  • This is a non-technical, regular guy impression of riding an automatic transmission motorcycle for the last year. I'm riding a Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports DCT, as well as Honda's CTX 700 DCT. What's it like to ride? Quirks? What's it like to not have a clutch? Pro's and Con's. Would I buy it again?

DCT is wonderful. Learn it understand it, and it trumps manual in almost every situation! I've ridden plenty of dirt, MX, Enduro bikes since 11. For this style bike, DCT is great in so many ways. Electronic suspension is way way cool also. Works incredibly well

THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST HONEST AND TRULY INFORMATIVE VIDEOS ON DCT !!
I have had an Africa Twin for about 4 months now and I'm soooo tired of these absolute planks taking a DCT out for an hour test drive and then giving an absolutely uninformed and actually unfair to a TOP manufacturer review 🤬🤬
EVERYTHING you have said is completely accurate, to give an HONEST review on the AT DCT you HAVE TO have had it for at least a couple of months to REALLY be able to use the DCT properly!!
And if you haven't had this bike for a sufficient time to KNOW WHAT YOUR FCUKING TALKING ABOUT !!!
YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO GIVE NEGATIVE REMARKS,
That could have a financial impact on the company or the reputation of said motorcycle.
Everything you have mentioned, I have experienced and therefore know you have indeed had this bike for a while, it takes a bit of learning and I'm not talking about the console !
Anybody that can operate a mobile phone will have no trouble with the console, you simply have to act like an intelligent adult and not just jump on the bike like a child ??
This is a bike that we will learn new things on for a long time, I pick up something new using the manual shift with the auto box all the time, its possibly the most interesting bike out there and I am going to struggle going back to the on - off power of a clutch when I can simply keep power on while changing through the gears.
Just wait , a DCT will blow away everything on a track but when they get to grips with brushless electronics in bikes, combustion will be finished 😉👍

Thank you! Yep, certainly not a bike you can just jump on and quickly understand all the differences. I love the AT!

      Cracking informative review mate 👍
I hope people look at this before taking any notice to these chaps that are little more than test riders making useless comments like its jumpy at low speed 🤔🤔
When they simply are not using it properly 😉👍

I wish more manufacturers offered a DCT.

Thanks for this nice stand on DCT. I'm a DCT disciple. A true convert. I'm thus compelled to defend the DCT technology on all those sub-standard reviews that do a disservice to Honda and a game changing technology. I have an XADV and now waiting for the NT1100. Motorcycling has now an added dimension and enhanced enjoyment with the advent of DCT. Thank you Honda for their dedication to technology! 👍😁

Just finished a ride with some very challenging (for me) terrain. The DCT handled it like a champ! Love the DCT.

I just bought my 2021 Africa Twin Adventure Sports DCT. Took it for 2-hour test ride and was hooked immediately - didn't miss that clutch at all. Your review makes total sense. Thank you!

Congrats! You're going to love that bike. Just get into a routine EVERY time... parking brake ON, parking brake OFF. Have fun!

This is a good review of the DCT. The use of the rear brake is an important tip. I had a '14 NC700 DCT, I whiskey throttled doing a slow left turn with the bars at full lock. It was a bit unnerving. I was fortunate to hit the kill switch. It wasn't until later that I learned about the rear brake trick.
It does seem that Honda has continued to improve the DCT. Enjoy your AT. Thanks for sharing

Im also a convert to the DCT, actually road my AT yesterday for the first time. Have to say it put a huge smile on my face. Although, I was reaching for the clutch a few times going into a stop. Glad that the parking brake lever is such a reach that i couldnt grab it. I will have to take time and learn all the functions and various screens on this bike... All in all i do love it, and cant wait to add new accessories to it.
Hope to see more of your content, thanks.

I love the DCT! I'm taking a 3-day seminar from Bret Tkacs this spring. Hope to improve my skills on the bigger bike.

I had the manual crosstourer 1200x and changed to a Dct model 1200x crosstourer and it’s absolutely amazing.

The technology is amazing. With more time on the bike, there's a few scenarios where the DCT isn't the best but that's probably more of a practice/learning thing for me. I still love it. Thanks for watching!

I knew you would do a DCT review justice. Your prospective as "an average rider/owner" was exactly what I was looking for 👍 While I'm saving my toy $ maybe you can review the electronic suspension for the average guy so I know to save a few thousand more?

Thanks! We did a ride (my latest video) this weekend - went up the steepest, most challenging terrain I've ever done. DCT did amazing. I simply opened up the throttle and didn't think about it again. Crazy good technology. I'll see what I can do on the suspension.

For me, riding is riding, no matter how I change my gears to ride my bike. Automatic or Manual it's all about the feeling of freedom from riding on any motorcycle to me. I recently test rode the H-Rebel 1100 with DCT and I must say I loved it. It's like plug n' play. Hop on, twist the throttle and Goooooooooooooooo. I could care less about shifting manually. I can take it or leave it and either way I am still confident of my "manhood".

Partner and I have been riding DCT (Twin) and won't buy any other bike. We were hoping TransAlp to have DCT but Honda fluked it - we'll wait until they reconsider :) We absolutely NEED DCT - it's not optional.

I'm doing a training class with Bret Tkacs this spring. It'll be interesting to see how the DCT does in that environment with all the manual clutch bikes :) Thanks for watching!

Thanks so much for sharing this. I've always dreamt of riding but I know I will be lousy with shifting so I didn't entertain the idea having a motorbike. I'd use it more off road anyways coz I don't like highway riding unless it's necessary... stay safe and be well ☮️

Like many of those commenting, never ever ever thought I would even consider let alone buy a DCT. I was waiting and waiting for the T7. And tired of waiting bought them 2022 Africa Twin AS DCT. I love love it. It is amazing - best bike ever - will also stay away from mechanics 🧰. Very reliable Honda. Awesome bike dirt and tarmac. Greetings from Durango Mexico 🇲🇽

I have an NC750X DCT.Its a great bike and DCT is definitely the way to go.I really believe that it makes you a better rider with more time to concentrate on your road management and to look out for clowns in motor cars. Not to mention more time to enjoy the joy of motorcycle riding.😂

The use of the hand break in extreme cold conditions , where it might freeze overnight would be of concern to me. I've had the emergency brake freeze during winter in Montana. I don't see any difference.....maybe I'm wrong but.....

Park it on flat ground and don't apply it if freezing temps are concerning. DCT rocks! And I have a Z06 and Boss 302 :-)
