I'm going to watch it, regardless. I suspect from everything I've heard and read. Coppola stubbornly held on to this project for so long. He took a minimalist approach to direction and allowed the actors to self-direct. Editing will be the winning or losing stroke for this film. In your judgement, it clearly lost. Hopefully, I can make sense of it.

A veteran iconic filmmaker rewrote and rewrote this script for 40 years and then worked through it with actors and crew....and then you make a video saying no ideas were explored in it. Maybe you just missed them.

It is a bad ending. What makes them think that the audience want to watch the protagonist suffocating and killing a greedy cop for nothing... so to speak, but the crime does not fit the punishment. It is a little bit sadistic. The protagonist is making out with a femme fatale while the cop is dying. The critics are saying that it is a good movie and all. What is the world coming to? The ending matters. They decided to end it with sadistic and corny note: rated G version of nature born killers. The film makers settle for personal satisfaction instead of delivering the right product. They don't care about the audiences' feelings. They assume that if they like it, the audience would like it, too. But they forgot a key formula. Bad guys are not supposed to win in a movie. They must pay for their mistakes no matter what. Justice always wins. Still you have to give some movies the benefits of the doubt. They don't have to follow formulas. The bad guys have style. The difference is in hit man, the protagonist decided to be bad at the last minute and kill a cop sadistically. It is totally unnecessary. They could have shot the cop by accident and killed him. The audience would feel sorry for them and continue to cheer for them. But after they suffocated and killed the cop, things get real in a bad way. It is not comedy anymore. It becomes horror. They left a bad taste on the audience mouth. I think that they should reshoot the ending. The girl shoots the cop by accident and Glen helps her get rid of the body... As a matter of fact, the girl is femme fatale. After they get rid of the body or shoots the cop accidentally on purpose, she tries to kill Glen too. She drugs him, puts him behind the wheel and pushes the car over the cliff with the cop's body in the trunk. Yet Glen survives the crash and confronts her or rather he would tell her that he has forgiven her, he loves her and asks her to marry him. She half-heartedly agrees to marry him. They cash the insurance money. Yet he gives all the money to the poor and plants an incriminating evidence against her and have her arrested. In the very end, he pays her a visit at prison.

Huh? You failed to explain the big head-scratcher: why the rush to hightail it out of Cannes and miss two of the most lauded films of the festival? Obviously, you couldn't have known beforehand, but why beat (inexplicably) such a hasty retreat? You couldn't have stayed put for another day or two? Thanks for the other reviews, though.

i watched the whole video and i dont understand..? i think im a very small minority that really hated this movie but i think i just dont understand it the scenes were so long and the run time was like 3 hours but i genuinely couldnt tell that the whole thing was in a span of like a few months to a year- it looked like maybe 2 weeks to me? honestly imo the acting was kinda cringe and i j couldnt empathize at all. maybe my attention span is actually completely fried but i thought that so many scenes were so unneccessarily long and the twist of remi dying was j so stupid and random that it didnt make me sad and it just pissed me off? to me it looked like leo literally didnt care like i get that hes hidign his emotion but i felt like he got over it so easy and it just generally felt so unrealistic?? imo one of the worst movies ive ever watched but i rlly want my mind to be changed- pls someone change my mind about this fdabsjhdjh (edit: just wanted to specify that i am a teenager but with my experiences im more similar to remi than leo and i literally CANNOT understand why they didnt decide to talk it out and why he decided to not j deal with it/suck it up and find someone else to play with)

Obviously haven't seen this movie yet, but 'The Florida Project' and 'Red Rocket' are two of my favorite recent movies so I'm excited for this. Anyway, I think when you brought up the concerns of this movie being "surface level" and "distant", you have to remember the movies Baker did before this one. He is the absolute definition of a 'Slice of Life' movie director. You aren't necessarily supposed to feel like you're following a movie plotline, rather you have just been thrown into the everyday life of a person going through hardships and slowly discover the world they live in (often one that people who do not live in poverty often see). There isn't always a big resolution or a happy ending in his movies. Sometimes things in life suck. Sean Baker is fantastic at showing this aspect in his films. For The Florida Project, you are thrust into the everyday life of poor people living just on the outskirts of Disney. For Red Rocket, you are put into the world of the everyday charismatic con man who takes advantage of the ignorant, poor, and disadvantaged. Baker's movies almost always are aimed at creating humanity within the world of sex work and showcasing how one ends up in that life to begin with (while also de-stigmatizing it). Seems like Anora is right up that ally. The best part about Sean Baker movies is everything he portrays feels 100% real and are things that are definitely happening in the real world. I've lived in Florida all my life and walked through the "projects" outside of Disney. I have family members just like Simon Rex in Red Rocket, who are mentally ill, narcissistic, and constantly trying to hustle others for a get rich quick scheme. And while I haven't seen Anora yet, I'd imagine the main character is very much like many of the young woman, particularly hispanic and foreigners, who I've seen in South Florida strip joints trying to sniff out the richest person they can find so they can become a sugar momma and live the easier life. This ended up becoming a novel, but the key point is that Baker films are a very distinct vibe. He wants to make real movies, about real situations, having real problems. It is why he often casts non-actors in his roles. He isn't afraid to throw some jokes into his films and then immediately follow it up with a heartbreaking scene. He's an incredibly skilled filmmaker in that way. Anyway, I'm excited to see Anora and it's crazy that it won the Palme d'Orr. Whether he gets awards for this or not, it's nice that directors like Sean Baker are still out there, making movies with an important message, one that many other filmmakers are scared to touch out of fear of alienating a wide audience. Whenever this gets to theaters I'll definitely be first in line.

Cannes is exhausting. Staying there for the whole time to watch everything is a challenge. The major reviewers get to watch films way before the festival.

Coppola is a rich, old, self indulgent hack at this point. There are so many master directors who made great films in old age that are coherent, interesting and profound.
