      I don't think the long matches are too much of a problem if you get a day's rest. But once again because the French Open are the worst, no roof to finish the SF matches the same day and handing over the trophy without a ball being struck to the first SF winner. Not that it was likely Djokovic or Thiem would have beaten Nadal anyway, but playing 3 days in a row doesn't help.

      The RG 2012 final displayed a superior level than the RG 2021 semifinal, in my view. Both Nadal and Djokovic were younger, in their prime, and fiercely disputed the four sets. In the RG 2021 semifinal Nadal's foot injury pain increased in the last set, and therefore his physical shape was questionable, making it a boring, one-sided last set. In fact, only the third set of the RG 2021 semifinal was close and epic in a true sense of the word. Unfortuantely, Nadal had to skip the rest of the 2021 season due to the aforementioned foot injury.

      Well, people seem to 'blink' a lot against Djokovic when they are on the verge of winning. Happened to Nadal (breakpoints deep in the fifth set at Wimbledon 2018, and break up in the fifth set in AO 2012), happened to Federer a few times (obviously), and yeah, Dominic should be proud to join that illustrious list.

    • @ryanknowles
      @ryanknowles Před 4 lety +31

      ashb001 lol I wouldn’t say Rafa blinked at Wimbledon, that was a 50/50 match that could’ve gone either way. I believe Rafa saved some break points early in the 5th so he could’ve been out before 7-7 had Novak converted. Australia 2012 also hard to say a blink match as Novak was in control of that one before Rafa somehow wrestled away the 4th set and carried that momentum to a tenuous one break lead in the fifth. Should he have won it? Probably. But not comparable to Thiem’s choke job IMO. As for Federer squandering match points at Wimbledon ‘19, I’m gonna leave that for the Fed fans to dissect. It was a strange “meltdown” to say the least!

      @@ryanknowles I disagree with you on both examples - Rafa has now *TWICE* lost when *leading* in the fifth set - and regardless of how well he fought in those matches, he should have put them away: AO 2012 to Djokovic and AO 2017 (to Federer). In addition, he actually came very close to losing the USO 2019 after being *up* two sets to love against Medvedev, who was one or two shots away from taking the match. Djokovic seldom loses from a lead, especially as the match goes on.

In contrast, Djokovic's play at key points is on a whole different dimension. You wanna guess Novak's SECOND serve speed on the *first* point of the nerve wracking final set tiebreak of Wimbledon 2019? 105 mph. Yes, thats the difference. Its those 1-2 seconds of resolve and grit that define true greatness. See that second serve here: czcams.com/video/TUikJi0Qhhw/video.html

    Out of all the finals that Dominic has been in, I think the Madrid 2018 final was the one final I really wish he'd won. He was playing Zverev and had such a smooth ride to the final I thought there was no way he'd lose. But it slipped. All the other major finals are a tough task, not that I'm not proud of him its just he is always coming in as the underdog and his victories are always that much better considering. But Madrid was truly more devastating in my eyes. This match though I had a feeling there was no way he could lose it.
