What a great "magic rainbow tie" Fred is wearing that comes on and goes off in several stills, Rick! It even shines through in black and white TV! Haha!
And it always makes me chuckle that Fred is wearing a nice suit and tie in so many episodes -- why Fred would often be so dressed up is a mystery to me! :-)
Depending upon what social class you were in back then.... men usually wore a suit everyday! This is back when men were men and women were women.... men wore suits & women wore dresses!
Desi was a GIANT talent!!!
So true!!
Absolutely! And I also wish he'd been awarded an Emmy for his work as an actor on the series; I think he was great.
This is one of my favorite episodes. So many funny lines. I think I saw this extra cushion from one of your videos. Desi had a macho ego
Oh thank you!
Rick, I noticed something before even watching this video. A majority of the side characters are super short. Episode after Episode. Like Ricky's agent. And many more. This video confirms my suspicion lol
Doris Singleton(Carolyn Appleby) and super-short Bobby Jellison(bellhop/milkman).
I never noticed it but i do love this episode. The interaction between Fred and Ethel was hilarious and seems real. The wrting on these episode was just the best and that's why this show endures. The topics are universal and the comic timing is master class.
And here I thought that it was because he had hemorrhoids!
Ha ha ha ha!!!!! That's a great one!!!!! Thank you!!!!! I should have thought of that.
I always just figured it was for comfort, we had cushions for our chairs to when I was growing up so it looked normal to me.
Reminds me of Get Smart, with Barbara Feldon being taller than Don Adams. In the episode Hooray For Hollywood, when the Smarts are walking through the theater, you can easily see 99 slouching to one side
I never noticed. 😂 machismo about being not so tall. Love it🤣
That's the long and short of it!
I love the episode "Fred and Ethel Fight." One of my favorite episodes. Really funny! I have seen it many times, and I never noticed the extra pillow on Desi's chair, or the lifts on his shoes. I will look for those things the next time that I watch that episode.
This is my favorite show ever! I've probably watched each episodes 100x and I never noticed this.
Your I Love Lucy content is my favorite. I never get tired of what you uncover.
Love Ethel's dress
I guess I am not surprised they went this far but I hadn't noticed some of the tricks they used other than the shoes they both wore .It's a pretty funny episode.
This is nothing. There were and still are so many shorties: Mae West, Carmen Miranda, Mickey Rooney, Alan Ladd, Bette Davis, Elizabeth Taylor, Claude Rains, Claudette Colbert, Maryland Monroe, Alfred Hitchcock, Doris Singleton, Bobby Jellison, Groucho Marx, The Three Stooges, Yvonne DeCarlo, Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin, Marlene Dietrich, Gloria Swanson . . .
This in one of my favorites. I STILL crack up watching her hobbling around to save her henna rinse and tossing it out the window.
I liked this episode. I never noticed the chair cushion. I'm surprised they went through so much to keep the difference in their height unnoticeable. I'm only 5'3" and most every Woman I'd ever been with was taller than me. Even my Ex Wife was 5'4". Women aren't big (pardon the pun) on short Men. My Father at 5'7" was 5" taller than my mother. I grew up seeing Men taller than the Women they were with so to me it seemed like that was how it was supposed to be. I dated 2 Women who were 6' tall.
Did anyone ever actually play that ever-present piano in the series? Thanks, Rick.
Yes, Ethel played it several times
Thanks, I didn't recall that.😄@@ricknineg
@@ricknineg Could VV really play the piano? It was obvious that she was a great singer.
@@MsBackstager yes, In the next series "The Lucy Show" ( the black and white episodes before Lucy moved to California) Vivian Vance played the piano many times and you could see her hands on the keys.
There is an episode where the four are gathered around the piano singing old songs, then Fred and Ethyl go to their apt downstairs, bang on the ceiling for the Ricardos to shut up, and a feud ensues...
Silly as it seems, I get it. Times were different, cultures and traditions were different, and Desi Arnaz was a product of all that, bringing it into the character development of Ricky. Luckily things on the set didn’t get too crazy or any actor taller than Desi would have to stand in a hole while filming on the set! 🤣 Great video Rick. 👍🏻
🪑
How cute ,at the closing you have yourself with Lucy on the chocolate factory assembly line👍💕👨🍳🍫
Fred and Ethel fight? I'm sure they did plenty of that off camera.
Viv and Bill
Totally surprised, I never noticed it and I have watched this episode numerous of times. I think I have heard on one of your other videos that you said something about Lucille Ball being taller than Desi Arnz. It is pretty cool knowing these other facts. As always, thanks Rick for another great video ❤!!!
excellent video with a clever topic. I love learning intriguing facts and I Love Lucy is my favorite classic show. Keep up the great work
It’s always cool to hear about stuff like this regarding I Love Lucy. Just when you think you’ve heard or seen it all, there’s always something you didn’t know before, such as the cushion on Desi’s chair, though I think I noticed it once years ago, but then sort of forgot about it later on. Thank you for the video Rick, I hope you’re doing well. Keep up the great work and have a great day!
this was a good episode and this was very interesting. waiting for the next one. God Bless and take care Rick.
Hey Rick, your videos and explinations of what goes on in tv shows and on filming locations has sharpened up my eye sight and enjoyment of everything that I have
watched my whole life...thanks!
I do remember this episode. Very funny 😁 I never noticed this stuff. But I remember the information from your videos, Rick.
