Building A OO Gauge Model Railway: Scratch Building Level Crossing Gates
Vložit
- čas přidán 23. 01. 2020
- it’s been some time since my last video but the wait is over! 😆 In this video I’ve turned my attention to the level crossing gates on the branch line. I was intending on using a product for Scale Model Scenery but having seen a Facebook post of another modellers scratch built gates I thought I’d give it a go.
These gates, I’ve been told, are Telford or ‘Sunshine’ gates and I think they make a striking feature. I hope you enjoy process of the build.

Fabulous modelling Paul..... 😎👌.......... fred...... and so listenable
Cheers Fred and so good to hear from you. Hope you’re keeping well and pottering at the layout. Paul
Gets better every visit😎🚒🚒
First comment on CZcams you're work is brilliant.
Thank you so much Mark, very kind of you. Paul
I think this may be your very best piece of scratch building yet Paul; those gates are simply so artistically pleasing you can truly see the Art Nouveau style coming through! Joachim
Wow Joachim, high praise indeed and I thank you wholeheartedly for it. Paul
Absolutely brilliant.
Thank you Alan. Paul
Great work on those crossing gates, certainly unique............cheer's Tony
Thanks Tony, one of a kind indeed. I’ve been enjoying your videos over these past few weeks too, keep up the great work. Paul
Really excellent tutorial and build. Well done Paul
Another great scratchbuild project Paul. Looks great on the layout. Hat's off to you. Sy
Wow a first class modelling channel from the best wee country in the world!
I live abroad now so it wonderful to hear our accent and words whilst watching and learning!
Great crossing!
Ian
Thanks Ian, nice to know I’ve got some ‘local’ followers. Paul
Galgorm Hall my father has modelled railways for 60 years and I have modelled military and aircraft for 20 years but now I’m planning a European, probably France-German border area 1960/70s layout. Your buildings etc are brilliant and it’s great to learn with a Ballymena accent. I worked in Ballymena for several years. If you’ve time check out First Bangor Model Railway Club. They are present at most local shows and do two major shows at First Bangor Presbyterian Church in Bangor normally May and November . Although associated at the church they are open to all and have circa 35 members. Great bunch of lads and always welcome new exhibitors. Look out for the twins, my dad and uncle. All the best ! Ian
I hop to be attending Bangor’s show this April. I missed it last year due to being away on holiday, bad planning on my part! Thanks again for the kind comments and good luck with the layout build, sounds like a great location/period. Paul
Galgorm Hall thank you Paul!
Excellent Paul, the crossing looks fantastic.....................John.
Thank you John, I’m so pleased you like them. Paul
You have such good eye/ hand co-ordination Paul. I think that would be a very messy and frustrating project for me. Again a marvelous job and as always well explained and presented. Regards, David.
The art of editing! To streamline the video I removed some of that clumsiness of fitting the pieces together. That and the fact this was my fourth section being built I’d begun to get a feel for it. 😆 Paul
Gorgeous gates Paul! They are definitely an eye-catching design. They are pretty intricate but you make it look easy. Perfect example of how just breaking it down into manageable pieces simplifies the process. Enjoyed the video and the final result. They'd look out of place on my layout, but are right at home on yours. Best, John
Thank you John, the design of the gate is what really attracted me to the project in the first place. Once I’d drawn the initial plan it made perfect sense to replicate and overlay them, I’m not sure I’d have seen the process otherwise. Paul
A very good scratch build of an intricate design, Paul. The detail, including the bolts was very impressive. The final gates looked brilliant. Stephen
Thank you Stephen, I’m really pleased with them. There are a couple of things I’d do differently next time round, such as priming and some painting before assembly. Those hinge sections were impossible to paint black as much as I tried. 🙄 Paul
Zen and the Art of model train maintenance.
Haha, thank you Neil. Paul
Gates look beautiful
Thanks Vinny. Paul
A master craftsman at work, well done mate! We all know how complex those gates are but you have made it look so simple, a great tutorial. Incidentally you may want to put an Olfa Compass Cutter on your birthday wish list (about £7) for when you have not got a handy airfix circle available! Loved the video Paul, cheers Steve
Thanks mate, they worked out not to bad in the end. You’re right too, those cutters would be an ideal companion in my toolbox. My birthday is in May! 😝 Paul
Finally found time to view this project - can’t think what distracted me! As ever, brilliant build and, the end result, spot on!
Thanks Gary, it must have been something quite impressive to be that distracted! 😉🤔 Paul
Great job Paul, love you’re scratch building, cheers Chris
Cheers Chris, always good to have you along. Hope all is well with you, I haven’t seen any output for a while. Paul
Paul, I have had a few issues with health but am still managing to do some scratch build work on Cirencester station. Not really been filming it but taking stills as I go. I am just happy to be able to do the bits I am and will put another video up sometime. It is all going a bit slow this end but some of the results look really really good. I am still around and always watching my favourite channels...cheers my friend, Chris
Cracking build Paul, a worthy addition befitting your scratch building skills chum. Paul at Sandling Junction
Cheers mate. Paul
that’s a good job
i have not seen this unusual design before love it
Thanks Doug. I’m not sure they were ever used on the network but I’ve seen architectural drawings for them in a museum so thought I’d give it a bash. Paul
Wow, that does look extremely effective. Great job. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Dibley. Glad you like it. Paul
Excellent modelling and presentation once again Paul.
