Apparently, Hardin's mom took him to therapy as a child but it didn't help him. But she told Tessa that his nightmares were going away once he started dating Tessa. I HATE this message! This series perpetuates the idea that therapy is useless and that you should be dependent on your romantic partner to help you get through your emotional trauma.
I hate this. Your partner is not your therapist. Yeah, they can support you and help you through hard times, but they can't love your depression away, that's not how mental illness works.
The entire movie is just unrealistic and horrible. There are so many hidden gems on Wattpad, sadly they all go unnoticed
And let's not talk about the fact that Tessa or anyone could feel guilty if they left someone.

I swear, I actually hate movies like this with a burning passion. I’m a teenager and the fact that this shit is targeted to us is alarming and actually really dangerous in my opinion. These relationships are marketed as being “ideal” or “romantic”, but in reality are toxic and can be extremely abusive. Although this is primarily marked towards teen girls, I’d say that it can be equally harmful to teen boys too. We’re still kids that don’t have fully developed brains and to have these harmful relationships targeted to us and being labeled as “romantic” can definitely have an effect on what some may perceive as an “ideal” relationship. Hollywood needs to do better.
As a teenage girl, I completely agree
AGREED!
"Parents, this is what you're buying for your children."
Can we take a moment to dwell on how important that actually is? Even if they were reading it anyway, like you said, there's still a HUGE difference between a teenager reading porn they found on the internet, and an adult HANDING it to them.
At the blood on the sheets part...🤢🤮🤮🤮, that is sickening..

@Booper Dooper That is unsanitary, gross..
@Mary Well, there goes my lunch. 🤮
@Dee Ayy Why Night Productions Good because that was disgusting.
@zoe vanstone Same..
Also, Katara is awesome~
Why are toxic relationships so popular? I hate this trope so much, and I'm in the teenage target demographic. I wouldn't be so distrustful of fanfics if stuff like this wasn't so in the mainstream.
Honestly? My guess is that they have never felt wanted or desired before, so they project their wishes onto these fictional characters and think "this is what love should be!" After I had been in my first relationship for a couple of years I re-read twilight (I was obsessed as a teen), and Edward Cullen disgusted me. I kissed my boyfriend on the cheek and silently thanked myself and my parents for knowing how a decent man is supposed to behave.
Im almost thirty and i like angsty novels but if its a movie i get too pissed off. Mostly i enjoy it because its like an exploration of my bad instincts without hurting anyone, like i cant be super jealous or possessive or ”push and pull” irl but i can feel it while reading a book ya know :P but yeah it should be for adults who know better only
Pull up on AO3. Way better quality works though most are transformative rather than original. I don't touch Wattpad, even if I was desperate.
ettenA as someone who has never been desired I can feel were that comes from. But in real life such relationships never end well.
also the author clearly has an excessive amount internalized misogyny
The "I'm not wearing any underwear! AHHHHH" scene and Hardin dying inside is a fantastic meme template. Change the "I'm not wearing any underwear! AHHHHH!" to anything with Hardin's expression would be hilarious
I love how they're trying to pass Harden as the bad boy character, when he and the main girl look like they both got their wardrobes at different sections of Forever 21
Its genuinely troubling how young girls absorb content like this and model their ideal romantic relationships onto that media...
This is truth. This is actually the same as men having an exaggerated model of sex (and women) through porn. People have to stop modeling their world view on media that is meant to milk them for cash. What they are doing is actually pushing people's biological buttons to keep them watching.
@@whiteskull1067 I agree porn is so destructive and I dont understand why the culture accepts it and even normalizes it. So true, its sad. I feel like a lot of social media has made bad role models and norms for healthy relationships.
@@whiteskull1067 People are never going to stop building a worldview from media unfortunately, media and other people are how we grow an understanding of how the world works.
@@zfactor1999 Porn isn't inherently bad and there isn't a problem with it being normalised, nor is media portraying romance in general. The real issue here is education. We need to teach people that these things are for entertainment purposes only and are not necessarily realistic (and teach them what is realistic). It's a similar argument to educating people about sex instead of teaching abstinence. Education is the most effective solution we can offer.

