  • Sofia Coppola’s newest film Priscilla is a beautiful, quiet meditation on a young woman’s painful journey into adulthood in the gilded cage of one of the most famous people on the planet. In Priscilla, Coppola weaves together romance and agony to create a tapestry of feeling - the feeling of love, the feeling of resentment, the feeling of being totally alone. So what is the film really trying to say about Priscilla, Elvis Presley, and their relationship? Let’s unpack the real facts of her real life and the film’s version to get a better understanding of the deeper story Coppola is actually trying to tell. (Plus, we’ll explain the real life Elvis drama the film came up against.)

Priscilla was never left alone in a big house. That completely contradicts what she said in her book. Elvis asked the other wives to be friends to her, and she had two maids, one cook, Aunt Delta, Elvis' grandmother in the house with her. As soon as she graduated, (about two months after she arrived,) Elvis bought her a car. "Keep her like a pet"?? Of course he wanted her to be there for him. That is what every husband wants. He dictated her hair and makeup? He did not make her do it. If you look at the later pictures she quit dressing the way he liked as soon as Lisa was born. That didn't even go on through the marriage.
The tabloid reports were usually untrue. She was never thrust into an early adult life. She didn't even come into Graceland until she was two months short of 18.

I wish you would have clarified that Priscilla's father died when she was a baby, and the man we see in the movie is Priscilla's STEP father, who started a new family with her mother with their own kids, Priscilla being the odd one out. If her real father were alive, I believe he would've protected her differently, and that's an important distinction.

When it comes to the riskiness of minors in a relationship with older individuals , some people get stuck on the SA itself. They don’t count isolating a person into an environment they aren’t comfortable in, morphing them into their beauty ideals, and all those “little” lead ups that make them susceptible to the advances. How a person so young would want the approval, acceptance, and love of the man who was basically morphing her.

There was no sexual abuse. Priscilla has said over and over that he never took it past kissing until she moved in with him. Then she was two months short of 18. He was away and didn't come back for three months so when he got back she was 18 years and one month old. I haven't seen the movie yet but I've been told that it shows him taking her blouse off when she was under age. If it says that, it is another one of Priscilla's lies. She has always said that he didn't.

Oh spare me this movie is garbage. In the late 1950s the age of consent was 14 years old in germany. In the fifties and United States it was not unusual for 15 year old girls to get married. My mother was 15 years old when she dated my father who was 23 got married at 18. It was a different time by then I'm so sick of Priscilla talking so negatively about one of the greatest icons ever just because she resents him and she's jealous of him. She was not abused spare me that's the narrative that Priscilla has been singing for 50 years. We've been listening to Priscilla side the story for 50 years but we have not heard Elvis aside the story. What about his side of the story? Oh that's right he's dead so he can't speak so you know what? As a hardcore Elvis fan I'm going to fill you in on a few things. The age of consent in Germany in the late 50s was 14 years of age. When Priscilla met Elvis in Germany she was not a virgin. She already had boyfriends as young as 13 and she was very sexually active. Even after Elvis left Germany she had several boyfriends one was Tommy Stewart and they've come out publicly and said they had sex with priscilla. The way for her to meet Elvis is not what's portrayed in the movie. She approached Curry Grant I'm sure they changed his name cuz I wouldn't pay a dime to see this movie and was more of a pedophile I think he was about 25 26 years old married with kids but Priscilla looked a lot older than her age and he wanted to get in her pants. So basically she slept with curry Grand so she can meet elvis. Then has the nerve to claim that she told Elvis that Curry Grant raped her and Elvis kicked him out of the group and wanted nothing to do with curry Grand again. The problem with that is curry Grant had proved he had photos from the newspaper of him driving Priscilla and Elvis to the train station when he was leaving germany. This woman has been lying for years. She was not a prisoner in Graceland Billy Smith's which is Elvis's first cousin his wife Joe said she had some friends she went out with Patsy Presley he was close to her age they went shopping they went out to eat they went bowling. She was not a prisoner and she could have left anytime she wanted but she didn't because she wanted to marry Elvis Presley for the fame and the money. And as far as grooming her that's a bunch of hogwash too. Patty Perry who was Elvis's friend and Priscilla's hairdresser did Priscilla's hair and makeup and Priscilla was the one that insisted on kicking on the makeup and doing that high beehive now here's another tip of the information once Elvis got married to Priscilla he actually wasn't screwing around but Priscilla had an affair 6 weeks after she gave birth to Lisa Marie with a dance instructor. Elvis introduced Priscilla to Mike Stone and my stone was a married man with a wife that was pregnant and Priscilla broke up that marriage. Mike Stone in an interview said Priscilla chased after him. Just like She chased after elvis. I can go on and on but the bottom line is this woman has been making millions of dollars trashing Elvis painting a false story making herself look like a victim when the real victim here is Elvis Presley himself

