Restoring an Abandoned Mazda RX7 EP. 8 Paint Job Gone Wrong...
For my first time painting, I'll say that it's not the best, not the worst type of situation. The amount of time you spend on prep work alone is so time-consuming to make little mistakes that can just ruin everything. Nothing that can't be fixed, Once we wet sand and polish I think the paint will come out perfect! I could be wrong though.

While the interior may not be seen once the car is back together that doesn't mean that we still won't paint it. Getting the interior done will be a HUGE Step forward for us as we can start re-assembling a lot of stuff back onto the chassis. I have been dreading the interior restoration because of how long it took to strip everything down. But for my second time painting, I couldn't be any happ...
The Perfect Size Wheel + Tire Combo for a Toyota Tacoma

We are giving my 2017 Toyota Tacoma a little bit of love and fitting some 275/70 tires on this thing. When it came to picking out a tire size I did not want to compromise too much of the Truck's characteristics. That meant, No rubbing, no having to cut the body or frame, no smashing in fender wells etc. This way I can still use the truck day to day as my daily without worry and still take it on...

Building a Forgotten Mazda RX7 EP. 5 Painting using Subaru Colors

Huge steps on the 1993 Mazda RX7 today, finally getting some paint onto this car. This is my first time painting with an actual legit set up so I do not have any experience going into this. But if I can figure it out anyone can do it. we are painting the RX7 Aspen white from Subaru (Paint Code 51E). Using white should make painting a little bit easier as it is typically an easier color to paint...
Leveling my 3rd Gen Toyota Tacoma the Proper Way

Leveling your truck is a great way to improve the overall look of your Tacoma as well as to fit some larger tires under the front fenders. a lot of the leveling kits I've seen people do are spacer kits. and while they do work, you sacrifice your suspension travel limits, increase wear on other components, spring rates do not change, and more. Spacer kits are a good economical solution but can b...

