And he missed an opportunity to close out the match against Murray in 2016. Who knows he may have won against Novak again in 2016
This was the match that pretty much left both players at their most damaged and misery physically wise... it showes the inmense stress and hardship that goes at the top competiton of a world class sport.
I couldn't even begin to imagine the agony playing 4 1/2 hrs of middle of the day clay court tennis, not even in my most fit years.
@@notsohandytim5090 And its not only the finess area, mentally with all the stress and high pressure, and then of course, the prospect of playing... NADAL ON CLAY after that. Anyways, the check and prestige surelly helped the cause ;)
@GTS Precisely, the acumulation of this high demanding matches, specially when you are close or in your 30´S takes a toll and at some point the body just says BASTA! So surely it was something that had been lingering in his body and it just snapped at that point and with this beast of a match.
Stan had little left to battle Nadal in the final. Murray said this match is where he started breaking down. Leading to surgery. Both players have not been the same since this match.
The doping will help.
God, I miss Wawrinka. Amazing player.
I'm kind of hating this era of tennis knowing the count down has begun to the end of the greatest players of all time. How lucky we are to have witnessed it.

This RG ended a 4 year periord of greatness from Wawrinka,....SF US Open 2013, Champion AUS 2014, Champion Montecarlo 2014, QF Wimbledon 2014, QF US open 2014, SF WTF 2014, Champion Davis Cup 2014, SF Ausopen 2015, Champion RG 2015, QF Wimbledon 2015, SF USOpen 2015, SF RG 2016, Champion US Open 2016, SF WTF 2016, SF Aus 2017, RU RG 2017.
And Murray’s greatness from 2011-2016 9 slam finals in those years 16 semis not fucking bad
Glad to see him healthy again and making the QF at AUS this year. Shame that clay court season is cancelled, I was looking forward to seeing if Stan was truly back.

Wawrinka won the second set and the fourth set with a forehand return down the line. The backhand that gave him the win also landed in the same zone as the two forehands. Cool.
This match was played incredibly by both players amazing match I'm glad they put it up in 23 minutes didn't expect this from Roland Garros
Stan not just for one handed backhands but backhands period, I think he has one of the best if not the best backhand period.

os dois melhores tenistas da geração, sem considerar os 3 fenômenos que não se comparam. Entre o período de Roland Garros 2005 até Roland Garros de 2020 foram 61 Grand Slams disputados com 20 conquistas de Nadal, 16 de Federer, 15 do Djokovic, 3 do Murray e 3 do Wanrinka, somente Del Potro no US Open 2009 e Cilic no US Open 2014 foram os "intrusos". Ainda teve 4 conquistas do Federer antes de 2005, e continuou e continua tendo de Nadal e Djokovic após 2020, isso é impressionante !

Its obvious Murray got badly injured during the match. But showed usual great character to try to compete to the very end. Pity as we may never see Murray at his best again.
Murray was never good enough in the best of 5 sets matches or such tournaments. Even an older Wawrinka did better than the overrated Brit.

Masterful lobbing in that 1st set from Murray, the skill he had was truly elite.
Murray was outgunned against Stan on the dirt, so he had to delve into his deep repertoire of skills to diffuse Stan in large parts of this match but unfortunately this is the match that broke them both as elite tennis players.
Both were never the same again after this.
Perhaps, but both players seem to be doing just fine 6 years later.

I love the way both players played the game. Stan The Man really played unbelievable tennis...
Sadly after this match both players went on downward spiral from injuries. Both trying to hang on today. Respect them both. Murray a much more consistent player then stan , but Stan when on could beat anybody., and had such offensive firepower.
Murray, when at his peak, was just as lethal. The Scott beat prime Nadal and Djokovic twice at slams. Stan never could beat a healthy Nadal in a slam.
who would have thought this match was the start of their downfall as a tennis players. so sad.

The fact that Andy had hip surgery shortly after this match, suggests he was playing in an injured state- (which helps explain his inability to run down a lot of Stan's shots).
Sadly Wawrinka had nothing left for the final.

I think the forehand winner from Stan at 13:34 was actually one of the more important shots of his career. And in some way Murray's. Never know, but I feel if Stan had missed it just by an inch more wide the match could have had Andy's name on it. Really picked Stan back up. Crazy match, in some ways marking the end of the winning ways of both guys at the Big events.

The last 64 Slams going back to French Open 2005 have had only 8 winners. Big 3, Murray, Stan, Delpo, Cilic, and Thiem. Unbelievable! And even more unbelievable is that years 2012 and 2014 had 4 different winners!

Hi, RG. FYI: even when I re-watch a movie for an umpteenth time, I don't want a summary of every scene BEFORE the scent starts. Kind of kills the buzz.
p.s. obviously murray had the better career of these 2. but murray's 3 majors were a reward for his steadiness. he played at very high level long enough for the stars to align 3 times. total Big 3 wins in his 3 majors: 2, both times against a tired Novak.
Stan's Big 3 wins in his 3 majors: 5, including what might be the 2nd most impressive task in all of tennis, beating prime Novak at the '14 AO.
both earned/deserved their majors: murray as a "career achievement" reward for all those beatings he suffered at the hands of the Big 3, and Stan for "best performance" 3 times on the biggest stage.
Ironically this is probably the last time both of these 2 players were fully healthy.
Amazing how Stan The Man came behind to win the match. The first to strike does not always gets to the finish line first.
