  • This video is meant to wrap up the Thal'Dranath coverage which I have made on this channel during the Legion alpha and beta. To do so, we put the scrapped island of Wod and the "replaced" island of Legion next to each other and see just how similar they have been from announcement to the moment they were pushed off the game. Enjoy!

I like that you back everything up with facts and evidence so it's not just. Salt, salt, salt. There is something more than a baseless opinion here. (Which I see all too often) It's great to see that you can find the time and energy to do all this research with your condition. (Don't overwork yourself now) Also if/when you feel up to it could you maybe do a video on the dire maul instances, it would be nice to see if they are all one big instance or if they are completely separate. You take care now. :)

Look up Brooks' law :"According to Brooks, there is an incremental person who, when added to a project, makes it take more, not less time."
If Legion gets a shit ton of content, it's because they hired a shitton of people during WoD.
The large amount of scrapped content is in WoD is indicative of a large new workforce trying to make stuff and fucking up.

Cataclysm proved that an expansion's new lands don't have to be one, unified continent.

No, they said the revamp of the old world was their regret, because it took too much resources away from endgame content (the new zones) and that they had run out of time to do everything properly to their standards. Look at the bare-bones update of Arathi, or the copy-paste questing between Alliance and Horde in Twilight Highlands.

    • @BarHonigfeld
      @BarHonigfeld Před 7 lety

+Verunme Yeah, the revamp was a massive undertaking. But Cataclysm still felt... more finished than WoD did. That is why the removal of Farahlon hurt so much. It was taking away from something that already was quite thin to begin with.

Thal'Dranath = Elven Ruins, Forests, Swamps, etc = Shit load of texturing and work...
Argus= Fel Fire, Rocks, Dirt, no flying = Cooler Story Arc with way less texturing etc. to do...
So they opted for Argus ;)

    • @EliteRocketBear

Great video as always man, 10/10.
I just wanna share my thoughts on what realy happened with Farah'lon and the whole WoD... I have this theory that the problem why WoD failed so bad was because they saw the interest quickly droping, and they choose to just cut the support on the expansion and let it die, to instead focus on the next expansion and try to recover there.
I personaly think WoD had good potential. Had they actualy done patches and kept delivering on it, it would have been an actualy amazing expansion. The art is amazing, the zones are beautiful, the questing was god damn awesome, the lore that was presented and the cinematics... all good...The raids were ok too... So what was the problem???
Variety.... that was the issue... Before WoD we had a patch full of green skin content, and no, i don't hate it, i am fine with fighting orcs.... But patch 5.4 lasted for 1 and a half years, with the most of the content being orcs all day, and before that we had the other patch with the barrens thing where we fight orcs too, and before that there was a lot of orcs in the patch with the pvp zone in Krazarang. So lots and lots of people were tired of orcs, and then yet WoD was 75 % orcs again. There was not much variety. Mostly was orcs, with a bit of draenei, a bit of Arakkoa, there was a tiny bit of the plant guys and almost nothing of ogres.
I did ask some friends, cause i had noticed that myself, for example, was tired of doing the dungeons.. but not all of them... I still enjoy a lot Skyreach, Auchindon... what do they have in common? There are no orcs in there. My friends agreed... they were sick tired of UBRS, Iron Docks.. and until then, they had not understand why. So the thing is, they saw this... Blizzard noticed the interest of people had already droped, and it was obvious that to keep on pushing on the expansion would lead to nothing but more people quitting. So they cut the expansion, rushed the last content, aka HFC, even tannan jungle... I don't think this was the original plan for Tanaan.. just another treasure island? It feels too hollow. Im sure they just did this cause it was faster, just to deliver something, along the raid, AND to end quickly WoD.
So they saw WoD as a lost battle, and choose to move on... to spend resources on to complete Farah'lon was stupid then, even if the concept was good, im sure they saw that not a lot of people would realy enjoy it, if it was just more orcs. And im not saying that i personaly wouldn't have enjoy that, but im pretty sure many people would have feel tired of it, even if they did not realize what was the reazon behind their own lack of interest.
So Blizzard answer was to not make more real content for WoD, switch their resources towards the new expansion, and try to use what they did learn from WoD. That's why we see so much variety in Legion... i mean... we have Demons, Elves, Vrykul, Tauren, Murlocks, Nagas, this new race the Troggs, Harpies, the Nightborne and their wretcheds, etc. And i think this was a good idea. They also did learn that not having content in the old zones was a bad idea and so they adding lots of stuff for us to do that takes us back to old places, like Northrend and Eastern Kingdoms.
WoD was a good expansion imo, had good lore, good quests, awesome places. The new toon models realy revitalized the game. It realy feels like they did rejuvenated the game with the new graphics, the armor looks better with the new toons, the zones looks amazing, everything looks so good and fresh, much better then any previous expansion. The problem? They didn't finish it. They cut like half of it, in order to move on to the next one, thinking that people had already gone exhausted with the orc theme.
    What do you think?

