Real eggs have the air space and are supposed to float semi or stand alittle not at the bottom the one at the bottom is supposed to be thrown away it's man made egg

Everybody is quick to tell you this method but none of them tell you how it will make your eggs go bad. Only test the eggs you plan on making that day. As water will ruin the protective enamel of the egg and cause it to go bad very quick.

I was curious about this. I have a bunch of quail eggs that I tested and several floated and most sunk. I boiled the sunken eggs and placed the "floaters" in the fridge. If I crack open the floaters and they don't smell bad, can they still be eaten?

The egg is rotten if it floats because rotten eggs have rotting gas bubble. The bubble gets bigger over time until its rotten

Here in Russia we test them just shaking in the hand and feeling is any vibration inside or not. The more air inside means more vibration level and more older egg.
