This is easily one of my favourites movies of all time, i love it, and feels kinda close home being from Argentina. Two interesting facts about this movie, all the actors except Carrot and Knockout Ned, were actually just people who actually lived on the ciudade de deus, hence sadly some of them just got back to the life that they were acting about. The other thing is that in my opinion this is one of the best edits on a movie that i have ever seen, and it was the first movie that the editor work on, of couse he won the BAFTA Award for Best Editing and was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Film Editing. And City of God was listed as the 17th best-edited film of all time in a 2012. Cool archivement to have on your first work :)
Edit: 32:20 You're absolutely right, they found the actor right there on the favelas.

@@guyfromthe80s92 Damn the studies. The only reason people call on those studies is to justify this abhorrent behavior. To act like because someone grew up in a shitty way that means they have to be shitty. I live in a poor neighborhood. The mother fuckers that participate in stuff like this aren't some charity case just lashing out cuz they have nothing, they're evil people who feel the world owes them something so they decide to take everything they want by force from good people specifically because they know they won't fight back. Notice how Li'l Ze always has some kinda jewelry and nice clothes on, same for some of his higher ranking gang members. Also notice how Ze and his gang never go to rob rich people or stick up CEO's and threaten to murder them. They always have money to flaunt and always have gold chains and nice guns. They're not poor at that point. They could easily use that money to go live somewhere nicer but no, they always choose to hang around the poor area so they can keep exploiting the actual good people and the unfortunate. I'm sorry for the rant but the vibe I always get from people saying "oh this is cuz of poverty" as if money and nice materialistic things would suddenly fix these demon's habits just rubs me the wrong way as someone who grew up and still lives around these scumbags. They are evil, and no money or better conditions would change that.

Hi Bro, as a brazilian born in City Of God (oh, yeah...) i'm saddly to tell that not much was changed. We're opressed by "the guys" you know and by the police as well, sometimes ppl should pick a side just to survive and yes, police shoot, not just drug dealers, but even common workers like dogs at the streets. We live in a place full of pridefull and honest people, we just want peace but... the cops take the money, "the guys" wear militar guns, when the money isn't enough they just make that operations and time for time kill innocents. Our politicians? They're part of this, leading the police and being owners and friends of the landowners who are the "big fishies". Sorry for the bad english btw. Nice reaction.

The witch doctor you see is what most people in brazil would call "Macumbeiro" with "Macumba" being a name people give to traditions, chants, rituals and spells that come in the afro-brazilian religions, and the priest there is speaking in a dialect that sounds almost like a broken portuguese, the same way that french creole is with french but its sort of a bad term because its too vague, just like how people call everything creole "voodoo", but for all intents and puposes its indeed brazilian vaudou

I was with the guy that was originally from Albania for several. He was always very happy and very satisfied with very little. One night we got really trashed and he really started talking to me about why he left Albania his story reminds me so much of this movie. In fact my first time seeing this I couldn't help but think of him like over and over again. He said one of the biggest reasons his family had to leave was because they had been literally been robbed so many times but they no longer kept things of value in their home. And he said you can just walk outside and you'll see ten-year-olds 12 year olds walking around with giant guns. Luckily his family was able to pool their resources with another family and they came to America in the early 2000s. They opened a small restaurant and they have been incredibly successful. My heart sincerely goes out to people who grew up like this. I hope that anyone who has made an effort to leave these sort of upbringings behind just know that I applaud all of your efforts and wish you the absolute best.

fun fact: the "voodoo man" is actually a Candomble priest, a afro-brazilian religion consistent in the worshipping of ancient entities and orixas.
the one talking to Lil Z was a entity, incorporated on the priest, he renamed him while giving him a necklace called 'guide', a symbol of protection and manifested energy of the entities. he warned that he couldn't have sexual intercourse with the guide on, or a big misfortune would fall above him, and, as you can see, he didn't listened, and in the worst way possible.

I think this scene is sensational, when Exu Sete Caldeiras says that he cannot have sex with his guide, at that moment he seals Zé Pequeno's fate, as he already warns that he will have the power he seeks so much, but from the moment he leaves from there he will reap everything he sowed, and when he rapes Mané Galinha's wife it was the end point of his journey, it was there that all the power he had guided him to a crossroads where all paths led him to certain death, that's enough Observe that after this act his decline begins. I think this scene is cool, showing a complexity that goes beyond the physical, and becomes spiritual as Exú's power follows a dualistic aspect, it is an entity that flows between good and evil, he grants power, but warns you that In this life everything we do returns. Whoever sows death inevitably reaps death

In the beginning you wondered if you'd know any of the actors in this, so I wondered if you'd recognize the actress playing Angelica.
That's young Alice Braga in her first feature film. You may know her from I Am Legend, The Suicide Squad and a TV series called Queen of the South (never watched this one myself, wikipedia says she's in the starring role).
Funny thing is that Angelica, like Thiago, is one of the story's representatives of the upper middle-class kids in Rio who sometimes end up mixed in with the drug trade, and Alice Braga herself was not from the hood like most of the other actors. She's the daughter of Sonia Braga, one of the most famous actresses in the country, who herself also got some international recognition, even winning a BAFTA award and getting a handful of Golden Globe nominations in the 70's and 80's.
Knockout Ned is played by Seu Jorge, a local musician. You should look him up, he's good.

Sad to say not much has changed in Brazil or many south American countries. And pretty much the same reasons as always, being poor, having no future, no job, no chance at life...nothing. Drug dealing, gangs...etc are all people know in the cycle. Though one big thing is in the big cities where you think things would be better, you then have to deal with corrupt leaders who have corrupt police on their side. So just another form of issues even with the not so poor.

@@SuguRakuNiShiteYaru I think it was the commando vermelho, the red command or something similar. The pcc did not come from nowhere and if you remember the end of the movie takes place in the early 80s

You just got to the 'Racism is not a problem in Brazil 101"... we pretend to discriminate against luck of money... but the people most afflicted with this malady are almost majoritarily black. As a Brazilian American, I can assure you that over there racism is away more prevalent than here in America. In Brasil racism is Institutionalized

Such a shame this film goes under the radar. Being a foreign film and featuring a cast that is predominantly black has nothing to do with it though, RIGHT?! 10/10, great reaction.
