Director's cuts, Extended Cuts, or Special editions are sometime the best way to view a movie. It allows you to see the story they way they wanted it told before they compromised. Most times they're great. In the case of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial 20th anniversary edition an alternate cut can completely damage and ruin a movie. We talk about this famous disaster then bring up other director's or extended cuts that we think result in inferior films.
Happy 40th Anniversary to E.T. by the way!
Special thanks to @MovieDumpster for doing this video with me.

TELL HIM that there is a way of looking at "Keys" the agent as Elliot's father, I think it was done intentionally to give it another way of viewing. You notice certain things like that in this movie after repeated viewing. I grew up with this movie along with my family and friends
I will say Night of the Living Dead 30th Anniversary Edition was awful. John Russo added scenes of random zombies filmed in 1997, and unnecessary side plots.Thankfully, Tony's cut is better.
Facts, that version sucks. I don't know why they thought that was a good idea.
That would be the cut I choose also. Nothing in the beginning matches at all, the actor playing the zombies is years older, color grading is off and why do we need his backstory anyway? Lol.
I watched that version on Showtime once. It was GOD AWFUL. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?
@@Beavis-ej3ny it's because they accidentally released the original film with no copyright so they made no money from it, when they did the awful newer version with extra scenes that had a copyright - essentially it was just to try and make easy money
@@Beavis-ej3ny huh
The ET ride is still in Florida because Spielberg got mad that they removed it from both Japan and Hollywood and threaten to end his association with Universal if they removed the Florida one.
Good! It's an amazing ride, glad to hear it's still around.
@@MovieDumpster I remember going on in a few times as a kid in Hollywood before it was replaced by Revenge of the Mummy which I also enjoy but I know that the one in Florida is apparently better even if I've never been to the Florida Parks yet.
@@DANIELDUDE1000 Oh it's great! Haven't been there in a few years but Florida has the Mummy ride too in a different location and it's awesome.
The warriors movie directors cut literally changed the movies feel and pacing, and he added like cartoon to fill out parts he had wanted to film for the original. It really ruined the movie
Agreed.the whole 300 spartan reference was terrible
i agree!! i’m glad i have the original version on bluray
@@cinematicsterling6897 did you find it online or something? I thought the original cut was only available on old DVD releases
@@hoodedmullet8194 It's a European release, it pops up on DiabolikDVD sometimes but sells out fast.
Ouch
My mom asked the attendant on the ET ride if you had to know how to ride a bike 😂 She was convinced we would just be biking around a set or something hahaha
And she's allowed to raise children?
The Donnie Darko Director's Cut comes to mind. It tries to explain what's going on in the movie but all it really does is muddy everything up and ruins the ambiguity of the theatrical cut. The original dvd release had a commentary track with the director and Kevin Smith and at some point the director tells Smith what's really going on, mentioning a time traveling race that are intervening and whatnot and Smith basically just tells him that he wish he hadn't told him that.
I prefer the director's cut. I'm okay with the explanation of time travel, also the soundtrack is better.
Little did we know the director's cut would later reveal Richard Kelly's true lack of restraint as a filmmaker. Especially Southland Takes and to a lesser extent The Box.
It was annoying because it added in great scenes and much needed scenes that were cut, but also made changes that were pretty terrible.
I prefer the director’s cut for the added character moments
we definitely need a _Best_ Directors' Cuts episode just so you three can duel to the death over who gets to bring in the Final Cut of _Blade Runner_
Any post with Joe Pilato on is a win.
Okay, the walkie-talkie gag actually made me laugh out loud 👍
SEX DRIVE had the BEST director's cut ever. They just green screened naked people everywhere, and completely out of context. brilliant idea
You know what’s not the worst directors cut? Barb Wire. It’s the superior way to watch that film.
Wait that actually got a DC? I honestly liked that movie and really wanted a DC despite knowing that no it didn't mean more Pam boobs. I loved the comics like Tank Girl and thought with more time the film could do it some justice.
It’s actually an “unrated version” and it’s the exact same as the original release except at the very beginning of the movie Pam does a strip tease for like five minutes while being hosed with water.
@@ZMsoloman5000 I did like that.
It's like the movie said "ok I know why you're here. Let's get it out of the way. Ok done. Now for the movie" lol
@@ZMsoloman5000 oh and what's that song called?
Want to mod it into Left 4 Dead 2 for the credits;)
Um cool thanks
The directors cut of The Warriors is worthy of a mention. Almost ruined a classic with unnecessary edits!
