In this 3 part series, I’m going to share what I know with you to help try and change your life - and create sustainable and substantial passive income completely online using your digital art skills. Yes, You're going to learn how to make a ton of money online.
I’m not talking about making a bit of side money, I’m talking about changing your life for the better. Most artists have it pretty hard out there, so I hope this helps some people.
And if you already have a course or product that's struggling, this guide will help you identify its issues and how to correct them.
I’m not trying to pitch anything to you, I’m not trying to get you to sign up to a mailing list, I just genuinely want to help artists realize their true potential - and I think now is the perfect time to start setting yourself up for the future.

This is not really a guide for digital artists, it's more like a guide on how to be an entrepreneur. Still very useful information. Learning this kind of stuff actually helped me make around 20k more each year on top of my current job. I could take it even further if I wanted to. I know exactly how to do it, just takes more effort.

@@volker2714 Well if you don't have the entrepreneur mindset then you can't exactly start a business and make passive income selling art. Your only option is working as an employee at a studio or MAYBE freelance but even freelancing is a little entrepreneurial in its nature.
This is an excellent video in a number of ways!
It is great for digital artists especially because you don't need to deal with the added problems of trying to record the creation of physical art!
(I do both traditional art AND digital art).
And OF COURSE it's all about being an entrepeneur!
Even if you are freelancing part-time due to working a "regular" job, or if you just want to sell digital assets, or merch, or have A YT channel and sell things via the description window such as links to Amazon to tools or equipment you use, or other affiliate links, then yes, you are an entrepeneur! 😊
It boils down to; "Nothing is ever easy"!
Success is usually never overnight. It builds upon itself.
That means there are some skills, research, and persistance of vision required!
It can be a real grind (even if you love what you do!), because you may be creating your own "job", and you become that tough boss - on yourself! 😂
If you create a product (like a physical product you have to sell) or a digital product (like digital assests), or things like a course, that all requires up-front investment of your time.
BUT, when you can re-sell it over-and-over again, then that part of it is the passive income!
I'm currently selling my art printed on products that I have made for me at workshops and printers.
I pre-fund my purchse of those things by doing KS campaigns.
Now I am allowing some investors so I can make more products buyers are requesting, as I need to pay for samples, etc.
Then I can offer these things too, and not do a seperate campaign for each item, AND fill my online store with products.
But selling a physical product can be tough because of the admin work time required and fulfillment, which I have done all myself until recently.☹️
It takes away from my ART CREATION TIME, and creating new art is what it's all about!
So now I'm implementing a plan (after researching it a bit), to base my business only on my digital products.
I will still create traditional art when I want to, but I will be doing primarily digital design and art.
The beauty of it, is that you can have the best of both worlds (if you love traditional art) and create digital art that looks like traditional art, but is faster to make.
And there are other awesome digital based art forms like video!
I'm exploring digital video creation of things like soundscape/ambient relaxation videos. Using both nature footage and in another style using both 2D and 3D based art I create.
It's a wild ride and not for the faint of heart.
Being your own boss can be as easy or demanding on you as you choose.
It boils down to knowing what you want, creating goals for yourself, but being flexible and realizing it's NOT going to be easy.
I'm not at 10K per month, but I see that it is doable now.
Running a business is hard, but it helps to have a positive attitude and have persistance of vision.
Creating art is the easy part.
And if you want to NOT be working for anyone else, and become a full-time artist, you have to have a plan, do your research and commit to yourself and your vision.

It's just that the specific asset flip market like Turbosquid is over saturated. There are niches for things like Kitbash kits and anything personality driven. It's just that if I look up "tank" or "house" or "car" on Sketchfab or Turbosquid I get hundreds of hits because over time each random thing people look for will be saturated in the same way stock footage has become saturated if I look up "office worker smiling" or "graph of stocks going up".

I've been a musician, programmer, and now digital artist and one thing that stood true through all of them was that the path to making a sale is around %15-30 quality of product, %70-85 getting your product seen. Most consumers don't really have enough of an understanding of whatever they are trying to buy in order to critique the product based on it's price relative to other peoples similar products. If they do , they might not even bother to look for other options.
Ultimately the consumer is partially responsible for large corporations doing the bare minimum and making increasingly lower quality products. Ex: blizzard, ea, most popular online games.

Making a goal of earning $3.5k per month as a passive income for me is already a great achievement...so I wont have to hold onto a full-time job that I hate working.

Update: I published my first CZcams video. It only took me a week from buying equipments to production. Recalling why I made this decision, I think mostly because of your video.