I am trying to be hopeful Rick 👍
I actually did notice the cushion in Desi’s chair, but it was only because of your previous videos that I suspected it was because he wanted to appear taller than Lucy. You always have such interesting and insightful videos, Rick. Thanks for sharing your observations and thoughts with us ❤
OMG, I have seen this episode many times, but never noticed the extra cushion on Rickey's (Desi's) chair!
Very cool 😎
I’d love to see you do a video on the “evolution” of the show. The dynamic of the show changes as the seasons go by… what I mean is… Lucy’s voice changes in season 3 (no longer so high pitched), Ethel become funnier and has more lines (I guess it was after Vivian won her Emmy irl?) , Fred becomes more “loving” towards Ethel, Lucy’s desire to please Ricky all the time fades away, Ricky and Lucy start to bicker more and be more fed up with each other, starting in season 5 Lucy stops being goofy and no longer does a lot of physical comedy. Lucy’s comedy changes a lot through the series
Wow, loved that you noticed this 😮
I would have never known any of this. Thanks so much!
Rick; when I now re-watch the episodes I am looking for the cushions which when you look for them it is so obvious; don't understand why Desi was so insecure about this as he and Lucy were about the same height so the sitting scenes shouldn't have worried him. Love those Cubans!!
I Love Lucy my favorite one fan BIG season DVD 📀 New YEAR Jamestown Lucy Desi Museum Love my favorite one fan BIG Dolls💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖⭐️⭐️🎶🗽
Thanks Rick. I remember the other video. I like this episode.
Hope you enjoyed it!
Is it me, or in some of the screen shots Fred is wearing a rainbow tie? Or maybe I should not have waited that extra day to eat that turkey sandwich.
The lace tablecloth is also rainbow!
I didn’t notice and yes I am surprised that he had to be taller sitting down.
Fred and Ethel are fighting but are sitting on the same side of the table. I know why they did it, but in real life they wouldn't be
It's because they didn't want to have one character with his or her back to the camera sitting on what is the empty side of the table, correct?
I don't think fred was ever happily married to Ethel 😅😅😅
In one of Desi's passport it says he is 5'11' and a half". This episode contradicts that. In one document Lucy is 5'7" and in another 5'6" and a half.
I didn't notice tbh.
Hey Rick- not related to this show - but I don't know how to send you a private msg on you tube. What did you think of Helen Silvers who played "Rosemary" in an early episode ( I think 1951?) called "Lucy is Jealous of Girl Singer"? I never saw such a beautiful woman as a guest star on the show - maybe one other time was when they were in Florida and the two models showed up to take photos with Ricky - but that was later in series - I am guessing the last season where they put the European, Move To CT, and trip to Fla episodes in last season? Maybe I am off.
Invisible pillow: That is the law of the magician. People's eyes always gravitate toward objects or people that are moving. That is also why deer freeze when you encounter them in the woods.
I was always self conscious about my height (being one of the taller kids) in class when I was in school, so I always tried to hunch down and appear shorter. My mom always got on me about my posture. Little did I know how blessed I really was 🥹
❤❤❤❤❤
❤
Google has a number of different heights listed for him every height from 5’ 7” all the way to 5’ 11”
Actor Alan Ladd was dimitive and thus filmed either by being on top of a box or his leading lady being in a ditch.
it could be the angle of the chairs vs the table in the pic vs camera angle but desi's chair seat (the wood part) looks lower than lucy's.
my guess would be that (without seeing a wider shot - i'm writing this at 2:49 paused in the vid, nor am i a fan of L.B.) this height thing with the chair was S.O.P. in the show & maybe the stage manager muffed the proper chair placement (silly as it sounds...) or the chair legs were at one point cut down to be lucy's 'permanent' chair to maintain equal height between them.
overall, (if i am correct) nothing a simple chair swap couldn't fix (is desi always on the right side?) & you would think the cast & crew would know this....
just speculation on my part...
then as i finish watching the vid, rick drops a line across the chairs....
oh well,....
I'm surprised that the extra cusion is out in the open and not covered up.
Am I surprised this was done? Knowing the reason why, I suppose it isn't surprising. The question arises, however, as to why he married a taller woman.
Love
I've thought the same thing many times myself! if he was so self-conscious about his height, why would he do that? Makes no sense, except Lucille Ball definitely was beautiful! Maybe it was that!
If memory serves, she followed him to wherever it was he'd gone.. chasing HIM.. not him chasing her. Her eventual opinion of him may not have been so good, but it's because he was a good businessman that we have the show at all. He insisted it be shot with movie film, which was expensive. The producers refused, so he said he'd pay for the film AND keep them. The producers okayed that, and here we are.
Hey Rick, since you see everything, why are there so few ashtrays on the show? Everyone smokes. I understand times were different. I understand cigarette company Phillip Morris was a sponsor. That is why everyone smokes
Desi had quite the ego, not just his height, youll note of all the actors he could have picked he picked some old washed up alcoholic one and even though the Mertzes were landlords in Manhattan they were always portrayed them as very poor living a dingy aprtment, desi didnt want any competition.
None of the leads on tv shows do! Their friends are always less attractive- The Dick Van Dyke Show, Mary Tyler Moore, Full House, Three's Company....
??? Desi is 5'10 and Lucy is5'7 how is Lucy taller then Desi???
"in heels"
the magic of footwear that can make you taller than you are
@@elisadjones "It was a big day for bctbird2 as the whole wonderful world of shoes opened up..."
Nobody wants to suggest the obvious, yawn.