How do you feel about the animated interludes...feels weird yes?
@@alexanderkantakusiniii8411 think that's what he means. I can't recall any other changes.
@@nemesislygr8960 I think there was like some added narration by walter hill in the beginning as well
@@alexanderkantakusiniii8411 I remember that intro, but just thought that was just like other directors when they do their DC like Scott on Kingdom of Heaven.
Read that on a lot of people's lists but have only see the original cut, so I didn't bring it up. Sounds horrendous! -Sean
Payback (Straight Up) has to be one of the worst directors cut ever
The theatrical US release of 'Dawn Of The Dead' was actually Romero's director's cut.
That godawful extended cut of Halloween that was made for network television, with extra scenes shot during the filming of Halloween II. They bring the film to a crawl just so they could edit the R rated scenes while still padding out a 2 hour run time.
I tried to avoid TV cuts because the filmmakers werent really involved with them. That cut sucks though.
@@HackTheMovies tv cuts sucks an edited horror movie makes even less sense than a censred rap song hehehe
Thank you for giving the Forgetting Sarah Marshall extended cut the respect it deserves, such a good complete movie
It's one of my favorites, the extended actually adds a lot of good jokes. Gotta dig out my DVD copy, great commentary track on it too! -Sean
ET has one of the greatest endings of all time. Gets me every time.
I have no idea how any producer could watch Terry Gilliam's original cut of Brazil and then go "yeah, change the ending". That is some next level head fuckery right there.
I remember the ET ride when i was like 12 at Universal Studios! he actually said my sister's name Marquita right at the end!
It falls in the studio cut category but I can't think of anything worse than the hour shorter and edited linearly version of Once Upon A Time In America.
I was just thinking of that, it's the worst studio cut I've ever seen. Butchers the film and takes out so much important stuff
I was literally just trying to find the title of "the Quest" a week ago. I kept thinking it was called "the monster" or "the beast" or "the creature"...I was WAY off. All I really remember from the movie is there's a monster in a pond that keeps coming up out of the water and the kids are scared of it...but then at the end it's revealed it's like a crane with seaweed and crap all over it that was submerged, and it would come up out of the water controlled by some jerk.
I gotta think the Special Editions of A New Hope and Return of the Jedi are on this list.
Not really director cuts
Well new hope would count but not jedib
@@HackTheMovies I mean I could see either way but those don’t really seem like directors cuts to me. Especially if it’s something added in years later to enhance it. Now you got me questioning ET but I haven’t seen the directors cut of it
@@titsonaboar5654 They're not Director's Cuts because Lucas didn't direct them.
@@HackTheMovies that dance and song scene
I'd like to mention a GOOD directors cut... Little Shop of Horrors!👍
YES! The ending of the director's cut is awesome!!
AGREED! And the reason is simple, the director's cut ending is also the stage musical ending. IOW, it was the ORIGINAL ENDING! As always, it was the studio that wanted the "happy ending".
@@trekadam30Didn't a poor test audience score have something to do with it also? I remember seeing leaked unedited footage of the original ending years ago on CZcams and was happy when the director FINALLY agreed to release the Blu-ray with the original ending.
@@beejay271 I'm not aware of that & as I heard it, the director put $2 million of his own money up, so he could finally finish filming the original ending & put it on the anniversary DVD.
I don't think I've ever seen the director's cut of E.T.
Also...
Awesome shirt Sean!
Great editing job Jessica! That walkie talkie looked real. 😉
All this ET talk got me wanting a Flight Of The Navigator review!!
Note to famous Tony: Joe and Clayton are the greatest guests.
Donnie Darko Directors cut adds static text between the scenes that over-explains how time travel works and ruins the pace.
@Movie Dumpster I’m with you Joe, Explorers was one of my favorite movies as a kid. Very underrated
It's great!
The gun thing in ET is only because Drew Barrymore asked Spielberg to take the guns out.
The Shining Remaster/Cut. Adds scenes that ruin the pacing, and add literally nothing to the movie. No one needed Shining itself to be explained further, mysteries are cool sometimes.
I've never heard of a recut for the film, unless you are referring to the European cut done by Stanley that removed many scenes to quicken the pace and add more mystery. Or are you getting it mixed up with the 1997 adaptation that is closer to the book?
