      Do you have to take immunosuppressant drugs for the rest of your life, to stop your body rejecting the donated heart?
      I’ve always wondered if that causes people like yourself to catch random bugs/viruses easily.
      I think in the next 20 years, transplants will involve taking cells from the recipient and growing a new heart for them in the lab…..No more need for lifelong medication to stop rejection, as it will be your cells and DNA the new heart would be made of……..Imagine no more waiting lists and conditions that would usually be fatal, are now just a minor inconvenience.

    • @allyballybee3201
      @allyballybee3201 Před 8 měsíci +19

      @Acheron666 yes, I have to be really careful. Everybody knows that if they have as much as a sniffle, they don't come near me. I read an article about using the recipients own cells. They use a ghost heart and fill it with your own cells. It's absolutely amazing and hopefully not too far away! It would be fantastic if future recipients could live their lives without anti rejections.

    I'm a nurse and firefighter, one of the worst things I've ever seen was attempted /completed suicide (stop reading if you're easily upset) guy shot himself in the face with a shotgun and it didn't kill him. Based on the condition of the house here's what we think happened; At some point he got up from the bed (obviously site of first shot) and went in the bathroom (massive blood trail and covered sink)..think he saw himself, then went back to bed and finished himself off with another shot (this time to the chest). Neighbor had just got home and heard what was the second shot and called 911. Very sad. Generally, Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem , so please get help- I assure you there's someone who loves you and would miss you deeply!

    My great-aunt had a lot of her face torn off by a train in Detroit around the year 1930. Her parents and baby brother were only mildly injured, but her pregnant mother was not allowed to see her for weeks. She was put into a dark room to die, but her father convinced doctors to try. The surgeons in Detroit learned a lot from her case and today she is 97 with many descendants. Does anyone know the name of any plastic surgeons working in Detroit back then? I’d love to learn more about the techniques used back then to save her life.

      What I do know, is that whoever worked on your Great aunt, would have learned techniques gathered from the wars, and those who had facial injuries, especially blast wounds. I know this because I read a book about it a long time ago. So many young men had devastating injuries to their faces, plastic surgery was really started there, in the 19th century.

      Hi❣️Amazing!
      I'm from Detroit & worked at Hospital's in Detroit & Detroit metro ! Henry Ford a research hospital trained many physicians & was used to teach procedures as well ! You might start w calling the hospital & enquiring. Many hospitals had historical pics of physicians as a tribute - Many hospitals from that era have historical records - but you need to investigate & be persistent! Especially in this historic surgery uncommon in that era .
      Write down the facts of what you do know & start researching ! Google as well ! Other senior physicians as well as patents may know ! Also asking senior plastic surgeons especially from that particular hospital! You might also talk/enquire to the Medical Record's Dept Perhaps there are medical records -Henry Ford was one of the oldest in Detroit ! Praying you find out what you are looking for - indeed she was definitely meant to be here & sounds like she overcame that trauma with the help of God & others to lead a wonderful blessed life leaving a wonderful legacy to her descendants ❣️

    One of the best parts of my job as a respiratory therapist is caring for organ donors during the brain death testing process up until they go to the OR for harvesting. It's sad, but it feels like one of the greatest privileges of my life when I take care of a dying person, and even more so when I know that the body I am protecting and supporting will live on in other people's bodies. I see a lot of long, slow, torturous deaths; deaths that *need* to happen because of old age, but the family wants us to keep trying CPR even though it's not working; and sudden traumatic deaths. There are awful ways to die and there are good ways to die. Sure, I'd like to die at home in my own bed surrounded by family, but dying in a way that leaves my body healthy and intact and *life-giving* is honestly one of the more peaceful ways that I've witnessed. These deaths are usually shocking and tragic, but families often get comfort from organ donation, and if I'm taken too soon, I'll feel a lot better in my afterlife if I know I'm still being useful on earth.

      I was a critical care nurse almost 40 years. I often got the transplant donor to care for up until the donation takes place. I also felt it was a privilege. My father died waiting for a heart and a friend received a kidney. We used to have an honor walk to the OR once everything was in place for donation. Anybody who could would come to the ICU and lined the route to the OR to pay respect for what the donor was doing. Often the donor’s family was present. It helped with closure for them.

      Hmm, after learning how some organ donors did not get emergency care after car accidents where they could have been saved, I no longer support this program. Instead of trying to save the emergency case, there is this rush to harvest the person's organs. It is better if donors are asked if they would like to donate when they either have a terminal illness and are nearing their death or if a healthy individual willingly donates at the time an organ is needed.

    • @Emphasis213
      @Emphasis213 Před 11 měsíci +17

      @@Emphasis213 True. I used to believe in the organ donor system until I heard horror stories from family members about how their son or daughter did not get emergency help after an accident once it was known they were organ donors because harvesting fresh organs is preferred to harvesting organs after the patient is declared dead. And then the hospital profits from something they got for free. That is why I will only donate if my organ is needed by a family member or a relative or if I am terminally ill and know I am dying soon but maybe my organs won't be considered good enough by then.

    I had a friend who shot himself with a 22 rifle. It didn't kill him, but it destroyed the front of his jaw and teeth, traveled upwards under his skin, and fully separated all the structures in his nose. It finally impacted his brow ridge and shattered, ricocheting a bunch of shrapnel into his eye. Of course, his eye was unsalvageable. But they did reconstruct his lip and nose by pulling his entire face down, rebuilding/replacing some of the damaged cartilage, and rerouted bloody supply using donor vessels. It was like $3M, but he looked basically the same. Unfortunately, the trauma of surviving such a brutal suicide made his mental condition far worse. His months of necessary pain management led to a crippling addiction. He got robbed at gunpoint while trying to buy on the street for the first time. He attempted to escape, but they shot at him. One round hit him in the neck causing severe damage to his muscles. He had to suffer through a many more surgeries and recovery. It was just too much. He finally succeeded about a year later.

