Sofia Coppola's films last Oscar nominations are literally two whole decades ago with Lost in Translation (2003). She made many good films since then but never good enough for the Academy. Her film was a joke. The portrayal of elvis was a cartoon caricature. In contrast, Austin Butler's portrayal was multi-faceted, revealing the depth of the man. This movie was a joke
I really loved this, but I am an aggressive Coppola stan. Agree with BrotherBro that we weren't immersed in the Elvis of it all in the beginning, which was a huge part of the story obviously and that l along with some different choices in the last third would've presented a little more "color" to the relationship I thought Cailee Spaeny did such a strong job, and Jacob Elordi is a movie star. Great observation on the framing from Mrs. OscarExpert. Another hit for the girls, the gays and the theys for Sofia Coppola.

I think its definitely interesting to compare the two Elvis films we've gotten lately.... Baz's Elvis sort of painted him as a saint, a victim of the people around him particularly his manager. A sort of do gooder who made it big but had some not so great people around him who held him back. This film shows some of that, but it also shines a light on Elvis as being not quite as wholesome as the first movie suggests. He had his own demons and was often his own problem too.
Baz showed him as a drug user and womanizer. Saint? We definitely have different ideas as to what the definition of a saint is. 😂 But honestly, in reality there is no such thing as a saint. It’s a delusional concept. All people have demons. Elvis is no exception. His demons just get to be plastered all over a big screen for all to criticize nearly 50 years after his death. My worst nightmare would be a film showing all my faults from my ex-husband’s perspective after I am dead.
I adored Priscilla. My favorite of 2023 after Past Lives. Cailee Spaeny is so empathetic as you just get to feel how lonely Priscilla must have felt waiting around for Elvis' various returns. Sofia Coppola is a fantastic director.
8/10 I agree. Good film, rewatchable, and I think Elordi has the best performance of the runtime. Might see his name pop up this awards season. The voice, the mannerisms, and the look… he was clear cut the better Elvis. Really gunning for him. Loved him in Saltburn and Euphoria
Your review reveals that you don't have intelligence. The portrayal was a cartoon caricature. In contrast, Austin Butler's portrayal was multi-faceted, revealing the depth of the man. This movie was a complete and utter failure
I loved the film. I think Sofia Coppola really threw out all the glitz and glamour and broke it down to the basics of the relationship. It was very realistic and dark. It shows how screwed up their dating years and marriage actually were. Elvis was playing around with other women while Priscilla was sitting alone at Graceland waiting for him. I found both of the performances very good. I really liked Jacob Elordi's take on Elvis. He was superb and far more realistic than Austin Butler's portrayal last year.
😆 You missed everything. The portrayal of elvis was a cartoon caricature. In contrast, Austin Butler's portrayal was multi-faceted, revealing the depth of the man. .this movie was a complete and utter BS joke.
@glenn212now And the reason you found it to be a cartoon is because you lack the intelligence necessary to understand that era. You're not well educated about the subject. I AM. @@bradhuskers Wow. You know it's possible to have differing opinions about a movie without telling someone they aren't intelligent. Anyway, I think Baz Luhrman's best movie is 'Moulin Rouge.' Now THAT is a masterpiece.
What is important to note is that I'm not sure that Elvis, dancing, songs etc was deliberately taken out cause the idea was it was not important. Always enjoy your reviews. I enjoy hearing another persons view on a movie. I do have to say, I find it surprising that people act like this is new information. I read the book and saw the tv mini-series in the 80s. It just old news. Also, it is very one sided as it is from her perspective. Though I believe many of her experiences are true, I find her action over the years strange. She took her maiden name back when she divorced to reclaim her identity ( completely normal). Then changed her name back to Presley after he die. ( not normal). She was with Marco Giribaldi for 20 years after Elvis’ died. They had a son together. I find it odd that a 78 year old women is so focused on only 10 years of her life. Especially. If those years were so confusing and painful as she described. All of it is odd to me. But back to the movie. I have not enjoyed this directors other movies. Her work is just not my taste. So, I don’t plan to see it in the theaters. I don’t think the significant other would find this date night material.
I mostly really like Priscilla (it’s in my top ten of the year). There are just 2 issues I have with it. 1. Trying to pass off that actress as a 14 or 15 year old was distracting. I know there isn’t really a better way to do it, but to me it was almost the equivalent of having a white man play a character that is supposed to be experiencing anti-Black racism; she acts very well but does not fit the role, and it is distracting. 2. Several scenes were weirdly dark in a way that was neither aesthetically pleasing nor made sense in universe (Priscilla’s dad questioning Elvis in the living room with the lights off being the most obvious). I know it was a choice, but I think it was a bad one. Everything else I loved. Especially the complexity of the main relationship and the different ways they filmed Priscilla to make her size more or less relevant in each scene. 8/10, very good, quality of performances was the best part. As far as awards, I personally have it in my top 5 in Lead Actress (second only to Huller; I have issues with the portrayal early, but later in the relationship Spaeny is a powerhouse), Supporting Actor, and Director, though I know it has little real award chance.

Third: I never said anything bad about Butler. For the specific story that was being told, I think both him and Elordi were very good (but hard to compare given the different roles).