@@ZootWorld1 That's probably because it isn't called a directors cut. It was released in 2019 along side Doctor Sleep. Its just The Shining with deleted scenes added as far as I know, with the intent of making Doctor Sleep make more sense.
What cut are you referring to where can I see it
@@CondorCalabasas Could you give me a link that has more detail about that cut then? Because I believe you are getting Kubrick's US cut mixed up as some sort of new extended cut. Kubrick considered both the US and cut-down European version as his definitive director's cuts. Also, the only deleted scene discovered in recent years, (a simple shot of Wendy carrying Danny), was up for auction, and is now in a private collection.
@@ZootWorld1 I'm not sure what you want me to link. It's easily searchable. It's the version of The Shining that comes in a 2 film collection along with Doctor Sleep. The Shining that you get in that collection is the only version available in a lot of store fronts.
The Apocalypse Now theatrical cut is absolutely the ONLY way to go but for some reason this isn't Star Wars-level universally understood. The offenses aren't equal, but the sentiment is the same.
I despise the director's cuts of "Dumb & Dumber", and "Kingpin". Both made the lead characters much more unlikable than they were in the theatrical cuts, destroying any charm or "heart" in them. This problem actually manifested itself in "Dumb And Dumber To", where Harry and Lloyd are unlikable jerks just as they were in the director's cut of the original.
Which makes me think the Farrelly Brothers 90's success was perhaps due to executive meddling with their edits, to make their characters more likable.
Dumb & Dumber alternate cut is darker for sure (Jim Carrey's character is scary, a realistic portrayal of a stalker. The full extent of Seabass's intentions during the gas station bathroom scene). To your point, I think Roger Ebert called Me, Myself & Irene, another Farelly Brothers film, mean-spirited.
Those weren't really director's cuts though, just extended cuts adding in scenes that were purposefully left on the cutting room floor because unrated cuts were all the rage in the early to mid 2000's.
The Director's Cut of Donnie Darko (2001) was completely pointless. Not terrible, but pointless.
For me, the story makes more sense in the director's cut.
Donnie darko hands down worst director cut I've ever seen
I did not know their was one
Why
Sean looks like Stephen Mcdaniel the guy who killed his neighbor and found out they found her body near his house during interview on the news
Lmao!!! Yessss! Watch True Crime Losers CZcams video on that interrogation. It's hilarious!!
Oh geez, can't say I agree but it wouldn't be the first time someone has likened me to a murderer lmao! -Sean
ohh good topic
Thought it be more fun then a straight up ET review
Dumb and Dumber, they added and extended scenes that made the movie cringeworthy and much less funny
I should have included that. I totally forgot.
I think he mentioned that Rental Reviews
@@HackTheMovies could do a Director’s cut of this episode
33:23 It might Still be on youtube for free , dunno , but there is a 3 hour or so Version of Dawn Of The Dead That Mixes The German Version , Directors Cut and Theatrical Version all togetherish.
I'm really tempted to make a Sin City where it's all well lit, and uses bright colors as a play on the joke of real life "sin city" Las Vegas trying to become more family friendly.
The best Statham movies are Lock Stock and Snatch
The only significant change at the end of Watchmen is changing the scapegoat for the New York attack to Dr. Manhattan instead of that stupid squid alien creature from the graphic novel. It's more streamlined and makes a lot more sense.
So much was wrong with that brazil section i cant even..... the love conquers all version WAS the theatrical studio edit. the version we have now with the downer ending IS the directors cut. Gilliam famously took a full page spread in a newspaper asking them to release the version he shot. while it was still in theatres
The one thing I'll give the director's cut/special edition of _E.T._ is that at least you can still get the original unalterred version. And I could be wrong, but I think they even included both versions with the DVD. So it can at least be viewed more as an alternate cut/experiment.
Recently bought the 4k blu ray for ET and it only came with the original puppet version. I think the 20th anniversary one is gone now. Not sure how you can get it.
‘Payback’! Gibson’s version is a lot tighter and better then the directors cut.
Ahh the "Straight up" version.
At least the dog lived in his version
I can’t believe your friends thought Cosby was in “Jack”.
Uh, he totally is in it. He plays Robin Williams' tutor Lawrence Woodruff.
The Rogue Cut of Days of Future Past. Messes with the pacing and in certain parts, like the part after Xavier talks to Raven at the airport and they can't figure out where she's going in this cut, makes the characters look dumb.
