- I backed the Kokoni Sota upside down 3D printer on Kickstarter so you don't have to. In this video I discuss this unique printer, what its strengths and weaknesses are, and what my outlook is for their Kickstarter campaign.

The simple fact that they're advertising taking a picture of something and then being able to print it leads me to believe that this whole thing is at least somewhat scammy. Not saying they won't deliver a product but they're obviously promising things in ways that aren't actually possible.
I think this is actually one of the more believable parts of their advertisement. Photogrammetry isn't new, we will see how well they can implement this. And for "scanning" people with just one picture, they probably just have a database of a few people and wrap your picture around one that matches you the closest.
@@Brainwash110 it's not new but it's also not good. You really can't just take a picture of an object and print it out. Even many pictures usually result in a poor 3d object.
Maybe they are matching to a database and printing generic models but that's misleading at best.
Their 1st mini printer Ec1 that's already been released actually have this features & yes it does work so no its not a scam. There's a lot of CZcamsr's that review & have positive feedback on their 1st mini printer about the AI scanning tool & how easy it is to use. This goose with less than 5k subs seems like he hasn't even tried or used their 1st printer & seems to be the only 1 that saying it's a gimmick.
@@mischifhn looks like it'll do avatar modeling which means you can take a picture of your face and it'll slap that on a 3d bust. It also has the ability to create a 3d model from a bunch of pictures using photogrammetry. Neither is these are new technologies and neither are the promised "take a picture of anything and get a model of it".
I backed this also, but I think it is more likely I will cancel. This is not ready for prime time and I think they went TOO far before the kickstarter. I think they wont be able to back out work theyve done. This machine is meant for total beginners.
5:42 It should not get any layer shifts because of the closed loop drivers. If it somehow does shift it wont recover because it doesnt think it skipped.
7:48 I actually disagree here. Kickstarter is best for sending out preproduction units. Kickstarter really isnt for final designs. A lot of people use it for that purpose, but that not great.
Good points
K R A L Y N 3D was the first 3D printer that has the upside Down that I have seen.
The reason for that design was an ability to make a very COMPACT printer, that can be cramped into a filament box!
czcams.com/video/X_QLxTVtyng/video.html
So that idea with a clear build plate with an upside down design, is DEFINITELY borrowed from that design.
Great find, and good point about them focusing on the product, not the general software.
Thanks for sharing your video with all of us 🙂
Ah, interesting. I hadn’t seen the Positron before but looking at it now it looks remarkably similar to the Kokoni Sota. Too close to be a coincidence I think.
Their promo of the side by side with Bambu and the water glasses is fraud. You can see the whole machine moving, and they deliberately don't show the bottom. I'm guessing they removed one of the rubber feet. If they're willing to intentionally lie about that, what else are they willing to lie about?
Yeah, that seems pretty suspicious. It also looks like the z axis of the Bambu is moving simultaneously with the x and y, which is not how the printer actually operates.
This looks like the positron v3 3d printer.
a bit, doesn't it?
Thank you! Re: burning money; I once spent one, and then a second, $20 bill asking for dueling pianos to play In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. A 17-minute drum solo, on pianos. They did an amazing job! Thank you for the memory. This printer looks promising, getting one for my nephew in the next month so doing some "shopping." Thanks again!
That sounds like a great use of money 😂. Thanks for watching!
Nobody commenting that every video of the printer has a totally different toolhead
Ah, I didn’t even notice that until you pointed it out. Sketchy…
Ich habe einen Bambu Lap und freue mich auf den Kokoni Sota!
I've only seen 5 spools in their AMS. I asked in a FB post about where the other spools are. Someone said the base hold 2 spools but it look like its only one. Also if it was 2 in the base wouldn't at a minimum be a 2 color printer?
They say "7 color" but pictures and videos show always, always 5! They are a mess!
As for upside down, i used a Creality CR-10 PRO V2 upside down for over 3 months, with a glass bed it is absolutely hilarious figuring out where and when the part will drop when it cools!
2 color printing supposedly is included with the base printer. So, it's 2 + 5.
[ Their advertisement is pretty scammy still... ]
Well there are others that made printers up side down like the positron v3 diy printer
Good luck with this project. We're all interested and we all have legitimate doubts. RE: printing upside down... I'm guessing, they have a vacuum build plate?
More troodon 2 videos needed please 🥺
I have a few in the works 😄
I backed for $2 so I can see and comment on what happens. I will be getting the LDO motors version of the K R A L Y N 3D printer. Their intentions may be good but I don't see this getting delivered starting in August. They didn't get it to work when they were going to have Sexy Cyborg review it. You would do better to spend your money on the bambulab P1P or the creality K1. I may be wrong but I don't see this ending well.
Could not agree more regards app and add website for the earlier EC1 printer, which currently does not work. Support leaves much to be desired. It requires cloud storage, no facility for local printing. I believe the main problem is with cloud storage maintenance. I am not inspired to go SOTA if they can't correct simple problems in a timely manner on the EC1.
Mmmm ... had to scroll forever, to finally find the Sota's print-volume: 200x200x200mm
Way too small for my needs.
