- So after making the video on how to make "X" Horsepower in a Subaru WRX STI, you guys wanted on one the FA20DIT WRX. So here ya go! Remember there are multiple ways to make power, there are multiple parts you can use.
This is my list of what parts I suggest and the modification path I would follow.

Just to toss it out there, you mention colder plugs and the NGK 2309's. I made this mistake today and picked those up, when the FA doesnt use those plugs and the plug my tuner said to use are actually the BRZ plugs, part # 22401AA801.
Thank you, spaced the part numbers were not same same. Pinned 🔥
@@Smeedia should update description, i almost bought the 2309's until i saw this comment.
You can just buy the stock range plugs. They work just fine until you are extremely modified and built.
@@kclove86 I went flex right away so my tuner said to do the plugs.
Oops , I did not see this comment , and basically added the same comment below yours . I have a brand new set of 2309's , because I too made that mistake .
Man, I need to thank you so much. Your videos are very helpful! Clear. Informative. Unbiased. I’m not new to modding or building cars, but I am new to the boxer turbo motors. Strong work! Thanks!
Anytime and glad I could help! 🔥😁
Yay. I am almost there. This is why I reach out to you my friend the amount of information and the knowledge you help deliver to make building safe and fun is amazing. Keep it pushing.
Just glad I can help 🔥😁
Why do you read my mind tanner I was just looking for a good build list to see what else I need to get for my Wrx and you just save the day like always!
I got youuu 🔥🔥🔥
This has to be one of the best car CZcams videos in history, so informative man. I plan on buying a wrx sometime in the near future and I will definitely refer back to this
Eyyyy good luck om your search my friend!
Man a wealth of information to all of our Subie brother and Sisters out there in Subie Nation. A great video, brother. Stay safe.
You as well Paul ans have a good weekend!
Truthfully i didn’t watch this because i have a 02 bug eye, but you make videos I wish were around since the beginning of time. Very educational and informing thanks for the great content!
Eyyyy, appreciate the support and feedback my friend 🔥🙏
Awesome! Thanks for making this video. Honestly had some ideas on what I was shooting for in my 16 WRX (roughly 350-400whp), and now having this to really pinpoint what is necessary and what will keep it reliable is amazing. Keep up with the awesome content! Always looking forward to your uploads 😊
Glad I could help and keep us posted on how thr modding goes!
@@Smeedia of course! Thanks for the reply!
@@tylerpowell8237 any updates bud? thinking of how much power i wanna make out of my '19 rex and am just tryna see as many routes to go as possible
I have a 2020 WRX BASE with the FA20 and I’m running N1 invida single exit exhaust. LPFP which is the AEM 340 w/ the DW kit and running an E50 tune. Everything else is stock n im tuned by Daniel Florez. Floreztuning. Makin around 400. Prolly closer to 370-380ish but that’s in 95+ degrees
Thanks for the vid men we literally asked you for it n you came up w it 2 days later. Very informative
Try to get them out quickly when I can 🔥🙏
Everything I have been looking for in one video amazing 🙏🏻 for whatever reason I have kind of realized a lot of FA owners are very secretive about how they make certain power numbers. There are a few out there that are open but this is 🔥🔥 and I will make sure to blame you if the motor blows out of respect 😂
😉😉😉
Always helping Subaru community! Great post and very accurate!
❤🙏❤🙏
No I'm blaming you for my engine blowing I'm March lol but honestly dude I'm glad you put up a video like this up because all the information I found out I had to do months and months of research so I can build my car the way it is now. So your info can help the any everyone so they don't gotta look hard
Hopefully helps some peeps out 🔥 try to save everyone some time 🙏
@@Smeedia trust me it I believe it will because something like that could had saved me sometime but I'm a car nerd I probably would had did some research not as much
Nope, I will have them pulled up but I'll rarely look at them. I know my cars well, I built my cars so I know how they're going to respond. If thr car starts acting up, throwing a fit or doing some weird shit then I'll start looking at the data.