I felt DOFP was one the the best paced Marvel movies ever. You are correct. That the pacing is off and some scenes are unnecessary. The extra future scenes are cool enough to see, but not enough to re-edit.
the ET flying scene was filmed a few minutes from me and those big nice trees are still there , and one of the buildings have an ET mural now . street is called White Oak ave
"I like Terry Gilliam movies", said the man who's never seen, or even heard of Brazil before... ya know, Terry Gilliam's best film by a country mile. SMDH
The Troy directors cut has scenes that go on too long that makes the movie drag. Francis Ford Copolla also did a new version of The Outsiders, he added a new scene which was good, but changed all the score to rock music that the characters would have listened to, it takes away from the emotion and makes it play like a Disney movie. The guy on the left is so annoying with his high pitch squeals, I need to keep turning the volume down.
Rob zombies' Halloween 1 and 2 THE WORST!
1: added "pointless" rape scene
2: Michael Myers talks! DIIIIE
Both are good and none of it’s pointless
Want some candy LoL
I would love to see a full restoration and extended director's cut of "David Lynch's Dune". That's a movie which needs to be fixed from top to bottom. There's good stuff there, it just needs better execution.
We mentioned in our dune episode there's a really good fan restoration
@@HackTheMovies There was a recent interview from David Lynch and he seemed somewhat interested in returning to the film. I'm not getting my hopes up, but if HBO Max could fund it that would be amazing. I'll be sure to look out for that fan edit. Thanks.
@@Dohsoda it's on CZcams. CZcams can find it easily! Let me know what you think

I wanted to love Sucker Punch, but I just can't. Still have the DVD though.

The Only Version Of 1984's Once Upon A Time In America That I Prefer Is The Restored Original Extended Uncut Director's Cut (269 Mins).
The teacher in the frog scene's voice was re-dubbed as Harrison Ford though
Not the worst, but Spider-Man 2.1 is a worse version of an almost perfect movie. The editing and even some visual effects look worse, the pacing is ruined, and the comedic scenes are made far less funny.
On the flipside the Editor's Cut of Spider-Man 3 did make it into a slighty better movie!
@@Dartanyoogles is that possible? Lol
@@sgtsnokeem1139 Yes, it does 100 percent improve the film. They cut some scenes, put in some new scenes, and added in the entirety of the original score. There is a new scene with Sandman and his daughter that never should have been cut.
Don't think Raimi actually signed off on it, otherwise that would have been my first pick. It adds barely anything worth seeing, like what was even the point?? -Sean
@@MovieDumpster The movie is drastically re-edited and besides the few new additional scenes, some bad scenes were taken out and replaced with alternate versions, which completely change character motivations. Also, Christopher Young's entire composed score is used which gives the movie a darker tone. It's not a completely different movie by any means, but it's a slightly improved cut that is my preferred version of the movie.

Rob zombie Halloween director's cut was terrible. The theatrical cut was paced much better, and left out a very problematic escape scene...
The movie was terrible. The directors cut just added more terrible
There’s nothing problematic about it
Payback Straight Up Director’s Cut is the worst DC ever. They cut out half the movie, replace the main bad guy with some random woman’s voice who never appears. And it’s almost 20 minutes shorter.

What is everyone's opinion of the Richard Donner cut of Superman II? It's kind of a weird one, and it makes me wonder if Superman 1 was supposed to end with him flying around the earth to reverse time since he does it again at the end of Donner's version of Superman II. I don't know a whole lot about the ins and outs of the production of the movies, but I do know he was filming them at the same time, but was fired after shooting a pretty decent percentage of the sequel.
The ET ride is still at Universal Orlando.
Gonna have to get down there then, it's amazing!
I saw the director's cut of E.T. first, so I never had a problem with it. I saw the original version years later and it didn't really impact my viewing experience. The story and characters are what matters. I feel the same way about the director's cuts of Star Wars IV-VI. The changes never really bothered me.
I remember hearing that "Mallrats was bad" even from Kevin Smith, but we loved it. Yeah its not high art, but its the perfect stupid 90s movie that you can just sit down and watch and have a great time. This may be colored by my personal bias as my friends and I watched it right when it came out on video and we were 13. I remember it was one of those movies you had to see - "Clerks" of course is another one, and along with the big one which was "Kids".
Thats a movie Id love to see reviewed, I know Tony is a bit younger than me (too bad about "He that shall not be named," cuz hes almost my same age and Id find it hard to believe he wouldnt of seen it) but hes watched stuff thats older, so yeah - review Kids, dammit!!!!
