Use these coordinated grid templates and scale rulers to design to scale in Procreate as accurately as you can in Morpholio Trace. Procreate and Morpholio are both "pixel-based", so neither can export .dxf or .dwg vector files, but the same accuracy one expects from Morpholio can be achieved in Procreate by importing these scale rulers.

The step-by-step process unfolds as follows (time stamps):
0:00 Intro to Procreate as an amazing architectural design and rendering tool
0:18 The Procreate app does not currently support architectural drafting or designing using scale rulers. Either a design sketch must be made from the beginning over an accurate grid template, or a freehand design must be retro-actively scaled over an accurate grid. Furthermore, it can be onerous to calculate the size of prints made in order to preserve the scale used in the document
0:32 A catalog of importable, Procreate-for-Architects 11" x 17" x 300dpi metric and imperial grids for use in accurately scaling Procreate drawings
0:42 A catalog of importable, Procreate-for-Architects architects', engineers' and metric scale rulers for use in accurately scaling Procreate drawings
1:02 The importable scale grid templates are designed to work with either Metric or Imperial systems, and maintain accurate scale when printed out at 11" x 17" or A3 paper dimensions, allowing other design team members to scale the drawings and make progress in design development when the designer is not available in person
2:00 The importable scale rulers come in architects' scales, engineers' scales and metric scale denominations. They are designed to match the grid templates exactly, and maintain accuracy unless accidentally "transformed" during the drawing exercise
2:41 A real-world example of retroactively applying 1/8" = 1' scale to a freehand sketch of a 1200 square foot contemporary affordable house design
3:00 Copying and importing the canvas into a grid template document
4:55 Stretching the imported floor plan to match the 1/8" = 1' scale grid
5:35 Reading dimensions off the grid in preparation of exporting floor plan to Sketchup or Rhino
6:07 Importing an architects' scale to match the grid and aid in design

Thank you, especially for the appreciation for the house! Its hard to be an architect and not know when you're going to ever get a "break" and be able to make some original architecture. No one told us in school that we would always be working for someone else and possibly get very few opportunities so eventually many of us just start designing for ourselves. Good luck with your learning. Thanks for the comment and please keep them coming.

So long as the dpi of your canvas matches the dpi of the rulers (which is 300 dpi) then however big or small you pinch and zoom the iPad screen, the rulers will be in scale. You can also read the directions that came with the product, although I know that's not as much fun. And btw, thank you for the purchase!

For interior renderings on the iPad, a buddy of mine uses the concepts app. How do you compare it to procreate for those technical drawing projects? Are there reasons to use concepts over procreate?

    • @iPadForArchitecture
      @iPadForArchitecture  Před 2 lety

Whoa great question. I’ve recently been studying up on this because I’ll be teaching iPad for interior designers for UCLA masters interior design this winter. Big difference is that Concepts app (and Shapr-3D) are vector-based programs, meaning the drawings you make with them can be infinitely scaled and also (I believe) can be exported to auto cad or otherwise reflect actual dimensions, so they have that value but they also require you to draw more methodically and slowly, so one could argue they are not really about sketching but more about designing and making things. Procreate and Morpholio on the other hand are really best for early stage concept design, when you are trying to access your deepest intuitions in a fluid stream of conscious way of drawing and designing. The downside is that you have to manually dimension your drawings in these two apps, as they cannot be exported to autocad or 3D programs, nor can they be infinity scaled up as you will see pixelation. So I prefer procreate as I prefer to design freehand and intuitively, then hand dimension my designs before separately modeling in 3D

The Morpholio scaling and rulering experience truly is superior. I think the question becomes, can the less than perfect scale ruler solution for procreate combined with procreate’s other virtues make up for the suboptimal scale ruler, and every person has to decide that for themselves. Personally I prefer the cleaner more modern and more intuitive (for me) procreate interface. Would love to hear more about your reasons for preferring MT, though

It’s layers set up is great and the accuracy of the design when outline is imported from SketchUp works great. Imported drawings from SketchUp Layoit come in crisp and clear.
