    Dear Architects: Did you know that you can draw in scale with Procreate as accurately as with Morpholio Trace? Watch as I use Procreate to design from Pinterest images provided by my client; make super-loose fuzzy sketches, then; transform those sketches into scalable plans and elevations you can model in CAD, Rhino or Sketchup.

    0:00 Intro: One of my favorite techniques of designing has always been to “work backwards” so to speak, beginning by importing images of finished rooms, then sketching over those image to visualize a new design. In this case, my clients wanted a kitchen full of windows-like a greenhouse-and a tall living room with exposed beams that also had a kind of greenhouse feeling to it, with lots of glass opening up to the sun.
    0:43 My clients also loved images of Bjarke Ingels design for Noma Restaurant in Copenhagen, so the idea of a “village” of rooms was big on their wish list.
    1:15 Once the client chose the village arrangement that felt best to them, I used my Procreate grid templates and scale rulers to scale it up to 1/8” = 1’ and give it real dimensions in anticipation of exporting the plans to Rhino or Sketchup
    To do that, I first enlarge the diagram, then mark some of the most critical dimensions directly on the plan diagram layer itself.
    1:53 Now I return to the Project Gallery, tap the “Import” button to launch a new canvas, open the folder containing my metric and imperial grid templates, and select the 1 inch divided by 4 grid pre-sized at 11 x 17” so that when it prints out, it will remain at a 1/8” = 1’ architectural scale.
    2:14 To show you how the grid works, I’ll pro-actively highlight three 8’ segments of the grid in red. Now I do a three finger swipe to paste the plan in from the clipboard. I change the blending mode of the plan layer to “Multiply” so I can see the grid underneath.
    2:47 Once the sizes match, the plan should be moved to the center of the sheet before developing it further
    3:01 To make it easier to add dimensions once the plan is matched to the grid, I import the 1/8” = 1’ scale ruler.
    3:25 Once the diagram is scaled up, I refine the plan with greater accuracy, adding layers of semi-transparent white between each successive iteration just as if I was using tracing paper in the physical world.
    3:38 With the plan in decent shape, I’ll use the selection tool to select and fill the plan and the landscape with color, to make it more exciting for the client and to begin to suggest materials and textures
    3:51 And in this case, because the windows were so important to the client, I also wanted to add some partially rendered elevations showing how the glass was still central to the design concept, even though these may not be the final elevations.

      @cloudstarclaudia Před 3 lety +1

      @@tylermacarthur1423 I have been playing around with rough sketches but as for producing professional quality work, I have not. I found the Morpholio app and enjoy that more for scalable work. I still use Structure Studios for my rendering. It is hands down the best for my work but procreate feeds the artist in me when I need.

      @iPadForArchitecture  Před 3 lety +1

      You're very welcome. Do you mean you develop your designs the same way--partially tracing over images--or do you refer specifically to what I used to call "details" as in window headers and jambs, etc?

    • @emilrozkoszny3935
      @emilrozkoszny3935 Před 3 lety +1

      Yes, technical construction drawings. I start off with existing detail I have downloaded off the internet and trace over them only drawing the parts I require, layering as I go. I’m fairly new to iPad Pro and procreate but has started doing the same with my renders and perspectives as you depicted in this video. Such a powerful tool.

    I am an Architect in Austria and I love your sketches! Your workflow is efficient and changes are easly done so I want to do switch from CAD drawing to do much more hand sketches. Do you have a video or recommendation which Ipad pro is best for procreate and the other software you use how much Ram or GB I need for perfect Performance?

    • @iPadForArchitecture
      @iPadForArchitecture  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you for reaching out. The easy answer is get the biggest and strongest. 12.9” with 500 gb. If that’s beyond budget go for the same specs but in a refurbished model. I’m a big believer in refurbs. And then if that’s too much just keep going for the biggest you can afford. You’ll thank me later haha.

    I love procreate, but I also love concepts. And for this use case, concepts is a wonderful ipad tool that has measurements, snap to grid, etc. Made for this. Thoughts?

    • @iPadForArchitecture
      @iPadForArchitecture  Před 2 lety

      I hear you on this. I really like that feature of Concepts--and that is the advantage of a vector-based program compared to a pixel-based--but -*-personally-*---and I want to stress it's personal-- I find Concepts less intuitive. So for me it's similar to that old adage about cameras: "The best camera is the on you have with you the moment you need it!" Translation: the best design app for me is the one that is most intuitive and therefore I am most likely to use at a moment's notice. So in your personal design process, do you use Concepts for your very loose sketching prior to switching over into a dimensional mode of thinking?

    • @XtianApi
      @XtianApi Před 2 lety

      @@iPadForArchitecture I actually completely agree. I find concepts less intuitive to use. I find myself using it when I have to do something like for someone, and often when I need something quick and clean. But if I have the time I do use procreate. I find pen and copic markers are a wonderful tool as well for loose creative thinking. Having an undo button can hurt my process sometimes.
      That reminds me, I love concepts copic pallette. I have recreated it most copic colors in procreate, but it's clunky.
      Thank you for the reply!
      I guess the morale of the story is, procreate: 'add some snap to grid and line joining architect tools, and bigger pallettes and you will dominate the iPad space.'

    Why don’t you use concept or morpholio trace....?

    • @iPadForArchitecture
      @iPadForArchitecture  Před 3 lety +1

      Tell me more about them, please? I came to Procreate first--when the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil first came out in 2015 because as a professional renderer who is also an architect, I needed Procreate's digital painting features. Morpholio "Trace" did not come out until 2016 (www.designraid.net/774/morpholio-launched-trace-pro-for-ipad-pro-pencil/) and at first it was a clumsier interface so I held off on using it. I would like to try it now, but when I check it out it still seems like a less fluid interface, and less intuitive having to use the triangles and rulers to draw a straight line, etc. Have you had a good experience with it? Look forward to your reply, or send me a private email at address on my website and I'd love to hear more about your positive experiences

    • @iPadForArchitecture
      @iPadForArchitecture  Před 3 lety +1

      That would be good. I love how Morpholio Trace allows you to do just that, but it lacks many of the powerful rendering features for which I use Procreate.
