Best ever one i have seen, i shall be taking you up on this approach mate - well done the man
One of the best videos on this job found on youtube! Thanks.
Thank you
Great job...well done.
Thanks for posting this very informative video. I like the mix you use (with the reason for) and now I am ready to give it a go
Ok good luck any questions just ask
I've been researching the best way to point up a new patio for hours and by far i believe this is the best way, so just wanted to say a huge thanks mate!

A proper job
Competent DIY'er here - best video I've seen on this by far. Just redoing my patio - I did it three years ago and the pointing failed (used flow) - going to do it properly this time! Why I never used a tuck pointer is beyond me and I love the slide to put your cement on - great idea to keep the work area clean.
Thank you for your kind words
Any advice needed just ask away
I use a piece of old visqueen
I've done a few videos on pointing flags

Watch your vid ,the sheet was a great idea,I used 2 pieces of hardboard which speeded the job up,thanks again.
Thanks your welcome
Hi, felt more relaxed watching your video. Novice here just had a patio laid (nightmare) all the dark grey mortar is already needing more filling. Do l scrap it all out and could you tell me where l would get a dark colour grey filler please? Any advice grateful
I like the way you spoon it in straight off the plastic sheet.
Plus the lime thing.
I have a load to do.
If I can be of any help, please send a wattsapp of your project and I will help were needed
@@GMTpointingspecialistsltd You know I might just do that - having just laid 20SQM of mixed Limestone / Sandstone with more to do. Gaps 10-15mm ish some wider. Will Whatsapp you cheers as so many videos on this subject - brush in seems lazy and short term with pointing the best way - was gonna go for a hard 3:1 mix but looks like this may crack. Will Whatsapp now. Cheers bud.
3:1 sand and cement is as hard as the flags has no room for movement, I'd never recommend it
@@GMTpointingspecialistsltd I used the 5:1:1 Mix as advised so thank you for the advice. Looks great. Much appreciated.
I used a dry mix mate 4 to 1...and really compacted it in....that was 3 tears ago still looks really good...might try it your way 😊
If it still looks good I wouldn't touch it tbh
@GMTpointingspecialistsltd I see people using that brush in easy grout or resin ...my mate used it lasted less than 12 months 😅😅
@davegill7614 yeah the resin stuff I've used you still have to push it down force it into the joints people just brush it in and leave it
@GMTpointingspecialistsltd a cheaper way I guess...cause to grind out old stuff hoover out the joints and repoint is 3 or 4 days work on your own
Similar method to myself
A good pointer 👉🏻👉🏻👉🏻👉🏻👉🏻
Thank you always nice to here from a fellow pro
What type of lime are you using please.
Do you add any plastisicers?
Great videos thank you
Hi this is a hydrated lime
No you don't use a plasticiser the lime is the plastisicer
This is a good video. It is short and informative.
Also the patio is similar to ours.
Can the mortar mix be bought already made?
I mix my own so I know it's accurate
You will be able to get the sand and hydrated lime mixed but you will still need to add the cement
It's easy to mix
Just mix all ingredients dry first
@@GMTpointingspecialistsltd thanks for letting me know 👍
I'm looking at doing the same job (and a bit of brick pointing). Can you recommend what trowels to get? Are they round or flat?
Flat finger trowels I use
Would that mix be ok for sand stone paving?
Would it stand up to people using a pressure water?
Looks great
Yeah you should never pressure wash pointing
Use a bio wash to clean most of it first and then if need be a light pressure wash
Would using the new brush-in resin jointing mixes on the market such as Marshalls Weatherpoint 365 not make this job far more easier Glenn, or are they not up to much?
The gaps on the flags were about 25 to 30 mm
By about 50 mm that would of cost a fortune and there resin based
I don't know how much flex they give and don't know how they flex and I've seen some of them go white and patchy
With my mix it's flexible as the flags are in the sun most of the day
@@GMTpointingspecialistsltd thanks Glenn 👍
your using building sand for both laying flags on top and pointing can or should you use sharp sand ?
