Neofetch Has Been Discontinued. What's The Alternative?

  • I just found out yesterday that Neofetch that is in all Linux distros has now been discontinued. So in this video I show how to install Fastfetch which is I think the best option. Here is the link to the website for the install files:
    github.com/fastfetch-cli/fast...
    github.com/fastfetch-cli/fast...
Other alternatives are Hyfetch : packages.debian.org/source/tr...
    Also Neowofetch : packages.debian.org/trixie/sh...
Both are from Debian 13 Trixie but work on Linux Mint, Debian 12 Bookworm and on Ubuntu.

it's honestly so pointless neofetch was just a simple bash script or powershell script retrieving basic system info
it was the rare case of bash being the best tool for the job and now you got people rewriting the entire thing in low level languages like c or go
      what is next? rust? lmao
okay, neofetch hasn't been updated in years but the script still works, and that alone is a gage of quality of the code, so why rewrite the entire thing instead of just forking the repo and maintaining 10k lines of well written bash (90% is just ascii art btw)
it is beyond my understanding why people would prefer to run big binaries written by amateurs with potential security holes, instead of taking over a very successful project and fixing it's bugs (if there are any)

8:30 It should be noted that fastfetch-linux-aarch64.rpm is not an rpm package for Arch Linux, as arch does not use the rpm package manager. aarch64 means it's for CPUs that run on ARM64 architecture and the .rpm means that it's for distros that use the rpm package manager, such as Fedora Linux.

It is best to remove it and find something else as long as it is not part of the system. Which Neofetch is not. So you can install Fastfetch and there are also other apps. I think maybe Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Debian may remove Neofetch from the repositories in the next LTS version now it is end of life.

Hey Andrea, great video. aarch64 doesn't mean the package it's for Arch, it is in fact the architecture targeted in the build process. aarch64 it's the 64-bit extension of the ARM

Synaptic is included on Mint and also on Debian. Both distros come with it installed. On Ubuntu you have to install it yourself but that's easy enough to do.
