Twister is Awesome! - Talking About Tapes

- Since Twister is celebrating its 25th anniversary, Tony and Newt decided to revisit it. In this Podcast / Movie Review they will talk about all the things that make it awesome. From the ground breaking special effects, the non stop action sequences, and the memorable performances by the late Bill Paxton and Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
During the approach of the most powerful storm in decades, university professor Dr. Jo Harding (Helen Hunt) and an underfunded team of students prepare the prototype for Dorothy, a ground-breaking tornado data-gathering device conceived by her estranged husband, Bill (Bill Paxton). When Harding tells Bill that Dorothy is ready for testing -- and that their privately funded rival Dr. Jonas Miller (Cary Elwes) has stolen the idea and built his own -- Bill rejoins the team for one last mission.

Hi again newt and hi Tony, do you know Tony you have never chatted to me yet, I've talked to newt and Crystal but not you yet, anyway I'm from the UK and go to conventions every year that we don't have covid stuffing life up and I would love to meet you guys at a convention and I know Tony says he bleeds red, white and blue and lucky for the UK they are our colours as well so you can come any time, you can even bunk in our spare room and we have a game of twister
*Hear
Fun fact, you mentioned that it would be hilarious if a tornado hit a theater playing Twister. That actually happened in Canada (of all places) the week this movie came out. A tornado hit a theater playing Twister.
Please do Fido. Not the best Zambie movie, also not the worst.
The drive in scene always got me because my local drive in actually got hit by a tornado the weekend it was showing Twister. Then a few months later when they actually rebuilt the drive in, the first movie they showed was Twister
Tony: *literally says anything...
Newt: "That reminds me of the time I was working at my movie theatre and I was a total badass and I saved the day and everyone thought I was so cool"
Then they hung out in the kiddie pool on the roof....in Speedos.
@@scottp.548 Was that from the movie Accepted or what was that from?
this is a truth
And that is why I tune in
He always reminds me of the guy who one ups everyone and it's like dude you ain't got to try so hard lol they already like you.
RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman what an amazing actor also Bill Paxton. Wish Hoffman was the Penguin in the Dark Knight DC Universe
PSH would've made a great Penguin.
RIP.
Truly, and RIP his balls.
Boogie Nights PSH ruled!
He died the way he lived.
High as a kite.
It's crazy newt was never on rental reviews. Glad he's a regular on this show.
was supposed to do 2 episodes then it got canceled
They definitely missed out by not having him on
Good things come to those that wait.
It's because Newt died after Aliens
I'd say his humour is a bit edgier than James likes to put out.
My aunt used to think it was hilarious to make me and my cousins watch the original IT as kids.
If you read Michael Crichton novels than you know his views on death. He often ends a characters internal narrative by saying something along the lines of,
"And then there was darkness." or "Then he thought nothing."
Can you imagine how terrifying it was for him to face his oncoming death as a brain tumor grew inside his skull.
And yet he never stopped writing.
I cant wait this this show actually gets popular and i can come back here and say stuff like
"I miss when they were this good"
"Show just isnt what it once was"
"They let fame get to them"
“they really let themselves go.”
“I can’t believe they’re back in rehab… for sex addiction… with each other!”
I miss the good old days
Well now newt is gone. Show still great don’t get me wrong I just miss newt
My local drive-in played Twister for the 25th anniversary, there were 4 tornadoes to the south that day. The drive-in posts on Facebook "Sorry, our bad."
My mom was also a storm tracker for ESDA when my brother and I were growing up, so instead of leaving us at home when they needed spotters out she would take us with her, sit and wait and keep an eye out for rotations. Seen several funnels but never a full touchdown.
Fun fact: Twister was one of the first movies to be released on DVDs.
The reason my dad bought a dvd player
For some reason, I always picture Tony with a chef hat on. He would look really good with one and also seems like the type that would enjoy cooking. Lol
The boys are back.
I live in Kansas City, Kansas. I saw this movie opening weekend with my older sister, with a packed theatre. (I think I'd just turned 20.). When that part at the end, where Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton lashed themselves to the pipe? The entire theatre exploded into laughter. Even more so when they came out of an F5 almost injury free. That's the one clear memory I have of seeing this with an audience. There were a few other parts with the tornadoes that made us laugh, but that was part? 🤣🤣
No going to lie, I’m marking out at the Mr. Metokur shirt.
Talkin ta ta talkin bout tapez!!
As an Oklahoman, I’ve always held this one near and dear. But also it’s just a great film. I’m still living in OKC and these tornados ain’t no joke.
While Tony and Newt are inside the store, Crystal and Justin are driving in their pickup truck while trying to put the weather tracker GANGAR 1 into a passing tornado.
The rental store is in the "eye" of the storm & Justin and Crystal are trying to get in.
Meanwhile the McPoyle’s are considered a Jersey expansion
@@moosedawgatlantaproductions I always thought the Mcpoyles should get a spin off.