I am very happy that Thal'dranath is scrapped/being replaced. I couldn't bear the boringness of playing in another elf zone in this expansion. Don't get me wrong; Val'sharah and Azsuna are both unique, awesome and original. Suramar... JUST EPIC! But rather having another copy of one of these zones, having original content is way better.
Also I saw in the comments that some people believe that Thal'dranath replaced for Karazhan. That's not the case, we already know that there was going to be a mega dungeon for 7.1. It was announced during Blizzcon 2015.

The issue with simply "redesigning Thal'Dranath" is that there's lore tied to it, history that has existed since the RTS games. To redesign it to deliver something else is to ignore that lore and the reason it's existed all this time.
In the end, if we get an island of similar size and hopefully the expected quality, then I think Thal'Dranath and it's removal becomes a non-issue.

    @netacid11 Před 8 lety

I have to believe Ion when he says they had a better way of presenting the purpose of Thal'Dranath. But, part of me believes they say things like that because its a more positive and interesting answer than "budget restrictions" or "schedule conflicts". I've worked at a minor developer years ago to see that if something can't be released at launch, it goes into the list for patches and if the budget for patches this year can't accommodate everything in the list, business prioritizes from must haves to nice to haves to completely optional. Perhaps they realized this was considered optional and took the content and to avoid losing that, incorporated it into what already existed.

These dragons were removed later in the beta, but I was wondering if there might be anything about that in the game files? I know it's a long shot, but it's always interested me. Same for how in the Legion alpha there was a storyline involving Wrathion in Highmountain, which was later completely removed. Anyway, no worries if all this is totally removed from the files considering it was in the alpha and beta, but just thought I'd ask in case there are any leftover files in there which might hint at what they intended to do. Hope you're doing well, keep up the awesome vids.

There actually used to be more traces of this a while back. This is all connected to the initial entry way to alternate Draenor which was supposed to be a large hourglass called the Chronal Spire overlooking Tanaan Jungle and connected to the Caverns of Time. It could be seen on one map showcased at Blizzcon 2013, and the actual spire was on the development files for Wod (I have a video on it).
When the entry way was changed to the dark portal, the traces of the spire and dragon flight was cleaned up, but for a long time into Wod, a bronze dragon used to spawn if you went to the location up the mountains near Zangarra where the Chronal Spire used to be.
So yeah, there was more to it than the dragons in the Caverns of Time :)

6:50 Yeah... I doubt Stockton was lying, but I agree that it comes off as dishonest from our perspective. Blizzard may have had a lot of considerations for how to integrate Farahlon's content into the larger Iron Horde / Burning Legion storyline, as all the other zones of Draenor did, but couldn't come up with something that they wanted to produce. Stockton didn't give any specifics on what they were going to do with Farahlon or why it wouldn't fit with the rest of the expansion, and just condensed it down to a vague statement about, "the story that we were telling." I fully believe that "the story" of why Farahlon was cancelled has much more to it than that.
We'll never know if Blizzard continued working on Farahlon's geography or art assets, as we can see much less of what Blizzard is doing during patch cycles than expansion cycles, and they don't include any assets they have already produced for future patches or expansions, for obvious reasons. But we now know that they are sometimes willing to add island zones to the game that are a complete departure from the main story of an expansion. Mechagon has little to do with Azerite, the faction war or the Old Gods, but they decided to produce this content anyways. I'm glad they did.