You should use sharp sand to lay
I'm pointing in building but if the joints are wide I add 1 sharpsand into my pointing mix
Nice video!! The mix looks quite dry-ish / stiff. Is it stiffer than a bricklaying mortar mix?
Yes much stiffer not to stain the flags
With pointing you dampen the joints rather than the mix
A brickies mix is really wet so the bricks don't suck all the moisture from the mix
I’m thick so when you say 5:1:1 mix is that five lime on cement and one sand? 🤔 I’ve got my sandstone patio to sort this summer and I’ll start by chipping out the old pointing which hasn’t really lasted that well and plan to pack in the new pointing so it actually does last!
5 sand
1 cement
1 hydrated lime
@@GMTpointingspecialistsltd 🤣🤣🤣 I said I was thick! Thanks mate appreciate you taking the time to reply and make the video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@user-fv8rn4gi3x no problem it's always better to ask first
I've done a few videos on pointing flags so take a look at them
Any other questions feel free to ask
Thanks for the very informative video. What is the mix ratio please?
I would need to see a picture of what you are going to repoint
This is a
1 hydrated lime
1 opc
5 building sand
1 sharp sand
For the wider joints
This mix is for walking on only and its in full sun so it allows small movement and vibration
If you wattsapp me some pictures I could let you know what mix I'd use on yours
It's free
Just goigle gmt pointing specialists ltd and contact me that way if you need the help
Would a 3-1 mix work (sand / hydrated lime) or is adding cement a must?
Hydrated lime is used as a plastersizer. I wouldn't recommend it
5:1:1. mix? What is that please. I’m about to do my own patio and I saw this was for beginners but you didn’t explain. What sand do you use? How much water in the mix? How do you stop staining of the slabs?
I've done 3 or 4 videos on the subject
Depends on the width of the joint
5 is sand building or grit sand
1 is hydrated lime
1 is ordenary portland cement
Wet the joints not the full flag
Semi dry mix so not to stain the flags
Does this hold up any better than 3 or 4 to 1 for yearly jet washing?
You should never jet wash the joints on any flags
Jet washing causes loads of problems
I use a bio wash and a soft brush to clean my flags
A 3:1 is as hard as the flags and can destroy your flags you want the pointing to be sacrificial
Hi, great video, what ratio did you use here? You did of course mentioned this ratio 5:5:1 but could you be more specific please as to the ingredients, sharp sand or fine sand, lime (which lime, NHL 3.5, or 5)? Would you recommend lime instead of cement when laying patio and pointing. I have seen people using cement and Silka Fast fix all weather sand to do the pointing. Would you recommend these product over lime when laying Indian patio stones? Many thanks.
I'm not a fan of any resin products that you use a hose pipe to put in
I used 5 sand 1 cement 1 hydrated lime
Check what hydrated lime you are using as I use the same size bucket to mix the sand lime and cement
@@GMTpointingspecialistsltd ok thanks
Is that 5 building sand or sharp sand pls?
@@xxwalhalaxxmozza7415 building but you can use sharp if you want a rough finish or it's wide joints
@@GMTpointingspecialistsltd I've got some kiln dried sand left over from block paving. There was a nick in the bag and its gone damp. Could I use this rather than throw it away?
So no water in the actual mix? Just wet the joint?
No, you wet the joints and have minimal water in the mix
You don't want a wet mix as it can shrink and crack, and it takes ages to go of enough to strike off
Beautiful work, I've got a patio where the joints have been blasted with a jet wash so have a 1-3cm deep gap. I was thinking of either doing this or using flow point, do you think that would work or which would be better? And would you still grind out the remaining mortar?
Hi, thank you
I never recommend pressure washing a patio
There are plenty of chemicals out there that can clean them
Without damaging your pointing
I'd grind it out and start again
Do it properly, try and go as deep as the flag so you get a good depth of pointing in
Thank you, could I just use building and sharp sand from b&q? and between the 3 day misting with water how often should I do it and should I put down tarp to keep moisture in? Thanks for your advice
@_Blu-jay yes but depends how gritty you want the pointing
Builders merchants will have sand in small bags if you have one near you
Keep misting everything it starts to dry out
Hi keep it up you are doing a great job and having fun making some brilliant videos superstar Ali Walsall west midlands england junction 10 m6 Walsall churckery
Thank you so much 😁
Apologies if this sounds stupid, but could I use lime putty instead of hydrated?
