I spent far too long hitchhiking around Canada in my early 20s. Got rides with dozens of truckers, some of them drove me over a full day. In all those rides, all but 2 were incredibly respectful towards me, and most were worried about my safety. I never asked for anything but a ride, but even if I insisted I had food in my pack and at least a little money on me, I'd often part ways with them with a full stomach and some cash shoved in my hand. In my limited experience, truckers are generally decent, solid people who just want to be about their business and go home. But they also don't fuck around.
My great uncles were truckers, and my mother made sure to raise me to respect them. They work their butts off and some, would give you the shirts off their backs. Both of my great uncles were like that, and I feel so bad that they were never given decent dental insurance. They could give kids nightmares.... But they were the nicest guys.

They are great guys. When I was a teenager I had access to a CB Radio owned by the owner of the service station. I asked if I could use it and he said sure, he knew I had to wait for my brother to get done so we could go home (my job ended before his did) and at first it seemed odd but I was talking to people all over the world. What an amazing experience that was. I talked to the truckers passing through our state headed to Canada or whatever destination and they'd ask me questions and one driver asked a question my brother didn't like and he grabbed the mic and said she's 16 and she's talking to you with my permission. He apologized and the conversation continued. One guy came on and said I appreciate you talking to me the other night, I damn near fell asleep til you told that story. You had me chuckling that entire half hour to the depot. When my tin can of a car was road worthy I told all the guys on the CB and they said they'd keep an eye on me "jail bait." We all had to have a handle. Well they took care of me because I have a lead foot. Truckers blocked the cops on 3 separate occasions to save me tickets. I thanked them and told them that I wouldn't be speaking to them and the equipment was too expensive for me. I miss those guys. They are great guys and gals.

Truckers used to have a solid community but it’s dwindling. It’s still around but not as solid. I used to be OTR but now I’m a port truck driver. Inside the ports, every trucker becomes each others enemies lol Constantly battling to get in front of each other because the lines can be crazy long. Worst thing I’ve seen so far is 2 truckers physically fighting each other because one thought he was cutting him in line lol😂

truckers are not the Gods of the Road. There is a legal merge point where two lanes of traffic flow to. Lining up before that just pushes the traffic further back. THIS is the law in most US states, not where truckers decide to make it.

5 years ago a truck driver helped me cross the border from Russia to Georgia. Militarized border with the army. War zone!! He had cigars, Cuban cigars, I gave him two and he told me: take two more cigars and give them to the military, tell them I sent you. Thanks to him I can leave and enter the country and legalize my immigration statuses. We still talk and it was over 6 years ago. Respect for truckers

My dad was a truck driver and he told me that Turkish truck drivers have a really good safety system, when there is a lot of them on a parking lot doing their rest, 2 guys sit outside and watch the trucks for potential petrol thieves and such, and they switch every 1 hour. Truckers are like bikers they keep an eye for each other.
I am so appreciative of truckers that force the merge and don’t allow people to cut the line. It means we all get home sooo much quicker. Truckers are some of my favorite peoples.

Well in Montgomery AL I had an idiot like the man with the bat. Several truck drivers went to the man's car and lifted it up on it side and went back to work. The man asked for help from other drivers. We went to work and this man was there for over an hour and a officer asked what happened. he said a big wind turned his vehicle over. The officers laughed because the tape with what happened was in their office. They put a strap on his vehicle and turned it upright.
I drive for a living and I absolutely hate these type of people who just can't wait and are always in a rush and trying to get around and cutting off people.

Do not mess with my truckers, I have much respect for them. I was a young kid driving cross country for the first time and was flying down the highway in Pennsylvania when I had to slow down because several truckers had blocked the way and were driving the speed limit. I was frustrated of course. but a few seconds later I saw that highway patrol had laid out a speed trap. If it were not for them I (and a few other folks) would have been pulled over. Ever since that happened I've appreciated and watched out for them.
I live in Pennsylvania and Mississippi thoughout the year and truckers along 81 in PA are HORRIBLE and notorious for doing this. Truckers should ALWAYS leave the left lane clear at ALL times unless they are passing another slower car at a decent rate of speed relative to the slower car. PennDOT had to pass laws due specifically to these unintelligent truckers in your story. Them "saving" you from a speed trap is slowing everyone else down who would have happily drove 73mph in a 65 mph down interstate 81 and never been pulled over. Truckers are awesome, but they are complete moronic idiots if they are blocking the entire road due to a speed trap, which then causes traffic to back up, hence Pennsylvania's horrible interstate system. It's sad when Mississippi is doing something better.
Me too. Truckers are the best drivers on the road. They will look out for you. I was driving alone from Detroit to Chicago and a big thunderstorm hit. I could barely see due to the heavy rain and decided to drive behind a truck to keep the wind and rain to a minimum. Another trucker drove behind me at a safe distance. I stayed within the speed limit with these 2 trucks and got all the way back to Chicago safely, thanks to these two folks. When they turned off, they both gave me a thumbs up style honk with their horns. Truckers are the BEST!!