Great video! Passive income is great, I put my first 3d model for sale almost 10 years ago and it still generates income to this day , slowly as you build a portfolio of products, models or courses it will grow and become more substantial.
As someone who's dealt with existential panic surrounding how long I spent in education and the pay an artist receives, especially at entry levels, this video and the series from it is definitely something I'll be keeping a close eye on. I had a lot of worries that my 8 years of education in Game Art was time wasted - now I think it was an opportunity to be able to look into diversifying in ways that you've shown in the video and will keep sharing.

I ended up getting interested in substance painter after watching your videos, I was already starting to build items for a game I play, but wanted to learn how to paint them.
So I watched some of your videos and eventually took some free tutorials [literally too broke for the course, lmao] and eventually started taking commissions.
I launched my store, I have two products in it right now and I've made a substantial amount of money in just these past three weeks. I've been making ongoing money for the past few months.
So, thank you. It was really nice coming back to this at a better time in my life.
@Stylized Station I too work a full-time job in retail & do 37.5 hours a week(2:24) & have little to no time to work on my stuff. So for the whole of last year, I've been saving up as much money as possible. Which will enable me to work on this full-time with my 20k plus savings to cover me for a year. I'll be leaving my retail job in February this year. :)
This video is really a huge reminder of our worth & that we deserve more than what we give ourselves credit for.

Im not sure I would call all the time to build an audience, create a product, and then consistently promote and advertise the product to be exactly "passive."
I think the idea is you front load more of the work, invest early, then as time goes in you don’t have to spend as much time doing it. But yeah it’s still a lot of work.

passive income isn't just free money :) you have to put the work in in the beginning
yeah, i think what is more true to "passive" income is things like, idk redbubble, government bonds, etc.. this is more of an... active income i would say
@@maiamiller3648 But if you have to actively continue putting in the same effort to continue making that money, I wouldn’t call it “passive.” Working what amounts to a entrepreneurial part-time job isn’t considered a “passive” income. Managing your websites, social media, marketing, etc. 24/7 is arguably even more work than a casual part time job.
I have a hard time believing this is even possible, unless you get lucky and start a snowball effect.
Even then, I feel like I would be at the mercy of the first career-breaking mistake.
It's more possible in the nsfw field than in the sfw field.
Anyway, those who make 10k+ a month are definitely in the vast minority. And many of them get 10k a month as a team, not as an individual. Furthermore, those who get there got there after years of hand work.

@@GerardMenvussa if you put your audience first and not your will to make money you will succeed. CZcams will take 10 months to figure out who your audience are. Be consistent, be productive and be of excellent quality. Forget what goal others set, decide how much you need to be free, double that (taxes) and give it minimal 1 year to gain momentum.
very concise advice, looking forward to the next part. It's going to be a struggle finding out what it is that I can offer. I know my skillset, but formulating how to put it to use In a way that I can say 'I can use this' is hard. I think i must jump to the market research portion to see if I find a guiding star.
One thing is, i KNOW i can do it. Almost a year ago I made a small app when brushing up on my skills. It was something i churned out in 30 mins to an hour and gave it up in gumroad for free with a 'pay what you want'. The app netted me like $70, which amazed me and felt me with a pride and drive that I can do something bigger. again the question is what.

I FREAKING LOVE YOU FOR THIS. I started 3D Modeling on my iPad and making concept work by importing it into procreate...I've become really proficient at it to say. Was debating on figuring out a way to teach this to the masses because I know for a fact alot of artists like myself cant either afford a computer or just dont have one in general so would resort to using either Procreate to make art and other means on IOS. I love you man!

Being open about your salary and how much money you make is really important. I hate this hush hush culture that big companies have perpetuated. It only exists so they can pay you less.

I’ve been working in games for almost 10 years and almost ready to wrap up my next character and recorded every step, will be turning it into a full tutorial to see how it does. This will be my first pro tutorial and will need to do a lot of editing and voice narration.
Been selling 3d models for many years and I find digital marketplaces a waste, I never recover the money I put into my models.

Step 1- Don't expect a 20 min video will teach you how
There is no secret formula. You can watch videos like mine all day, but unless you start actually doing the work and making mistakes, you aren't going to achieve anything

It's really hard to get into the right mindset because, where I live, if you earn 800 euros per month you're well-paid. Earning thousands per month from art products sounds pretty much impossible.
I have a question: so your definition of the artist-job is somewhat one of a designer or teacher who has a certain skill set to show?
What approach would you recommend for non tech-savvy painters who make amazing artwork and are professionals in their areas? Selling the artwork on Patreon or Displate? Not quite sure how to use this guide for these kind of artists.
I agree when you say that the best people to learn from are those who are just ahead of you instead of decades long veterans, i find that they tend to have recently learnt whatever it is and everything is fresh in their minds, and they don't cut corners, when someone who has recently mastered a subject teaches it's fresh and all the information is there, when a master of twenty years teaches they tend to misjudge your level of ability and tend to miss things that are obvious and common practice to them, and can be confusing.

