Do you know what the difference is between China and US about this? One is direct, the other is indirect ATTACK on a person’s privacy, that includes WITHOUT ANY probable cause. Chris, it might be more helpful to provide the correct registry key with backwards slashes instead of dashes between the different key components, like this: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DataCollection
    That would allow your viewers to copy the key and paste it right into Registry Editor without needing to replace - with \.

    Sorry to bother you on a whole other topic, but I recently installed Manjaro on the same SSD as my Windows 10 OS (Dual Boot) and two days later I installed a new Bios Update for Zen 2 CPUs. Ever since then The Bootmanager for Manjaro is no longer showing up anymore...I can only boot into Windows and Manjaro disappeared in the Boot priority options on the Bios menu too. It still exists on my SSD though (space is still taken). Is there any fix for this other than wiping out the manjaro partition and reinstalling it?

    • @ChrisTitusTech
      @ChrisTitusTech  Před 5 lety +1

      You'd need to reinstall grub but to do that you need to boot into a live CD and fix it there. The easiest way to fix this imo is to use EasyBCD and create a Linux boot menu option in your Windows Boot Loader. neosmart.net/EasyBCD/ is where you get the tool to do this. Here is a how to use EasyBCD guide: www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/257048-dual-boot-windows-7-linux.html

    • @nielsvanaert4746
      @nielsvanaert4746 Před 5 lety

      This can happen sometimes with a BIOS update. The boot partition isn't altered, but all non-default UEFI boot entries are removed. It happens on my Lenovo ThinkPad P52 too, whenever I perform a UEFI / BIOS update, all UEFI entries are removed from the BIOS, except the default entry pointing to BOOT\EFI\BOOTx64.efi. This can be resolved by mounting your (V)FAT(xx) partition and renaming grubx64.efi to BOOTx64.efi (it's usually not case sensitive, but for some firmware it can be...) and you'll never have to worry about that problem again. Caution though: Doing so would cause Microsoft Windows to be unable to boot using the default UEFI entry, but you could chainload Microsoft Windows 10 using grub, by doing the following example (adjustment might be needed, depending on your configuration):
      Create a file called /etc/grub.d/40_windows file:
      menuentry 'Microsoft Windows 10' {
      search --fs-uuid --no-floppy --set=root AABB-CCDD
      chainloader (${root})/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi
      }
      (replace AABB-CCDD with the UUID of your Microsoft Windows partition)
      Run grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/(vendor)/grub.cfg (be sure to overwrite the current grub config file).

    • @dktol56
      @dktol56 Před 5 lety

      Since you're obviously using a recent (AMD) motherboard, you have UEFI firmware, and the firmware/bios update probably nuked the grub boot entry in NVRAM. You can use the efibootmgr utility on a Linux live DVD/USB to add the grub entry back in. Also, if the firmware has a built-in UEFI shell, you can enter setup and drop into the DOS-like shell and add the grub entry there - or just re-install grub again and it will make the NVRAM entry for you. A good place to learn about UEFI is to study Rod Smith's documentation for the rEFInd boot manager at his web site. He's a technical writer, so his docs are excellent. The Wilkipedia pages on UEFI and GPT are also quite useful. I can't emphasize enough that UEFI and GPT work VERY differently than the old BIOS and mbr schemes.

    You can disable the services that report the telemetry, but you cannot actually fully disengage it. It has CEIP under the hood so any time anyone uses a Microsoft Operating system, they have direct access to it whether you turn these services off or not. (It's not recommended, because it screws many things up...)

  • @Wearyman
    @Wearyman Před 5 lety +7

    I honestly got so actively frustrated with Windows 10's behavior AND infuriated at Microsoft deciding in version 1703 that they were just going to start FORCING people to get updates, even people on Pro (like me) that I just said "Fuck this" and completely disabled the Windows Update service. Not just the services.msc service, but I actually went and used my admin power to "Take Ownership" of the Windows Trusted Installer Service and removed all rights to it to anyone or anything but me personally. That's right, not even the SYSTEM can access this service anymore. This means NO windows updates, NO Windows mysteriously turning the update service back on after it was disabled. NOTHING. Windows just... runs. and that's it. I also disabled all the telemetry crap as you have here, stripped out ALL of the microsoft store apps and crap and disabled Cortana in the same way that I disabled Windows Update.
    My Windows 10 is still on 1607 and has not had a patch or update in YEARS. I love it. it runs fast, and I have yet to have a single issue with it. I also use Classic shell because Microsoft can go pound sand with that shitty Win10 menu.
    At this point I keep a copy of the 1607 version installer on a DVD ready to do reinstalls for new PCs. The beauty of it is, with the "Windows as a Service" model, Drivers and other critical things that would be quickly deprecated in older iterations of WIndows will last for YEARS because all Microsoft is doing is tweaking the UI, while the core remains much the same. As long as it says "Windows 10" I'll be juuuuust fine.

