Reacher Differences From Tom Cruise's Movies

  • Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series is one of the biggest and most popular book series of all times, with them amassing over 100 million readers and having a whopping 24 books in total. The books are so popular that they warranted two movie adaptations starring the one and only Tom Cruise, but although they were overall well received, die hard fans of the books did have their own little nitpicks. With the movies coming to a halt, Child pivoted his creation to the small screen with Amazon picking up the tite and converting it into a TV series. To do this they made a number of changes from what we saw in the movies, and no we are not just talking about casting.
    In this video we will take a look at the biggest and most notable differences between the movies and the show and how they both compare to the books. We will discuss how the casting of Ritchson makes for a more book friendly version of the character, how the series is more violent and takes greater ‘risks’, how the character’s traits have changed in the series from what they were in the movies, how the longer run time allows the series to have a better pacing and allow for more character development and plot setup, how the series actually moves away to other books in the franchise, the character backstory, and just some cool general pieces of trivia that may have been of interest to you. This is the biggest differences between the Reacher movies and series!
    What did you make of this video? Any differences we missed? Which version of Reacher do you prefer? Let us know in the comments below and make sure to subscribe to the channel today for all this and more!

    The role of Reacher was tailor made for Alan Ritchson. He is well spoken, but his physical presence is perfect for the character. The back story shows Reacher as a child having to defend what he believes is right. A man scarred by countless battles , unwilling to compromise. Hopefully, we will see more from this character.

      Sadly history is full of big names miscast to get bums on seats, such as Sean Bean in the Sharpe franchise, when Sharpe was a black haired Londoner, Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon in the Da Vinci Code etc, described as an Olympic level swimmer who did several laps of his pool a day. Cruise is just another example of casting to sell a movie, not because he remotely looks like the character.

    • @kuyt20
      @kuyt20 Před 10 měsíci +15

      @@forMacguyver Hollywood does this all the time. But to be fair, they sometimes managed to make it work. Jason Bourne was supposed to be tall, well above 6-feet in the books while Matt Damon is barely 5'10". Wolverine was supposed to be 5'3" in the books and not some huge intimidating figure like Hugh Jackman's 6'3", the danger regarding him coming from how vicious and deadly he was for someone with such a small frame, hence the name Wolverine. But hey they made it work with Jackman too. So sometimes, not trying to follow the source material to the letter can work well too.
      Its all personal preference in the end but still, regarding Reacher, I find that casting a smaller guy like Cruise creates an extra layer of danger and uncertainty for the character with regards to physical confrontation; which makes the fights more interesting rather than just having the usual "huge bulky guy kicks everyone's ass....The End". But that's just my opinion.

There's an arguably a cruel/mocking look in his eyes to go with it, and if you were in that situation and your mental antennae were tuned anywhere near reality, you'd realize that that was the time to start apologizing profusely for anything you might have ever done to piss this guy off.

    My favorite aspect of the first Mission: Impossible film is you can count the number of shots fired on one hand. It's such economical action. I liked M:I II well enough, but John Woo's gun-crazy usual was an unwelcome contrast to me.
    The first Jack Reacher film was what I'd have liked for an M:I sequel. It's smart, yet also something different since there were no snipers in Mission.
    So, working head canon: M:I II established they don't make it easy for Ethan to take vacations. From time to time ever since, he borrows a name from an AWOL Military Policeman in hopes no one'll notice.
    It just might hold up! Say Ethan disappears from the IMF once a year to give himself vacations. Usually, they're peaceful. Twice, though, his alias gets him caught up working cases, and those are the two Jack Reacher movies!
    To take this further over the top, let's have a crossover where the real Reacher hunts down Hunt! Jack wants to know who's impersonating him and why!

    Alan Ritchson nails the character in every respect. The technical errors of the Amazon writers adapting Child's work in season 1 turn Reacher's strength into plot armor, taking 3ft crowbars, directly to the face, from a fully grown male, without blocking it even slightly, is the opposite of reality. And Reacher's intelligence is just "plot intelligence." Reacher jumping to the conclusion of 85grain 9mm being subsonic is the opposite of reality. Lighting gasoline with a cigarette on purpose is the opposite of reality. I hope they get different technical consultants for season 2.