Loved this movie and this is a great analysis!
Something I’d love to see y’all talk about is the idea of the “perfect victim”, which the commentary around this film makes me think about. This idea that if somebody isn’t perfect/moral/upright/well-adjusted/“good” now then they are unreliable and shouldn’t be trusted in any regard to tell their story. This is also happening with Britney Spears, happened with Rhianna, and so many more. I’m sure it happens to men as well, but especially with women it seems the general public are much happier to dismiss anything they have to say about having been abused if they don’t live up to society’s standard of good.
It’s very much like the “she shouldn’t have been wearing that if she didn’t want to get r*ped” logic.

I'm glad you enjoyed the fictional story of Priscilla's life because that was all made up. I've Been a Long Time Elvis fan done a lot of research and Priscilla lies about Elvis and makes herself look like a victim when she was not. Read the book child bride you can get it from the library Suzanne finstad did a great job in interviewing several hundred people that knew Priscilla and grew up with her and she documented all her resources. Priscilla wasn't even a virgin when she met Elvis and after he left Germany she had several boyfriends and were sleeping with them. Her parents pushed her to go out with Elvis let her stay out till 2:00 in the morning. That's because they sell dollar signs and that's why they allowed her to move to Memphis when she was 17 years old 3 months I have graduating high school. She was not a prisoner in Graceland other Mafia Memphis house wife said she had friends she went bowling she hung out with Patsy Presley he was close to her age. And she could have left at any time but she didn't because she wanted that last name presley. She cheated on Elvis when they were married Elvis actually did not cheat on her when they were married when she first came to Memphis and he was out doing movies. She had an affair with her dancing instructor 6 weeks after Lisa Marie was born then an affair with Mike Stone who was a married man with a pregnant wife. Zillow was overheard at Elvis funeral talking to her sister saying I'm finally free. She was they probably think I'm crying and I'm not. She had sunglasses on. This is a cold-hearted witch who I can go on and on until you think she did to her daughter Lisa Marie and to our grandson benjamin. And here she is talking away making more money and people like you are paying her LOL you're giving her your money lol. You couldn't pay me to see this crap well Priscilla has had 50 years to tell her side of the story. What about Elvis aside the story doesn't he have a right to tell his side of the story? Oh that's right he can't he's dead. For a woman who claims she loves this man so much and wants to be buried near him yet she makes him out to be a pedophile groomer and a horrible person. Well you know who the horrible person is? Priscilla do you know who the real victim is here? Elvis Presley

I've had to come to this realization with my own dad's passing. He was an unique man and a loving father and husband but he had his flaws. So for those 11 months before Priscilla entered his life, Elvis dated a lot of other women in Germany.

