How Chinese EV Giant BYD Is Taking On Tesla

- Warren Buffett-backed BYD dethroned Tesla in the fourth quarter of 2023 as the world’s top EV maker, selling more battery-powered vehicles than its U.S. rival. BYD was founded by Wang Chuanfu and started making batteries for mobile phones in the 1990s. By 2003, it pivoted to autos and now has become the top car brand in China, as well as a major producer of batteries for electric vehicles. It’s now aggressively expanding globally, exporting over 240,000 cars across 70 countries last year. Elon Musk said in Tesla's Q4 earnings call that Chinese automakers will "demolish most other car companies in the world" unless regulators step in. With sights set on North America, BYD could try entering the U.S., but faces government opposition. CNBC explores whether BYD can sustain its relentless growth and what's next for this EV juggernaut.

Elon Musk was making fun of them 4 years ago. Now he's asking the us government for protection measures.
In all seriousness, I understand why Musk didn't think of them as competition 4 years ago. When BYD was making ICE cars, their cars were not great, and I've heard stories of safety issues with BYD from the 2010-2018 period.
They started to make better cars when we entered the electric age, and they have their own battery supply so that's a huge advantage. The Han sedan in 2021 really turned it around for BYD in terms of perception and they have been rising ever since.
Elon Musk is not the one calling the US government not to accept Chinese automobile, it is the Big OEM that would lose big time to the BYD of this world. Musk wants Free Trade.
The U.S. will protect the interests of billionaires over that of the general public’s. Who cares about the majority of the population?!
BYD is selling a lot of cars in Mexico. I remember 20 years ago Mexicans used to buy used cars in US border towns because American and Japanese made cars were and still are more expensive in Mexico than in the US. For example, the Honda Accord is about $10K more in Mexico than in the US. Then about 5 years ago Chinese brands started being sold in Mexico and the average middle class and lower middle class Mexicans are buying them left and right. The Mexicans figure, why buy a used American car in Laredo, TX when I can buy a new competitively priced car in Mexico and pay no import tax? Chinese companies are starting to manufacture a lot in Mexico also. Every time my wife and I go to Monterrey we see more and more Chinese people. If the US continues on its "America first and screw the rest of the world" policies Canada and Mexico will probably pivot and foster tighter trade relations with the rest of the world.
Won't happen in Canada, because Canada is a lapdog of the US.

If US companies are nervous maybe they shouldn't be replacing all of their lower cost vehicles with premium SUVs and Trucks
US legacy has simply passed cost increases on to the customer for many decades. That is why they can not build lower cost vehicles.
US automakers are not really competing in the small/compact vehicle segments.
Blame the "light truck" emissions exception, which will hopefully get corrected as EVs become the most practical way forward to meet the toughening standards.
US auto is building SUVs and trucks because those give better margins, precisely because of their higher price. They (except for Tesla) can't compete on EVs, so they seek to recoup their losses on those types of vehicles instead.

As recession fears mount on Wall Street and inflation remains well above the Fed's 2% target, some of the top commentators in markets, business, and economics have been sounding off on just how bad they think the next downturn might be - and how far stocks may have to fall. I need ideas and advice on what investments to make to set myself up for retirement, my goal is to have a portfolio of at least $850k at the age of 60.
For the average citizen, the tactics are rather demanding. In actuality, most of them are effectively completed by experts who possess the necessary knowledge and skill set to carry out such occupations.
It comes down to technique; a downtrend gives you room to focus on the market and grow significantly in the short or long term. While it is easier to make money when the market is rising, a downtrend can still yield high returns if you have the necessary knowledge and skills. For this reason, I have been scaling up during this difficult period by working with an investment advisor; this has been the only way I have raised up to $150K in the last six months.

Because they will completely annihilate competition. They offer so much more for a much lower price. The US is panicking.
The argument that Chinese government overly subsidizes its EVs may not hold. As far as I know, China may give a 10-15% subsidy. Here in California, the state incentive may be between $3.5K to 5.5K, and the Federal may provide up to $7.5K. If you buy an M3 or MY, the total subsidy is about 20%. Unfortunately even without political tensions between Canada and China, it is highly unlikely that BYD and other mainstream Chinese carmakers will export cars to Canada anytime soon. Most car markets across the world such as Australia, SE Asia, Latin America etc follow European safety standards, and since modern Chinese cars are meant for export as well, they are designed to meet those European standards, and with minimal modifications can be sold in all those markets as well. Canadian standards instead follow the US. Not that it is any more or less safe than European standards, but just different enough that it would cost BYD a good amount of time and resources to modify their cars to meet the US standards.
The upshot is the only reason BYD would sell cars in Canada would be they are also planning to enter the US market, and by federalizing their cars for US FMVSS standards, they would also essentially meet all Canadian standards. However, since it is unlikely BYD will enter the US market any time soon, not after what the US did to Huawei and any other Chinese brands considered a threat to "national security", BYD would not waste the time and money to federalize their cars just to sell in Canada.

