Hello Doctor Youn, would you please do a video about REMOVING breast implants. I had implants done years ago and I requested a C cup size and the doctor made me a DD because he felt I would be disappointed in a C. Long story short, I HATE them and want them removed! If you have done a video about this please let me know where I can find it, Thank you in advance.

If someone is happy with who they are that's great. But if that happiness has real consequences they should be made aware of that, especially from their M.D. Many people have serious risks but are happy and confident in themselves. Shouldn't an M.D. point that out instead of say "do you"

@@septicember Exactly! I have been ill since I can remember. I just don't whine about it and people have commented on my weight for years. I hate it because I am super active and eat well and work like crazy! my weight literally has nothing to do with being lazy or eating too much. I have major heart, lung, blood, and blood sugar issues! I also have some weird worrying scarring on my liver for literally no known reason. I don't drink, I get sick if I eat greesy or fatty food so I have always avoided them, and I have never done drugs or anything like that. I am on steroids pretty regularly which has really not helped with my weight and I actually have been scolded by my doctor and told I need to be less active because she is afraid I am going to give myself a heart attack due to my heart not working right and being enlarged! Im not even 30 yet so everyone seems convinced I can't have the major health issues that I have and are convinced that I must be sneaking junk and laying around all day.

But making someone feel worse about the way they look is not going to encourage someone to go to the gym, or an exercise class, or for a walk. It's just going to make them feel more self-conscious, and depressed, which leads to (for me anyway) eating!!

I think a lot of harm is done by promoting an idea that weight loss can't happen if you have certain medical conditions that limit your mobility.
I lost 200 pounds because I stopped binging and over eating.
I stopped treating food as a drug and started treating food as fuel. There's a big difference for me when I am just eating for the nutrition versus when I know I am over eating. It feels differently in a way.
I have pretty significant disability from rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia. I'm on steroids and pain meds and I'll kinds of things.
But I still had to learn how to stop binging. My food addiction is about behavior; is it's not about the food.
Food is an easy drug of choice because it's readily available for most people. But that doesn't mean that you can't stop binging or that you can't stop over eating.
It absolutely is possible to lose weight even if you have extra struggles.
I definitely agree that it's good to acknowledge the positive things about our bodies and how they work really hard to carry us through the world.
But it's also OK for me to not accept continuing behaviors that were harmful to me.
Therapy has been really important as has getting the correct medications for my brain.
But I have been able to lose almost 200 pounds mostly just by limiting my eating to nutrition and not for comfort. I had to learn other things to do for comfort and to deal with stress.
But I really hope that we can turn this narrative around that it's impossible to lose weight. It's absolutely possible.

Well said! What are larger people supposed to wear, burlap sacks? I think it’s sad that there is such a backlash against these women who are all wearing the same thing, and all looking beautiful in their own way. I’ve had to lose weight after each of my children, and it can be a long and demoralizing process. Wearing clothes that fit and flatter your figure shouldn’t be reserved for “thin” people; it can be so motivational to see yourself as beautiful right now and not just in the future when you (potentially) lose the weight! All souls are equal 😊