Subarus aren't made of glass, when they're properly built you have very minor issues
Just bout a 2016 WRX on Tuesday… NEEDED this video 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Yessss!!!! Congrats on the car!
@@Smeedia Appreciate that! Thanks for the great and informative videos
Welcome to the gang
This video was awesome!!! Thanks Tanner! I thought I was losing it. I have stage 2 block so I figured FP was best option for a little more
Solid set up 🔥😁
@@Smeedia thanks man! I have quite a bit done now... but next power mod is gonna be the flex fuel and AEM340. Hope I can start pushing some nice numbers. My curve is nuts now with the BRZ manifold 😈
Quality video! Can you also make a quick video elaborating more on supplemental mods when getting more power? Things like suspension/control arms, transmission/clutch, and even the viability of "longevity" mods, like pitch mount braces, etc. Thanks!
I can put something like that together 🔥💪
Been waiting for a video like this for a while now thanks man!
Anytime! 🔥😁
Dude thank you for doing this video! I’ve been following you for a while. But now I’m going to go engine mods to try to make at least 300. I bought a 2020 wrx series white last year for xmas and just did exterior so far. Was worried about doing engine mods cause of Every one horror stories about fa20. But watching your channel it made realize that most people don’t get pro tune or Etune and that’s why they have problems also have a good shop near me called kozmic and a e85 station about 3 miles from my house so going flex fuel with access port, intake and jpipe catted and exhaust this January.
I know of kozmic, assuming your down in thr Houston area? Super good shop!
@@Smeedia yes sir!
I’m in the process of building my fa20 right now and this is going to help a lot!!
Eyyyyy, perfect timing 😁🔥
I'm 13 months in. Almost ready for install. Waiting on nostrums new dit fuel injectors
My sti came in Nov. 11th. Accessport is getting bought this coming Friday. Can’t wait to get it so I can begin!
Yassss!!! 🥵🔥
I appreciate you mentioning the CVT, & basically confirming how far I planned to go w/ my fxt. It's hella fun for a CVT, & it'd be absolutely perfect if it came in manual. unfortunately I need the practicality of the X-over; as it is it's hard as hell not to trade it in and get a new BRZ. Love the channel, keep it up!
Figured I'd touch in it 🔥😁 definitely a fun car. Would he. Blast if they made a DSG version!
As soon as you said CVT I was like oh here we go lol it’s almost not worth the extra hassle to try and go above 330Hp. I’m learning lots from your videos but still much more to learn before I do anything major to the engine
Am I the only one that was shocked when he said top mount intercooler? Great video dude! Thank you!
I'll alqays prefer a FMIC but won't deny that a top mount is good on the FAs 🔥🙏
@@Smeedia I have a 2020 WRX with FA and I have the Cobb big SF with MAPerformance Down pipe and Invidia R400 catback.
I’m wanting to install grim speed charge pipe upgrade top mount cooler, AOS and boost controller. When I take it to get protuned should I also have an egr delete and TGV delete. Will it help at this stage 2 level. My end goal would be around 300+ hp since this is my daily driver I want to keep it conservative but still reliable. Thanks love the videos
We asked and he delivered… thank you so much for the video 🍻
I got youuuu 🔥😁
Just bought a 2017 WRX cannot wait to mod it after I add a few cheaper interior & exterior details. Shooting for a 340whp range these mod lists will def help. Will be my first time modding a Subaru after making the jump from Hondas lol..
Eyyyy, congrats on the car my dude!
Note on the Grimmspeed J-pipe. As far as the ECU is concerned it is catless even though there is a cat at the end. Because it's not between the two o2 sensors you'll still get a p0420 code. I'm trying to deal with that on NY yearly emissions testing and Cobb combating emission defeats with the Accessport. If you live in a state that does yearly obd testing like NY I'd recommend Cobb's or a similar catted j-pipe that has one between the o2 sensors.
Thanks for making this video! Love to see content on my car haha.
Can’t wait for Process West to release their intake manifold 🤞🏼
Btw. 400whp Fa20 here👋🏼 1 year at this power so far and going strong!
