    I own a 2014 Bambi 20 and the A/C condensate drains on the roof to the rear or front or sometimes out the drain in the tire well where my previous 3 Airstreams drained. I removed the inside cover/ air direction diverted and noticed three drain hoses teed together and water started to leak on the floor. I turned the A/C off and water poured out for a short time. Everything runs on solar during high solar exposure hours. Batteries only are needed for the times when the solar panels aren't providing enough electricity to run live loads.

    • @airgear
      @airgear Před 2 dny

      To clarify, nothing "runs on solar" *directly*. The solar panels charge and maintain the batteries. All electrical appliances are connected directly to *battery* power. If there's enough sun, the solar panels can maintain the batteries but the appliances (what you're calling "live loads") are still connected to the batteries only.

    Rich, any thoughts on ceramic coatings, and should it help with corrosion prevention?

    • @airgear
      @airgear Před měsícem

      Filiform corrosion on the aluminum is enabled by tiny gaps in the clear coat (often caused by tiny nicks from stones or other abrasion) which allows moisture to get to the aluminum beneath. An aftermarket Ceramic coating won't stop that process unless it can *completely* defend against stones and scratches.

    Not satisfied with the battery switch explanation. On my 2024 the jack still works with the switch off. And if the switch does cut off everything, why are new trailers coming with physical battery disconnects, and why do people continue to install them with battery upgrades?

    • @airgear
      @airgear Před měsícem

      The power hitch jack is directly wired to the battery on all model years, so it does not switch off with the Battery Disconnect. However, it has zero standby power requirement so it does not impact the batteries during storage. The Battery Disconnect Switch does not cut off everything. For more on that subject see our guide: www.airgear.store/blogs/solar-electrical-and-batteries/why-are-my-batteries-dead

    Brad, the rain barrel collection is a good analogy but, other things fill the barrel too. Understanding solar is different than understanding how the DC system works on a factory new Airstream. I’d like to see a block diagram showing how all the things (converter , tow vehicle etc.) feed the rain barrel. How does the rain barrel tell the solar it’s full? Thanks for your videos, I’d like to see a more in depth video on the whole DC system. Thank you!

    If I purchase this with the zamp plug for my 2020 airstream, does the kit also include an adapter (7 way plug I think you call it) to allow me to use the same panels to charge an Anker C1000 power station?

      We do offer a 7-way adapter as an add-on to the Portable Solar Kit, but you would only need one if you do not have a solar port, which your 2020 Airstream already has. We designed this kit to charge Airstream batteries and don't recommend it be used to charge a portable power station.

    I'm an Airstream owner and really like the idea behind this from a safety standpoint, but man it looks like a tight fit inside the Airstream gas bottle cover! I checked out the website and see that most people had to rotate their bottles sideways (and this looks possibly unsafe) in order to accommodate the longer stems and connector length. But most of those photos were with the rubber hose connectors. The ones in Brad's setup looks a little cleaner. Are the new braided hose connectors also shorter?

    • @airgear
      @airgear Před 4 měsíci

      You are right that it is a tight fit under the propane cover. If you reuse regular propane hoses you can't get the cover to fit properly over the tanks. That's why we developed our Airstream Installation Kit. It includes 90-degree propane hoses, fittings, and instructions for installing GasStop in an Airstream. If you don't get the kit you'll still need to find the 90-degree hoses and fitting someplace. In answer to your question, the braided stainless hoses are not shorter; it's the 90-degree angle that makes it work under the cover. See more about the installation kit I mention here: www.airgear.store/products/gasstop-emergency-shut-off

    Oops, forgot to mention - we only have 2 AGM batteries. Can I benefit from more solar? Would I only use it boondocking or would it add (or interfere) with shore power-or do not use with shore power🤔

    • @airgear
      @airgear Před 4 měsíci

      Scott- we'll answer both of your questions in this comment. 1) if you use the 7-way adapter to connect a portable solar system, it will complement your rooftop installation - but it will do so independently, through the portable system's charge controller. So, you'll have two sets of solar panels charging the batteries, but the systems operate independently. 2) Can you benefit from more solar if you have 2 AGM batteries? It depends. How much solar capacity do you have on the roof? Where do you typically camp? How much power do you use? Example: if you boondock primarily in the Pacific Northwest, you'll likely benefit from having a supplement of portable panels. But if you travel mostly to places with a lot of sun, your rooftop installation might be just fine. Also, if you find yourself often running out of battery when camping with your rooftop installation, you'll most likely benefit from adding portable solar, since the rooftop installation is not generating enough power. Also, and honest evaluation of how much power you use when boondocking will help you - are you using the inverter a lot? Running the furnace because you like to cold weather camping? Hope this gives you food for thought. Happy camping!

