Always makes me smile when people think buying a 4 x 4 is all you need to do. I trained with David Bowyer about 30 years ago and the mantra was ‘as slow as possible, as fast as necessary’! I’ve never been stuck since!

Am I the only one that finds 4x4 fails oddly satisfying, especially if they’ve just ploughed through at speed like they’re immune to hydro-locking?
When you use a snorkel on your 4x4 it takes air upp by the roof of the car. So you ned too drown the snorkel to hydrolock it. Its fun as hell to go 4x4 offroad
Diesel engines are more susceptible to hydrolock than gasoline engines. Due to their higher compression ratios, diesel engines have a much smaller final combustion chamber volume, requiring much less liquid to hydrolock. Diesel engines also tend to have higher torque, rotating inertia, and stronger starter motors than gasoline engines. The result is that a diesel engine is more likely to suffer catastrophic damage.

Me and my Dad fitted an ex RAF Lightweight with a fantastic Rover V8. Our 'snorkel' was an excellent drainpipe system with an old Tupperware box on top stuffed with filter material. Worked like a charm!!

How come the Land Rover at 2:20 with the snorkel failed? It appears it got water in the engine, based on the steam in the exhaust.
I think the water just blocked the exhaust it will be fine once it blows it all out
its a petrol - so water on the plugs can stop it until the heat dries them ,,
It's my landy no water got into the engine it has a old style distributor that I'd not waterproofed so lost it's spark that why it's running on about 3 lol I've sealed it now so won't do it

What sort of damage does the water cause?
If they are lucky, the engine will stall and it can be recovered/fixed. If they go ahead and keep trying to start it and there is water in the cylinders then it can ruin the engine when the pistons try to compress the water and it will (at the least) bend/break the rods that push/pull the piston, pretty much that and other water damage such as inside the car and electrical.
I cannot understand what is going through the minds of these many thousands of people who continue to destroy their own cars going through this water! It's absolutely shocking and rrrrredikilis

I don't understand why they come in so fast, Passing slowly, many vehicles could pass without a problem. You have to prevent water from entering through the air filter.
I have a diesel land cruiser, I love the splash, and I will go through any deep puddle quickly.

Hate to tell everyone, You could have an air intake 30 feet high, you will still destroy your vehicle.. You would destroy it if you turned the engine off and pushed it through. Think of this... The rest of your vehicle; hubs, gearbox, axle, all have oil seals to keep the oil in.. They all also get nice and hot, and in the case of things like lorry axles, VERY hot.. Now, you go driving into that nice freezing cold water.. What happens?? I will tell you.. The axles, hubs etc are all suddenly cooled down. The air in them contracts, and sucks the water in past the seals. You vehicle is now fucked..
That's what the breathers are for, the properly prepared 4x4s will have them linked to the air box or into the cab.
Doubt many have though?? Thermal shock will not help any of the thing, each to their own though!@@jeremytodd4906

Toyota Land Cruiser T3 KWR registration is a bit strange. Even the air intake is elevated, but seemingly the water leaked in somehow. Bizarre.
The silver Mitsubishi is understandable, air intake was not high enough. Poor cars in wrong hands .