Also, Crystal should be wearing a skirt in this hypothetical tornado bit.
RIP Bill Paxton!
I saw this movie when I was four, and it terrified me, more so than any slasher movie like Halloween or Friday the 13th. I also lived in Kansas, and had a crippling phobia of strong thunderstorms until I was like 11 years old lol.
My favourite scene in the movie is the drive in scene. The tornado is like a damn ninja just hanging out behind the movie screen 😂
I remember going to see THE CRAFT on the opening weekend of TWISTER. It was hard watching it with the THX hurricane sounds woofing through the walls.
We mention the issue theaters had in the video
Loving this series Tony. I'm sad it took me this long to find about Hack. Ive been binging the catalog and must say... Way better than Rental Review
Twister is a fun movie.
There's lots of cool destruction and things go splodey! 🌪💥
"I got to go, Julia. We have cows."
"Another cow!"
"Actually, I think that's the same one."
😄
Reviewing an absolute classic! Let's go!
25 anniversary showing of Twister tonight on AMC @ 8:30
Huh 25 years, it sure time flies by. F for bill Paxton’s.
"I would notice Jake Busy in a movie"
Me too Newt, Me too.
Really digging that shirt Newt! Also this and Powder were my Dad's favorite movies ever. RIP Pops.
85? Dad loved both movies as well for some reason
Just leaving a friendly reminder to search Alien 3, folks! Keep up the good work Tony!
Why???? Someone please explain this. Just review the damn movie!!! Aaaaaaaaa
45:35 got me laughing so hard 🤣
Tony's jokes are always best when the bit becomes real by the end. Like how his bit about which Crash Newt meant turned into him actually being confused about which Crash Newt Meant. GOLDEN.
Guys, excellent commentary! I’m a SPFX technician and y’all had me laughing my ass off!
Defuntland is underrated! Love that channel, very interesting stuff.
@j s that sucks dude.
I'm not sure what was said but that's not cool.
Sorry
The only tornado I've ever seen in my life (I've lived in Oklahoma all 45 years of my life) was an F5...In 2013 I was working at JCPenney off of 19th street in Moore, OK, and we stood outside and watched as the tornado was moving east, directly toward us. It was the most eerie thing I've ever seen in my entire life. The aftermath was awesome in the most literal sense of the word. Entire neighborhoods were completely demolished. Businesses that were there earlier that day were nonexistent.
Before I saw the tornado these huge chunks of ice were falling from the sky. It wasn't like hail, it was single chunks of ice bigger than a soccer ball would hit the ground with a thud. One here, one over there...It was bizarre AF.
Funny story...As we all stood outside JCPenney staring at this gigantic mile-wide F5 tornado heading straight toward us, this guy pulls up in his car and walks up to us and literally says, "Hey, I need to pay my credit card bill. Can I do that real quick?". He went in, paid his bill and then walked back out to his car and drove away...He didn't speed away. He was in absolutely no hurry. I really don't think he was aware there was a tornado right there.
I was born in 93 and my first movie well least one I remember was seeing twister at a drive in here in Charleston WV in the back of a station wagon with the wood trim on the sides with my family and it was a windy dark night too lol. It's a fond 90s memory I have. The drive in was super loud too. I've always loved this movie cause its good and it was my first and a drive in before they died off. Kinda makes me an official 90s baby too lol
I grew up in Tornado Alley and was freakin obsessed with this movie as a kid
Newt brought me back to my living in NYC days mentioning Ground Round, I used to eat there all the time. Also the movie at the Drive-In on Twister The Ride was The People Under the Stairs. I would love to win that Twister Game !!!!
I found it interesting how they were able to take Helen Hunt's character and have a real life event(1970s Tornado outbreaks) be the motivation for why she hunts tornadoes in a very similar manner that Quint's charachter from Jaws was also motivated by a real life event(sinking of the USS Indianapolis) that makes you understand why he hunts sharks
The FEMA video clip at the end 😂 nice touch! Lol OMG. This has been one of my fave movie reviews of all time! Keep them coming guys!
Twister always has had a special place in my heart…
i was thinking about Dante's Peak while watching this "talking about tapes" i think because it came out in the mid 90s like twister. do a Dante's Peak "talking about tapes" because it a solid movie.
After all these episodes with Newt, him saying he faked his own death in high school is not at all surprising.
1:19:24 Took the words right outta my mouth Tony
5:30 Spielberg introduced himself to Bill Paxton by saying this - a year and a half after the movie was released. Cheers!
Twister.. yeah. RIP Eddie Van Halen.
Edited - Crash - From 1973's J.G. Ballard novel.
Happy 27th anniversary of this wonderful movie
Rip Bill Paxton
Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Michael Crichton
Eddie Van Halen
Warner Bros. & 20th Century Fox teamed up to make The Towering Inferno, which actually got mentioned but not for that reason, as I was typing this.
Garth did Chris Gaines for the soundtrack/Greatest Hits album for the Paramount movie The Lamb that never got made and Philip Seymour Hoffmann played Dusty. But, GB did appear on an episode of Mad About You so full circle lol!🤪🤘
28:45 Newt: “Who’s the other Tara Reade?”
Tony: “The media doesn’t want you to know!”
The Media: “Believe all women? Nah!”
Phillip Seymour Hoffman actually played Dustin or “Dusty” in the movie and Bill Paxton ironically enough played Billy