    After watching Botched and other messed up procedures that I have seen on CZcams, I mentioned that I was disgusted with some of these things that these so called doctors have done to patients. Despite my discuss with these procedures, I always believed in plastic surgery . The plastic surgeon that operated on this girl did a wonderful job as her transplanted face looks fantastic. Plastic surgery has so many positive aspects of medicine. Plastic surgeons who treat injuries such as cleft pallets and other traumas to the faces for example, server burns are very special people because in my opinion they are able to do procedures so the person lead a normal life with very little scaring.

      I used to work as a graphic designer in a Plastic Surgeon Clinic, one of our doctors was the best person you could meet. He did Boob operations, and facelifts so he could get $$ for traveling to get specialties on cleft palate, hand reconstruction and other specialities. And he would usually operate poor kids for free. So all those "useless" beauty cosmetic operations he did ended up financing a lot of his good deeds.
      Sadly, the Dr passed away one night he went to sleep next to his wife and he never woke up. He was about 50. Rip DR Gonzalez, its been years but I still remember him fondly,

      easy for you to say. U don't know how someone else feels. A lot of people that do this, do it on impulse. All of them that lived thru it, were so glad to still be alive, and that it didn't work. If you read Katie's story, she did it on impulse. Yeah she was upset, but it's not like u think. U need to read her story. I have seen and read many stories of suicide survivors that shot themselves. Every single one was so happy that they didn't die. Like immediately. One guy begged the paramedic to not let him die. Besides all of this, you can't just say, "Oh I didn't think about killing myself" well that's you. You aren't them, and you do not know what another person feels. Sure, of course I agree that nobody is worth taking your life over, but it's not that simple. Humans are chalk full of complex emotions. We very often make impulse decisions that we regret later. It's a matter of a lot of these people just not fully grasping their life truly ending. You should educate yourself more.

      It depends largely on the patient and how they cope with the rejection meds. Some recipients have had their transplant for almost 10 years but others failed quicker so it is hard to judge. Other similar thing is with the hand transplants where have worked for over 20 years while others have failed within 2 years, mostly because the meds needed to sustain the new part are downright nasty to the rest of your body.

    • @TheOceanGuard
      @TheOceanGuard Před 10 měsíci +5

      I would imagine that hopefully the face transplant lasts longer since it's mostly skin and the shapes of structures of a face, not something like a kidney which is an entire organ with its own specific job/functions, but i also am not knowledgable enough to say anything definitively! It just seems logical that an organ like a kidney or a heart would come with some wear and tear from being "used" where as a "face" and skin is just...skin? If that makes sense! I hope for the best for this girl! She has been through so much.

    • @vectorwolf
      @vectorwolf Před 5 měsíci

      Skin regenerates more successfully than most organs, after all, part of its function is to endure damage so less durable structures don't. It seems likely to me that as long as she can stave off rejection for long enough, her own skin cells may replace the donor graft. But I don't know if there's less replaceable tissue involved or if it's just the skin. Like, was her nose donor cartilage or was it silicone or some other artificial structure...

      My ex-husband wasn’t an organ donor because he thought the doctors would just let him die in order to take his organs 🙄 I lost a lot of respect for him when I learned that

      @@annachoc3977, which is the right way to do it. People are far more likely to get out of a donor register than into one. And most of us want to help others, so it also becomes the least amount of work for both population and registration.

      @@annachoc3977 I am curious…how does this work? And does everyone know that?
      What interests me the most however is - if they haven’t written anything down, can the doctors take basically anything that is needed? I mean…I wouldn’t mind that if they took the ”basic” organs like a heart, a liver, kidneys etc…but the idea doctors could take my (or my loved ones) face automatically…it really creeps me out. 😳

    I am going to agree with her needing all the healthcare providers...but...you only mentioned primary support like doctors and therapists. I have some news for you...those surgeons couldn't do their job without the help of a surgical team...anesthesiologists, O.R. nurses and scrub techs...or the assistants in her therapy and home health. As a secondary caregiver, it's frustrating to make doctors look so good and not get any credit. I can't tell you the value of a good OR nurse or scrub tech... They have stuff ready before a doctor even knows what they are going to need.
    I'm giving a much needed shout-out to EVERYONE in her care team...bravo guys...bravo

    Yeah, I know someone who got cancer (and it killed him) from the meds he had to take to not reject his liver (no he wasn't an alcoholic). Like he was yellow waiting for a damn liver and the transplant is the "hope". But transplants really aren't all roses.

      You can start by going to your state's DMV/department of transportation (depends on where you get your license) and sign up as an organ donor. They will print it on your license/ID card. You can also write a living will or appoint a health care proxy so you can state your wishes as to which organs and body parts you do want to donate as well as those you do not. Your proxy will be able to advocate for you when you pass.

      @@laurenroberts3821It likely covers every body part unless you made a choice to exclude them. I'm sure you can enquire. The reason we don't think of faces or arms is that there have to be recipients waiting. There are thousands at any time waiting for hearts, lungs, kidneys, livers. Not many waiting for face transplants. 🙂