Maintenance, Tune, and Driving Habits is 🔑
PW is making an intake manifold? 👀
Yess the video I’ve been looking forward too 💯💯
💪💪💪
Good on you for recommending catted parts! I went full catless on my previous car, chasing that extra 10HP... and as time went on, I had spent 10 years of my life driving around an obnoxiously smelly (and polluting) car. Oh, and I almost wasn't able to trade it in! Thankfully, I kept the stock header & exhaust.
For those of you who still want to move ahead with TGV and EGR deletes - Cobb no longer allows tuning for that, so I went to an ECUTek tune on my 2020 WRX. Cobb Big SF intake, Cobb catted resonated j-pipe, Invidia R400, TGV & EGR deletes and GrimmSpeed 3-port boost control solenoid. Car is making 325 whp and 335 lb-ft after the tune. Very satisfied with the result. AOS is getting installed very soon, TMIC next.
Ecutek doesn’t allow those either lol
@@ParkerOviedo I think that going forward you might be right. I heard they are going the Cobb route as well, unfortunately.
Watched this with low power goals myself just cuz I was curious. Wow this got crazy quickly
Adds up quick 😖
Hell ya,! Great video brother as usual. Keep up the great work!

my 17 STI has 262hp at the wheels with the same mods minus the access port but was dyno tuned with ECUTEK
@@micko9111 that seems low for those parts on a sti
@@chadm6805 yeh im not sure why could be a low reading dyno and im also in Australia but as far as i was aware here isnt any difference between American hp and Australian hp.we use kw also mine hit 196
kw which is 262hp i talked to the tuner and he said 270kw is the max for stock internals so i still got another 73kw i can put in the car yet, also i checked some tuners here in aus who did the wrx with stage 2 downpipe e.c.t they only hit 160kw so im not sure how you get your numbers in the usa
Switching over to flex fuel soon. Got my sensor and fuel pump in the mail yesterday 🙏🏻

So pumped! Next wednesday getting the grimmspeed j pipe and stealth box intake and the cobb boost controller. Tuned by Kinetic Motorworks. Love these videos for all the good info.
Lemme know how it feels once tuned 🔥🔥🔥
For sure. Getting a baseline pull on the dyno, all I have on it right now is a Borla catback. (2021 WRX) I will let you know the before and after.
Just got back from Kinetic Motorworks. Baseline with only a Borla catback was 242 WHP and after was 292 WHP. Feels and sounds so good but one thing is for sure and that this is only the beginning.
Dude I’m gonna go w kinetics sometime in the next year. Message me lol

Awesome video man! Really went into detail on everything which ik alot of us appreciate. Keep up the awesome videos and the great info bud. Just one question though when would you look into getting the Cobb flex fuel kit?

About 400ish whp 🤙 torque is what will kill it but typically sound that point
Good video not saying I picked the best options Cobb TMIC with charge pipe-Cobb j pipe-Invidia N-1 exhaust-Cobb-Big-sf intake- Cobb Bpv- Iridium catch cans {Will need to make mods to fit with Cobb SF intake} was not a huge deal. Things left to install Grimspeed turbo inlet and cobb boost controller. I want TGV and EGR deletes just not Shure for the state of Colorado yet. If I make 300 WHP when I go to get tuned, I will be happy. Then maybe E30 to E60 conversion more for the protection of the engine for when I go to Mexico.
Yessss, sounds like a solid plan! 🔥
I agree to a certain extent with most of what you said. Every (stock) block will be different and the longevity or reliability of it will be different from the next car. Also the driving habits of the owner will also play on the longevity of engine no matter what modifications have been placed for reliability.
That being said, I do have a 2015 wrx 120k miles tuned at 440/375 on e and 335/329 on pump.
Current build list:
TurboXS DP
Invidia N1 single cat back
Tomei ELH
Boomba BPV (stock rate springs)
Steamspeed 71R IWG turbo (500hp rated)
Grimmspeed 3port
ETS FMIC
Mishimoto “race version” intake
Perrin AOS
Perrin turbo inlet
Stock range spark plugs
Tuned by English Racing.