Farahlon was, in my opinion, the biggest part of why WoW subscriber numbers dropped during WoW.
Part of it was people wanting to see Netherstorm, which was many people's favorite zone from TBC.
The other part was the major content dought.
If Thal'Dranath doesn't make it in, I might quit myself -- I'm a massive lore nerd and once I learned that Thal'Dranath was the island that Gul'Dan raised in "Tide of Darkness" if I recall, in which Gul'Dan dies in the timeline set pre-Draenor... as the Gul'Dan we know as serving the Legion is from the Warlords of Draenor timeline.
This to me would be the single biggest disappointment from Blizzard to date, so I genuinely hope they end up releasing it.

It's a shame when _any_ content is cancelled in World of Warcraft, including these two zones. But of the planned zones which were cancelled that we know about, these are probably some of the least interesting to me. There isn't any indication that Blizzard had any fantastic ideas for what to do with them, and that lack of inspiration might be part of what led to their cancellation.
Netherstorm is one of the most striking zones in the game, but not much of what made it awesome would have transferred over to Farahalon. Netherstorm was cool because of just how shattered and ruined it was. What would really be nice is a new zone with a similar broken theme, and we got something very close to that with Argus.
Nothing is known about Thal'Dranath other than it was yet another zone with ruins from pre-Sundering Night Elven civilization. Night Elf ruins zone #13. It's not a location in previous lore, and unless Blizzard was going to do something unique with the zone, it didn't need to exist. Trading Thal'Dranath for Argus was the right choice.

  • @mentosgott

Legion has the potential to be a great expansion, but that's only if Blizzard does it right. Warlords also had that potential when it was announced, and they messed it up badly. I think they have realised what a mess they made, and they may finally be able to give an expansion without a massive content drought if they keep releasing their patches like they are planning. But like you said, trust is earned, not given. It's really difficult for Blizzard to commit to a solid expansion content overview at a Blizz con, unless the game is already a week from launch. It's like the reverse Valve problem. Instead of giving players next to no notice about a new release and relying on annoying easter eggs to reveal their games, Blizzard shows players alpha concepts like they're going to be in release when a good fourth of previewed alpha content is going to be cut. I just hope Legion is going to rework Thal'Dranath in some way that won't make it as forgettable as Ashran.

  • @dawfydd
    @dawfydd Před 7 lety

You know what would've been a better idea for the newer island rather than just throwing it away out of laziness? because more nightelf ruins aren't ever a bad thing.
Have dalaran crash into the zone and smash some buildings, it can then land almost in the center of the zone and you'd be able to leave dalaran on foot and fight mobs at the "gates" of dalaran fighting back hordes of demons at the edges letting the mages of dalaran and maybe even horde and alliance forces show their support of dalaran outside, it could also be a reason to drag jaina back to defend and annoyingly have to fight along side horde once more.
Then the island could have a smaller number of areas inside a broken city dalaran fell into which besides the demon onslaught could be fairly empty of hostile mobs, heck to explain the fact it isn't on the map right now they can say it was under water but when dalaran fell the spell that kept dalaran in the air had its magic taken by something on the island we might need to discover to get dalaran fixed before the end of the expansion which raised the island out of the water for dalaran to crash into! (i imagine the mages should shield dalaran so none of it would be damaged but it'd almost level the island it landed on)
Which could then lead the legion to attacking it with ground forces as it seems 7.2 will bring air forces which get dealt with in a quest it could also have another zone for my idea with the Legion space ship flying between the zones each day and give bonuses to the emmisaries or world quests rather than just adding static mobs, the ship could launch an attack each day adding legion troops and giving more bonuses to completing quests during it, including the new broken shore zone there are only 6 zones which would be one day short And i felt having demons attack dalaran with how small it is would disrupt everyone.
But hey i'm a dude who doesn't get paid anything to think up ideas that sound cool but might not work in practice but at least i don't say here have a cool island then take it away! lol