Yes, it's been the same for me my whole life (I'm 53 now). My dad (French and medical heart doctor) said to us siblings all the time that being fat was the worst and very dangerous and ugly too. None of us weren't fat or close to it but to hear it your whole life makes it hard to look at yourself without being judgemental. As a teen I had no problems and were praised by him for being tall and slim but after my first kid at 24 I gained a bit of weight, about 7kg, that stayed on for many years. One day I had enough and started exercising at home and at my work running the stairs 7 stores (I'm an assistant nurse working in a tall building) intervall training. It worked and I lost those kg in three months. My dad was happy ofc and people around me too. I stayed slim until I got my daughter about 12 years after. I didn't gain one kg being pregnant with her and were praised by the doctor who did the ultrasound that she was able to see the baby perfectly clear thanks to my thin stomach, no fat layers in the way. But after birth I had so much pain for 5 months that made it almost impossible to walk. I was 36 yo then and my kids father was taking care of me by feeding me, literally, nutritional foods but didn't concider the fact that I couldn't exercise as before, just walk a bit with the stroller or baby carrier, so I gained weight again, about the same amount and felt awful. I told him everytime that I was full but he didn't listen and kept feeding me more. Lucky me he's South Korean and knows how to make good and nutritional food, but I was and still am so angry at him that he made me "fat" again (I'm not fat but I feel and see myself as fat) when I was so proud of losing those kilos and stay fit for 12 years. Plus when I was pregnant with her I wasn't hungry and ate well and exercised to NOT get gain weight, so it made me even more dissapointed when I did anyway. My kids are now 29 and 17 and I'm still in the "not acceptable" weight to me... I have to get a grip and do as I did then, the intervall workouts. They worked so well and it was so much fun. Short and fast workouts plus weight training using your body weight at home by following CZcams workout tutorials. But my view of myself is still bad and I feel like a whale if I put on a dress or anything feminine. I hide my arms and now in summer I cover myself up in clothes while women much bigger than me dress in pretty dresses or shorts and shortsleeved tops. I know that I don't look overweight like I think myself and that my weight is "normal" but still, as long as I'm not slim enough I won't accept to show my body. I no longer live with him but we had a long relationship and he always told me I was beautiful and that it was all in my head, he still does, he wants me back, but I can never show myself naked to a guy as long as I look like this. It's like a curse. My friends and coworkers tell me I'm pretty and three guys are in love with me and everybody tell me I look so young and pretty but I still don't see it. My dad ruined my life in that aspect, and to my sister too, but less than me. He died 2018 but none of is ever told him how we felt...my body image is totallt fvcked up due to the french peoples' obsession with being slim...😒 Sorry for the long a*s essay...

Thank you for spreading kindness, dr. Youn. I love listening to your videos because I can see how passionate you are about making people feel confident in their own skin and I'm on my own self-acceptance journey.
I wanted to give a different perspective because people tend to go into the "healthy" argument whenever weight is discussed (althought being overly fixated on health is not good thing either). Mental health is equally as important and it is something that's rarely discussed in this context. Being shamed into "healthy" lifestyle is not something that should be accepted or encouraged. There is nothing healthy in destroying the mental health and confidence of the person one is supposedly concerned about.
I gained 30 kilos over 6 years because I feel secure now and I am mentally in a better place. People in my life took this as me letting myself go because I'm in a long term relationship and started giving me tips how to lose the weight to be more attractive for him and also become "healthier", when they don't know my health status or my partner. My relationship is between myself and my partner. My health is my concern. If someone wanted to lose weight and achieved their goal, I'd be happy for them and I hope they will be happy for me when I achieve my goal of being less focused on being "perfect". Trying to be ones best self can lead down a rabbit hole of self-hate, doubts and insecurities, not having boundaries, not being able to process or express negative feelings, etc. I felt like I was never good enough, or people liked who they thought I was but would hate the real "me". With the help of my lovely partner and a professional, I was able to process my bottled up emotions, let them go, set boundaries for the future and forgive but ultimately cut ties with people that clearly don't want the best for me.
My weight is an "issue" I don't need to fix because once I do, I'd want to fix something else that does not require fixing and I'll never be happy. I get proper nutrition, I'm healthy and I'm as active as my job and other responsibilities allow me to. I'm beautiful in the eyes the people that matter and finally, I start to see myself as beautiful and worthy too.