Now I have taken the time to search through these parts and do the comparison to the “popular” build list. This is what I have found to be a strong setup. Again all cars are not the same, and I have noticed that the parts that do well on the EJ don’t have the same performance gains on the FA platform. Now at my current power, the car is comfortable and drives just as well as stock.
Plans for the future:
IBR BRZ manifold kit
BRZ intake manifold
IBR secondary injection controller
ID 1k-1.3k injectors
IBR fuel rails (port injection)
The plan is to push my stock block as far as I can reasonably before switching to a “built” block and HPFP. Now these are my own opinions and thoughts.
Please keep me posted on the injector set up once you get it installed.
Been very keen to see how well they do with port injection
Interested to know if/when you plan on upgrading the stock clutch. Also been hearing some horror stories about the tranny taking a dump but that’s a bridge to cross when you’re there.
@@xil3ntkha0s so I have heard the same kind of horror stories with the current FA transmission. Personally I think a lot of that come from people driving their car constantly hard/ not giving it time to cool down. Also constantly launching the car. Generally speaking, constantly launching a vehicle with destroy the transmission, drive lines and components. Yet people will continue to do these things and call the transmission trash. They don’t mention the 150 launches they did in the last couple days before it blew up while driving. From what I have seen, they “can” be as strong as the older sti transmissions.
As far as swapping the clutch, I plan on doing that as soon as I notice it starts to slip. As of currently, the clutch is still very strong and has a good amount of life left in it(2-3 years conservatively). When I do replace it I plan on a stage 2 clutch or a exiddy double disk clutch. Depends on how the car is handling at the time and the power it is at when it’s time for the replacement.
Nice! now to shop for parts👍🏼
Make that powaaaa 💪💪💪
Thank you so much. This is so helpful
Glad I could help 🔥😁

By the way, ETS makes a full turbo kit for the fa20. They offer several precision turbos the biggest being a 6466 gen 2. Comes with ewg headers and an intake.
I know, I left their kit out since most people want go that extreme
To reliably make proper use of the 6466 you’re talking about a full on build and it’s not cheap a friend of mine just did this after the junk stock fa20 took a shit making a measly 278whp the new build was 50k in total
I would love to see this kind of video but for early 2000’s wrx/sti’s

Eyyy appreciate the support and the feedback. Here to help where I can 🙏
Keep in mind that with BRZ/FRS intake manifold that you will need different front mount intercooler pipe kit. The throttle body faces the front of the car on the BRZ manifold, instead of back of car. This is actually a good thing because you have less pipe length and bends on a FMIC.
If you're planning on making big power, you can start with BRZ manifold and block off the port injection ports (there are kits), then get a FMIC kit that supports the BRZ manifold.
Also the red metal BRZ intake manifold looks awesome. No more black plastic.
Or ibr makes a port injection swap
You talk to much you sucks That’s why the world is f up your f
Can you just ran brz engine on wrx that’s been built for 300kw

Amazing job bro ! This is the vidia of all vidias (video)Hey iv got a working prototype on exhaust option...
Instead of trying to get ther rumble back on FA DIT with headers. by for some crazy reasons they Assumed that the uneven headers on the EJ is what made the rumble mistaken they were. however I definitely honor their try and effort we all want that rumble back Anyone that's been around or owned an EJ and is moved to an FA platform 2015 and up model . Than definitely misses the rumble. I'm Using my prototype now trying to get some acoustic good sound bites/videos to upload to my channel and I'm in process of getting patent and copyright to put to market . It will come in a axel back and or 1 peice cat backs option. I'm in prosses of speaking to in hopes to strike deal with Cobb and or ETS ( Extreme Turbo systems, exhaust) in fact that's the axel backs iv installed it on now is ETS. it was on a Cobb but they got damaged by a tow truck driver so I cut it out and re-welded to EST axel back... won't lie and say it's tuned to every Pitch and tone but most definitely sounds very close Close enough for iv been asked few times at car shows people ask me if I have EJ -swap .... but if I don't get the deal I want from Cobb or EST Then I'll just private run it and see how it goes if anyone can help invest with this project hit me up I'm maken another start up business on top of my other 2 that is my career but this side hobbie typw business this product will be a product of

Really good video. Can we still take these same pathways make more power with our FA20's now that Cobb changed there tuning platform due to EPA standards? I'm asking in reference to keeping my 2017 WRX street legal.