Farahlon maybe gets a new Chance if the light corrupted Draenei come to our Azeroth and we must go later back to their version of Draenor maybe to get Titan artifacts from there.
My Idea was to send the Followers to Farahlon and other Islands first and a week later the players could have played the Followers while reading their reports about the travel. Like in pandaria. This would have been a side story so it would have fit in.
Thal'Dranath maybe could be important if the Dragons will be allied Races.
Ah okay that kinda fits, too, that it is just the tomb of Sargeras.

    Another great video mate :)
I was thinking about this for a while... ermm.. what if.. (it's a long shot but hear me out :P) blizzard removed Thal'Dranath from the map and said we are not doing anything with it so people would stop bugging them about it.
Now what if they have breathing room to secretly work on it and then blow our minds with a modified version of tannan jungle / timeless isle etc.
They definatly blew me away with the return to kara vid, i wasnt bothered about legion hype wise but after that vid i am now :) ... now imagine we are x months into the expantion, we have cleared all raid content, back to twiddling our thumbs in orgrimmar
Then the next day on mmo-champ front page coming soon...
Trailer for patch 7.x Welcome to Thal'Dranath (or something), wouldn't that excitment make you think blizzard have got the idea and started listening to what we want... i get the feeling blizz give us what "they think" we want.
If you think about it they are wanting to make 5 man dungeons relevant again, so what do you do?, hang on the community loves kara why not make that a 5 man people will play that till they die of starvation ( i know i will :P) ...ok so we have got people doing 5 mans again good, so the next patch bring out Thal'Dranath you have the chance for a new raid and maybe a couple of side dungeons to catch up on gear (basically what they did with icecrown cit they had 3 additional dungeons) they could also have quest hubs and bonus areas in it,
Tbh they would be stupid to just delete it when there is so much potential for that space, im sure it will make an apperance just got to keep screaming at them till they listen :)
Anywho im rambling, a sincere Thank you from me for the work you do, i always enjoy watching your vids you should be proud that you keep so many entertained.

In the case of Thal'Dranath, I don't understand how anyone could possibly care. It was never anything more than a name and a place on a map. Farahlon was maddening because it's SUPPOSED to be there. It's one of the few areas of Prime Draenor we know to exist pre-destruction. Even if it hadn't been on the map, it would have been clear that it was cut, since it is supposed to be there.
Broken Isles are a relatively blank slate. Without it showing up on the map, we'd never know that it ever existed at all. So who knows what the intention was with Thal'Dranath. Given the fact they never got beyond giving it a shape, they may never have made it past story-boarding. If there is another lack in content, I'm not going to point to that as a reason why, whereas Farahlon was clearly part of a more robust patch schedule.
I think they can do better in terms of a content patch than going to yet another island to experience content isolated from the rest. Give me more content like the artifact quests that take us to different locations in the old world. Use phasing to bring us more stories from the Broken Isles like we saw in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms and Krasarang Wilds. Or do something totally off-the-wall, like sending us to some Legion planet. They give us stuff like that, and Thal'Dranath will be forgotten, like the Island of Doctor Lapidis and Gillijim's Isle.

I think Vol'jin's gonna become a loa and he's gonna take us to the ruins of zandalar and since in MoP they mentioned it was sinking it could have a heavy naga and old god presence, and maybe they could even add a troll raid where we fight King Rastakan and the Loas like Hakkar?
