  • So, I moved and now I have a lawn to maintain. There are lots of options for cutting the grass - a gas mower, an electric corded mower, an electric battery powered mower, or even just paying someone to cut the grass for you.
Instead, I opted for a “Low Tech” solution. The American Lawn Mower Company was founded in 1895 and they make manual push mowers. Surprising, this technology is relevant today.
Perhaps you're concerned about the environment, wanting to limit the amount of pollution created from lawn maintenance. Well, the 5-Blade Push Reel Lawn Mower excels at that task, as it doesn't use gas. It doesn't generate electronic waste, it's not as noisy, and it has very little maintenance.
There are downsides though. This video explains the problems. It also answers the question - can mow an acre of grass with this push reel lawn mower. It also answers another obvious question - can you run with the lawnmower?

I have this and I love it! Mow my back field just under an acre with it. I'm a female and 71 years old and this helps keep me going lol

I have their 16" and mow nearly an acre at least weekly and I'm 76 and my weather is usually around 90° plus 65% humidity. It works great and is fairly easy and can finish in an hour and a half.

      Wow! 😲
Even though I have this Greenworks mower… czcams.com/video/GHsGqnBSnNg/video.html …I tried using the push mower as exercise roughy a week ago. The mower got stuck on certain parts because the grass was tall and thick.
So, maybe the type of grass matters… it seems I have a mix of different grass types and a fair amount of weeds. The ground was a bit uneven in certain spots too, so that didn't help. It was really slow going in general too.
Even just mowing the backyard with the zero turn takes me about an hour. It was two hours after cleaning up the edges.

These mowers and my sadist of a father are why I've always paid someone to mow my grass. He made me mow our 2 acre property with one of these twice a week every week during mowing season, from the time I was 9 till I turned 18 and bailed. It was pretty much an all day thing every time, and it especially sucked once school started. About the only bright side was that it was quiet enough that I could listen to music and books on tape on my Walkman.

      Two acres?! Wow! 😲
It took roughly three hours to do 2/3 of an acre.

Late to the party here. I own a husqvarna reel mower. But also scythes. Tall gras/edges i prefer scythes. If you don't use the entire lawn and local rules allow it, you can turn part of the lawn in a meadow. You only need to cut it 2x a year with a scythe. Great excercis, no fertilizer and mulch for bushe or hay for animals. In most cases you spontanieusly get wildflowers in the grass.

Sometimes I wonder about what it was like to cut the grass, even before this manual push mower. I imagined what it would be like to wield a scythe, chopping down tall grass, in medieval times. I figured they're still in use, but they're certainly not common where I'm at. Instead, it's lots of loud lawnmowers. I did see a guy with a push mower, and I smiled. 🙂

Very well made video. I bought one a year ago. Haven't used it that much yet as my grass is always too long to use it. It does make a sound as you said actually sounds Iike machine and I was told that it was very silent. Still need to try to keep the clippings on the grass. Thanks for the tip.

      It's a good lawnmower, but I needed something to manage leaves. So, I upgraded to a Greenworks 2 x 24 (48v) Lawnmower…
      czcams.com/video/TWmbEYnv-IM/video.html
…it mulches the leaves, which was very nice. 🙂

It's a good lawn tool. There are a lot of advantages. It's hard work though. Also, I tried using it this year, but struggled with the tall grass.

I've got an electric mower (80v Greenworks 21") so I can comment. I purchased it in June 2018.
I was concerned about runtime so I purchased a 4AH battery and a spare 2.5AH battery. I figured if the big one runs flat, I can just finish up with the little one.
It turns out that the 4AH one did my entire yard until this year. Degradation set in and some days it can't quite make it to the end.
The nice thing is it charges in a about thirty minutes, so I can keep swapping them and never run out of juice.
I don't do anything special to store them for the winter. I just charge them up after the last cut of the season and they're fine in the spring.
The battery tech is much better today with Li-Ion. The old NiCad batteries were junk.

    • @PhoticsTV
      @PhoticsTV  Před 2 lety +1

What, you don't play Crossy Road? This video is certainly a change of pace from the usual content on this channel. 😄
So, how big is your yard? I've certainly been thinking about getting an electric lawnmower, but the batteries are a concern. They're expensive! To have more power costs more money. As an example, I just got the electric trimmer. It's supposed to have a 30 minute runtime.
Either I lost track of time while cutting grass (which does happen) or this trimmer doesn't have a lot of power. The first time I checked the battery level, it only had one blinking bar. The battery is internal too, so there's no swapping batteries.
I read about LiFePO4 batteries. I've seen them mentioned with generators. That tech seems to be better than lithium-ion batteries, but I didn't see a lawnmower with the newer batteries. I'm not sure if that's because they're not compatible or if the lawnmower companies haven't caught up yet.
Money was certainly a concern when deciding what to use to maintain the lawn. I think the push reel mower is more competitive when you have more time and strength than money. 😄

@@PhoticsTV The land area is 6,050 sqft, which isn't too much grass but I have a lot of plants and trees to go around so it takes me about 50 minutes to complete. The 4 AH battery will last the duration most of the time, however, if I let it go too long now I need to go to the second battery.
Yeah, the batteries are pricey, but I've already got 4 seasons out of them and expect them to go for a few more. It's been nice not having to change oil, spark plugs, etc. I think the Lithium Ion is pretty good, all things considered after 4 years.

I have one of these. This thing squeaks like hell (how do you keep it lubed?) and gets stuck on the tiniest of sticks. Stuck, mow, stuck, mow. And walnuts, bam! Like sticks you can barely see. If your lawn is stick free and less than a 1/4 acre. then maybe.

    • @PhoticsTV
      @PhoticsTV  Před rokem +1

Heh, it does squeak. I've been using WD-40 after each mow. I'll tilt the mower too, in order to really get the spray in there. That's been keeping down the squeaking. I'm not sure if that's the best thing to use though.
I also like to let it dry out in the sun before putting it away in the garage. I know you're not supposed to mow wet grass, but it still gets wet.
I'm thinking this thing is ideal for the lawn of a house in Brooklyn or Staten Island… a little square in front a small house - with no trees. 😄
But even though though I'm mowing a yard that is too big for this mower, I've been getting noticeably stronger, so I don't want to stop. HA HA!

That's a big yard, at least for this push mower. I tried mowing the lawn again. It was still around a three hour job.