It’s not right to deprive US consumers the power of choice. Politics catering to corporate and Union interests at the expense of the American consumer.
China is exposing the real mindset of American elites. It is not abt free market as they say, it is abt making profits by suppressing those who have an opportunity to do a bit better than them. Free market my ass😂😂
China's manufacturing industry is a beast. The manufacturing industry in the United States is a dog confined in a cage. China is willing to export cars to the United States, and any car in China is priced lower than in the US or Japanese markets. If the tariffs on cars exported from China to the United States are reduced to the level of Mexico, then the US automotive industry will only have one path to bankruptcy. Millions of Americans will go bankrupt. So, the American automotive industry should thank the cage of tariffs and laws.

thats why u compete@@mtgibbs
@@user-oc5ry8pp1p Competition doesn't really work when the other side has a thumb on the scale. For example, the Chinese are much more organized, less concerned about short term individual profit, and have much different labor conditions than we do here. We could do a lot better, but the people who run our companies and the elected officials from both sides are more concerned about their own interests and short term gains and elections than the end game.

They already started, didnt Gina Raimondo just said on CNN that somehow China “can stop all the Chinese EV running on the highway in US” if they let the Americans to buy too many Chinese EVs? How reliable is BYD ?
What about battery replacement costs ?
Wait, if they are good, safe and cheap then where is the problem? I think competition will help with innovation and pricing and that's a benefit for the consumers.

@@MichaelSmith-em7pv : that's also why China banned foreign battery competitors since 2015 -- China's local battery makers couldn't compete. China forced foreign competitors to give up IPR in exchange for access to their market (illegal under China's WTO obligation) and cut all subsidies to EVs with foreign batteries to ensure they couldn't compete. There are people in the US either love or hate EVs, there are people either love or hate Chinese cars. Just bring BYDs in, let the people do what they want.
I think no matter who you are or what ethnicity you come from, people don't care about brand but as long as they're high quality and cheap, they will go for it, NO MATTER WHAT BRAND OR PRODUCTS THEY ARE. Sure, there are always a few that choose only a specific brand or choose not to buy anything Chinese, but again...I believe that's just a small percentage of people. But I believe a majority don't give a damm and as long as the cars are high quality and fit their budget, they will go for it.
I am not surprised American will shout Anti China hate speech on the street and later drive home with his beloved BYD ev car...

I can afford to buy new BYD car if it is here is USA ,However at now I can only have the choice to buy a used car with 100,000 mileage.
If the US impose tariffs, those tariffs have to be paid by American consumers. If you take climate change seriously, each cheap EV that enters the US market is a good thing. Cheaper cars also mean cheaper insurance, because it is cheap to replace a damaged car.
Grow up. E.V.s were never about climate change. It was always about grifting billions out of the green agenda by a handful of insiders
They only have to pay those fees if they make the cars outside of the USA. If they build byds in the USA they wouldn’t be as cheap as they are in China due to higher labor costs also the Chinese government subsidies BYD massively in China which gives people a false impression on prices. BYD won’t do well in the US and will fail bc they can’t even make a profit in China where they are given massive amounts of subsidies.
@@WhiteOwlOnFire_XXXLargely true. Paradoxically, the more "succesful' BYD would be in the U.S. (i.e. the more cars it sells) would actually result in the CCP having to subsidize millions of American drivers
@@WhiteOwlOnFire_XXX You are exactly right.
If you take climate change seriously, you dont buy new car, but old one, preferably diesel and keep it running into foreseeable future, while making your own fuel from oil plants. Parts are possible to make your self since tech is simple and communities grow around keeping them going millions of km's, while good ev can go only 10 years top before its ready to be scrapped as the battery replacement costs more than cars value. Also no special steels, just take broken washing machine and weld a patch from sheet metal. Insurance is cheaper since resale value is next to nothing, but so it purchase price and sheet metal is far cheaper than replacing the whole car cause someone kicked football on the front bumper that houses the 1500€ adaptive cruise control sensor.
Cheap as in Chinese cheap EV's dont last, can easily catch on fire due poor quality, emitting toxic fumes, so yeah very environmentally friendly to burn them and recycling is very expensive when just one cell causing thermal runaway in recycling yard can light the 150tons of batteries with no way to put them out other than let them burn out...

I thought it was the Government's job to make sure consumers are not getting ripped off by greedy corporations?
but here we are, punishing companies that offer low-priced vehicles by imposing tariffs on them, denying consumers an opportunity to buy at lower prices.
Your government surely works for their election fund sponsors, not ordinary people.😂😂
The US import tariff on BYD electric is probably offsetting the Communist Party subsidy. Fair enough.
It’s called lobbying and corruption
Lol The American government does NOT work for the American people. Sorry, but your tax dollars - BILLIONS of it - are being spent to fund war instead of feeding and housing your people, let alone giving them affordable cars.
The government also has to make sure their local auto industry that employs so many people doesn't collapse.
That factory announced in Brazil is actually a purchase of a decomissioned Ford plant. They're literally filling a void left by Ford when it bailed on the country.
This is the only article I came across which speaks positively about BYD.. .though they are struggling all over... I'm sure CNBC has a really good kick back from them... they tried launching in India but failed... of course when they mentioned the stock market and how they have grown since acquisition(part) by Warren Buffet... However.. this article is definitely some kind of damage control cause since past 5 days BYD stocks have been going downhill... why do these media houses make it so obvious... LuL
In China, the stock market is only a platform used to provide financing services to real industries. Don't pay too much attention to changes in stock prices, it doesn't mean much. The United States cannot compete with China in manufacturing precisely because the returns from financial capital are far greater than the returns from real industries. In the end, it will only hollow out the industry.