The paradox of subscriptions is that you don't want to subscribe to people who upload on regular basis (which sadly hurts those people) - you don't need their flood of content clog up your sub video overview list. You sub to channels that have irregular upload schedule or a very long one (one video every couple of months) so you don't forget about them in the mean time. Take Tim Pool as an example - why subscribe to a guy that pumps out 10 videos a day? Other content creators will drown in that flood of content, now imagine to subscribing to several people like that. And if you turn on notifications for more than few creators you won't keep up with videos, comments, anything really - not to mention that shit works randomly to begin with -_-

I'll be honest, a lot of this isn't going to genuinely help you make it as an artist. This advice is not specific to art and the parts that are, are mainly about things you shouldn't do as artist as opposed to anything you should specifically be doing as an artist. The art market IS saturated and most artists that made it have either been working hard for chicken change all the way through their teens and 20's, are employed outside of the things they post or services they offer on social media, or they have worked on something that happened to be popular to some degree (also you could just be an nsfw artist because those guys DO make money). You're better off doing art because you enjoy it, support your chance to become an artist full time with a job and keep posting and sharing your art online. There's nothing by ways of teaching in art you can come out with at this stage in the game if you're not an industry expert or accomplished to some level.
There are a lot of content creators in this field (online tutorial courses) who, unfortunately in this case you might say, produce almost anything you need for free. I have learned a lot of what I know (professional 3D modeling) from free tutorials, I have never paid for an online course in my life. Which doesn't mean that other haven't or wouldn't either obviously, but I'm really not sure I personally want to charge others for something they might find elsewhere for free. But thats just me, I am not a talented enough businessman to try and 'analyze the market' and things like that.
Once I bought a course thinking that it would go more in depth than the youtube videos I've already watched, boy was I wrong. That happened to me twice, and then I stopped buying courses.
Courses are best for complete beginners as it saves them the trouble and time of looking around for good free tutorials. That is, unless the course was complete shit... which the beginner wouldn't know unless he looked around for good free tutorials...
How about making and sharing lists of free tutorials in various fields and instead of charging a price, allow donations as an option?
I think selling courses is a pretty terrible move for a all the reasons you listed. It also diminishes your exposure because more people will look at free tutorials than paid ones. The better route is to offer free tutorials with packages, patreon, or donations. Once you have a larger audience it's easier to say "pay x dollars to get all the assets used in this tutorial if you want to follow along or use them in your own products".

How do you mean that? I know i live in the first world and win on default. I can alway just work in a super marked for 14,23 $ per hour. Life is easy if your not drug addicted and don´t have expensive hobbys or habits.
Schools need to start teaching these concepts better.
the "not having to be an extraordinary expert" helped me the most here.
I like the part about you wont hit 10k by shooting for extra beer money, but if you shoot for 50k you will think bigger, and may actually hit 10k (heck ill b3 happy with 1k a month!) I think that mindset of shooting high( but not ridiculous) is a good idea.

@@StylizedStation Yeah, the mindset sure is difficult, im a 3D artist and 3D printer props for cosplay, sometimes its hard to be like i see friends making money with it, but i have like 0 sales and 1 Subscriber on this youtube. I really want to figure out how to just get out of this nothing happening to making it out of this hole.
Can we appreciate that this dude genuinely cares enough about others trying to make it in this industry that he is willing to actually enable his potential competition. One of those repetitive 'happiness' sellers. Such people earn money just based on not the thing they're talking about (making a product to sell), but a dream to achieve making this product and life after it. This has nothing different with entrepreneurship of any other kind, and it's well-known for being highly unrewarding. It can be compared with seeds, thrown on a piece of land: you never know which one will grow into a tree, but for sure there will be a tree eventually, pity for those seeds left in the ground. It's important to emphasize that I'm far from judging this business, I'm more amazed by how massive is a scale it can be putten to. Neither I diminish the amount of efforts invested into this. Maybe the product called a 'dream of making a product' is a real deal, it's just based on people's ignorance of how the market and society works, and in fact, is misleading from real values of life.
Simple step to sell more digital assets for games: reduce your polycount. 9 times out of 10 I cannot buy your art because it uses 10 times more polygons than my budget for this specific asset.

Im always so worried about being self employeed, because what If I cant pay the rent one month, but can the other and then cant again? The stability and security is what worries me the most
Sacrificing security is the hardest part of becoming self-sustainable. But then again, your job can fire you whenever they feel like it.
@@StylizedStation It's not that simple, they can fire someone for a specific reason, but never just because they want to, they need the reason so they can let you go, there is laws so you just get fire because they want to.

Artists selling to other artists... I was hoping this would be more about cultivating an audience and thus an income based on people who genuinely like what you’re making and want to support you. Oh well.
