⭐️If you’ve enjoyed these finds check out my find of the year! czcams.com/video/Htdjhb1quPo/video.html ⭐️
The spike thingy is a fid used for rope-work, e.g. making splices or working knots. The groove at the butt end is for tying a lanyard that would be tied to your person so you could take it up in the rig and not lose it if you dropped it.
You're right duck. It's a splicing needle or spike. I used a pair of splicing needles on steel haulage rope down the pit, somthing I qas taught by a rope man when I was 17 back in 1977 .it actually served me well throughout my career working in the ripping, headings, and back rips, etc. Another dying skill. Have a wonderful New Year, duck.
That'll be a Marlinspike then.
Yep sailor’s fid, if only it could speak! It would say ‘oh not another knot’ 😂
@@SifindsI think you could infuse that with resin, of any colour, if you want that to last. And it would look pretty cool if there was the colour of the Thames infused in it!
@@laurieleannie nice idea that. There’s method of drying out wood which has worked well. So hopefully it will be stable as is 👍🏻🐾🧡
Do yourself a favor and order a rear view camera for your bike! I did and it was a game changer! No pesky mirrors to deal with and you'll never be looking over your shoulder
That’s a great idea! Where does the screen go?
@@Sifinds the screen mounts easily to your handle bars. Only takes 2 minutes to install everything!
You should always check your blind spots! Called a life saver in motorcycle training/riding, never get out of that habit!
Concretions like the ones with the coin and the thimble are often the result of 2 dissimilar metals in close proximity in an electrolyte such as brackish water or water with tannic acid content. Decaying vegetation such as is found in river bottom mud can produce tannins.
Always check the concretion ('crud') for more inclusions.
Nice Bike BTW.
Happy New Year Si!
Very interesting cheers Dan!
Wow, such an intelligent little dog! She knew the piece of wood was too far away, so she brought it closer!
Take care of that bike, Simon! Lock it up well when you're out on the foreshore -- it could be mighty tempting for some one to take off with! Happy New Year!!!
I hear ya dude. Which is why I bought a big chunky chain. In fact, between you and me, I parked it in an enclosed car park for free! Less chance of it getting nicked one would hope
@@Sifinds -- Yep! Those things look amazing -- Northern Mudlarks got a pair and they work really well for them. I'd love to get one since regular biking is now difficult with my artrhitic knee, but they are expensive *AND* in my area they get stolen (with serious chains/locks even) often.... Hmmm -- I am remembering a way to wire up the ignition coil of an old (6V) VW Beetle so that when anyone touches any of the metal on the bike, they'd get a serious shock! Haha!!!
Happy 2024, Simon! Here's to a new year full of amazing and historical finds! Love your channel!
Cheers Kathie. Happy New Year! 👍🏻🐾🧡
Poppy needs her own channel!!! P.S. so glad you're wearing your helmet on the bike. ❤
Yes that would be fun! Safety first. Cheers Mudlover! Happy New Year👍🏻🐾🧡
The wooden stake is a vampire stake for killing vampires. 😊
Thank you for taking us on the ride to your digs.
The spike is called a Marlin Spike, it's used to loosen rope from its moorings and for fancy knot work. The groove is for a line to keep it attached to the belt.
It is a fid.
@@ArrDee49 Never heard that one before. In the US Navy, we call it a Marlin spike.
A marlinspike is used in working with wire rope, natural and synthetic lines, may be used to open shackles, and is made of metal. A fid is used to hold open knots and holes in canvas, and to separate the "lays" (or strands) of synthetic or natural rope for splicing. Traditionally made of hardwood.
Love hearing you and Jules get a chuckle on…..and poppy needs her own show…lol
The coin stuck in the rock makes it look really old, and adds to it's story. Also, love that new bike. You can travel with ease and in class!!!🥰🥰🥰😎🙏🙏🙏
Happy New Year’s Simon! I think your new bike is the perfect way to reach the hard to get to locations. Best wishes for Luck in the Muck in 2024!🎉
Right! Cheers Mudlover! Happy New Year👍🏻🐾🧡
I’m sure Poppy loves it when you show up. I always learn something new from your finds - now I know what a fid is an its use. Happy New Year!
Cheers Mudlover! Happy New Year👍🏻🐾🧡
The stick is a fid used for rope splicing. I have a metal one with a broad arrow. 😄
That’s cool!
I love your bike. It’s the perfect thing for larking about London 😊. It certainly beats the days I cycled about England on my Raleigh Ladies Touring Bike ,no gears ,facing such challenges as an almighty steep hill alongside ( if memory serves me)Chesil beach. Ah those were the days .I’ve got great legs to this day, which you’ll miss out on with that machine.Oh well, can’t have everything.
Happy New Year!
You should get a few of your to come to Carlisle Cumbria cricket club is having a archaeology dig that anyone can help them also Appleby Cumbria are doing a archaeology dig that anyone can help them. Found Romans finds & going on display in tullie house museum Carlisle opposite Carlisle castle.
Always fun and interesting to follow you on your mud marking adventures !
Looking forward to your 2024 videos!
Happy muddy new year !
Happy new year Liz 👍🏻🐾🧡
I think that first item is the frame of a pair of opera glasses. Large hole for the tubes, small one for the focus screw
Good shout!
Great way to start off the new year with a Si Finds video. Love the bike & the three adventures. Happy New Year to you, the kitties, and the chicks!
Cheers Mudlover! Happy New Year👍🏻🐾🧡
What a great start to the new year…..love every thing you do, your videos are top class and content means we all keep coming back for more, what a great hammered coin find…you had, that’s a keeper
Next time you mudlark and Poppy is there bring a pocket full of kitty treats or a big dog bone keep her busy.
I hope you have a really strong lock for your bike
That tool you dug up looks like a fid which is a tool used in rope braiding and making. Happy New Year!!!
All the best in 2024 Simon. I love the bike and you look great on it. Thanks for all the incredible videos in 2023. Take care and cheers.🥂
Cheers LS! Happy New Year!👍🏻🐾🧡