I mean teen girls do like this movie jaye.
I was in a relationship where I’m very similar to Tessa, and my ex was much like Hardin. He has a troubling past/ the brooding thing and his issues weighed on our relationship. However, we decided to break up because it wasn’t healthy, and he put himself in therapy. Watching this movie really confirmed that we made the right call, because we could have been this. He never hurt me, but he was unable to be a good partner until he got a better handle on his issues. Love isn’t sticking it through no matter how bad it gets; I loved him so I didn’t want to take energy away from him getting better, and he loved me so he didn’t want to put me through the collateral pain; that is a message that we should be putting forward for teenage girls.
Now that's how u deal with abusive relationship 👍
Can you pls talk about how her mom controlling her whole life including her love life, makes her think it's normal that her boyfriend would do the same. Like this controlling mother just shows for me how their always was a person in her life that took her right away and was abusive, that's why she thinks it is okay, because she never knew anything else.
I have a friend who loves these movies. She's been in really abusive relationships, and is still in one now. She thinks it's normal, that relationships are supposed to be this toxic, and movies like After definitely help confirm her beliefs. I'd say they even minimize the chance of her thinking otherwise
That's so sad. That's what I hate the most about this crap. It normalizes this toxic shit. I hope your friend gets the help they need.
When I was in an abusive relationship and watch this kind of films I genuinely thought like the protagonist this was normal and happen to everyone they just didn't want to talk about this types of films definitely kept me in that relationship far too long
That's the truly shitty thing about stuff like this. It makes people who either haven't been in relationships or have been in really bad ones think abusive relationships are just how relationships normally go. They're not.
have you tried helping her and see that is not normal?
I'm not too sure about how the title, After, relate or represent the story (I only watch CZcams reviews and not actually read or watch it). I would like to see the movie turn into a story about a girl walking out of an abusive relationship and After would fit the title nicely

Can there ever be a romance film where women are just friendly towards one another while her friends try getting her out of a toxic relationship?
That would be a great platonic film to watch at least. Can be romantic if the friends actually find suitable guys and be wingwomen (sounds like a rom-com).

"that's the point, isn't it? That's why were so good together, Tess, because were terrible for each other" I can't believe the writer just blatantly admitted that they're romanticizing toxic relationships. like usually with stories like this you just think that the author is just dumb and doesn't know what they're doing but this lady straight up admitted to it! i don't know if that is hilarious or terrifying.
it’s definitely the latter
lets just say i feel sorry for this ladys kids
And it's pretty sad that Anna Todd thinks this is perfectly okay to market to TEENS as "true love" and "that's just how relationships in real life are". That's how she explains away the constant drama that Hardin and Tessa go through. And the fact that she basically had Trevor tell Tessa and Hardin straight up that their relationship is toxic means Todd, herself, has to be aware as well on some level. Yet she STILL wants Hardin and Tessa together. I just...I don't...my brain can't function atm.
This story would have been a shit ton better if Tessa realized how bad Hardin is for her, broke up with him, got away from him for good and got on with her life, leaving Hardin in the past as a "lesson learned". She is only young, after all, she does NOT have to be stuck with Hardin the rest of her life. But of course, it was originally a Harry Styles fanfic, so we all knew they would end up together in the end. Still, once it became published, maybe it should have changed a LOT more.
@@Astrocam88 omg yes. Abuse is never good, or right, or whatever. If you ever end up with someone being abusive, or lying, or cheating on you etc., you should pack your things and leave. For good. If that was where this shit was headed and if the writing was better in general, I would actually have watched it. Kinda educational, in a way - you might be attracted to "bad boys" and all but if they act like this, choose yourself and leave them. "Bad boys" in quotation marks because Hardin is just a piece of trash.

