  • My personal thoughts on reel mowing my bermuda lawn at a low level and the new challenges one will encounter. When you mow using a reel mower, it is not the same as mowing with a rotary mower. In this video, I will share my thoughts.

    I never thought you would ,I have a California trimmer with the Honda engine and it’s not loud like that , I have a MacLane with a Briggs and Stratton engine and it’s very loud like yours sounded, this winter I will swap the maclane to a Honda engine I use to always remember you saying you had common Bermuda and you cut it real high

      Don't give up, mowing often is probably one of the best solutions. When the grass begins to grow actively, you only want to cut off very little off the top.

    I had a McLean reel mower, poor thing only lasted about three or four years living in Florida, using it almost every day, constantly replacing the chains, especially the one on the back that drives the unit, tired of pushing it around because if you use the self-propelled mode, the real turns and that’s not good, picked up a used Toro green Master 1600 and what a huge difference in performance cut reliability not to mention it’s not noisy like the McLeane

    very interesting...So Im from NY and moved to San Antonio. I have never seen bermuda grass except at a golf course. The bermuda in front of my house was ugly...like 4 inches ugly. Last year we had a mole cricket infestation and my lawn is still recovering from that. However, I got the Ego select cut last year and started mowing at the lowest setting which is 1 inch. the lawn started to look better and spread out...then this year I got a used Mclane ( replaced the engine) and have been mowing at a little over half inch... The difference is incredible. I do still use my Ego, but more of a vacuum cleaner before I reel mow...Thought Id mention it as you have the same two mowers that I do. Cheers sir and thanks for the vids

    Great video, yard looks super. I started using a half a months rate of 33-0-0 every two weeks and had to reel mow every day. Then I discovered plant growth regulators. I use a liquid type but it also comes in a granular form. I applied it monthly and my mowing went to once every 5 days. Additionally, my grass became greener, and much thicker. It is not inexpensive, $200/gallon, but I only use .38 ounce per 1000 sq. ft so the gallon last a long time. The one I crrently use is called Podium. Give it a try.
    Edit- guess I should have finished the video before replying. How is the PGR working for you?

    @jaredreyes2811 Před rokem +1

    Do you still like your McLane?
    I have one and I wished I would of shopped around for a different brand. I feel the cuts are inconsistent. One side is heavier then another so if I hit an angle the wrong way then it scalps. You are right, it’s loud as sh**

    • @TheALG
      @TheALG  Před rokem +1

      It's a decent mower for the price and a good entry mower. Eventually I will upgrade when I have enough saved up. One way I have found to overcome inconsistent cuts is to place two 5 pound dumbbells at the front edge on each side. Doing this reduces the chances of the front bouncing up when I hit a low or high spot.

    • @TheALG
      @TheALG  Před 2 lety +1

      Growth regulator should help you out big time. Maybe once every 6 days or so. I just started using t-nex and to keep my bermuda at 0.75 inches, t-nex spaces out the mowing to every 3 to 4 days i stead of every 2 days. The longer you keep your height of cut, the less you will have to mow when your using t-nex growth regulator.