Putty is very soft yes you can use it but wouldn't last a winter
Is it important that the weight of lime equals the weight of cement rather than equal volume?
No it's done by volume
Check your data sheet it's free online they all say volume
What is the mortar pad made from?
It's just a bit of visqueen
Hi Glen. I’ve got an old bag of NHL 3.5 lying around. Could this be used instead of hydrated?
Nhl is mixed with sand and water only
Hydrated lime is mixed with cement
@@GMTpointingspecialistsltd thanks been out and bought some hydrated lime today. Following your advice and going with the 1:1:5, but with 4 building and one sharp due to joint size
Perfect
semi dry mix
Let me know how you get on
@@GMTpointingspecialistsltd looking good. Dynamic is a bit different due to massive joints on old Yorkstone crazy paving. Will hopefully hold up with driveway traffic too. Thanks again
@jmabarker1 no problem give it to set and cure before driving over it
how do you remove the mortar stains from the stones after the pointing has dried?
Use a damp sponge the same day you point it
When the pointing has gone off a bit
The overspill will be a thin layer so will come off with a clean sponge
is brick acid suitable if damp sponge won't remove mortar?
@@GMTpointingspecialistsltd
Could you explain the 5:1:1, was that sand: cement:lime or sharp sand: building sand:lime?
Depending on the size of gaps in the flags
5 sand mix of sharp and soft
1 cement
1 hydrated lime
Thanks, that's most helpful.
Could you not just use 5 Sharp sand ?
Or would that then be 2.5 Sharp sand & 2.5 Soft sand mixed…..
I have 5mm gaps.
Great vid by the way, will be on this after reply 🤞
Can I ask you a question please ... I got a workman / gardener out to put pavers down as a shed base. I am.very upset as I didnt like the finish. To cut corners (cost for workman) he reused pavers. I wish I had watched what he put as base 😕 but I think.its just gravel dust no weed barrier underneath. Then I went out after 1 hr or perhaps less as he was rushing so much to find the pavers (6ft x 6ft) gappy in-between. I asked why he hadn't grouted, said didnt need it ???? I felt it needed something like paving sand at very least. Do you agree that a shed base doesn't need to be grouted or filled in any way 🤔. I was going to get workman to do more jobs but the impression was I was low on his priority list and was too busy atm to fit me in and I had to work around him an chase him.up. I have lost faith in tradespeople now. Had other quote prior to.this and the two workmen looked miserable, like I have seen happier folk at funerals. So am going to do other jobs myself now. Just need clarity on if grouting or paving sand should be used for pavers going under a shed please.
Without inspecting the job I can't comment
But I would always put sand on block paving to reduce weeds but not stop them
If tradesmen are busy they are worth waiting for
Use trading standards approved list for tradesmen
Great video...what is the 5:1:1 mix made up of ?
It's 5 sand. You can do a mix of building sand and sharp sand depending on the size of joints
1 hydrated lime
1 ordinary portland cement
Don't use multicem
@@GMTpointingspecialistsltd Thanks.
@daveloubser no problem if you have any other questions, feel free to ask
Good luck with your project
Hi - great video thanks. How much water do you use?
