      But the change in the Philippines was tilted massively to the past 3 decades, as before that it was not much different than it had been for a century with most people living in grass huts with no electricity. I remember in 1991, there was no electricity on the entire island of Siquijor and not a single hotel in Dumaguete.
      Since I left in 2020, they double laned most of the major roads throughout Mindanao. I was shocked on my return visit this past Feb 2024.
      The most significant change came to the Philippines when the mobile phone and Internet arrived towards the end of the 21st century. I was living in the Philippines for most of the years from 1990 to 2020. In the first years, I had to wire a telegram to communicate with someone far away. And the people were much more curious and less aware of goings on elsewhere in the world. Also people were much more talkative in the street, because they were not social on their phones.
      Of course the development has been massive in terms of physical infrastructure. That photo you showed of Cebu IT Park from 2000 reminds me when I used to lay down in those empty grass fields. But I was first in Cebu in the early 1990s and had a very rural feel, Cebu IT Park did not even exist.

Prices are worse, traffic, internet phones nothing works. Rent per square foot all foods price suck. Products fall apart after purchase because china is sending D grade to phils. Cant work in phils thats a hard fact the BI has special chase teams for those who do. Dogs everywhere full of rabies. I could go on all day. Just came back from the Philippines (California based). I would like to live in the Philippines later on, God willing. The culture is much different. People are so respectful, courteous, kind...as an American, we tip all the time. I actually like to tip, but tipping in the Philippines is not a norm, so it's pretty great to see their reaction when you tip. The workers are so grateful. It's the complete opposite of the US for the most part. I love the US, but I love beautiful beaches, and the Philippines has them -- a lot of them.

Like for example, we have the ICON in F.Cabahug; Club Tipsy in Mandaue; La Plage, also in Mandaue; APEX Super Club near Parkmall, there's a few near that area too in Parkmall. Things have changed now, young people nowadays think that Mango is no longer hip as it once was, and to themm it's probably for the older generation. There's even one in 8th Avenue near IT Park. There's quite a lot of new places, but they are no longer in one area. You'll just have to ask the locals, especially the younger generations.

    Good interviews. The cost of things here in the Philippines is either cheap or expensive depending whether it's a product or service from the Philippines, or if it's imported. Almost everything imported is actually more expensive. More imported goods are becoming available on websites like iherb, lazada and shopee, but it's less expensive if you can just ship them here using a shipping company like LBC.

    I'm Australian, and have lived in Cagayan de Oro City Mindanao since September 2017. My wife is Filipina and was born in Bukidnon Mindanao. There has been a lot of development in the city here over that time. I visited Australia twice over the last seven years, and I can vouch for the fact that it's still much more affordable to live in the Philippines. Filipinos are generally happy despite often difficult circumstances, and very respectful. Recently I've noticed a change in the weather here. Rain has been rare for the first few months of this year. I guess that's the effect of El Niño. I did live in Lapu-Lapu City Mactan Cebu for a few weeks back in 2017. The traffic was crazy.

    My first visit was back in the mid 80's. The obvious changes, becoming more industrialized and the extreme growth of many of the cities, the infrastructure has been the most obvious. The more advanced services offered in medical and business have been the most impactful, along with the tremendous strides in educational facilities. Since the ousting of Marcos, in the 90's, a lot of changes were made to improve the nation in general, other than those key urban centers and areas usually reserved for the more 'affluent' families. The withdrawal of US forces, and converting those installations to commercial use was amazing, though there have been some changes since then. The construction practices seem to be more in line with heavy Chinese influence, being a bit on the 'cheap and hope it lasts' type of thinking. Many of those old base facilities have been allowed to crumble, and the sudden growth of all the condo units seems to be along the 'build fast, keep costs low, and no regular maintenance included' line of business.
    The provinces have probably improved the most, with the introduction of many services that were never available in the past. Though there's still a good way to go on infrastructure, the opportunities for future development and improvements are highly expected.

    I've been to PH twice, great eye-opening experience that CZcams or blogs can't fully capture to appreciate. The traffic in Manila and Cebu is no joke, and reliability of the infrastructure is hit or miss (it really depends on your location). And while it is cheaper than living in the US, its not as affordable as one might think. Costs of goods and services are on the rise, and the whole "you can live like a king on $800 per month" is misleading. $1600 to $2000 is more realistic for the single expat and you need to factor in an additional 25-30% if you got a Filipina partner.

    • @ShredzZ
      @ShredzZ Před 5 měsíci +1

      What are you doing there that you need over 2k as a single? Just asking, no hate or something. I’m usually spend 700-800$ and lives better than in my own country, also dating girls here. Got nice condo, gym membership, sometimes cooking in home sometimes eating out, going to other cities/islands once a week or two.

    • @KnownAsLeo
      @KnownAsLeo Před 5 měsíci

      @@ShredzZ Generally speaking, expats from the west tend to gravitate to things of familiarity (I'm guilty of that too). Housing (modern condo), western style places to eat & shop, etc. are often found in cities which are more expensive when compared to living like a local. Of course, you can always find an exception to that example, like the expat choosing to live out of the cities. One expat interviewed in this video stated he only needs $800 a month in Cebu but he OWNS his condo (so no rent). I wouldn't invest like he did unless I was certain on settling in that location.

    • @vanillagrammer6019
      @vanillagrammer6019 Před 5 měsíci +1

      No hate or anything but you CAN literally live like a king with $800 a month. The average filipino doesn’t even earn $300 a month and they still manage to live there. Most filipinos say that you can live comfortably with $400-$500 in Manila (which is like the most expensive city in the Philippines). With $800 you literally have 2.5 time more money than the average filipino. The only reason for you to need that much money is probably that you have an big ass luxury apartment with a high rent and eat imported food (not local one). If you want you can easily live with $400-$500 in the Philippines (probably even less outside of the big cities), but the thing is most foreigners have such a high standard that they aren’t willing to reduce.

    • @vanillagrammer6019
      @vanillagrammer6019 Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@KnownAsLeoOk that kind of makes sense. But then that’s more kind of a thing whether you’re trying to adapt to the filipino way of living. I know a youtuber who lived in a quite nice condo in Cebu with his girlfriend and they needed like $700 for both of them to live in Cebu. If you live a humble live you can save so much money there. There are one room apartments for singles which only cost between $50 and $100 so you can live very cheaply.

    The Philippines changed a lot in terms of modernization. BGC, GREEN CITY in Tarlac. The bridges coming from Cebu to Manila. A few years back none of that is around. The rural roadways are improving. It's easier to travel these days unlike before I left for Europe 20 years ago. At least, today is totally different in my home province.

      Since I left in 2020, they double laned most of the major roads throughout Mindanao. I was shocked on my return visit this past Feb 2024.