The violence in my childhood home very rarely resulted in things breaking and anyone physically hurt, but I still need therapy a decade after moving out! WHY is this behavior portrayed as a minor character flaw at best and downright romantic at worst?! It's extremely unhealthy and needs to stop!
I can’t believe that there are god tier fanfics out there that are actually on par with novels and you can tell how much effort the authors put into them and yet toxic Wattpad c grade ‘bad boy/“i’m not other girls” girl who hasn’t lost her v card yet’ stories get pumped out and made into trash films that only perpetuate the worst possible romantic tropes. Right? Quoting a novel doesn't make you deep or romantic. It makes you unoriginal.
Jane Austen is rolling in her grave, I swear. I will not stand this Mr. Darcy slander
At least Catherine and Heathcliff were both terrible people.
For real, how DARE they drag Mr Darcy into this. He may have been prideful and arrogant, but he would never disrespect or manipulate the women in his life for his own benefit, and he despises people who would do such a thing (I mean, come on, the whole thing with Wickham?)
And not only he changes his ways, as you mentioned, but he doesn't do it to get the woman he loves. It may have been inspired by her, but he never tells her that, so the change was for himself.
Exactly. I mean Catherine and Heathcliff hadban awuf relationship but I still wanted them to end up together. Cuz being away from each other and with other partners didn't make them better people at all. They only ruined the lives of these other people and everyone around them.
I’ve read some stupid Wattpad fanfics but After never makes sense. Literally any person of any age can see that this relationship would never work and is so toxic. And all of them need therapy
I'm sorry, but Hardin's expression after he says "F*CKING TREVOR!" is honestly so hysterical 😂 Like what even is that facial expression?!
excited for the next movie which hopefully will be After We Went To Therapy
So, I was sort of inspired by this and I think adding therapy would be a good move and a good book: movie in hands of someone who can actually write good stuff.
*How I think the book should’ve gone with therapy and still have the two end up together*
_Warning: It’s long_
Imagine the first book and the second one crushed into one, where they slowly realize how bad they are for each other. In the second book, they:
1. Either part ways, go to therapy together, get better and have better knowledge of how to be a better person and especially, a better person in a relationship.
2. Or, they go to couples therapy and learn to be a better person for each other. They do not break up, but they don’t really meet each other more than once week until they can confidently be around each other without ruining each other.
Either way, my point is that, the second book (or third, if you want to keep the two books the same) is dedicated to them being in therapy. If we go by option 1, they just learn how to be a better person and each chapter, they learn what they did wrong in the relationship and how they could’ve done it better with some ‘I want to forget Hardin/ Tessa but I can’t’ + ‘I am dating this other person and they are absolutely amazing and I have fun with them and am happy with them but I just am not able to fall for them’ mixed in. The chapters alternate between Hardin’s and Tessa’s POV (for example: chapter one is from Tessa’s point of view, two is from Hardin and so on). You can also add them imagining being with Tessa/ Hardin when they are with their present significant other or when they are in the places they frequented when they were together and then trying to shake that feeling and enjoy the present.
If we go by option 2, they obviously don’t live with each other. They are called to therapy perhaps 4 days out of 7 by themselves and 1 day out of remaining 3, they come to therapy together and then go on a date or something. Perhaps they don’t spend the night together because they are afraid of going back to their old ways. The days they aren’t together, they are told by their therapist to write a letter (that you don’t send) addressed to the other acknowledging what went wrong and how they can improve. At first, they just write the letter and keep it to themselves thinking something like ‘I’ll tell them how I feel verbally’ or ‘I’ll show it to them when we get better’. But then, they realize that they suck at verbal communication (one of the reasons why they were bad together) and just decide to send the letter each wrote as apology and a means of communicating their feelings. First, those letters were just what needed to be written as their ‘homework’ but as the book progresses, it’s about all the things. Everything they want to share with the other. Tessa says that sometimes she thinks about how not being with Hardin/ staying with Noah/ being with Trevor would’ve been much easier for her and Hardin learns to control his jealousy because he understands that it honestly, would have been easier and healthier for her. Then Hardin says how pursuing her was a mistake because he perhaps would’ve been a better boyfriend and a better friend if he hadn’t been with her. How he sometimes thinks that he should just leave without a trace so that Tessa can be happy and in a healthy relationship. Tessa is hurt by this but since she can’t yell at him for hurting her now, she thinks about it and yeah, that’s true. But she’s also deeply in love with him and can’t think about living without knowing how he is so all they can do now is work their best to be a better partner so that they can right all the wrongs they did. With time, the chapters go from instances of therapy and how they spend their lives and their monologue to incorporating the letters in the chapters until the chapters are just letters.
And as they continue to write to each other, they realize that they communicate the best with words. So, Hardin writes a letter to his dad talking about why he hates him and all that. He writes to his friends and his brother all that he has bottled up within him. And he reconciles his relationship with them after they give him their side of the story. He writes to his mom everything about his and Tessa’s relationship and mom is disappointed at him at first but then becomes proud of him when she learns he’s going to therapy to be a better person. Perhaps she regrets telling Tessa about the dream instead of sending Hardin to therapy and perhaps she kind of feels like they wouldn’t have ruined each other so bad if she just sent Hardin to therapy. Tessa writes to her mom about how she felt all these years and her mom writes back with her reasons of why she did what she did and slowly, they rekindle their relationship. She also writes to Noah, apologizing for cheating on him.
Oh boy, this is getting long and I don’t even know anything about the books/ movies other than what I know from these reaction videos.
ANYWAY, third book (or fourth, if the first two books aren’t mashed together like I suggested) and for option 1, after at least a year of therapy and realizing they can’t just forget the other, they connect through some social media, talk for a while and decide to meet up (OR they just bump into each other and decide to catch up) which leads to them talking about what they learnt in therapy and apologizing for all the bad they did to each other. And they say how they love each other but they just aren’t ready to pursue a relationship with each other. But, they also want to be with each other. So, they decide to get to know each other again but as friends and they surprisingly hold on to being purely friends and healthy friends. Perhaps they even date someone else to see if their feeling for the other has faded and the other is supportive of that decision. Things go on like this for a while until one day they decide to date each other again and the rest is a healthy relationship.
Option 2, after a year or so, they are confident that they won’t hurt the other’s mental, physical and emotional wellbeing again so they decide to move their relationship forward but this time, slowly. They go into their relationship as if they are people who are just dating instead of people who have been in a relationship for years already. They decide to communicate instead of diving into passion each time the other is not feeling okay in the relationship. And they put their friendship with each other above their romantic relationship with each other. They are not just bf and gf anymore, they are friends who happened to fall for each other. Yes, there are arguments and sometimes they just can’t communicate because they can’t articulate their thoughts in a calm way. So they resort back to what ‘saved’ their relationship. Writing to each other. The epilogue shows one of them waking up in the morning to an empty side of bed with just a letter on it and the scene ends with the person smiling while reading the letter and then zooms to the bottom of the letter where a ring is hooked on.
lmfao
this is missing a very much deserved amount of likes.

