Thanks for watching How to Use Alpha Lock, Clipping Mask & Layer Mask in Procreate - Procreate Tips
Hi everyone! Don’t forget to hit the bell icon so you don’t miss any upcoming tutorials!!! 🙏🏼✨
Ghost Paper what’s that Apple Pencil?
Ghost Paper done👍🏻
Wait did you mention what app you used? If yes i forgot... Could you please tell me what app you've used, and i was also wondering if it costs anything...or is it free..?
The app is Procreate and we have to pay for it
The app is £9.99 one off payment, well worth it if you know how to use it lol, hence me being here lol
Finally, a clear video about masks that I can immediately integrate into my work. Thank you.
Karen Jones i agree with you. Very easy to understand
ok karen
Gustavo Cardenas haha🤣 I just got it
that's basically ctrl + paint non-destructive workflow adapted to procreate
I agree, Karen! FINALLY a video that explains it all clearly.. THANK YOU!
You created this video 4 years ago. I got Procreate about 4 months ago and have been trying to understand masks the entire time. Not one video I saw, and I saw a lot, explained them the way you did. I now have a much clearer understanding of using masks and layers and really wanted to thank you. All the other videos went by the steps really fast but they didn’t clearly explain why they should be used the way you have. A great big thank you for this video! 👏👍🏻
I’m with you! Love this tutorial…
Same here, can’t believe I actually understood it within one minute!
Same. ✌
Other people: uses 6 layers to draw a leaf
Me not knowing how to use layers before: paints a whole Mona Lisa with 1 layer and every time I erase I also erase the outline
Nhan cap u need to add layer and you go to that layer
And color it and when you erase it won’t erase your outline but if you go back to the 1 layer , when you erase it will erase everything
Mona Leafa
@@big-pp8582 😂😂😂😂😂
Not very Da Vinky of you
I just choked lmao 😂
Why is this video so comfortable to watch?
Aw yeah, he's left handed just like me.
same im lefted handed also
Im a right handed but I use the left setting 😂
Ayyy same
feel ya xD
You had the perfect chance to say ”leaf handed” 😭
As a new artist, I was always confused by these terms and didn’t know how they work. Right before I started searching for tutorials, I found this and it explains it so good. I’m so thankful!
Have you bought ipad ??
@@Seespranjal yup. I had an iPad and I bought procreate
@@faheemibrahim1192 i want to talk with you please share you Watsapp number and delete that comment after 5 minutes so that no-one can see that , waiting... Please bro
@@Seespranjal what the fuck
@@Seespranjal yeah what the fuck
Just wanted to take the time to comment and say, I’ve been desperately watching videos of people explaining how to use masks in such ridiculously convoluted ways that it makes me wonder if they even understand masks themselves.
Your video is SO concise and comprehensible. Thank you so much for this. I’ve stumbled on gold!
I'm not even playing when I say I must have watched over 10 videos trying to understand clipping masks but they were always too convoluted to understand. You explained it quickly and efficiently, I wish I could like this 10 times, thank you so much for making this!
I’ve seen this comment before
@@solarlola5953 okey
I've been fucking around with layer and clipping masks for years and have never really understood 100% what I was doing, but this laid it out extremely concisely and nicely with great examples. Thanks so much.
Wow. Thank you. I’ve heard several explanations of the different masks, but this is the first time that I truly understand it. I appreciate that you gave us positives and negative. And I’ve learned the term and importance of "non-destructive masks"
Benoibe 411 I COULDN’T AGREE MORE! FIRST TIME... FINALLY! :)
that's basically ctrl + paint non-destructive workflow adapted to procreate
yes i like that term, helps to understand the technique
I’ve watched and re-watched “beginner” tutorials where they don’t tell you what layer they’re clicking on, or what tools there jumping to and from. Thank you so much for spelling it out.
I’m fairly new to digital art, I’ve always stuck to paper but I’m moving to do a lot of digital stuff on procreate and this video was such a good explanation. Thank you for real, this is gonna help a lot for working on the platform.
Good luck!
This is is the first time I have ever left a comment. I have watched dozens of videos regarding masks and have never actually understood or been able to retain the knowledge. Thanks to this short demo I now understand. It's really not that hard. Thank you so much!!
Being able to teach something is not easy, anybody with a skill can tell you how to do something, but it is a unique skill to be able to truly teach them. You made everything so clear and easy to understand that I’m almost surprised at how quickly I got it! I just stumbled onto your channel, and look forward to learning as much as I can. Thank you!
SlickRickOP you’re welcome!! And a big welcome to the channel! 👍✨
I've been confused by masks for an ETERNITY, and I had no idea how to make the clipping mask work right in Procreate at all until this video! This was SO USEFUL, thank you SO MUCH!