She was not prayed upon or abused. Little info for you go to the library and rent out the book child bride by Suzanne finstad. It's an eye-opener you'll find out who the true Priscilla is. She's been bashing Elvis Presley for 50 years making millions off of him. She was not even a virgin when she met him. And the age of consent in Germany in the late 50s is 14 years old. In the United States back in the 50s and 60s young girls aided older men and got married very young. My mother was 15 years old when she dated my father who was 23 and got married at 18. After Elvis left Germany Priscilla had boyfriends they've come out and talk publicly. One of them was Tommy Stewart who was a rebel. She had sex with these boys. Her parents dollar signs that's why they allowed Priscilla to hang out with Elvis to 2:00 in the morning and then to move to Memphis at the age of 17 3 month shy of graduating high school. So if anybody was a predator it was her own parents. No one's saying that Elvis was perfect but her movie and her book portrays him as his monster which he was not. Priscilla cheated on Elvis and he wasn't cheating on her when they were married. She cheated on him 6 months after giving birth to Lisa Marie with her dance instructor then chased after Mike Stone whom Elvis introduced Priscilla to and Mike Stone was a married man with a wife who was pregnant. Priscilla broke up that marriage. Yes Elvis was upset about his marriage is not working out because he never thought he'd be divorced and he did not want to lose his daughter. Elvis was a wonderful father Priscilla was a horrible mother. After Elvis died she ignored Lisa Marie shoved it to nannies while she went traveling with her boyfriends. Another thing is Priscilla got a huge settlement from Elvis in divorce then had the nerve to go back and sue him again for more money and put a lien on his beloved graceland. This woman is a complete witch and I'm just giving you the tip of the iceberg. So before you speak and you judge Elvis Presley do you research about priscilla. Because Priscilla is a complete liar. And the real victim here is Elvis presley. Who is dead and cannot defend himself

With Lisa Marie (though I can’t say I knew much about her) I feel like it came with her never understanding her father qas a flawed person as we all are. If a grown man is going after a 14 year old, he is a predator. He can be the guy you see as dad and a bad person. Two things can be true.

When Elvis Presley romanced German actress, Vera Tschechowa
U.S. army soldier, Elvis Presley, was stationed in Friedberg, Germany from October 1958 to March 1960. While many biographies sum up his love life in Germany as only involving Priscilla, Elvis did not meet Priscilla Beaulieu until September 1959. So for those 11 months before Priscilla entered his life, Elvis dated a lot of other women in Germany.
Even though Elvis had a girlfriend back home in Memphis named Anita Wood

I just saw this film and was surprised at how much I enjoyed the story. While I am not sure I would like to rewatch it, I do feel it is a story that everyone can relate to. You do get a sense that there was love and a longing for creation of a family from both Elvis and Pricilla, yet like he says at the end when she leaves him, the timing was wrong. He wanted the full experience of a career and home life as he saw it and she wanted a bf, a lover, a husband and a man, with whom she would never be lonely. The loneliness united them and if one would take fame out of the equation, perhaps they could have had it all. I feel Sofia did a very good job at respecting the things considered private and showing both the good and the bad. At times I felt parallels with Marie-Antoinette and happy that Princilla grew up and understood that it was time to leave, how brave of a decision was thay, given how her life was controlled and she had to now be on her own.

If this movie were the truth then it would be one thing but perhaps, you and anyone else blindly accepting Priscilla's version need to ask yourself if you're believing the wrong person in the situation. Elvis wasn't perfect and no true fan of his would ever deny that but Elvis fans do the research. Priscilla being satisfied by the story is no big thing considering she was involved in making it and it erased the parts of her story where she does wrong like her own extra marital affairs that ruined the family of the man she left Elvis for, that most of this movie is wildly inaccurate, could be contradicted by Priscilla's own words at one point or another, and that ultimately, it's really convenient time to start telling your side of the story is after he died but that isn't something Priscilla wants any of her exes to do since she made her ex sign an NDA so that in the event of her death or their break up, he can't write a tell all book just like she did.