It all depends on how big a mix you make
Depends on how damp the sand is
The best way is mix dry then take a bucket of mix out add water then put your dry mix back in so you don't make it to wet
Thanks. Also I have some slightly wobbly slabs and brick sets within the patio. I take it I should re bed them. Just wondering what mix of mortar should I use to set them on - thanks
@rosgallagher lift the flag
clean the back of it
Remove a good 40 to 50mm the do a 4: 1 sharp sand cement mix
Then paint a slurry mix or either cement and water to key the flag
Or you can buy a flag slurry to coat the back
thanks ….. how do I do a slurry mix
@rosgallagher add water to cement make it into a paste and paint the back of the flag it helps it stick you can add sbr but depends on the flag type
What’s the actual mix of the 5.1.1
1 hydrated lime
1 ordinery portland cement NOT multicem
5 sand can be a mix of building and sharp
This mix is for flags in full sun so the flags can expand and contract
Nice video. I am at this stage with my pavers now and I have a few questions which I hope you can help with:
1. Can I do this with moist pavers? It's been raining here in Sydney.
2. Can I use a pre-mixed lime mortar mix? doesn't this wash off when there is water? I used sand cement before and they wash off and left stains on my pavers.
3. Can I compact the flags on flexible bedding (sand) before (or after) pointing?
Thanks
Hi because of the temperature over there you would need to talk to local contractors they will let you know the best mix to use
Just make sure the heat doesn't dry out the mix to quick
Any mortar that goes on the flags wipe of with a clean damp sponge
I put this video up to show if you use the plastic sheet very little mortar goes on the flags
What about a cement gun
They are not for me
To mix mortar you need
The correct amount of lime cement and sand and water
To go through a gun
You need to add more water or a washing up liquid
This changes the strength and can add salts into the mix
If they were any good I'd use one
As all I do is pointing
Nice job chap, but what a faff! I am wondering why you didn't use a mortar gun. You can squeeze it right to the bottom of the void with minimal mess, then just tidy up the surface as you go along. I had to repoint an old Cotswold stone fire place at home a few years ago. Some of the 200 year old lime mortar had become loose and powdery. I raked the mortar, sometimes sinking 6 inches into the joint as it was like chalk dust in places. Then I'm thinking, this is gonna take the next 2 weekends to re-mortar this lot. Away we go, flipping lime mortar into 6 inch deep gaps. After 2 hours I had only finished re-mortaring around half a square metre. Off to Screwfix, picked up a mortar gun, loaded it with lime mortar and bosh, whole job done buy mid afternoon. One tip, I kept an old spray bottle with some washing up liquid handy to spray into the mortar gun before loading it up. That makes the mortar to come out more easily. Hope this helps some of you.
Where do I start
The purpose of my videos are to show people the correct way to do pointing
The reason I don't use a mortar gun
Is you have to make the mix too wet which can remove the lime and cement from the sand
And fills the void up with gaps it stays wetter longer and if you stand on it you make more mess
The lime you repointed the fire place with should of been packed out in stages of 20mm at a time with lime pins or slate left 20mm shy to go of minimum of 24 hrs
Please don't ever put washing up liquid in a gun to help the lime go through as this contains salt which will contaminate the lime and cause salts to form on the surface
You need to keep the wall damp for minimum of 4 days to stop it drying out to quick
If you would like to know how to do pure lime mixes I have loads of them on youtube
Hope that helps you but if you would like any help on doing lime pointing properly please feel free to contact me
As I've done this type of work for nearly 30 years if guns were any good I'd use them
Appreciate all of your advice as you are obviously well experienced. Got to say, what I described in my reply is still going strong and looks A1 after 15 years.
@stephenoverthrow2463 yeah but what you described was giving people advice on my channel that I didn't agree with I'm trying to encourage beginners to do it properly and not rush and take short cuts
@@GMTpointingspecialistsltd
Point taken, my apologies.
Good job, but you really should have pvc'd it before you pointed it
Could you tell me what you think the pvc will do ?
Pva doesn't react well in cold weather SBR is much better but
I'm using lime in this mix it's much better than pvc as it's very sticky I've been doing it this way for 20 years
Thanks for the input though but I wouldn't use pvc ever outside
Do you mean pva?
Pva is no good out side
SBR is much better if your just using a sand and cement
I use a lime so no need to use SBR
Great video, please can you tellmi what ingredients you use for the mortar, Did you use a building sand and cement ? You mentioned lime also? Please can you let me know the ratio , Im thinking of getting my patio repainted and this is probable the best method I've seen.
1 hydrated lime
1 cement
5 building sand
If its wide joints add a grit or sharp sand