      @p.s.shnabel3409 Před 7 měsíci +18

One of my relative's best friend was (is) severely overweight. She/he is also a bona fide genius.
She/he went to a school for the gifted (yes, a school, not just a couple classes here and there), earned several degrees in fields as diverse as computer science and law (there may be more, but I forgot the details). Last I heard, she/he had several PhD's.
She/he was also never able to shed that weight. And she/he knew she/he should. And she/he tried so hard; dieting, working out, medication. None of it worked.
When someone pointed out to her/him that she/he needed to lose weight she/he answered roughly like this:"Do you think someone with my level of education does not know that? Or lacks the self-discipline to stick to tough choices for long periods?"
Considering her/his learning schedule was brutal, and she/he probably worked harder than two normal college students combined, that cut people short.
      - - -
If you suffer from either over- or underweight, you basically suffer from the inability to regulate your caloric intake vs your caloric needs.
This can be caused or affected by many, many things. My own life-long struggle to maintain a reasonable (to me) weight has taught me it can be a tendency to turn one kind of food into fat more than another (my kryptonite is literally fat; I can have carbs and lose weight - including sugars), it can be when you eat (no later than 5-6 pm; anything after that turns straight into belly fat), it can be how you distribute your meals (a lot of small snacks vs two large meals; even calories being the same, I don't loose weight when I eat two large meals), what mood you're in (so much harder to lose weight when you're stressed or unhappy even when your intake doesn't change).
And the fun part is this varies from person to person. What works for me might not work for you.
To add insult to injury, many of us who struggle with overweight have a food addiction. That means we WILL overeat if we are pressured too hard. Again, that can be so many different factors: stress, boredom, fear as well as (just like any junkie) ease of access.
Unlike any other addiction, though, we cannot simply cut the root cause out of our lives. Instead, we have to deal with it, face it and overcome it, *several times a day*. Imagine forcing someone who tries to overcome alcoholism to drink a sip of wine/beer with every meal ... and see how they'll do.
Don't get me wrong, I do think we could do better as a society to offer preventative solutions (I think a lack of time and space to just WALK is an obvious one). And we shouldn't lie to ourselves and pretend that having an unhealthy weight (too much *as well as* too little) has no consequences, including social ones (whether we like it or not).
Overall, though, shaming and badgering people for their weight is not going to change or help most of us. Let's do the thing that isn't sexy or flashy: let's be moderate and nuanced.

@p.s.shnabel3409 I really got what you are saying. I have been overweight all my life, not obese and interestingly, up until now at 72, with very few health problems. (My life suddenly turned upside down with excess stress, a daughter with cancer. Within months as her carer, I was unwell with some strange illnesses. Stress is a killer). One thing you didn't mention was the genetic component of size. Weight and our DNA are closely related, and its pretty hard to change a person's DNA. We are born this way, it's easy to see in many families. Fat shaming is ignorant and hateful, and reflects poorly on the haters, not the person who knows 24/7that they are despised for their size.

    • @p.s.shnabel3409
      @p.s.shnabel3409 Před 6 měsíci +6

@@kalayne6713 Yup definitely. Genetics play a role. And people who tell you "it can't make that much of a difference" are either too young (and their handicaps haven't kicked in, yet) or they are among the lucky ones.
As for your own situation, I am so sorry to hear that. It's incredibly generous of you to be there for your (adult) children no matter what.
I had my own run in with stress this year - it was nothing as bad as yours, just a seemingly never-ending stream of bad luck - and ended up with stomach ulcer. Cannot recommend 0/10.

