Push Reel Mower, How to Mow Long Grass: High Mowing Height, Dry Grass, Three Passes

  • In this video, I show you how I mow long grass with my push reel mower. I set the cutting height as tall as possible to achieve a good ratio of clippings to grass. I mow when the lawn fairly dry and not wet. I will then pass over the lawn three times.
    If you are interested in this mower, here is a link to the mower on Amazon:
    amzn.to/3pjyp0c
    Let me explain each of these steps in greater detail.
    1. Set the cutting height as tall as possible. This will allow your lawnmower to roll over the grass and the length of the clippings will be minimized allowing the clippings to fall on the ground and compost itself, without leading to thatch. You generally want to mow off one third off the length of a grass blade, not more. Since I have skipped mowing for two weeks, the clippings may be longer than that ratio.
    2. Mow the grass when it is dry. It is easier to mow the grass when it is dry with a push reel mower. With dry grass, the blades cut easier, the clippings fall without clumping and the wheels won’t slip.
    3. Use three passes on the lawn.
    a. For the first pass, choose one direction to mow in and go back and forth in that direction. Let’s call that direction 0 degrees (I chose diagonally), This is the first cut of the long grass, so it will be the most difficult. The thick grass may slow you down, and make it harder to push. Also, the grass clippings will pile up on your cutting bed and you will need to bend over and pick up those clippings and spread them over the lawn.
    b. For the second pass, you will choose a direction that is perpendicular to the first pass, with the wheel marks forming an X with the first pass. The second pass will be cutting both grass and grass clippings left from the first pass.
    c. For the third pass choose a direction that is 45 degrees off of the first or second pass. My usually weekly mowings only require two passes, but since the grass was so long to start off, the extra third pass will keep it neater.
    You may think that my lawn is still long after my mowing, which is true. However, I believe that there are many benefits to keeping your cutting height high: 1) more photosynthesis for healthier grass plants, 2) thicker roots to reach more water, 3) shading for the soil below to keep it moist, 4) thick lawn that will drown out weeds, 5, less need for water, fertilizer and herbicide.
    Please consider using a push reel-it is quiet, no gasoline or fumes, low maintenance, and helps you burn calories.
    Do you have any tips on cutting long grass with a push reel mower? Please share them in the comments. This video is part of my organic lawncare playlist which you may enjoy. I hope you consider using a push reel at home and also consider hitting the like or subscribe button.

    This is one of the best inventions ever you ever been outside in your yard and you just want to chill out on a nice hot summer day and all of a sudden you hear the neighbour started his lawn mower so much for a peaceful afternoon but with these push mowers it's less about noise pollution you get your exercise and it doesn't pollute the Earth the nice thing about cutting with the push mower the grass goes back into the lawn and acts as fertilizer.

    Val, A beautiful lawn. When I retired in 2011 I used a push reel for 6 years, worked great. Decided to add clove to the lawn. First year it was nice, second year the yard was excellent, third year I wound up with clover and weeds and hardly any grass.
    Convinced the wife that I have saved enough on gas (LOL) to purchase an new Honda mower. Had to spray the weeds and the clover dies.

I hope your lawn is beautiful too and that you are enjoying taking care of it! If you see a lot of weeds and too much clover, with no grass, I suggest to try to combat that by improving the pH with lime/compost or by overseeding with new grass seed. You can try using both these methods to help your lawn, whether you use a push reel or not. Check out my organic lawn playlist on my channel! Good luck to you Ernest.

      @vilramos  Před 2 lety

      Kim, sorry to hear that. How long is your grass in inches? Sometimes the grass can be too long that the mower just runs over them and leaves them uncut. You have to mow the lawn regularly and so that the grass does not get too tall. I usually mow my lawn once a week and if I wait two weeks it gets too long. If it is too long, try to cut the long grass with mower at highest setting and then go over two or three more times. I then pull out a few extra long strands by hand or with clippers. If it is not working at all perhaps grass is too long and you may need to cut with a gas mower? I hope this comment helps?