The Pokemon cutout with : "It's Tessa's mom!" And the Pokemon music was so random, but I laughed so much at that
I thought she said Tessamon at first.
emily bronte is rolling her grave, WHO let them bring wuthering heights into this
"After" gave the greatest description of my feelings while reading "After": "I feel drained, I have no energy and I feel like I could cry at any moment."
im convinced the actor purposefully lowers his voice for this role, giving him that fake accent sound. i refuse to believe that’s how he actually sounds
Lmao he does if u watch his interviews his voice is much more roadman
It's not how he sounds - he has a posh London private school accent, but it's not what Americans recognise as a British accent, so it's a fake accent even though he's British!

I wish Amanda the Jedi would make dramatic readings of bad fanfiction - her voice is priceless
tbh, the "IM NOT WEARING ANY UNDERWEAR" and shocked face clip is just a masterpiece and one of the only good things that this movie has.
"I still haven't found a character that needs therapy more then Harden" - you need to watch more anime
omg..... I remember the shoujo- guys being so awful...
Can you give me examples?
@@SilentProti Maid- Sama comes to my mind. I hated the guy in that one :P
@@Toyon95 lol Usui haha. He should be locked up for countless charges of sexual harassment.
@@Toyon95 it's not an anime, but I remember when I was in high school I started reading honey hunt and the author's other series at the time, but lost track of it a bit. Found it again a few years ago and decided to pick it back up, just for the sake of finishing it, but oh my god was it horrible, so I dropped it right away... I've tried reading 3 different series from that author to see if maybe she did better but she writes the worst possible guys to be the romantic lead, like the ml from her series 9 to 5 (who's supposed to be a monk btw) literally kidnaps the fl (who was very career oriented and wasn't even interested in him at all but met him through an arranged meeting her mom made her go to) and keeps her in a room for I think a week or so, and after he lets her out she starts feeling things for him and isn't that concerned about her dream job overseas anymore, like??? I forced myself to read way too much before I dropped it too, hoping something good might happen to save it, but last I looked I think she was getting ready for their wedding :/
The first was trash, how could you get even lower?
This one has more but yet its still terrible Anna shld hv just left it as a book
This second pile of trash is on fire that's how.
I'm still shocked cause this movie is legit awful in all ways
This is just lower trash in the same trash can.
@@justheretocommentokdontwan685 I only became interested in this second one because of Dylan Sprouse. Had this year not been a dumpster fire itself, I probably wouldn't have watched the first movie and wouldn't have cared about this one.
The only thing i can safely say to excuse the weird shit that happens in this movie is by mentioning the way wattpad fanfictions are usually written, theyre not written in one solid swoop, they start off as a coherent storyline and then as they progress and get a little more traction the writer stars being like “oh i’ll add this in!” and they do that over the course of the book, the weird new situations only come about because the writer sat down again for a session to entertain the people who had already caught up with the rest of the novel, thats why weird intense shit just HAPPENS, the writer probably reread the latest installment and then thought about ways to make things interesting once again.
This is awful. It's a relationship entirely based on wild debased sex. It's all wrapped around this horribly toxic cycle of fighting, verbal and emotional abuse, codependence, and other things I can't think of at the moment. The fact that someone wrote this and thinks that this is somehow acceptable really troubles me.
There's one defense of it being "fiction". It's another juxtaposing sex and these awful behaviors and not at all pointing out how destructive this is on someone's emotional health and self confidence.