THIS! also being morbidly obese to the point u cant move and being a little overweight but not struggling too much in everyday life because of it are two completely different things. To me there is more important things than being in perfect physical shape. In the end every single person on this planet does things that are unhealthy, even if its just worrying about their fitness 24/7. Mental health is important as well, in my opinion the most important factor when it comes to weight loss. I went through a horrible weightloss journey with ups, downs and different eating disorders, being bullied for my weight as a teen I tried all kinds of things. Went between anorexia and bingeing back and forth. I also was in a phase where I would worry so much that I ended up eating almost nothing all day and working out 6 days a week at least. Until I just had massive breakdowns and my mental health was so bad I ended up in therapy. Was the best decision tho. Working on my mental health has brought me self love over time and acceptance for my body and for not being perfect but overall doing well with my health! You dont have anything from life if your sad and stressed out over your body/health/appearance all the time! I would rather have a shorter happy life honestly! :) I try to eat healthy overall, eat a lot of fresh veggies and fruit, but sometimes go for snacks or junk food every now and then or add that extra cheese simply beacuse it makes me feel good mentally. I stopped monitoring my calories, nutrients, other things I eat and drink. I also have issues with my knee which caused me to be a lot less active lately... I have gained a little weight again but whatever, I learned my body wont stay at the same weight it will go up and down, thats just how it is and thats okay. Being happy with yourself really will give you so much if only other people only stopped judging and worried about themselves. Nobody will say a thing if they see you drinking and smoking and thats even worse for your health... just mind ur business! :0 Weight journeys (loss/gain) can be sooo different for everyone its not always as simple as "just stop eating and start running". Value your mental health at least as much as your physical health guys or you will never be happy no matter how "perfect" your body looks

I was always small but curvy I gained weight the last year which put pressure on my veins and almost died from pulmonary embolisms. So you can have confidence I wish everyone did but I want to see people live more. So no one should be bullied by how they look but just educated on what can happen and than they can choose.

It is sad. When I have babies some of my family tell me to not be so focused on losing weight when I simply missed being active. I wasn’t just starving myself… can’t when breastfeeding or the milk will dry up. But for me, any weight over 140lbs I have knee and foot pain. I think that’s something people seem to get… used to? But I guess I notice the change because rapid weight gain (baby) and rapid weight loss (birth, and being able to go on longer walks again).

Not everyone CAN be healthy and it's so arrogant to make assumptions about peoples health purely on their appearance. How about we let people feel good about themselves regardless of how they look?

Thank you for your kind words Dr. Youn. I have had I-cup breasts since I was 18 and a size 3x. Everyone told me as I worked on losing fat I would lose it rapidly in my breasts. When I was 21 I was able to shed 50lb of excess fat, but my breasts did not shrink at all. I started living healthier and built significant lean muscle during this time.
Unfortunately, my insurance was not good enough for me to pursue reduction surgery. Then covid happened, and like many people, I gained a lot of fat back. I now, at 26, weigh more than I did at the start, but because of the density of my lean muscle tissue, I am actually a smaller size (1x on top, 2x on bottom) than I was at 18, and much healthier too.
I finally had a new insurance and approached my GP about my constant breast pain (it feels like being stabbed with a knife), the fact I am developing degenerative disc disease in my spine, and my chronic neck and shoulder pain. The size of my breasts also makes effective exercise painful and difficult, and on multiple occasions I have actually bruised my sternum from exercising too vigorously because of their weight (despite wearing very supportive and compressing bras). With a single 5-minute conversation she diagnosed me with macromastia and drafted me a referral to a plastic surgeon.
Unfortunately, due to my BMI, I was rejected from even being able to be seen for a consult! It is utterly ridiculous that I cannot get the care I need simply because my body has extra fat on it, even though I am a physically healthy person who takes care of myself. There was no assessment for my actual body fat percentage or cardiac/blood health, no measurements taken to determine if I am a good candidate for reduction. Simply a “you won’t be seen until your BMI is under 35.”
To that end, I appreciate you explaining how breast reduction can be incredibly helpful and healing, and ALSO not being critical or discriminatory of people with more fat on their bodies. Despite the pain I’m in today, your words have lifted my spirits. Thank you, Dr. Youn.

I have body dysmorphia, it’s especially hard as women with body dysmorphia to not compare ourselves to others. When I watch this video I think that I most look like the 3X girl but I know from the tags on my clothes that I actually wear an XL so I’m closer to that girls size. I think having that concrete size breakdown is helpful for my mindset, and it’s also helpful to see everyone at every size slaying it and looking great.
