Thanks for the information
I want a video of Colin's secret polish!!
Thank you 🙏
How do you know which grip range to use for your pop-rivet?
Airstream uses two types of pop rivets on the interior. The most common grip range is 0.250 to 0.312 inches. This is the one included in our Rivet Replacement Kit: www.airgear.store/products/rivet-replacement-kit. The less-common rivet has a grip range of 0.376-0.500. Most people will never need that rivet.
Have a 2012 flying cloud with roof damage - roof crossmembers damaged behind the a/c unit. Where would I source materials to change roof crossmembers, roof skins and upper left side body panel. Should I use sealer between panels on the outside between panels and what size and make of rivets should I use. Have you ever tried to straighten roof crossmembers. Thank you and any information would be greatly appreciated
Angela, you'd be best off talking to an experienced Airstream restoration specialist. The extensive body work you're talking about it requires expertise and specialized tools. I would not recommend a DIY attempt on such a repair.
Wish you would have made a close up of behind the pop rivet !!! plus You have to drill out the old rivet first, plus put tape for protection first. Can I use an Olympic rivet elsewhere? they seem to hold better. underbelly for example,, Thank You for this video and the other update :-0)
You don't always have to drill out the old rivet. Often it just falls inside the wall, or you can poke it through with a small screwdriver or ice pick.
You could use an Olympic rivet but it won't match the others in your trailer.
@@airgear Thank You 😊.
There is a "Globetrotter placard" on the outside of the trailer that is damaged. Its two rivets are still in place. We want to remove this placard and install a new one. Is there a proper method to remove these rivets, and then put new rivets in their place (using the tool and method shown in the video)? Thanks!
Yes, check out our other video entitled "Replacing a pop rivet inside your Airstream". The procedure is exactly the same, except that you would first drill out the old rivets.
Wonderful. Thank you!
Can we got an episode of Colin explaining Black Tanks? Hee hee..
Thank you. Question: I had an inside rivet replaced and the tech first drilled the existing hole first. This is not required before riveting? Thanks!
No, drilling out the hole is not required before riveting. But the tech might drill into the hole for two reasons that I can think of:
1. Part of the old rivet was still stuck in the hole, and needed to be cleaned out.
2. The new rivet was slightly larger -for example 3/16" versus 1/8" diameter-but normally there's no reason to increase the rivet size for an interior rivet.
This would be helpful if the terminology, mandrel, and others were explained and shown for a bit longer and if we could actually see the riviets in the aluminum piece. The reflection defeats the purpose unless you are someone who already knows and wouldn’t need this vid.
We've added a second video which shows a bit more detail. See it here: czcams.com/video/SkVxmfKeUJ4/video.html
A constructive comment: the video wasn’t close enough to show how to actually do this. You need more close ups.
Thanks, Doug. This was not meant to be an instructional video. We do have another video called "How to replace a pop rivet" video which has closeups and details. Happy travels!