I know I'm repeating what many others have said here, but this was incredibly concise and effective communication. It wasn't confusing, it was very thorough (including the use cases and the advice about non-destructive work was very helpful), and overall it made this very easy to understand and motivated me to experiment with masks. Thanks so much!
And no one gonna talk about his pen?? His pen really hits different tho
Its literally a apple pencil with a pencil skin from dbrand or something
the most expensive pencil he’ll ever buy 💀
ikr it’s fire
It's perefect to hide it from recieta federal
Unique pen haha
You made me understand it clearly Finally. The Best tutorial in this topic.
2 years of college and that is the best explanation of masks that I have seen. Great job bud.
This stuff is really weird when you come from traditional art
Exactly! It's my first time, I got an apple pen and apple ipad and I'm a samsung user as well, so it was extremely confusing to use!
Same. I’m so confused. I just started with it.
Same
It is hard to get a good grasp on digital art, but it's such a relief compared to trad art. Constantly worrying about ruining the whole piece with the outline/colors was super frustrating, so those tools are a godsend.
yeah and you don’t how to worry about breaking a pencil. Cleaning a brush, getting a placemat for your table, buying supplies, losing your art, ripping the canvas or paper, losing supplies, finding supplies, looking for the right thickness of a pencil, the trees dying, wasting paper, having to start over because of a simple mistake, pencil, ink and paint streaks on your paper and also your paper getting dirty. All these things and thousands upon thousands of reasons to use an app instead of doing it traditional (if you like doing it traditional then that’s totally fine) but there are still so many people saying things like: “digital art isn’t actually art”. And also how alot of art schools and normal schools with art classes still make you draw on paper even though in the long run digital is less expensive and better for nature. My school demands us to buy an ipad when we go to school because we use them for school. We still have books though so that’s weird. But we’re not allowed to draw digital. So weird.
This has been the clearest explanation about clipping mask and layer mask that I have come across. Easy to understand and follow. Thank you!
I have been using Procreate for over a year but could never understand masks. This video made the whole process as clear as day. Thank you so much!!!
masks make sooooo much more sense now... and this also made me realize that I have to revise my entire process bc my work was pretty destructive before and I didn't know lol
i have been begging for an ipad for about a year and my boyfriend finally bought me one for my birthday last week. i have been sooooo confused on little bits and pieces of procreate and this video was AMAZING at explaining everything. thank you sooo much i am so excited to start making pieces of my own ❤️❤️❤️god bless!!!!
Someone give this man an award!! 👏🏽🥇🏆 Thank you Sir! You’re the real MVP!👌🏽😌
Soooo helpful omg how did I even art before this
The absolute BEST tutorial on layers. Thank you!!!!!
It’s the first time I’m able to understand the differences between the masks. You’re great!
Finally, I understand the layer mask. Black makes parts of the layer below invisible.
Best explanation I’ve seen for the different types of masks. Really helped demystify it for me. Thanks!!
Wow! This is just what I needed: a clear, quick, and easy explanation of the different masks. Thank you!
Your explanations are so clear! Thank you !
THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!! This helps sooooo much!!! Clear and precise!!!
Can I comment on how grateful I am for your explanation on this topic? Up until now I had no idea on how those things worked. This is amazing, thank you so much!!
I love how he kept it simple and straight to the point. Will follow you on skill share. Thank you please make more?
omg thank you! So concise and clearly explained!
Excellent video! This has made things so much clearer!
Best description I've heard yet!
I've watched a few videos on these tools. So far, this one is the most straightforward and easy to follow-along! Thank you for making this! Good pacing, clear view, and easy to follow explanation.
This was the most helpful video on these elements. Thank you!
Thank you for this! The options always sort of confused me but now it’s clear as day
This is one of the best tutorials I've seen because you compare and contrast the options, and because you explain why one should care about avoiding destructive methods. Thank you.
Agree with all comments regarding clarity. Finally, something I can truly understand thanks a mil for the video. Subscribed!!
Thank you so much for the detailed and simple explanation!
Most straightforward tutorial on this topic! THANK YOU.
Wow! This video was really eye opening. I was doing all the mistakes and destroying my work. Now I know. Thank you so much!
Non destructive way is definitely the smart way, thankfully there's a channel like Ghost Paper who explain these functions. As a beginner in Procreate, this is super helpful
You got it, Jerome! :)
THANK you! The comparison of the three and getting instructions for all 3, at one time, was just what I needed. I am finally clear on these and will be using them in my work!