HNY Sharon! Many thanks!
What a fantastic gift! Poppy waiting for you to throw a ball or piece of wood for her. You want to work and she wants to play. What a face on that Bellamine jug piece. Loved the Wally reference. Could that sharpened piece of wood be for repairing fishing nets?
Wishing you a very happy New Year Si . 🎆🎊
Good shout Coni, I have seen other fids elsewhere.
Cheers Mudlover! Happy New Year👍🏻🐾🧡
@@Sifinds Happy New Year to you and yours.

Cheers Mudlover! Happy New Year👍🏻🐾🧡
Happy 2024. I look forward to new adventures. Love the new bike. The best way to get around London.
Si, I hope you have a very happy new year!
Si, be sure and always secure your e-bike well. In America they are currently the #1 item stolen because they are easily sellable due to demand. I use 2 uncuttable locks. Happy New Year 2024.
Definitely leave the coin, but you need to put the whole thing in a container of Foreshore water. It needs to very slowly be allowed to acclimate to freshwater & then slowly reduce the moisture content. Otherwise it will all just break apart and crumble away.
❤lovely find! Thanks for all the great adventures of 2023.
Great advice thank you
Finally caught up! I've been watching ALL your videos for months now. Love your channel and love your upcycling and creativity too. Can't wait to see more of your adventures.

Great Cyrusher!
Cheers Mudlover! Happy New Year👍🏻🐾🧡
@@Sifinds Than you, Simon!
It is for working with ropes. Like opening up a twisted rope to splice another piece of rope. I've used something smaller to do netting in macramé and netting.
Leave it like it is !! Looks really cool xx
Ooh I say don't tempt me re that stick ......Happy New year Mudlover x
I hope you had a good xmas si and have a good new year🎉🎉🎉

10:47 That is a piece of an old pair of opera glasses.
24:22 IS A STAKE TO KILL A VAMPIRE WITH AND ALL YOU NEED NOW IS TO FIND THE HAMMER. 🦇🦇🦇
Haha Don’t ‘Count’ on it 😂
Wow Si! What a great sponsor! If you’re going to spend a lot of time on it, it is totally worth taking to a pro bike shop where they will make all the adjustments to make sure you’re body geometry is perfect for you. Also a rear view camera if you’re using in the city. As always, wonderful video! Happy New Year 🎉 and wishing amazing luck in the muck in 2024! 🤗
Cheers Laurie. Great tips!
@@Sifinds Si, if you’re ever up in Perthshire, a collab with John The Scottish Detectorist would be so great. He has some very nice permissions and I know he watches you and Nic 😉

Hi Simon, I am new to Mudlarking, and have been watching your channel & a few other Mudlark channel's on here for about 6 months now. I wanted to say that you & Nicola have the best personality & sense of humor for this type of hobby. I really do enjoy watching your content. Thanks. Kes (Nova Scotia Canada)
Leave the rock whole ! Polish the bottom of it smooth or cut it flush. Glue some felt on and use it as a paper weight! I’d buy something like that.
Happy New Year, Simon! Thanks for an entertaining 2023 and anticipation for an even better 2024. When I saw that "fid" thingy, the first thing I thought of was a stake to pierce a vampire's heart. Would certainly have done the job! Stay well, friend.
Haha! Yes a stake is a good shout! Not sure we had vampires, we defo had witches! 🧙♀️
Happy new year Simon and all your mud buddies cheers❤
Cheers Mudlover! Happy New Year👍🏻🐾🧡
Happy New Year Si 🎉 I hope 2024 is another epic year for you 👍