I guess the inflatable booth is invisible? Was expecting to see some sort of bouncy house thing. Guessing it didn't fit?
There are a lot of knowledgeable people in the comments already and I'm not a professional painter, but, when doing my own DIY paint job on a track bike I found fixing runs with masking tape to be very effective. Just lick the run with the tape and then do another coat. Feasible when it's not the final coat 😅
Another thing my paint instructor taught me was to drape my air hose over my shoulder. I'm right handed so the air hose would be behind me and draped over my left shoulder. This insures you never drag your hose in your paint I think you're doing a great job for self teaching yourself. I like guys that take the initiative to do things themselves Work on keeping your 6 ish inch gun distance and your spray speed more consistent. I think you're well on your way to being a proficient painter. Keep it up
8:09 what happened to using the inflatable paint booth? Did i miss something
Yeah, this was my question as well. I was full on expecting to see one of those bouncy house looking things!
Beautiful white, love it! Any idea what a little ticking noise from the engine would be when letting off the gas?
Dude change your fan angle
no lube on fasteners? looks like your trying to twist the rod when torquing bolts !! LOL!!
You did amazing!!! I agree, you did go too slow for the clear coat. You are always better off doing 7 thin coats then 3 thick. I did the exact same thing the first few times i painted 😅 for the roof i have found it best to do just around the pillars then do the center of the roof after. It can help fix that issue. A weird trick to clear coat is to use a semi gloss base and high gloss clear. You can also smooth and dull the paint and work with the reflection for laying clear. I opted for semi base then high gloss as i found it easier. Also makes the car look different depending on light.
Is there a difference between powder coating and using spray? Seems like both achieve the same results.
Bro… get bodevision to paint it for you… your first paint project is a seam project? 😂
20:47 this thing is gonna be sema bound in no time at all, just take your time and I will eventually stop commenting on you content. I just want the best for you and your build ….. and it’s gonna be amazing
19:00 sheeeeew I thought I was gonna be much worse according to the name of the video, just be careful with the blade when trying to get the runs out. You can sand with wet 1500 and it will take forever but you shouldn’t burn thru, and after that you can run over it with 2000 grit to follow up. After that you can use 2500 and 3000 on a d.a. with a soft interface pad and you will be golden.
12:08 shit….. I hope you re scotch brighted all the parts of the panel you are trying to recover….. 🙏other wise you are either gonna get solvent pop or the base and clear will not stick over time. Damnit I hope you get this figured out before the spot I am at on this video. Best of luck tanner
Sooooo sick man I am gonna buy this for mine thanks for the video
You painted over metal spots 🤦🏻♂️
Where? Everywhere was primer
at this point you've pretty much done every single job in the automotive industry to your cars, the only thing left is collision repair. 😅
We’re working up to that 😂😅
Ohhhh crap that’s sealer if I am correct, along with the clumps before the setup you gotta open the fan on the spray gun a lil wider. Also when painting, priming, or sealing, you gotta work the panels left to right. You can’t spray the small of a fan up and down, dunno what’s gonna happen but I am always here to watch and who knows maybe help. Like you do every day, you have never ever not answered one of questions of the years.
I tried keeping the fan around 10” or so when painting. Tbh didn’t know how to swap the fan direction at first 😂
Don't start or stop your gun on the car. That is where your buildups and runs are happening.
Will keep that in mind when I do the rest of the panels 🫡
2:12 ohhhhh no, I don’t know how this ends up but the primer not being fully mixed is gonna be a bad time. I hope this isn’t the videos problem….
With that primer it doesn’t really mix up until it’s mixed with the solvent 🙏
Your Favorite STI year for fun, reliability, part availability, a true driving car, and workability?
Also give me an hour long video of you sanding and painting or detailing. I can watch that all day
2018+ if your using it as a daily if not than an 05 🙌
Not me stressing out watching you paint. I think I bit off all my finger nails. Came out great though! Better than anything I’ve done 🎉
Definitely a hard skill to learn but one that will def one in handy 🙌🥳 I was stressing about those meds ups 😅
So, if I am SC my 8th gen civic si with a kraftwerks kit, then I should go fluid damper? Since the SC blower relies on the crank pulley and belt, would the fluid damper lose power for me, because it is heavier? I was thinking of going lightweight pulley before I saw your video.
I only razor blade out runs in clear and only after it's completely dry. I'm a novice so I like to keep myself well within my skill range when painting lol.
That’s the plan for the clear, going to let it harden up and go at it. I thought I could do it with the base 😂😅
2010 2.5gt legacy *could* make for an interesting sleeper-build? havent seen much done with em
Not gonna lie man, super cool you have the patience to even attempt this. When it comes to body work, I have the patience/attention span of a fruit fly. Keep it up man, you’ll get better every day.
I was the same way tbh, I despise body work but gotta learn it at some point 😅
Runs are far less work to correct than an entire car sprayed dry to avoid any runs.
Very true, as annoying as the runs are we can at least fix those 💪