    • @bradpilon1031

      yeah the show's shortcomings are the technical details and the fights where the plot demands it seem closer than it should be. I liked every aspect of that house scene up until it was Reacher vs Physco half-pint. that was a really bad fight. I also didn't like the fight where Reacher let himself get held at gunpoint. the dude has had great spatial and situational awareness up until that point but "oops i just accidentally kicked him next to his gun and backed off instead of pressing him."
      Crushing the phone might be plausible i suppose. bit rude to do it right next to your sleeping lover who is one of 3 people with the number though.
      I like the protagonists in the Series far more than the first book (Reacher is a fuckboi and Roscoe is a sex toy) some of the antagonists in the book were better (granted i am only 300 pages in, Baker is actually a competent, sneaky devil...) The dialogue is better (everybody speaks the exact same way in the book, right? OK.) the series just feels far more refined than the book does. it is lacking in the same way that most action series are, technical details and plot-induced bad choreography.
      it does details better than a lot of action series though, for instance the shootout at the motel. the aim was plot contrived but Reacher has one magazine in his DE. in the books it is loaded with .44 magnum, which is an 8 round mag. he fires 8 shots before he is empty.

  • @SaftonYT
    @SaftonYT Před 3 měsíci

    I nominally prefer the Alan Ritchson depiction of the character, but I feel I should throw some love to Tom Cruise here.
    For what it's worth, Lee Child made it clear back in the day during the first initial outcry regarding Tom Cruise's casting that Reacher's physical size isn't and never was some indelible, core feature of the character. Instead, when first coming up with the character of Jack Reacher, Child wanted to come up with a way to further depict Jack's force-of-will, imposing aura, menacing danger, and sheer presence he gives off when entering a room. Making Jack a towering hulk was a convenient way to personify those intangible traits for readers; it's basically a narrative shortcut. Lee made it clear that the important parts of Reacher's character is not his size but rather those aforementioned personality traits and he was fully confident that Tom Cruise would be able to portray these traits in ways other than his physicality, given his acting chops.
    Child never really recanted his position by saying that Tom was a poor choice or what have you... but he *did* later admit that he had come to understand why many fans were initially distraught and now acknowledged how an actor's physical build could be important in helping to make or break certain narrative sequences in a live-action context.
    For what it's worth, I think Tom did a very serviceable job. He immersed himself wholeheartedly into the role of Reacher just like he does every role (yes, some call it overacting) and brought a certain degree of... gravitas to the whole thing. There are a couple of cheesy scenes, but I think a bit of that can be blamed on that script-writing rather than Tom himself. More importantly, he also has several fantastic scenes which to this day still give me goosebumps when I rewatch them -- especially in the first film.
    Again, I tend to prefer Ritchson overall and I think Season 1 of the show is by far the best of all the Jack Reacher live-action media that's been released. But Tom Cruise's portrayal is sometimes unfairly maligned IMO.

    I loved the movies and am a huge fan of Tom Cruise, but I agree with this assessment. Ritchson’s portrayal of Reacher was really believable. I loved how the series had time for some of the dry, non-threatening-in-a-completely-threatening-way interactions that the book Reacher always has with the minor enemies he encounters along the way.

    SR: makes jokes about runtime and then adds the line "depending on how you measure" twice for no reason other than runtime.

      It's in every issue of Muscle Mag! K8 or the GOAT swore by it and made shakes from pizza 20 times a day!

    I enjoyed the movies immensely, and they persuaded me to read the novels which I enjoyed even more. I think the show was a much better adaptation of the books and the character; however I recognize part of this was due to the time that a show allows for story telling. I did like that the show also made some changes from the book, so that there were still some surprises in the end. Alan Ritchson is Reacher in my mind, and I really hope to see a continuation of the show in the future.
