- In 2018, a painting by the street artist Banksy, titled Girl with Balloon, was sold at Sotheby's London for £1.1 million pounds or $1.5 million US dollars, but just after the gavel came down, someone in the audience used a remote to activate a hidden mechanism in the frame of the painting, which was designed to pull the painting down through a shredder.
But as it was being shredded, the mechanism failed and the painting stopped half way, and has remained that way ever since.
Well just 3 years later in October 2021, the painting went up for auction again at Sotherby’s London, and sold for a staggering amount no one predicted.
The renamed painting is now called ‘Love is in the Bin’ which had nine bidders battling it out for 10 minutes, with a final winning bid of £16 million pounds or $22 million US dollars.
Thanks for watching.

People are starving to death and others are spending millions on dumd shit like this. I guess no one got the point aye Banksy.
Instead of spending money on a computer so you could write stupid comments on youtube, you also could instead have chosen to donate that money to help those starving to death that you mentioned. Who are you to question and judge others for what they choose to do with their money?
@@amazingusername8925 Can't lie bro if i had the racks to spend millis on amazing artwork whilst my fellow bruddas in the same country let alone around the globe can't afford a bowl of rice that same evening, i'd be buying a lot of drugs
@@amazingusername8925 That's the mentality that Putin loves most. "Everyone's corrupt anyway, to hell with it, I'm in"
dont be fooled, these art auction are mostly for money laundry, it is not really about the art itself.
Virtue signal much?
Nice, never knew this got resold.
I really feel like this teaches us something super important, but I can't put my finger on it.
maybe it's that art can literally be anything and people will pay lots of money for it if you are well known.
I wonder how much banksy could get if he sneezed into a tissue then put it in a waste bin and called that art.
@@WonderWorldYTC perhaps this is why he remains anonymous, so that his garbage gets left alone
That people spend large amounts of money on things that truly don’t matter.
It teaches us that some people are freakin' morons. If rich people need to throw money away for tax shelters or whatever, they need to do so at feeding the hungry or medical research etc. I would be embarrassed to pay $1. for that.
maybe there isnt one
My logical brain just melted.
What I find most hilarious about this piece of Banksy's artwork is that the £16 million was paid while he's still alive. Can any of us imagine what any of his works are going to sell for once he departs this world? I'd find it truly hilarious if all of his artworks had built-in self-destruct mechanisms as soon as he dies and that they'd spontaneously combust on that sad day....he'd certainly have the last laugh on any of those so-called art 'experts' and the rest of those overly rich 'collectors' of his pieces, wouldn't he?
Honestly what surprises me is that he is still unknown. Because let's be honest, I'm good with an air brush. I could make something that looks similar to his style and call it a "Banksy" piece. And who can challenge me on the that? How do you know this whole comment is not just a big ploy to throw you off the trail because I actually am Banksy? As an artist let me say...God I hate the modern art world. 🤦♂️
I find it hard to believe Banksy should be referred to as him/he…
Just wow. I laughed when it happened live.. now I guess the owner is like an NFT owner.
He will never get that 16 million back, but he does have a story behind a piece of art on his wall, to impress future humans for 30 seconds, lol.
future rich humans like him
Excellent summary! Just to note that it is very likely Banksy does benefit from the sale of his art through the Artist's Resale Right (under both EU law and also enacted in the UK). This is a percentage taken from the sale and directed to the artist (although I believe it is capped now, so not too much can be made from this).
but if no one knows who he is, how do they send him the money.
I was curious what happened with the original bid. She decided to keep it anyway. Smart move. 1354% profit in 3 years.
yeah, I am sure it will go up in value in time, but 1 million pounds to 16 million pounds in 3 years is great profit.
I get how you can buy something you don't understand because in general it will only appreciate in value, like Bluechip stocks, Bitcoin or old cars.
but I will never understand art like this selling for $22 million dollars.
Money laundring
@@RibanLegna that only work if you can resell it without losing 15 million in the process
Snobbery and one-upmanship among the elites. It's something they can brag about owning
The old Proverb comes to mind for whomever purchased this "work or art"...'A fool and his money are soon parted'
I also like the corruption of that phrase - "a fool and his money are soon partying" 🤣🤣
How many people could you feed and for how long? What a disgrace.
Imagine paying 16 million pounds for a piece of paper smh.
shredded paper at that
Obviously no one will do that, it is for money laundry when it comes to art auction
Banks is probably a drugs dealers accountant
It's time to introduce a 2% artist's royalty.
2% of every auction-sale of every unique work of art (painting, statue, self-shredding painting, ...) must go to the original artist, or in their absence, to a well-respected secular charitable trust.
Whether 2% or 20% - it doesn't matter a lot.
Remember, 2% is a smaller amount than Sotheby's commission...
god you are a cringey child. that’s ridiculous and you’re silly for even thinking that’s something you can do to private sales. are you gonna get the IMF and every first world country to adopt a law….. the funniest part is you saying ‘it’s time to introduce’ as if your suggestion is feasible in any way
so sad! there's a reason he did that, but the bigwigs don't always get it!
This is stupid and what's even stupider is that some one would buy a damaged art piece.
It's a false statement did receive funds from sale
Salm kenal sobat
Banksy has agents, just like anonymous writers. He definitely gets paid (though this whole nonsense completely defeats the point he was trying to make 🤦).
You are stealing videos from other channels. You have been reported.
money laundering at its best
It's money lundery