I will repeat this until it sinks into the popular consciousness so garbage like this stops getting greenlit:
Codependency is NOT ROMANCE. Passionate DOES NOT EQUAL CONSTANT FIGHTS. If your partner, lover, or friend acts like a child that you need to make excuses for, THEN THAT IS A BAD RELATIONSHIP AND YOU NEED TO CUT THEM OUT OF YOUR LIFE. You can try to help them, but it is NOT your job to fix them.
In short, Hardin Scott, Christian Gray, and every other abusive heartthrob need to take a few notes from Joe Goldberg and just acknowledge themselves for the monsters and latent serial killers they all are.
I can't stop looking at Harden and thinking he looks like Danny Gonzalez...
Poor Danny don't insult my man like that
i think Harden looks and sounds like Morgz
I thought he looked familiar lol
@@L4zyC4t i like this comparison better
I now see it too. 😭
I dont like the "argueing is so romantic" thing. Thats not how it works
Yeah couples argue from time to time but couples who do nothing but argue shouldn't be together.
There's also a difference between arguing and straight-up fighting. Arguing? Yeah, people disagree with each other, that's normal. But fighting as in shouting matches and breaking plates? Yeah, no:')
It’s fucked up.
One time I’ve seen this done right is in Harry Potter actually
OMG that line from Zed about being better for her is totally a rip off from Jacob when he tells Bella that he could have been good for her like the sun. SO. BLATANT. *BOLD*
OMG, Todd had a cameo? Ha, SMOOTH line...
Spoiler alert: Sprouse isn't coming back as Trevor next moviiiiieeeee
The ad bit was smooth
I was expecting Audible and not Raycon, but still smooth
Samesies, I thought it was gonna be audible, still good though.
Lmao, I love all these glorified self-insert problematic fanfictions referencing classic literature works in a desperate attempt to masquerade as some culturally impactful romance novels of the 21st century. Just because you read a damn Bronte book, it does not make your incoherent collection of words a spiritual continuation.
😂😂😂^^^This!!!!
The dialogues in Jane Austen novels are unironically witty & very well constructed, which could never be matched by glorified C-list romcom scripts.
@@thomaskole9881 you know good ol' miss Jane would have roasted these fools harder than Mister Bennett going on Mister Collins.
It doesn't help that they have characters quote them thinking it makes those characters deep and intelligent but those characters end up coming off pretentious instead.
They do it because they think it makes the characters seem smart or “deep”.
About the scene where Trevor says he wants to tell her something and then just squeaks on a corner, you actually get where he went during that time after the credits and it's easily the best part of the movie
So this whole thing boils down to: "Oh no, the consequences of my actions! What are you doing here?!"
We’ve gone from these stories having vaguely amoral characters to outright sociopaths. Why is this a thing? 🤦♂️

I know that Anna Todd said that her story doesn't actually have a moral, that's just a story and that's she's not trying to say that this is the perfect relationship but I also believe that everything we write is going to inevitably have some kind of ethics behind it, and after reading the books I can say that it's a story about "forgive no matter what", because the whole story is basically everyone fucking it up but we, as the reader have to learn how to forgive (EVEN IF THEY DON'T DESERVE IT) the characters so we can move on, so she's basically unconsciously teaching those pre-teens to always find things to forgive their toxic significant others, and to me that's kinda fucked up.
forgiving doesn’t mean getting back to the person who hurts you. forgiving is a very internal and personal process one does to have peace with oneself. forgiving does not mean going back to the same person who caused you pain over and over again , that’s not how it works
forgiving is not wrong. BUT FROGETTING and STILLbe together IS like that tzey marry and think yay now happy all disney after all this problematic time is WRONg they both need therapy and ALOT more time ALONE.