    As a bit of a weird aside I have Windows 7 running. So I did a run search for telemetry. I got some weird files from about 2012 onwards. For instance there's a text file called telemetry shutdown time and if I open it I get a number and nothing else. How many times I have shut down the computer? I am not saying that is necessarily bad. But weird. Not that I will be in Windows 7 for much longer anyway - going to Linux and if I need any windows I will run 8.1 [I have the disk] in a VM.

      @@ChrisTitusTech A good solution for making ISO's like this easily is NTLite (both available in Free and Paid edition). I'm not sure whether you're already familiar with it, but I can really recommend it. It can actually remove a lot (if not all) of the spyware settings and make a working ISO image in a matter of 10 - 15 minutes which you can use for at least half a year. On the PC's where I'm FORCED to used Microsoft Windows (unfortunately) I've been using installations, based on media from that on both AMD and Intel machines and it's actually been running more reliable then the average vanilla Microsoft Windows ISO, and I'm not the standard desktop user (using Component Services, ODBC Data Sources, a variety of business VPN clients etc.). No more candy crush in a clean installation, no more cortana etc. Completely removed and gone.

  • @Kneedragon1962
    @Kneedragon1962 Před 5 lety +2

    That's a winner. There was also the De-Bloat thing he pointed out, a couple of weeks ago, which I've used on all my guest Win-10 installs.
    There is a quick and obvious answer to this. Linux.
    There are quite possibly things you need to do, that can only be done in Windows. For that, a dual-boot is one option. Another is VirtualBox, or any one of about 8 other virtual_machine programs. VMware is one example.
    It would be an option to have Windows with VirtualBox in it, and then some version of Linux inside that. Windows is also pretty much making their own built-in virtual_machine, especially for Linux. I ... encourage that, but... How did I put this once before? I don't want to buy a fancy new condom in a fancy new packet, and then tuck the whole thing (still in the wrapper) inside my foreskin to protect it from girl's_germs. I'd prefer to tuck my poor delicate package inside a nice new heavy duty condom to protect it, from what-ever the world decides to throw at it. I am reasonably ok with running Windows inside a virtual machine, inside Linux, as long as I am not doing the majority of my work, or anything I would prefer to keep secret...
    There are a couple of use cases where I'd run Windows, on bare metal. One is if I had some fairly obscure or uncommon piece of hardware. Let's say, as one example, I bought a tv receiver / capture / tuner card. (I know about that one, because I've done it...) Or maybe a new 3d printer. It's not a ubiquitous piece of hardware. There WILL be a Windows driver for it. There's unlikely to be a Linux driver for it.
    Another case, if you're a hard core enthusiast gamer, and the difference between 60 frames / sec and 130 means life & death to you, then have a copy of Windows, on bare metal, and run your gaming on that. Then have a 2nd hard drive (SSD maybe) and run Linux off that. The two don't need to mess with each other at all. This way, you get full performance gaming, and you have a Windows install in case there's something that only can or does work in Windows, but you are free to do most of your day-to-day stuff in Linux. That's not what I would do, but then I'm not a hard-core gamer.
    What I would most avoid doing, is use Windows as my default, to do or to watch or to research anything I wouldn't like my wife to know, or my kids, or my parents, or my local priest, or the local cops. Or the NSA, the CIA or any branch of US civilian or military intelligence. I like to look at a little bit of pawn every now & then. Mostly what I like, would not get me in any real trouble. I'm not into children, animals, dead bodies, pain & torture, urine or scat or anything else like that. I have one (sorta kinda) fetish, which I'm not going to talk about, but there's no particular law against it. My point is, if I had anything I particularly didn't want the world (and the Pope, and the cops) to know about, I really REALLY wouldn't even mention it on or near a Windows box. That's not quite as insecure as posting updates about it on facebook, but you're very much headed in that direction... ANY Linux install, is way more secure in this regard. I would suggest going to DistroWatch, and making a note of maybe the top 20 installs they list, and starting out by trying one of those. If you're not familiar, Ubuntu is one pretty good place to start, and so is Linux Mint. (Which I use and swear by and have for over a decade.)