      Forgot your last question. You only need to use portable solar to charge the batteries, when you're camping someplace unplugged. You don't use it when connected to shore power.

    I have a solar panel on my 2001 Classic, with a control panel in the right. No zamp. If I use the 7way plug adapter, how will that interface with the onboard solar? Thanks

    • @airgear
      @airgear Před 3 měsíci

      Apologies for the delayed reply. Our portable solar kit does not interface with the on board solar system, and has its own charge controller. The advantage is that you add inexpensive capacity without worrying about compatibility with whichever system you already have. Hope this helps.

    For your silicone spray, are you recommending normal 'wet' silicone spray or the dry spray variety?

      Either is fine

    So, I purchased one of those coil water houses from Air Gear, so does that mean i need another short length water hose from the rv to the water hose? I am guessing with such an expensive filter you want to have it as close to the rv as possible to avoid theft?

    • @airgear
      @airgear Před 5 měsíci

      Yes, the filtration system requires 2 hoses - one from spigot to filters and the other from filters to RV. We've not had any issues with theft when traveling with this system, but I imagine you could lock it up if that is a concern.

    Should you loosen before torque when doing it as a safety check? If you torque every season eventually wouldn’t it get too tight stretching threads?

    • @airgear
      @airgear Před 5 měsíci

      Thanks for your questions. I'm sure you asked the first question because you've seen people on Internet forums and FB claiming that you need to loosen a lug nut before checking the torque. They claim that this is necessary for highest accuracy. Those folks are trying to argue a very fine point that doesn't have much validity in the real world. Unless your torque wrench is very expensive and recently calibrated, you are only going to get within about 10% of the setting you're aiming for anyway -- and that's good enough. It doesn't have to be absolutely perfect. Moreover, loosening the nut before checking the torque can actually cause a problem. This is because the lug nuts on many travel trailer wheels (especially the aluminum wheels used on many Airstreams) need some time to "seat" after they've been loosened. Any time that you loosen the nuts or remove them entirely, you should check the torque at least *3 times*, at 25 miles, 50 miles, and about 75-100 miles, to make sure they've seated properly. So this idea of loosening the nuts before checking the torque is just making more work (and paradoxically, *increasing* the risk of a loose nut if you don't do the 3 required checks). The only time you need to loosen the nut is if you suspect it has been overtightened previously. As to your second question: No, checking the torque does not gradually overtighten the lug nuts. If the nut is already at or above the required torque, the wrench will simply "click"when you check it, without tightening the nut further.

    Hi Rich, I know front end separation can be an issue for some airstreams. Do you know if the 23' coaches suffer this problem? Thx in advance.

    • @airgear
      @airgear Před 5 měsíci

      Front end separation can *theoretically* happen on any trailer, but from what we've seen, it is primarily a problem for longer trailers (especially 30-34 footers). It's also a problem when older trailers have structural issues such as wood floor rot, severe frame rust, or collision damage.

    On our 2017 flying cloud 30 we had only warm water and the problem was the mixing valve was clogged with minerals. We unscrewed it from the aluminum tank and let it (and the little filter behind it) soak in vinegar. Water is hot again.

    • @airgear
      @airgear Před 5 měsíci

      This is a common problem in many parts of the plumbing system, when you've been using hard water. Especially if you have a tankless water heater, we recommend following a descaling (or decalcifying) procedure annually. The steps are described in "The (Nearly) Complete Guide to Airstream Maintenance" second edition, which you can find on Amazon.

    Most Teslas are made with Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries. Lithium Ion and phosphate batteries are 3x less likely, according to hard data, to catch fire compared to let’s say, your gas tank and internal combustion engine vehicles.

    • @airgear
      @airgear Před 5 měsíci

      I think this needs some clarification. *Some* Teslas have Lithium Iron (not "Ion") Phosphate batteries, also known as LiFePO4 batteries or "LFP" batteries. They are indeed less likely to burn, which is one of the reasons why they are used in RVs. However, many Teslas (including ones we've owned) have Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminum (NCA) batteries, or Lithium Manganese Cobalt Oxide (NMC) batteries which will burn dramatically. If you've seen a video of an electric car, scooter, or e-bike burning, one of these chemistries was probably used in the batteries. Because most people refer to all of the various chemistries as "lithium batteries" it's easy to mix them up. People get frightened by LiFePO4 Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries for this reason, even though they are generally accepted as safe for use in RV applications.

      We'd suggest contacting a restoration professional to have the Airstream evaluated. They may also know how to help you understand how the old appliances and equipment work.

    Absolutely spot on, and very articulate. I met Rich several years ago at an Alumapalooza (Rich - I’m the guy who bought a digital copy of your book and asked you to sign my iPhone screen). If you don’t own his book, buy one. If you need accessories, look at his store first. He knows what he’s talking about.