GS intake and r400 with an e30 tune I’m at 315 whp 😅 can’t wait to throw on a j pipe and the flex fuel kit
Cheers smeedia!
🍻
Grimmspeed just came out with a metal turbo inlet. I'm running the Perrin one ATM and thinking about picking up the GS one.
I’m thinking of getting that as well! Just came out a couple days ago 😅
Saw that one, there's a few metal ones that have been out for a few years now 🔥
Awesome vid. Thank you for doing this. Are you familiar with the MAP intake? They seem to have better OTS tunes. Is the Cobb intake kind of the “standard”?.
Haven't seen any flow data from it but I know it's a popular one 🔥
I've had one installed for several years and haven't had any issues. Build quality is great. The heat shield has a notch to allow you to use the intake snorkel as well. If I could do it over, I would skip the OTS map and go straight to an etune.
ETS make an fa20 turbo kit that comes with headers and external wastegates with multiple turbo options to support the 500+ numbers.
Very true 🔥 left that kit out since most people will not go that far or want to spend that much
Just bought my first WRX today! It’s a 2015 cvt, wish i got manual but my girlfriend doesn’t know stick:( would i be safe getting everything in the 350hp build you suggested? And at what points of the built should i be tuning and if so should i eTune or look to proTune? I have read a lot of negatives about the catted j pipes but i would loveeee to install one because i think they sound amazing with the r400! Hope to hear from you and going to continue to watch your videos for this journey!😊
For any wrx owners looking into modifying your car. Go with Phatbotti tuning, he specializes only on the FA20 motor so he knows his shit and his main focus is reliability and safety. I’m tuned by him and am FBO e85 pushing around 375-380whp & 350lbft torque which is probably the highest you want to go on stock block and internals.
Would you recommend that over a local protune if money is not an object?
@@bestkickz2464 depends on if your local shop is reputable. If you get it tuned on the dyno it’ll only be a day but if you get an e tune it takes about a month with phatbotti. Ecspecially if your running ethanol, the process will take longer cause basically your tuning the car twice since you have to tune for the base pump gas and then on e60
@@Grimmspeed715 i live in maryland so I might just pony up for iag. I’ve been wondering, if I go flex fuel do I need 2 maps if say I need to run 93 in a pinch?
@@bestkickz2464 everything is on just one map. You can be at any percentage of ethanol content (below e65) and it’s tuned so that it automatically adjusts the map to the ethanol content in your tank. So no worries about having to switch maps or anything.
I HIGHLY recommend going with flex fuel, it’s really the only way to make substantial power gains. Plus you only need a few things to run it (Cobb flex fuel sensor, Grimmspeed EBCS, DW or AEM LPFP).
Personally I have the AWE tuning track exhaust on my FA wrx and I think it’s one of the best on the market for FAs and EJs
Heard some good things about them 🔥
Have it also on my wrx best
Is the AWE a 3” flange where it mates to the jpipe?
@@xil3ntkha0s I believe so yes
Much appreciated bro...God Bless...
❤🙏❤🙏
Thx for the FA20 content. Not gonna push my '16 wrx past 400whp, being a daily driver. Boy, it gets $$$ real quick!
Starts to add up suuuuuprr fast 😖😖
LETS GOOO I been waiting for this video 🥲
Im trynna make as much as I can safely, so 350-60 is the goal on e60, do you think CAÍ and exhaust manifold, necessary for that?
By necessary I mean would it still be reliable and what would be the hp loss without that? 10-20hp?
