Great video Hugh, I agree with your thoughts on Apple activation locks. If only...
Most repair shops will miss this step. The home button was originally adhered into place. If it’s loose, it can rotate, and this rotating force can snap the cable.

Nice restorations - you got a good deal there. Shame about the iCloud activation locks though. I wonder if there is anything that could be done to bypass the Apple iCloud locks? it would certainly help make all those locked devices you have, semi-functional (even if not fully functional).
I think that the best this apple could do about icloud locks is to make a button to show the owner's contact info.
This desperately needs to be added.
Home button > Show owner contact info
If home button is broken, simply make it so starting up the phone brings up the setup screen immediately with that home button pop up
4:37 "to ensure our new seal will be seated in correctly" sounded a lot like "seated incorrectly" for a moment. Gave me a good laugh!
These video's are always so satisfying to watch :)
Haven’t seen one of these types of videos from you in a while
If Apple really cared for the environment, they would allow TouchID and FaceID replacement (with full functionality again) for independent repair providers. Same thing for the replacement and repair of batteries, displays and cameras, repairs that return full functionality without those pesky warning messages or crippling them.
The only they care about is money and all other things they pretend to care about is just a disguise to make more money. If they actually cared about privacy and human rights, they would have rejected the Chinese government's request to handing over users' data.
hey man i have seen all your video, you do a quiet good job ,had a question what you do with these all repaired ones?
Red Screen on the iPhone 5s (at least) can not only be caused by a corrupted NAND chip, it can also be caused by bad data lines for the front camera.
I totally understand your point of view regarding the activation lock, but take into account that the current activation lock essentially kills the stolen phone market. This is specially important for countries with really high crime rates. Still they can salvage the parts but not the phone as a whole, and this essentially helps to keep your information safe and your phone from ever being sold again after being stolen. The only thing I would change is to add easily accesible contact info so that the owner could potentially unlock the device for the purposes you propose while still keeping the phones away from the stolen market.
No it doesn't protect shit. Anybody can sell you a phone then report it stolen 6 months later to get insurance money, even if you legit paid for the phone, then it becomes blacklisted.
If you want your info safe, a reset will delete all your information. So there's nothing to worry about there.
Icloud is straight BS
Hugh you have a lot of patience man what can I say. If I fully restored a phone and then the screen got ruined by the adhesive running into it, I think I would’ve smashed the phone into pieces out of frustration 🤣

*Apple taking notes*
2:21 It is actually because in 2018 Apple accidentally resigned every single version of iOS, but only for a few minutes. So many people were downgrading to iOS 9 that the activation servers became overloaded, causing errors when activating iPhones on iOS 9. Apple has not fixed this issue since then to try and force people to upgrade to a newer version of iOS.
Hey Hugh I’m sure you can agree with me the iPhone 6s is one of the most repairable iPhone unlike the 11/12

Hearing that Apple intentionally puts blocks on repairs of their phones makes me wonder why anyone is still buying their products?
Great video, I noticed a few days ago that my 6s on iOS 9.3.5 suddenly asked for reactivation, I was wondering why this happened but thankfully it did successfully reactivate without forcing me to update. It's crazy to what extent Apple goes to force people to update.
@@harassmentisbad1046 Yes I already did, thanks for pointing that out. I've been saving it on iOS 9.3.5 for a long time.
@@harassmentisbad1046 I guess it might be affected as well.
Hugh, sometimes the RSoD on the iPhone 5s is caused by the front camera or battery. One time I had a 5s that had the RSoD but the cable on the battery was damaged and when I put in a new battery and unplugged the front camera it turned on. So keep in mind that some RSoD iPhone 5s is caused by the front camera, not the NAND Flash Storage on the board.
that rsod iphone 5s reminds me of a ps2 rsod
13:01 I was expecting this to happen as soon as you put this adhesive remover on a fully assembled iPhone.
Yes, Apples activation locking system makes me angry too.
It's like they are the only ones who must be the ones to resell.
😡
Yes
Apple had good intentions to prevent theft but it backfired as some recycled device get locked
Only intentions was to make more money. Nothing else
The iPhone 6/6+ backlight seems to be quite fragile. I broke mine while cleaning the mute switch with some IPA...

Hugh taught me how to fix iPhones. Thanks Hugh.
I like how you rescue old iphones and give them a second chance❤❤
Every time you bring up the iCloud Lock story, I always feel down. I wish it could be reworked to be better, as not to create more e-waste as it is, but the incentive for more profit always will be there, which sucks. It means we'll lead to a future that might not be as bright as we can hope to be.
You have to admit though, most iCloud locked phones you see are stolen. Sometimes broken phones that are unable to be signed out of are locked because they're broken, but don't glaze over the fact that peoples phones are stolen and resold all the time. Whether or not the iCloud lock deters criminals from stealing and reselling phones is still up for debate, but regardless, thats usually the case
Bluecolty I’d say roughly half give or take. A lottt are broken or resold and they forgot the account is on there and no one has a way to contact the original owner (I work at a repair shop and see a lot of cases)
@@Bluecolty so trying to track down the original owner might get you arrested for being in possession of stolen property? Even if you got legit possession of the device from an ebay seller?
Oh, also in most of the cases the icloud lock doesn't deter criminals from stealing apple devices
@@Bluecolty even if a phone is stolen and resold, it can be sold for parts, and still be worth some money.
@@dgamezonu2693 would you want your stolen phone being broken down and sold for parts?
'It took a lot of alcohol' 😜... so how many gin & tonics Hugh? Another superb video!
You are right about the rotating home button
Another job well done sir!
Damn that alcohol accident was really unfortunate. Btw, what about trying out tools like Sliver for iCloud unlocking?
Least it did a great job to demonstrate how strong the adhesive was, if he used enough alcohol for it to be completely absorbed into the backlight. Just to prove the point.
Checkra1n is also an option
I think some features are not gonna work if its icloud bypassed
Thedingusmaster420 yeah, although checkm8 is just the exploit, the og tool isnt free though. Sliver is free and can do icloud untethered bypass on A10-A7 devices. It also uses checkm8 exploit btw
the luck here is amazing
With each video of yours, rights to repair become stronger
Your vids are super entertaining
Absolutely love it
Calming too haha
Excellent video Hugh as ever, love your channel. However this is a rare time I’m going to disagree with you about activation lock. It is a complete pain if someone genuinely did intend to sell their phone and forgot to unlock it, but otherwise the beauty is it takes a massive incentive away from anyone hoping to steal a phone. I’m not saying it would stop them entirely, but it does provide a huge disincentive because by design it cannot be removed without the owners consent. Even a 90 day grace period would make the phone hugely more valuable to thieves willing to bide their time. So for me, it has to stay, as annoying it can be for the wrong reasons. A better solution might be better software integration, for example a UI prompt if someone tries to reset their phone asking them what they’re planning to do and suggesting they may wish to disable activation lock and better still provide some suggestions for avoiding the phone becoming e waste.
The thing is most people don’t even know the activation lock exists, and steal phones anyway

The adhesive tape under the battery should only be pulled slowly and gradually, because if it breaks, it's difficult to remove the battery, you have to use a separate tool to pull it under the battery, but just be careful not to bend the battery because it can explode, it's a bit difficult and complicated, but only with enough knowledge and experience, anything is possible, all praises for the video, I learned a lot of things👍🏻
