iphone (or whatever) product that the company could sue me ? also what would the consequenses be ? i mean are we talking about prison time or couple 100 bucks as fee ? im not expecting that you tell me excalty how much it would cost but just to give me some glimpse of an idea ;) (btw im hinting to websites like dimensiva.com) i really dont want to throw them under the bus because i absolutley love what they do, but i always wonderd how they to that....
thanks so much for taking time dude !! really appreciate it !
Cool, i might need to respond in video format, also, may need a bit of time to properly dig into the legal side

selling model at low cost ? is it good or should go for average pricing ?
Hi, the model should always be priced according to its quality, so to rephrase, "should I create models for low cost or slightly higher (medium) cost.
Since I started making more expensive, larger models, my monthly earnings are A Lot better, I cleared over 1000 USD between CGT, BM, SF, Artsation, ETSY, BLACBOX and shutterstock in June 2020, but would never have done that by selling 10 dollar models,
Hope this answers the question?
@@HubertKnoblauch3DContentOnline thank u i got it :)
Did someone think about the fact that there will be in 5-25 years soooo many models that there will be many (nealry) dupe models and the price will fall down a lot.
So I would not use this to much as a passive income.
I mean at least not as main income, even if it rocks by now.
Thank you for bringing this up. It does need to be spoken about. I believe that you are right in the sense that the 3D "stock" market will in 5 years be saturated (we saw it in the stock photography being (1) saturated and (2) affected by industry change - primarily away from still towards video. How this will translate into the 3D industry (i think) is:
1. Static assets (in other words assets like Nature scans, furniture, architectural elements) which does not change or changes very little over time will be entirely saturated and undervalued.
2. Dynamic assets - in other words assets like tech innovation and other fast paced industries will do well FOR THOSE WHO ARE FAST ENOUGH to get quality assets out quickly.
3. It will be harder to freelance, competition will grow with 3D apps like display land, Meshroom etc.
What this all means for the individual is contextual - for me - I do 3D Passive Income as a SIDE-HUSSLE, while i am a product designer (day Job). I will continue to sell content that i make however the sole purpose for their production is not sales, it is (1) exerience / learning (2) portfolio content (3) content re-purposing and most important (4) FUN!!!!!!
Thanks for the input - as with anything, it is important to consider both sides of the coin and make your own calculated, informed decision. appreciate the comment.

how much realistic 3d character (human, creature, mecha ) costs?
You can do a 20 minute dig in CGTrader and compare with Blender Market - should give you a good indication.
@@HubertKnoblauch3DContentOnline i mean like for how much freelance/remote 3d character artist actually sells his character if he's working for blur studio let's say ?
I could tell that you are South African by your access
Could a beginner in Blender start selling their models online
Sure, you could, however - i would first make sure you have the appropriate skill and quality level. if you start selling prematurely, you won't make descent cash and only discourage yourself. If you can confidently put together a 35 dollar quality pack, then go for it.
thanks for your video! how much can you earn money selling 3d model per month?thanks
There is no straight forward answer here, it depends on a number of variables, pricing strategy, competition analysis, model quality, upload frequency, market strategy as well as a couple of other factors.