It’s takes about 100 to 200 total hours to completely break in any engine period.
Thats how you learn Bro.
Practice makes perfect 👌
Don't sweat the runs. Wet sand then buff and you'll forget it ever happened. You need to wet sand and buff if you want it to look perfect anyways.
Very true, I was so hyped it was all laying out smooth until that massive run 😂😅
I’m always impressed with your ability to tackle such a diverse array of challenges when it comes to your cars. I’m still proud of myself when I successfully install basic mods 😂 Really enjoying the RX-7 series!
I can’t wait to see this thing fully done 🥳 we gotta start somewhere and mods are the best place to start🎉
Race cars have flame and pops to cool the exhaust on circuit racing not the streets lol
Godsend. Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 11:55 Im gonna start my first ever forester build☺️☺️☺️
"SHMOO"
We gotta get all that shmoooo outta there 😂
I bet I can make more runs than you
Game on
You're doing better than me. I'm still watching other people do everything 😆
You’ll get there! Any luck with the FRS?
@@Smeedia just trade offers and tire kickers so far. If I don't have any solid interest by the weekend, I'm putting the stock wheels and coilovers back on and dropping the price
Painting a car yourself is one of those things where it's on the line between being too much & reasonable. I don't know how else to put it really. My friend painted his sr20det swapped Nissan NX2000 in his dilapidated garage. It wasn't perfect, but he did it himself, along with everything else done to that car. Aside from the ecu program & dyno tune anyway. He went with a very heavy metallic flake in a dark blue base, reminiscent of bass boats and whatnot. That garage had no business even acting as a temp paint booth. Overall though, the car was very "period correct" for it's era. He also had a 96 Impala SS at the time. That shit looks fine on camera dawg. It's more than up to SEMA quality standards even at this point 😆
If it’s a skill you can get decent at it’s definitely worth the savings long term if doing multiple cars. But my lord it’s more difficult than what it looks like 😅
You did a killer job for your first time doing an entire body without a full booth and lighting. The fender can be sanded and polished. Every clear gets polished once laid down (atleast the good ones)
Once it’s all polished and cleaned up I’ll be wayyyy happier with it. But for my first time I’m pretty happy with the outcome 🥳 more lighting would definitely help 😅
@@Smeedia I'm all about it! That white is gonna look 🔥 with the rx7 body once you cut and buff. Can't wait till September to see it ❤️
It's hard! I laid some epoxy primer for the first time a few weeks ago on my project 1972 Blazer frame. Once I turned the flow down and convinced myself that it doesn't need total coverage on every pass I stopped running paint.
I had that perfect spot with the old gun but have yet to find it with the new one. 😅 once you get that solid set up it’s 👌
I think you could make watching paint dry interesting, lol. The car actually looks really amazing, I forgot there was an antenna in the back, that delete came out great!
Super happy with the antenna delete, looks like it was never there 🥳
very well done :)
Thank you 🥳 a little clean up on the runs and we should be golden 🙏
The razor blade trick works pretty slick but only after the paint has cured, then wet sand the spot with 1500, 2000, 2500 and buff out
Going to wait for that clear to cure cure before even touching it 😅 but I’m glad it’s fixable 🔥🙌
i think you did great this first time its nothing that cant be fixed. the new setup worked well. in fact i think thats what was part of the problem. you could see it when you laid down your first layer. it covered so much and so fast the paint immediatly looked wet. your old setup was not as powerfull and you had time to slowly apply the layers.
That’s what I was noticing as well, the new gun and air set up worked way more efficiently. I was still used to having to go a bit slower 😅
Great job Grasshopper 🔥🪠
Thank you thank you 🙏🙏
So I'm sure you know probably by now but when your spraying hold the gun upright and paint left to right and use full motion strokes and overlap each stroke halfway. Never spray a car body up and down like you were here in this video. And spray a tad bit slower. With more consistency in your strokes.
Tbh I couldn’t figure out how to rotate the fan pattern at first 😂😅 once I got that worked out I went back to left to right
The problem with white is you can’t see a damn thing! Spray looks like it disappears as soon as you’re done with second coat.
Dude for real, you cannot see anywhere your spraying 😂😅
Wax on wax of danni son. You will definitely going to be a karate master by the time you’re done.
Practice makes perfect 🎉
Looks great man! Worst case scenario you have to clear coat again. You got this!
Is that allowed? Can you clear over clear? 😅
@@Smeedia I've seen lowriders with up to 12 coats of clear! Makes the paint look soooooo deep! Somehow it works though.
In the end, they paid more for the paint job than they did building the car.
With clear coat, I use a head lamp on my head while painting. Another trick with clear coat is multi coating lightly, takes some time to judge tacking and requires very clean room since more layers to trap crap in.
How well has the head lamp worked for you, I’ve got a small Milwaukee one I can use for the panels 👌
Tysm for your great content. Its helped me so much with my STI!! Question! Im going to get a Cobb AOS for emmisions purposes. How long is an AOS's lifespan and does it need maintenance over time? Like changing lines or cleaning anything??
Looking man im impress tanner u star by modification ,built and now paint whoooooooooooooo ❤❤❤ nice work
Trying to learn it all 🥳🙌