Cheers Jamie, glad you enjoyed it. Paul
Another exquisite job with great detail at such a small scale. 👍👍👍 welcome back and, again, a joy to watch such creativity and work.
Thank you so much Anthony, it’s felt like ages since I did anything productive so hopefully this is me back in full flow again. Paul
That was brilliant Paul, you made it look so simple, but you are quite an expert when it comes to scratch building anything. I think I would find such intricate work to be difficult myself. Scratch building is an art and some people are very good at it and some people like me are are not
Cheers for now ..........................Geoff
We all have our fortes within the hobby I guess but never say never Geoff, you might just surprise yourself. 😉 Paul
I always look forward to your videos as I learn so much from you.
That is very kind of you to say so convinth, really appreciates. Paul
Magnificent job Paul, if the build was brilliant, then the weathering puts it out of this world 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 King 👑 of the wash 😉 Best Wishes from County Wicklow ☘️
Thank you Paul, you are too generous with your words as always. Paul
A good scratchbuilding project
Thank you Markus. Paul
Wow. Again. I am learning so much after being away from the hobby for 20 odd years it's great to be back. But so much to relearn so thank you Paul. BTW it's good to note that your taste in jam is as good as your modelling.
Thank you Tony, glad you enjoyed it. As for that Jam, only when it’s on a big slab of cake with coconut and cream. 😋 Paul
Excellent work Paul, the gate looks fantastic but also readily achievable for anyone. I would never have thought about putting the drop down bolts in.
Cheers Alex, the bolts came as an afterthought as I went over to sleep one night (railways are never far from my mind 😆) and certainly help with the desired finish. Paul
@@GalgormHall I know what you mean, I procraste whilst walking the dog, it does help I'm walking him on a disused railway like now footpath
Great stuff Paul
Thank you basset. Paul
Brilliant! I can't think of another word. Thanks a lot for your tutorials.
Thank you for watching and for your kind comments John. Paul
A great build Paul. I am sure you have heard of Kytes Lights. I model in N gauge and have many miniscule lights from them. You are way ahead of any modelling skills I have but I did think 1mm for the woodwork of the crossing, which is equivalent to 3 inches in real life, seemed a tad small for a level crossing. I continue to learn from you and look forward to the next video.
Thanks Ian, I’ve looked at the Kytes lights website and was tempted by some of their stuff. Hopefully I’ll come across them at a show sometime and can look at their products in the hope of getting something suitable. You say 1mm but really the outer frame is a 2mm x 1mm construction once the two halves are put together. I felt anything larger than this was going to look too chunky. Paul
Hi Paul
Great scratch build and another one added to my How to section too ;-)
They look really smart on your layout.
Cheers Paul
Cheers Paul, I’m really pleased with how they turned out. Paul
Like everyone who has commented it's a joy to watch you work; an education and an inspiration to get on and do it myself. Too which end I'm about half way through the shop/cottage build and loving it. At the end of that build you tease with photos of a signal box. Any chance that might still happen as it would be just the job for my layout. Thanks. Joe
Thank you so much Grandpa Pig. Great to hear you are having a go at the shop build. As to that signal box, plans are literally drawn up with just some final measurements to work out and then it’s a go. Watch this space. Paul
Hi Paul,
Another fantastic video! The attention to detail is quite something! I shall have a go myself at some point.
You mentioned putting lamps on the gate posts; you could use the Train Tech AL1 as an LED, or alternatively try one of their 'LED packs'?
The AL1 LED's are mounted on 3cm prongs, providing plenty of space to mount the circuit board out of the way underneath your layout.
Hope this is helpful,
GWR
Hi CGGWR, thank you for the kind comments and feedback on the lights. The LEDs aren’t my issue, it’s the lamp housing I’m finding difficult to get small enough. Most I’ve seen have a diameter of 6-7mm which I feel are just too big. Still on the quest though. Paul
Great tutorial, many thanks
Thank you Paul. Paul
Cracking job Paul. Always rewarding when the final results are as neat as that. How many 6mm disc quarters on the loft floor lost? 😆
Put it like this Tim, you don’t walk on my loft carpet in your bare feet. 😆 Paul
Use 0402 or 0603 SMD LEDs for the lamps. Buy on eBay. These are tiny. I use for all sorts of hidden lighting and the Red ones make perfect buffer stop lamps.
Thanks Mal, my issue isn’t so much with the LED itself but the lamp housing. I’m still on the hunt though. Paul
That's a fantastic build, for small circles I use a hollow punch, plenty of cheap sets on ebay.
Thanks Dave. Funny you mention the hollow punches. I was watching Marty’s Matchbox Makeovers after I’d settled on the discs for the gate and was made aware of the punches via his video. I’ll certainly be getting a set for future projects. Paul
Hi paul great job mate hope you are Well mate i have been working on my model of lancaster station with the back scene on the layout it is coming on will I am using peco back scene because I could not find an better alternative of Lancaster townscape I hope to see you at the Bangor show in April mate clive
Thank you Clive, sounds like you’ve been busy. Will most definitely be there in April. There’s also a small show in March of a small number of layouts at Cregagh Church Hall. I’m hoping to get along to that one as well. Paul
Great video as ever. Have you considered fibre optics for your lights.
Thank you Adam. Fibre optics is something I’ve considered for different projects but yet to take the plunge. Know of any fibre optic Christmas trees lying in skips? 😆 Paul
I would simply like to echo the comments of Anthony Dodge. Cheers Greg
Thank you as always Greg. Paul
