I’m loving the painted backgrounds! You can’t beat the real deal. The animation though looks very digital and flat. Why does the traditional animated films look so much better? Is it the hand painted cels and shooting on film celluloid?

Digital tends to make the images and colors too sharp, too perfect and often too bright. Painted cels has died out, there's no studios who work with the medium anymore so cels, inks and paints are no longer mass-produced. They have their limits too, though, like only a small number of available colors and the process is very cumbersome. We would love to clean animation on paper with either ink or pencil to at least have traditional drawings as a basis, but budget/time constraints rarely allows for this to be achievable.

Matte! Nande? Thanks for answer. The guys at MDHR Studios did a fantastic job with the Cuphead game. Maybe you could do it with the same technique, only in your style.

How can you not lose the pencil under the colors?? thanks for sharing ;)

Hey hey! The paint is transparant enough not to lose the pencil too fast. Only need to redraw them occasionally when the layers of paint get too thick!