1973: Elvis gives Priscilla what she asked for in the divorce. However she goes back to court after this demanding more money.
Result: Elvis sells his rights to his music catalogue going back to Sun Records all the way up to 1973 to RCA for $3M to pay Priscilla per the second divorce settlement/ suit. Elvis got less than half. Parker received more than half.
March 3, 1977: Elvis has his Last Will & Testament legally changed & goes to the Shelby Court Probate offices with Ginger Alden (his then girlfriend/ fiance), Charlie Hodge (long time friend & employee), Beecher Smith (elder family member that is an attorney & that represents Elvis as his Last Will, Testament, & Trust attorney), and Beecher Smith's wife, Anne Dewey Smith.
They meet in a small room adjacent to the Shelby Court Probate Clerk's office with Probate Judge W. Evans presiding during a 20 minute session.
According to the terms of the will, Vernon Presley will receive his son's personal property, quote, "including trophies and other items accumulated by me during my professional career." Vernon will also have quote, "complete freedom and discretion as to disposal of any and all such property so long as he shall do it in good faith and in the best interest of my estate."
Upon the death of Elvis's father and grandmother, all remaining assets of the trust will go to Lisa Marie Presley when she turns the age of 25, according to the will.
August 16, 1977: Elvis passes away at the age of 42. Lisa Marie is 9 years old.
Shortly after the death of Elvis, Priscilla finds out there is a new will and that she NOT mentioned in it.
1978: Priscilla sues the estate. Vernon contests it, saying she got a hefty divorce settlement and that she was, also, of course, receiving continued child support from the estate after Elvis's death.
1978: Vernon and the City of Memphis gets the ball rolling for Graceland to become a museum.
1979: Vernon has another heart attack and dies.
Note: Sometime before this he made Priscilla co- executor of the estate. Some people say Vernon had done this when she finally brought Lisa M. to see him in the hospital.
I cannot confirm if this is 100% true or not. But I do believe that this is the right decision because if Vernon hadn't Priscilla could have sued the estate heavily since she was at that time the sole guardian of Elvis's only heir, Lisa Marie. We definitely know that Priscilla was NOT a co- executor in 1978.
The Commerce Bank Of Memphis and Joseph Hanks were the other two co- executors (per Elvis's Last Will & Testament dictation).
After Vernon died, money was disappearing fast.
1980: Judge Joseph W. Evans appoints Blanchard E. Tual as Lisa Marie's sole probate and trust attorney to protect her interests pertaining to her father's estate (her inheritance).
Blanchard E. Tual immediately gets to work and noticed that Elvis's manager, Tom Parker, is still receiving 50% of the estate's total yearly income.
Blanchard E. Tual launches a legal investigation into Col. Tom Parker and his past financial dealings as well as his past origins and work history.
What Blanchard E. Tual uncovers is a long and tangled web of questionable conduct, origins, and also- pertaining to Elvis Presley specifically- a legal case of financial fraud and abuse.
August 15, 1981: Blanchard E. Tual reports to Judge Evans after a year long investigation of all that had been found out. Shortly after, Blanchard E. Tual files a suit against Tom Parker and at the same time Judge Evans dispatches a formal legal "cease and desist" letter to all three co- executors of the estate to stop payments to Tom Parker immediately.
The Bank of Commerce and Joseph Hanks are both willing to comply.
Priscilla is not. She bulks at first.
The suit is settled with Tom Parker owing $2M (US) to the estate and ordered to relinquish rights and ownership of all things Elvis he has.
After this, Judge Evans orders the co- executors to run and manage Graceland. Priscilla wanted Tom Parker. She was quickly denied by the judge in lieu of all that has since been uncovered about Tom Parker.
The Bank Of Commerce of Memphis wanted Jack Solden- he and his team continues to run Graceland today.
And oh let's not forget to mention that Priscilla asked Elvis way after the divorce the divorce for him to buy her dad a wine orchard. Elvis told her, "No." Then told Vernon that she was nothing more than a bloodsucker trying to drain him.