I would still suggest them 🔥💪
@@Smeedia thank you for replying 🙌🏼
Ets turbo kit wasn’t mentioned and I agree I’m craving more power now that I been at 400 for one year but it’s just too pricey
ok this is a lil older vid. I have a 2021 wrx. Trying to decide on headers I have all the other standard bolt on parts lol. was looking at Grimspeed headers killer bee is nice just a lil more cash. The last thing I rly want to change is the intake manifold I just hate the plastic look more than anything tbh Is an aftermarket intake manifold that keeps the top mount cooler that looks good made? That plastic crap had me looking for engine covers LMFAO. Gratz on Starting up and pushing thru on your sti build wanting that vid!!!
Thank you! And grimmspeed is a good option as well! For the manifold I'd definitely suggest a BRZ mani
@@Smeedia thank you can I use my cobb top mount with that or is it a front mount intake only? the plastic intake look kills me tbh.
I have a '14 Levorg 1.6 (very similar platform to CVT WRX), thinking of sticking with the Stage 1 mods listed. Hoping they'll work well with a good tune. If I had to choose between intake and J-Pipe, which one would I forgo?
What do you recommend for wheel bearings assembly replacement. Oem is best but is there a cheaper alternative that will last as long? Any way to protect these so they don’t fail so fast? Would love a video on this. You the best smeeeeeeeediaaa!
Your information is great but what about a video on mods about suspension and braking with increase in power for safety
Going to diffrent for each set up I.E: Street vs track etc. But can make something happen 🔥
YES WRX!!
💪💪💪💪
Awesome, thanks! I just picked up a new 21 WRX premium a little over a month ago. Probs gonna hold off on any mods for a while, but when I'm ready to get it modded and protuned, do you have any reputable tuners you can recommend anywhere in western WA state? Closest major cities to me Seattle and Everett but willing to travel for good tuners
All are south unfortunately, surgeline, English and PRE 🔥
I thought it was gonna be a one minute video when he intros, says “heres how to make more powah, buy an STI. That’s it homies, WOOOOOOOO!” 😅🤣
This is awesome info. For the 350WHP The way i understood is was either run:
1. E30 or meth with TGV/EGRs intact
2. Pump gas with TGV/EGR deletes.
E85 is accessible for me but I'd rather not have to mix. I guess in that case just go straight to flex fuel sensor with injectors and tune it down maybe better?
No injectors needed, it's direct injected 🙏 and you'll need either flex fuel or methanol for 350. One or the other
Yo Tanner. Love the information you provide in your videos! I'm not sure if this was asked before or maybe I missed it in the video. Do you think just going forged internals on a stock block would be good for around the 450 range? Or should i just go with a built block? I figured since the rods are usually the main issue it might work. Not really aiming for 500 plus until a while later.
Totally do-able. Rods are the weakest point. Just make sure the block gets machined before slapping internals into it
@@Smeedia Thanks man!
thank you!
💪💪💪
Goooooood content as usual! BTW, turbo blankets. Trust me.
Thank you 🔥🔥🔥
Sweet mercy! Talk about response times! Lol!
I already added on UEL headers 🥲heard u still can make gains but turbo lag is a issue but I’m planning to grab PLM headers since they at a affordable range, also since we direct injection you forgot to add on that we do sometimes need maintenance for walnut blasting
Left maintance out, should be done regardless but good point to add 🤙
🔥🔥 vid
Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
If you get the cobb sf intake i would recommend the iwire maf harness due to the cobb one not being the greatest
Good addition to add 🔥
just got Tomei UEL header on 15 wrx, it's 300whp sounds so good, deff not best for power but the rumble ;)
How is it holding up after a year
Second this question.
must not be haha @@filimonasefaw1567
WOOOOOO IT'S MADEEE
😁😁😁
Subispeed did a video where they had Graham at boosted performance tune their wrx and all they did was take off the tomei UEL headers and put on the grimmspeed header and it was building boost sooner. Had increased torque and HP by around 30. So the tomei UEL header just isn't recommended.
That UEL header is a big no no 🙅♂️
Hey Tanner! I need help making around 350 hp. What would you specifically look up as your recommended parts to reach that power for a 2020 wrx because im having a really hard time trying to find the parts you listed out for some reason. Please help
