      It was definitely not the best all-time match, but it was still a great match and one of the most significant. Nadal was going into that match with a 105-2 record and had only lost once when he was in good form up to that point(2009 to Soderling). In 2015, Nadal was a shadow of himself, so I don't put much weight on that loss. Most people, myself included, saw Nadal getting #21 a foregone conclusion; especially after what we saw in RG 20 final. To add to that, Djokovic was 1-7 vs Nadal at the French and the head to head was about even. Coming back vs the King of Clay in his house after starting the match down 0-5 was a very great effort. The third set was one of the best sets, featuring multiple breaks, both fighting off break points and set points, capped by a tiebreaker. This match, along with Wimby 19, may be looked at for a long time as being the deciding factors as to who will end the best of the open era; especially when you consider that the French is the only slam which Nadal has the advantage in vs Novak at the moment. Seeing the king of clay crumble in that final set was one of the greatest things to happen in tennis. It finally gave the Spaniard an understanding as to how Federer felt when he lost in his haven in that 2008 Wimbledon final.

One could just as well say hard courts are tougher because they're less forgiving of errors in shot selection or strategical ball placement. I am pretty sure there was a point early in third set where umpire called a clear out ball in and the made Djokovic upset for a while, hence the result of third set 6-1. Should have put that at highlights.
    Also I remember Djokovic actually saved the BP after falling to the net, but he got broken at next or second break point after that incident. Highlights give the impression like he was broken immediately. I am not sure about this though as I always thought Djokovic had game point at that point but I see it was actually deuce now.

      Rafa was defensive and a moonballer during the first part of his career. He eventually learned to play more aggressively and won Wimbledon(albeit mono Fed) and some hardcourt slams. But even after, he would put on moonballer and defensive performancesevery now and then. It was only after the hiring of Moya that he finally shed himself from the moonball label.

    • @SJ-di5zu
      @SJ-di5zu Před 3 lety +4

      @@jacobschmidt2709 Don’t talk like you know anything about Nadal matches bro. You just go around hating on him. He was never a “moonballer”, he hits much harder on average than Djokovic and Federer. And defensive players don’t do well in pro tennis. That’s just a fact. Nadal is one of the greatest players of all time if not the greatest, you can’t accomplish this without being able to create offense. Also Federer didn’t have mono during 2008 Wimbledon; he said he had gotten over it by Indian Wells, a good 5 months before Wimbledon. The Australian Open was the only tournament it affected him in, and during the sunshine double he was rusty. That’s it. Give Nadal his credit; you can’t just get lucky and “moonball” your way to 20 grand slams. I’d argue he’s more offensively gifted than Djokovic to be honest. Did you watch the French Open final last year? Djokovic tried to hit through Nadal and hit 52 unforced errors; Nadal hit through Djokovic with ease.

      This characterization remains and is applicable to first years of Nadal, at this stage he had closed the distance and worked rrally hard to put more tennis in his game which before was very reliant on athletisicm.
      The characterization was very true about prior years and mostly in comparison to the tennistically great Federer. So in their finals of years bwfore it applied.
      Nadal whi is very hard worker put more tebnis to his game and so dtarted to be more successful gradually on other surfaces as well.

      Wstch live and you will see the characterisations, amd tge evolution of the game. I really beluve these characterisations that were very spread out git ti Nadal and he pushed even more to put more tennis to his game and be by 2010-2011 with great tennis game.

Both of those semis were the real finals. This match was like the Rome 2006 Fedal match and Miami 2011 Djokovic- Nadal match. All were rivalry changing matches. As someone once said:
    AO 2012 Final= A New Hope
    FO 2013 Semis= The Empire Strikes Back
    WIMBLEDON 2018 Semis= Return of the Jedi
