  • Do you want to stop Microsoft from spying on you in Windows? Well today I will show you what you can do to stop the spying once and for all. These are relatively easy settings you can change that should stop the telemetry in Windows 10 and 11. Stop big tech from selling your data by not giving them your data to sell.

Due to my job, i have to use Windows 11 but i can assure you when the day is done, my personal machine is a Linux Distribution. Better to use the most up to date version of the browser, normal Firefox, and set it to be as secure as you choose. I'd probably disable rather than delete as if it's missing MS might put it back with default setting, where as if it exists there's a better chance the update will leave it alone. Who know with MS though.

Of course, there is nothing stopping M$ from using alternate sites. There could also be routines buried in the Windows OS which determine "x" site is unavailable, use site "y".

Big tech wants your data with a powerful will. A HOSTS file edit won't stop code that uses TCP to implements its own DNS client to query well-known static IP addresses or gets a list of IP addresses through some other way. What you need in order to block that is a router that can be configured to not allow direct IP connections that weren't resolved by a DNS query. However, you will find that some online programs, file sharing services and games will not run because they rely on their home server telling them which IP address(es) to connect to. The fact that these other popular programs and games need direct IP access also means you open the door for telemetry to use the same methods. Businesses such as banks and hospitals have to go to great lengths to protect privacy, using technologies not reasonably available to home users.

Just an F.Y.I, you can actually edit and re-save the hosts file, without having to copy it elsewhere and then back again. You just have to run notepad as administrator, then click File and open, then navigate to the hosts file and open it. Edit it and then save it. Done. 🙂

I use Windows 10 Enterprise Edition because it has the ability to disable the diagnostic, you can set it to security in GPO. The problem with the hostfile is that it won't work, Windows has the IP's hard-coded in to every servce, so if you really want to block them you have to use the firewall. But if you do that Windows update is not going to work on your system either so you need a local update server. And you forgot smartscreen and automatic sample submission. If you want the safest version of windows, just install the LTSC version or Windows Server.

When giving such advices to turn it off you should also note the features you lose by doing so.
Features are not there just to be nefarious, contrary to most conspiracy theories.
The host file hijack is a legitimate threat to your computer for example. Some malware redirects your traffic through proxies with that, and the windows antivirus is doing a good job of detecting that.

When I read about 10 years ago that Apple had in their new OS a program that was running all the time in the background scanning every single file that you have looking for keywords that were on the band list and when it found them it would actually delete the files and report back to the government that you had text that was not allowed on your computer and a few years later Windows quietly said in a question about this that in Windows 11 and in the Windows 10 update this module is now part of their operating system and cannot be shut down and when it finds anything that is on this incredibly long bad list it immediately deletes the files and reports you to the government and Android did the same thing several years ago which is why many people have switched to alternate OSs.
The idea that China is so bad because they do this and have been doing it for years but the American government does exactly the same thing and no one ever says a word about it.
I had people screaming at me because files were missing from their computers and they were blaming me and I said let me see what files you're talking about and I typed the exact file and I swear to you it literally deleted it within seconds of my saving it.
I thought there was a failure of the drive even though it was new and I swapped out the drive and it did it again and that's when I called Microsoft because I pay for the corporate support package each year and after 3 days of runaround I finally got the answer that yes we're doing the same thing that Apple has been doing and we have the bad list and we have no say about it.
I'm reminded of that song Right Now where one of the guys says our government is doing the bad things that they say only other governments do.
And the Windows 10 update that they did in October broke 30 machines that I had ghost installed the images and they were all identical machines with identical hardware and they ran Windows 10 fine and after the update they all shut off at different times usually within a minute or two of powering on and just turn off for no reason whatsoever
This is Microsoft's way of making you update to hardware that is very specific which worries me quite a bit that they want this very specific hardware
So now I've been scrambling going to Best Buy and buying machines off the shelf and configuring them and copying the personal files over for all of the clients all at my expense and now I have all of these machines all over the country that will cost me 7000 to have shipped back to me and there's nothing I can do with them because they don't support Windows 10 or 11.
So thank you Microsoft you really pounded me in the cornhole

I'm kind of in the middle. There's some data I'm okay with being collected. Hardware specs, data to make sure everything is running smoothly and how Microsoft can use that data to make it better. But that's not why I switch to Linux from time to time, privacy is a nice bonus but the real reason I use Linux from time to time is because even Ubuntu or current GNOME desktops (which I hear is supposed to be the most resource heavy) are faster than Windows especially on junk hardware. But I do care about my privacy, I don't care if a company collects data, but I do want my consent and control over the data I sent, and that is the problem I have with Microsofts way of collecting data, they're getting sneakier about the data they collect at least that's what it feels like.
