- Best mow ever, folks! I experienced my first reel low mow on the Bermuda with a manual reel mower. I mowed the Bermudagrass down from 1.5" to 1.0". This was a lot of fun. I think this may be only the beginning of my reel mowing experience. It's addicting.

@@TheLawnGuardian That's the wrong mower for Bermuda. You want the 7 blade. American Mower website clearly states the 7 blade is for bent grass, which includes Bermuda...

I remember mowing with the manual reel. Super satisfying. I used to run with it to try to get it to spin faster in hopes it would cut better. Probably better to do what you did and just go multiple times in different directions 👍🏼. Looks great!

3rd season now in my first house having Bermuda. I love it! Finally upgraded from a Scott’s Classic manual reel mower (which worked great) to a Fiskars and the difference is far superior. Cant stress enough the importance of making sure your lawn is level and also mow often.

I recently pickup up a Scotts Pro 18” manual reel mower off Amazon mostly because it had 7 blades. After adjusting the axle height it now runs from 1”-3” in I think 7 increments. I basically cut it front to back and side to side. Then usually hit it again once the next day and it will be pretty even. It really speeds bermuda filling in vs a rotary mower as the clean cut and light weight negatively impact the grass less. Like pruning versus hitting it with a machete on wheel’s.

It's just a relaxing activity using a quiet reel push mower...... I just do a section everyday (ish)..... never the whole lawn at once..... it's not even a chore. When I was a kid in the 70's, I had to do the entire lawn every Saturday...... and I had no idea how to maintain the real mower back then... that was work!!!!!
I recently got my first reel mowers... a Fiskars manual reel. So much more satisfying than the rotary. It just looks so clean and fewer wheel marks. 👍

I like the satisfaction i’m doing it myself the cutting action and all that BUT..... there are a few things that a Rotary Rotary does that the manual just can’t.. like the vacuum that for 1 has the sucking motion that lifts the grass up as to insure a uniform cut , and also it cleans up the clippings witch is a major plus 👍

Multi-directional mowing is the way you're supposed to use a push reel mower. Even with the older antique mowers.
My Grandfather had push mower that was really heavy and it was a Cadillac compared to the one you have which is similar to the one we had in the 70's, but I've never seen one for sale.

Crazy how a mower that's a little above 100$ cuts better than any rotary mower. I asked some older guys at work why no one used them since they cut better and are better overall for the grass, they said pretty much "once you start reel mowing you have to cut every 4 days or they won't cut right" I've turned into a kind of lawn enthusiast this year and mow every 4 days anyway. Bought a scotts elite and going to take it out tomorrow and see how it cuts, did a couple of dry runs tonight with it, and it's easier to cut with than my Ryobi electric push mower. Could be because I have a 40lb home made striper that I'm hauling behind it but it was pretty soothing to use.

Looks great Ben! Do you find that Bermuda takes more, less or same amount of water in the Lou? I might have to create my own little Bermuda patch where I get plenty of sunlight.
It seems like it has been able to tolerate less water than the other grass types I have in my lawn. Go for it man! Bermuda it typically considered a weed in our area!

I check it every time I used it. I might have needed to adjust it once every 3-4 mows or so.

I just scored my first reel mower for free, the lady used it about 3 times (I think) but yeah.... free!! But anyways, is their anyway you could possibly do a segment on how to sharpen the blades? I printed off the manual and read it and it's a self contained unit from what I could come up with, do a couple things and put some lapping compound on something, turn the wheel in reverse, ect, ect ect. You get the drift. But yeah, i just like the style of your video on the reel mower and thought I'd ask. TIA, take care.

I don't think you'll get very good results at that height of cut with a manual reel.
The Lawn Guardian - yeah I can confirm even though it can go up to a 3 inch cut, it seems to faulter just short of it. Looks like back to rotary for me then as can’t maintain a low cut to mow twice a week.

How high can the bermuda be mowed? I wonder if mowing down to 25 millimeters might cause you a weed control problem that would require expensive chemicals later.
I'll be mowing what I think is lolium and fescue that low (or even lower!) to give a chance for overseeded things like clover, maize, beans, veggies, etc to compete (I'll obviously stop mowing once I see the cotyledons or coleoptiles - I am not a moron). I have a scythe, which works well (if I keep it keen!) but I don't think I like it for my patch of grass.

I don't think it can cut lower under an inch. I don't have this mower anymore but I believe an inch was the lowest HOC.

needs some lube, it should never squeek only click and clack.
and if it you got it dialed in as loose as you can get it where it still cuts but its too hard to push then it means its time to sharpen.
use a sharpening paste, its super ez.

I'm in St. Louis, MO. Manual reel mowers can be a good option for small lawns but mowing every other day is a must when going this way. Good luck and thanks for the support! 👍😎

Whale..........that wuz fun! However, he failed to say a word about sharpening, about maintenance - taking the wheels off and lubing the gears - or if it has a catcher. This wuz like the kitchen knife reviews that say nothing about sharpening the knife once it dulls!! A good review would take the thing apart, assess those parts, reassemble it and THEN do a test cut. Every machine requires maintenance, and a review needs to address that fact.
Last time I checked the title and thumbnail of this video say nothing about the video being a review about a reel mower. It was simply a video showing me using a manual reel mower for the first time on some bermuda. Regardless, thank you for giving me your time to watch and leave a comment on my video.