Best explanation of these features I have ever viewed! Well done!
as an artist moving into digital as a new medium your videos have helped an incredible amount! i have a bad habit of drawing everything on one layer since Im used to traditional but now learning about all these layers is going to help so much. Thank you for making these videos!! Truly a great help
For someone who is SUPER new to procreate, this is an Amazing tutorial. You got my sub❤️
Wow I can't believe I've been using Procreate for six months without knowing this, it's changes everything, thank you so much!
Thank you for explaining this in a simple way
Thank you so much. Time is precious, and we need youtubers like you who actually think what their viewers need. Subscribed!

Very helpful! Thank you. I appreciate how clear and thorough you are.
Great video! I finally understand the difference between the 3 options!
FINALLY a clear, understandable video!! god bess
Excellent, concise presentation. Explaining some of the applications of each tool (why would I use this?) was helpful. I get it. Thanks again.

Wow you’re great teacher. Thank you so much for this great video. I hope you do more great tutorials like this.
This was exactly what I needed! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for the very easy to digest explanation! 🙏🏼
I just want to have fun, not be an expert but I have such arguments with my lack of skill and knowledge of procreate program. Thank god for channels such as this one, or I’d be lost.
Your descriptions are absolutely incredible, thank you so much! I'm a beginner, and you've given me more insight into these tools in 9 minutes than I've learned over the last dozen videos! Keep up the incredible work :)
Best explanation of masks!!! Thank you!!!
This is exactly the kind of thing I've been looking for! I love how you explain everything so clearly and simply
THANK YOU SO MUCH 😭♥️
these videos are so helpful I've been getting these confused for ages!! thank you !!
You're welcome! Have a great day
Never knew the use of the alpha lock! I always used the clipping mask. Thank you!
This video still holds up man, thank you for the easy to follow steps. You've shown me I'm using the selection tool too much to acheive the same effects lol.
I’m a newbie to digital art and this was so helpful and easy to follow. Thank you so much!!
My friend, altough my english understanding level is 50-60% (I´m from México) your video is much clear than spanish tutorials. Why? I don´t understand. Same happened with other english videos or tutorials. Thank you for the tips.
THANK YOU! I have finally found a clear explanation of these features. So grateful to you.
Thank you. Great tutorial. I’ll be trying this out tomorrow x
Yes! Perfect! More of this please :)
Very helpful-I tried watch the short Procreate tutorial on this and was lost
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I finally understand the use of alpha lock and layer mask! Thanks a lot!
I was so confused about these 3 until this tutorial. Thank you!

Thank you so much! Really appreciate u taking the time to make a clear and easy to follow video.
Do you guys want to see more speed paint illustrations back in the channel as well? Let me know in the comments!
Ghost Paper YES PLEASE
Step by step tutorials, please!
YES!!
That would be greatly appreciated🙏. Maybe a silly question, but how did you transform your Apple pencil into an old school item? I really like the look of it.
Yes really! It's very clear. I just found out your channel and I'm so excited about it! Thank you to make my passion easier with all your tips.😄
Normal people: watches the video
Me: scrolls at the right to see recommended videos, reads the comments and forgets about the video
This explanation was fantastic, thank you so much!
These processes were explained so well and easily! Thank you.
Quick question whenever I try to to press the layers to get all the things that ask like do you want to alpha lock it doesn’t show up do you know how to fix it
it is because you only have one layer in your Procreate file? With one layer you get less options once you press on that layer.
What's exactly differences between mask effect on a layer and earaser action?
Jiss Meg mask effect doesn’t delete the pixels of a layer - eraser action deletes pixels forever once you save your file 👍
Thx for the simple explanation, definitely been a help.
Thank you so MUCH I FINALLY UNDERSTAND CLIPPING MASK!!!
What's the difference between using a clipping mask and choosing Select on the base layer, make a new layer on top of that and do the shading there?
I used to do the select mode a lot - the difference really is that by using select on a new layer, any future changes to the base layer underneath will not reflect on your select layer - you will have to click select again and clean that layer on top as your base will have changed, whereas with clipping mask changes to the base layer carry over automatically to all the layers above that you are using for shading, lights, etc :) hope this helps, have a great day! :)
@@ghostpaper That makes perfect sense. Thanks for clarifying ;-)
I like that you are left handed.... 🤪 Me too! 😁
Brilliantly explained, systematic, clear, simple, and finally I understand masks! Thank you so much
Awesome video. It's rare to find a video that is straight to the point like this. Cheers!
Whenever I try to make a clipping mask, the layer that is clipping onto the layer below it is never visible for me?? I’ve done the exact same thing and it never works
Same for me tf
same!