I remember seeing this movie at my rich aunt's house after my uncle bought one of the early 5.1 surround sound setups. I'm pretty sure this movie was funded specifically to sell those systems.
@H.E Pennypacker unfortunately no. She works for big pharma lol
So, when this movie came out, my home town theater, college cinema, in enterprise alabama DID get hit by a tornado while twister was playing. no one was hurt, but I'd did rip the marquee off the side of the building
yikes
The great thing about this movie is that I get an amazing 2 hour nap when I watch it!
Newt start your own show with all your stories. Your famous now. The world is your wet oyster. Good show guys. I give it two 1/2 of thumbs up. So 1 thumb ...the left 1.
I don’t even need to watch this to know that Twister is still awesome, but I will.
Newt keeps quoting Poltergeist. You guys should do Poltergeist. It's the movie that got me into horror. I saw that movie when I was Carol Anne's age and told all my preschool friends about it and then my grandma let me take our vhs copy to said preschool when I told her my friends wanted to see it. Naturally the teachers didn't let us watch it but it's one of my first memories. I still have the vhs with my name written on it in her handwriting. Anyways all that to say you guys should do Poltergeist please.
At least 12 people agree with me 😜
I’m taking credit for Newt’s Killer Klown shirt due to my thinking the tent from the fumigation was the kkfos tent
I saw this and the nutty professor in the same night at the local Drive in Theatre. A few months later the drive in theatre closed forever. it was the only one in my city and i will never experience that again. :(
Funny you bring up the nutty professor. Legit burnt through a copy of Twister and Nutty Professor on VHS as a kid!
I only heard the NAME "Sharkula" and I'm already down for it.
46:00 definitely include Shrunken Heads for Tubi Tuesdays. You can find it in the Full Moon section, but it also just got a remastered release on Blu-ray. One of the most bizarre films I've ever seen because of how it treats the premise seriously and with sincerity.
Soo when is alien 3 review coming?
maybe at 50k subs. something special
Y'all know the movie takes place in multiple towns throughout central Oklahoma, right? Right? No? Ok. Just checking. Having lived in Oklahoma for 6 years, that many tornados in a day during tornado season is not uncommon. In May of 1999, there were 105 tornados recorded in Oklahoma. So this movie could have increased the tornado count and still would have been "realistic."
They should put FEMA PSAs at the end of all disaster movies. Yes, all..of..them. I want a grainy 90s looking video of a guy in a really bad suit telling me with a completely dead straight face what I should do if I find myself experiencing an an actual Kaiju attack at the end of the next Godzilla movie.
10:10 sound designers have occasionally used animal sounds to add a little bit of texture or flavor to otherwise repetitive sounds. Foley Artists love to mix things up and find creative ways to use otherwise useless sounds that they’ve recorded.
Star Wars Sound Designer Ben Burtt sometimes used lion roars in the fly-by sound of the Millennium Falcon and X-wing fighters, and the main component of the TIE Fighter Howl was a Low-pitched Elephant Roar.
What a lot of people don't talk about or realize in this movie is the fact that every tornado they chase is the next size up on the Fugita scale. First tornado is an F1, twin waterspouts are F2s, third tornado out on the two-way highway was an F3, drive-in movie theater tornado was an F4, and the final one that they battle against is an F5. Of course this wouldn't happen in real life and let alone in one day but for the sake of Hollywood action and tornado science, they wanted to feature the wrath and brutality of each tornado on the Fugita scale in chronological order.
I just now realized... Helen Hunt's whole motivation is her dad died in a tornado, so she wants to bump warning systems up to 15 minutes so that doesn't happen to anybody else... but her dad *didn't* die because they didn't make it to the storm cellar in time, he died because he went and grabbed the door like an idiot and got sucked out. They could've had all the warning time in the world and it wouldn't have made a difference.
13:19 Phillip Seymour Hoffman was Dustin Davis .....
Y’all talked about the 2011 super outbreak, that hit my county here in Alabama bad and a tornado hit my school while we were in it. I was a freshman at the time and luckily the school was ok but the windows were busted out, part of the roof was collapsed, the soccer field press box was destroyed, cars were flipped over and the house across the street was completely gone, it was a farm house. It was chaotic and surreal but kinda thrilling. Power was out at my house for 2 weeks tho
God Bless Newt
That signed Twister has a place of honor on my shelf.
Helen Hunt was 1 of my 1st celeb crushes, so was Kirstie Alley from "Cheers" (now Tony is my only crush...JK )
You better not play with Tony from Hack the Movies feelings like that, he won't take it too well.
This has to be one of my favorite movie 🎥🤩😎👍👍👍🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿
Bill Paxton was in Aliens and this came out after that so I guess it’s the closest we’re going to get to an Alien 3 review for now.
The fact that Jonas was the bad guy because he was sponsored by Corporations a recurring theme in Michael Crichton’s Work.
In the Jurassic Park novel John Hammond created the park solely for profit and screwed over Dennis Nedry in his contract.

