Do Upgrading Chipset Drivers Help Performance

  • Does running the most up to date chipset drivers help performance or do the drivers that come with Windows work just fine? That's the question we are answering today. I have to admit, I haven't ran manufacturers drivers since the Nforce chipset. So this should be eye opening for even me.

    Nice video. Years ago with a Ryzen 1800x and a Gigabyte Aorus x370 board, it was a requirement to load the AMD chipset drivers - win10 was missing PCIe and USB drivers required to bring up all features. Since then, chipset drivers ALWAYS come next after a window install.

    I've been on AM4 since 2019, and while I've had a few instances where newer chipset drivers are worth a small performance boost, I've also had instances where newer chipset drivers caused a bunch of problems. Back in 2021-2022 I ended up reverting the AMD chipset driver to an older chipset driver from my motherboard vendors website because the most recent AMD chipset driver caused awful stuttering and framepacing issues in games when using a 1000hz polling frequency on my mouse.
    I've also found that AMD chipset drivers are notorious at failing to install components randomly despite the installer saying it installed successfully, so when you update your AMD chipset drivers you should always check the logs to see if any failed. Sometimes it took me 3 or 4 reboots and multiple attempts for the newer AMD PSP driver to actually install. In summary, updating AMD chipset drivers has been EXTREMELY hit or miss for me.

    • @K31TH3R
      @K31TH3R Před měsícem +3

      The 2006 and 2009 dates on many baked in Microsoft drivers are actually placeholder dates for compatibility purposes so any driver you install for those devices won't fail specifically due to an older date code. While there might be some driver code that is actually as old as 2006 in Win11, it's very likely that most important system drivers that are labeled as 2006 or 2009 have more than likely been rewritten many times since 2006.

    This confirms a lot of what I have suspected and noticed without testing. Unless you are running bleeding edge, most hardware, Intel, Nvidia, AMD are basically standardized at this point. Anything over a year old will have drivers in Microsoft that will run pretty close to whatever is current as the current drivers are pushing more towards whatever new tech the OEMs are pointing you towards. A great example of proving this without doing your hard work is Intel. The Intel graphic cards are new to the industry. Their own early drivers are crap because they had not been in the wild yet and used in a broader context. So, every new update brings a huge performance boost. Compare that to an Nvidia update that essentially brings stabilization unless a new feature is being unlocked.

    I would suggest that you figure out why the .1% lows are so bad before you do anymore testing. Otherwise the tests are meaningless. Since it is fresh windows install, I assume it is inconsistent system latency due to the awful plethora of unnecessary interrupts that oob windows does. Probably the biggest offender is the power service. I'd recommend re-testing the baseline with that service disabled.