    Thanks for making this video!!! I found it much more helpful than any thing else out there, especially for a guy like me that it just trying to mow his lawn without making an art piece out of it.
    I just moved into a place where I am responsible for lawn care. Previously I lived on a seven acre hobby farm where the "lawn" was really just mowed permaculture. I loved the look of that vs. the typical fake-looking suburban Hank Hill style lawn. Very similar to what you have going with the clover. The lawn in our new place is similar, with lots of weeds and native plants (the previous tenant hadn't taken care of it for a very long time, maybe years) and I like your approach with keeping the grass longer to help it do its own thing. The landlord did mow right before we moved in (actually he did a huge amount of work, removing all kinds of overgrown shrubs and vines), but not owning a mower and the bustle of moving, having a newborn to take care of, etc., etc., the grass hasn't been mowed in almost a month. I'm picking up a push mower this weekend and am going to try your method!!

      Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoy the push mower and the height adjustment. It is a good idea to make sure the cuttings are short so they can decompose. I cut my grass short like that when I overseed. But generally, I keep the height adjustment high. In my opinion, there are benefits to long grass-more photosynthesis, shading the soil, crowding out weeds, deeper roots, less water. However, in this video, the grass is extra long because I skipped a regular mowing or two. Please check out my organic lawcare playlist, I have other videos there you may enjoy.

    Great tips, glad if you can help me out by answering some questions:
    - Did you plant the clovers yourself or did they come naturally. Also do they come back after winter?
    - Do you water the lawn, if so how often?
    - My reel mower leaves some uncut pieces behind like dandelion flowers? How do you deal with that?

    • @vilramos
      @vilramos  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for your questions. I include clover seed often when I overseed with grass, so most of that clover is intentional. They help add nitrogen to the lawn and supplement the grass. I love the way they look. They do come back after the winter. I don't water the lawn unless I overseeded recently-then I water it with a hose each day for two weeks. For dandelions, I try to hand pick them periodically and put them in the compost pile when they come out. However, I don't mind if there are weeds in my lawn-if there are a few weeds and my reel mower cuts then, I just leave them on the lawn. Please check out my other organic lawncare videos on my playlist.

    My recommendation... get a power mower. Not for your primary mower. I used a reel mower for a while, and if the yard went 2 weeks between mowings (due to work, weather, etc), the reel mower would never get some of the weeds that popped up. I had to go over it with a power mower. I'd keep the power mower empty of gas, and only use it two or three times a year when the reel mower just won't do the job. Your lawn looks very weed-free, so this may not apply to you, but it would apply to anyone who has weeds. Now I have WAY too much lawn to mow with one of these. I have a large riding mower, but I DO still love the cut you get with a reel mower. If I ever get my lawn in the shape I want it, I may switch to a gang reel setup.

I mow regularly, once every week or two, and this push reel mower works well for me. Do you need to mow all the grass short? Some people only mow a part of their lawn they want to use, and leave the rest tall like a meadow. It may be easier to maintain that way. I have other organic lawncare videos on a playlist.

      @vilramos  Před 4 lety +3

      Stephanie, in this video, I am cutting my grass/clover which is as tall as 5-6 inches and cutting it back to 3-4 inches at the highest setting. I try to cut my lawn weekly, but if I skip a week, this happens. For the weeds you describe, it sounds like they are much taller than 6 inches and that may be why they are just being rolled over and not cut. Are they in your lawn or on the edges in your flower beds? Without knowing your lawn, here are a few options for you are: use an electric or manual hedge trimmer to cut them out, pull them out manually and overseed more grass/clover (or other FL complement) seed to crowd out the weeds, check the acidity of your lawn to see if you need to add lime to correct pH to promote healthy grass and kill weeds, add organic fertilizer/compost to help your grass grow. I do not like using herbicide because of its dangers. I hope this helps!

      I think a scooter will be difficult since you have to hold the handles of both the mower and the scooter, but try it out and see what happens. :) It is easier to mow the grass when it is dry and mow frequently so that the clippings are small and the grass does not get too tall. Tall grass is difficult to cut and the mower may just roll over them without cutting them if too tall...