No... F that trucker acting like a Self-proclaimed traffic warden. I was just on a 2,500mile road trip. I hit construction zones where the 2-lane highway reduced to 1-lane. The signage said, "Use Both Lanes to Merge Point Then Zipper". At 1.5 miles away from the physical lane closure, truckers were blocking the lane. I threw my truck into 4WD and went around them on the median grass to get around them. This causes WAY more of a traffic jamb and longer delays than utilizing both lanes and zipper-merging.
Sad part is the yellow shirt will call other friends. And then the violent circle continous. Just don't do the police job and let shoulder pass by. Who cares.

truckers are not the Gods of the Road. There is a legal merge point where two lanes of traffic flow to. Lining up before that just pushes the traffic further back. THIS is the law in most US states, not where truckers decide to make it.

Truckers always try to act like they are highway patrol, and they are not, and cause and start incidents. That trucker was blocking 3 lanes, the truck only gets 1 lane.
5 years ago a truck driver helped me cross the border from Russia to Georgia. Militarized border with the army. War zone!! He had cigars, Cuban cigars, I gave him two and he told me: take two more cigars and give them to the military, tell them I sent you. Thanks to him I can leave and enter the country and legalize my immigration statuses. We still talk and it was over 6 years ago. Respect for truckers

My dad was a truck driver and he told me that Turkish truck drivers have a really good safety system, when there is a lot of them on a parking lot doing their rest, 2 guys sit outside and watch the trucks for potential petrol thieves and such, and they switch every 1 hour. Truckers are like bikers they keep an eye for each other.
Truckers in the UK do this all the time. People always trying to push their way through.

Well in Montgomery AL I had an idiot like the man with the bat. Several truck drivers went to the man's car and lifted it up on it side and went back to work. The man asked for help from other drivers. We went to work and this man was there for over an hour and a officer asked what happened. he said a big wind turned his vehicle over. The officers laughed because the tape with what happened was in their office. They put a strap on his vehicle and turned it upright.

Do not mess with my truckers, I have much respect for them. I was a young kid driving cross country for the first time and was flying down the highway in Pennsylvania when I had to slow down because several truckers had blocked the way and were driving the speed limit. I was frustrated of course. but a few seconds later I saw that highway patrol had laid out a speed trap. If it were not for them I (and a few other folks) would have been pulled over. Ever since that happened I've appreciated and watched out for them.

I live in Pennsylvania and Mississippi thoughout the year and truckers along 81 in PA are HORRIBLE and notorious for doing this. Truckers should ALWAYS leave the left lane clear at ALL times unless they are passing another slower car at a decent rate of speed relative to the slower car. PennDOT had to pass laws due specifically to these unintelligent truckers in your story. Them "saving" you from a speed trap is slowing everyone else down who would have happily drove 73mph in a 65 mph down interstate 81 and never been pulled over. Truckers are awesome, but they are complete moronic idiots if they are blocking the entire road due to a speed trap, which then causes traffic to back up, hence Pennsylvania's horrible interstate system. It's sad when Mississippi is doing something better.

Me too. Truckers are the best drivers on the road. They will look out for you. I was driving alone from Detroit to Chicago and a big thunderstorm hit. I could barely see due to the heavy rain and decided to drive behind a truck to keep the wind and rain to a minimum. Another trucker drove behind me at a safe distance. I stayed within the speed limit with these 2 trucks and got all the way back to Chicago safely, thanks to these two folks. When they turned off, they both gave me a thumbs up style honk with their horns. Truckers are the BEST!!

I was just on a 2,500mile road trip. I hit construction zones where the 2-lane highway reduced to 1-lane. The signage said, "Use Both Lanes to Merge Point Then Zipper". At 1.5 miles away from the physical lane closure, truckers were blocking the lane. I threw my truck into 4WD and went around them on the median grass to get around them. This causes WAY more of a traffic jamb and longer delays than utilizing both lanes and zipper-merging.
Driving a truck is no walk in the park when you gotta deal with these clowns.