That Rochelle, Rochelle box had me rolling.
I first saw Twister at a drive-in.
Dude from Twister: Erik LaRay Harvey
Dude from Crow: Laurence Mason
Love the show!

Was just at the Mahoning drive-in for the wild world of David Lynch. Great place.
I'm so mad I missed that

Broke my tooth on a popcorn kernel during the premier. Got laid that night though, so...love this movie! 😃

Can you guys please do Stephen King's The Night Flier. I think it's a really under-appreciated adaptation of one of his short stories. Let's get a push for everyone to CZcams search The Night Flier. You guys are awesome keep doing what your doing.
I was a huge fan on Stephen Kings movie/TV adaptations as a kid. I somehow never heard of that one until I saw In Praise of Shawdows video on it like three days ago. Sad I missed out on it cuz I def would've loved it as a kid.
Did Newt just say he slashed his hairline open, taped it up and went back to work? Newt’s badass. Keep the brutal stories coming.

This was my favorite movie when I was 10 years old. It's pure 90s cheese, I love it!
In Kansas and Oklahoma we have days where it's just like this movie. You have tornado warning after tornado warning. We are actually close to that time of year where tornado storms happen a lot. Kansas and Oklahoma are the best places to live or be if you want to experience one.
How do you keep the cows safe?

I love these guys. Sometimes while I'm watching this show I pick one of them to hate and see if the other one can sway me to hating them instead. It's a fun game you should try it sometime!
Newts frequent obnoxious laughter usually sways me over to Tony.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman is Dustin ''Dusty'' Davis and Bill Paxton is Bill Harding. Newt, much respect to/for you, I had cancer last year. Wizard of Oz is MGM
I swear the Twister / Battleship conversation has happened before... Wicked bad deja vu
Totally isn’t the guy from The Crow. The actor in The Crow who played Tin Tin was Laurence Mason, and this is Erik LaRay Harvey. Love you guys! Just wanted to clarify haha!