What happens is the mower will just roll over them but the long leaves will not come into the cutting area between the reel and the cutting bar, so you have to mow regularly, once a week or once every two weeks at least.

    Thank you for this! My yard is on a slope, and I have new Zoysia grass (installed a few months ago). I found that Zoysia grass blades cut better with reel than rotary because they’re so tough. (Rotary rips the tops too easily.) I’ve been considering one of these manual push reel mowers, but my concerns are, 1) How easy will it be for me on a sloped yard? I do like a good workout, but I am not as inherently as strong as many of the men working on their lawns. 2) How safe would it be for me mowing on a slope with this? I’ve heard mowing on slopes can be dangerous too. I assume this is the safest mower for slopes since it’s not powered? 3) Is my Zeon Zoysia grass too tough for a manual reel? I realize I may need to just try it first, but wanted to get your opinion. This will be my first time mowing on my own if I get a manual reel mower. (I hired lawn services with rotary mowers previously). Thank you! 😊

    • @vilramos
      @vilramos  Před 11 měsíci

      I think it would work ok, assuming the slope is not too steep. You can angle the direction of your mow in a direction they is horizontal or diagonal to the slope so it is not to steep. And like you said the reel blades cut better and may be healthier for you. I am not familiar with zoysia grass but it should work well. This mower is not to expensive so try it out. And if your lawn is modest in size and you mow once a week, I think you will enjoy it. Low maintenance, easy to sue, quiet, no gasoline or fumes. If some areas are too steep for you, perhaps consider a different ground cover for those areas? I hope this helps!

    Great video! How do you cut the edges of your lawn? Specifically the edges that butt up against a wall or fence or line of rocks? I find that the wheels on the sides of my push mower create a couple inches of clearance between that edge and the reel, which leaves a strip of long grass along the edge of my lawn. Any tips for dealing with that?

    • @vilramos
      @vilramos  Před 4 lety +4

      Thank you for watching! For the edges, I use a pair of manual hedge trimmers (large giant scissors). Make sure the grass is dry. It is not easy, so I don't cut the edges too often, but it suffices for me. I like using the manual mower and leaving the edges with a more natural, untrimmed look. In this video, after two weeks of no mowing due to travel, I cut the grass and clover in my lawn that is 5-6 inches long. It takes a lot of work and several passes. If grass is longer than that it is possible mower will just ride over the grass blade without cutting it. You will need to cut it by some other method if it is too long. Beat to mow once a week or so.

      No I do not believe it will work for grass that tall. It will just ride over it because the long grass won’t fit in between the cutter bar and the blades. You will need to borrow someone’s rotary mower and then use this. If you mow once a week you will be able to keep the lawn manageable.

      Do you mean to say it will not cut the taller stuff? Try setting mower at highest setting the mow with several passes. If this fails, this may be due to the grass being too long for the blades to slice and the mower then just rolls over them without cutting them. @@mtnluvr sorry, my mower is old and is not labeled with numbers for the height. Try out different settings and look at how high your mower is from the ground or look at how long the grass clippings are. Key is to cut approx 1/3 of the grass length. So my grass is usually 4-5 inches long and I cut it down to 3-4 inches approx. I cut it at the maximum height most of the time. Some times, I will make my second pass at a lower height if I know I will be traveling for a week and may miss my weekly mow. Or I may cut it shorter if I am overseeding with grass.

      Thanks for your comment. I know some people prefer short grass, but I actually mow my lawn at the highest setting for this mower. More photosynthesis to feed the grass, shades the soil and keeps it moist, and allows the grass to focus on growing deeper roots. Recommended height is 3-4 inches for kentucky blue grass and fescue. I probably target the higher end of that range and more.

If you have horses on your lawn, it may be a big lawn, so keep in mind that it will take time to mow manually. You may just cordon off a small section to mow and leave the rest for those horses?