My only critiques of the movie are:
    1. It should’ve been made clear immediately in the movie that she was NOT 14 when they started dating or when she moved in. It’s still pretty disturbing to me that a 20 something year old man would be having conversations somewhat frequently with a 14 year old, and it’s also disturbing to me that her parents essentially encouraged this. This is not an excuse, but I believe that the only reason Elvis was interested in Priscilla was because he was likely severely mentally and emotionally affected by the death of his mother for the rest of his life. Priscilla was around 17 or 18 when they started dating and when she went to Graceland for the first time and then moved in. The movie made it seem as if she was 14 when they started dating and when she moved in up until a few minutes of her living at Graceland in the movie. Obviously 18 is extremely young, but keep in mind that this was in the mid 60s and thankfully this is not the norm anymore.
    2. Both of them had affairs. Obviously both are in the wrong for this. Priscilla had an affair with the karate instructor, but it is not mentioned in the movie. Elvis had affairs with some of his costars. Again, both sides were completely in the wrong. Cheating is absolutely disgusting and should never be condoned ever.
    3. I felt like the dialogue could’ve been a lot better. To me the dialogue felt pretty slow and kind of repetitive, but I also kinda liked that for this movie if that makes sense. I absolutely loved the visuals/cinematography and the soundtrack was amazing

They met when she was 14 and he started courting her right then. What you call having frequent conversations was actually courtship of a 14 year old. Priscilla has made it clear that they never had sex until she bacame an adult, but the courtship started right away. The parents did not encourage this, they simply approved of it because as you mentioned, a lot of things were normalized back then. This should not only apply to Elvis but to everyone involved including Priscilla and her parents. Priscilla only cheated on Elvis after many many years of being neglected, oppressed, and cheated on by him which is only natural. I would not say that both of them were in the wrong, only Elvis was, as he was the instigator of what Priscilla eventually did. You can love him as an artist as well as his music but that does not mean that you can excuse his shitty behavior and minimize the abuse that Priscilla suffered. I know it was a different time period and that Elvis was dealing with issues of his own, but what he did was still wrong. I still like his music and acknowledge his talent though, but that’s a different thing. People should learn to separate those two.

Later on in the book (I'm reading it currently) as Priscilla and Elvis were completely alone in his room, she describes how she treated Elvis almost like a child, that he had something very boyish about him. I just find that interesting. And that he wanted to have his room temperature freezing, appearently.

O please....this making Elvis out to be a monster. In a nut shell Elvis was by no means lacking in/for female company. Priscilla was the agressor and in persuit. Elvis was not in love with her, he was in love with having a pure woman who would be his Southern Belle. His true love was June Juanico. Although june n priscilla look nothing alike they have similar features; dark hair, blue eyes. June was not a run around as cilla was/is. Priscilla is trying to rewrite history.

We've heard nothing but Priscilla's side of the story for nearly 50 years, since Elvis died. This despicable woman has lived off the corpse of her dead ex husband for all that time and her stories about Elvis change all the time. Priscilla has become rich and famous because she was married to Elvis Presley for a short time and he should now be allowed to R.I.P.

Just vote? How about "legally file for divorce"? You keep hearing about parents marrying off their teenage daughters who then cannot divorce their shitty older husbands because they're legally too young to sign the divorce papers. If you can get legally married, you should be able to legally file for divorce too. And that's only scratching the surface with these kinds of "relationships".

While Elvis has done questionable things, Elvis and Priscilla were surrounded friends and family. All housewives experience loneliness as their husband is out in the world. If on the fame aspect Priscilla couldn't live a normal life, it makes sense then. A major chunk of the world's female population still become housewives and they experience the same loneliness if not more. It's just weird that this narrative is being pushed as a way to defame Elvis' character when all housewives experience this in some form or the other. And Elvis being Elvis, he always had people around him and so did Priscilla.

Excuse me, she did not grow into adulthood in a "gilded cage". It took her a while after Elvis had died to become an actual adult. Before that, she was still a kid, pampered by wealth and fame, etc, etc.
And it's not a biopic if you just straight up make things up about stuff that aren't in the books. Especially if those things are subjective, derogatory, defaming.
If Elvis was alive today, he would sue for libel, because it is libel.