Anyway, I agree with your points on the gimmicky nature of the marketing ... doesn't bode well for this company's future.
So, $800 for a tiny printer that may or may not ever actually exist? I think I'll pass.
That’s probably a good call 😅
I saw this on kickstarter, and without knowing nothing about 3D printer have big doubts… mainly by reading the comments on the site. I doubt this product, if it works will be a game changer. I would love to see a review of the K1 or K1 max; will creatily send review printers to people with youtube channels ?
I reached out to Creality about reviewing the K1 but didn’t receive a reply. They may send it to bigger CZcamsrs. I have one on order. Although, I never received a confirmation email and they haven’t been able to confirm for me that they can see the order on their end, despite multiple emails back and forth. Money has left my account. Their customer service is lacking..
@@ygk3d, Support being terrible - that's the Creality way!
i appreciate you backing this scam for me
I thought that Emake3D had badly managed its campaign, coming late in showing something valid to justify the Kickstarter pledge: but these gentlemen, even if they were in good faith, have not managed to show a definitive version of the printer, it is not even clear what nozzle it will have ...short and compact? ...long and bulky?
Yeah, it’s all over the place. Not clear whatsoever.
So, has it arrived?
Nope! It was supposed to ship in August and since then there has been only one update from the company. Starting to look like a scam for sure!
They obviously copied the Positron V3's design, look at the dual fans on the extruder.
Bottle of snake oil for every backer I hear :)
so make an upright resin printer also
Gravity might not be your friend in that application but it does sound intriguing 😅
@@ygk3d well dont flip the resin tank tho
@@ygk3d just flip the print, not the tank
@@ygk3d same way as normal fdm upright, but bed moves down, the resin level is on the top, no glass to pass through
@@ygk3d this is a public domain free no royalty idea btw
When a print un sticks it's going to be catastrophic failure.
Instead of part fan blowing make it suck the correct amounts to keep the bridge up
This is so scammy, buyer beware.
A fool and his money are soon parted. This is a huge scam.
It seems legit just very poorly executed and not all advertised features seem technically feasible.
Its 100% not well prepared and still launched on Kickstarter.
Please dont go to to this slippery road and call something that dont even exist a game changer.
Anyway, thank you wasting your money for stuff like that, so we dont have to :D
To be fair I said gimmick OR game changer. I think it seems to lean towards the former, rather than the latter 😅
Man, the first insights are really bad. I hope you get something at the end...
I hope so too. It’s definitely rough around the edges but shows promise.
Im going to guess you wont get this printer in 2023 nor 2024 if ever
would you still spend your money when you know for sure that it wont be what you want ? that you wont get what promised ?
would it still be fine for your youtube channel to show after the campaign how big scam it was when you knew it would be ?
your video is up for almost a month now, and they still dit not provide a promise they made and more video's are coming up about how the scam start to unfold
I’ll wait until the last day then think long and hard about cancelling my pledge. I honestly don’t think it’s an outright scam, it’s just poorly executed.
@@ygk3dThank you for your reply , lets first define scam, scamming means not providing what promised ( not talking about a "few" missing functions )
lets talk about poorly executed , providing hidden video's from 6 weeks ago and claiming as new , providing same test video's and claiming as new tests , using the text " review" on a ( paid ) showcase video with a broken prototype on the kickstarter campaing , refusing to post new posts on facebook when asking simple questions ( like how supports works ) , promising a proper video today for the past 3 weeks ( so 21 times today and still no video )
Showing images of current "factory" production units when they are still messing with there prototype , showing fake "user reviews" as a review video
the list can go on , i do not call that "poorly executed" anymore
it is indeed true that they got a other project before, that they got a app ( that you can test ) based on past kickstarter , but not even one member of the past campaign is willing to vouch for it and it are 20K ( claimed by them , i dit not even bother to verify )
i mean , if they are still legit and that it is indeed "bad execution" they should cancel the campaign and try again in a few months when they can do it properly and provide the minimum that backers are requesting ( like a closeup , benchy on normal speed not in white .. )
i mean, just read the comment section
anyway, that's all i wanted to say and if you still keep the pledge (take the risk ) then i can not wait to see the final review of the product :D
@@PowerChaos these are great points. Perhaps I’m being too forgiving. I also haven’t kept super close tabs on it since making this video. At the very least they have been deceptive and naive. At the worst, they know full well what they’re doing and don’t care who gets hurt. My intention in backing is not because I believe in the product. As the title states, I backed it so you don’t have to. The idea was that it could be worth “investing” in the prospect of making content with it, even if what I ultimately receive is no where close to their marketing. If I keep my pledge and receive nothing, I won’t be able to make a follow up video, making this a bad investment. It’s definitely a gamble.
@@ygk3d just as a general question ,how do you feel about the project at this moment ? its now 3 month and kickstarter comments are flooding over with no response from developers , love to see a update about it :D
@@PowerChaos starting to feel like the majority consensus was correct… this ship date has long passed and no updates whatsoever. Meanwhile I got a message from an affiliate marketing company asking if I would be interested in promoting their other printer, the EC1. So they’re still operating but unsure if the Sota will ever materialize.
Its on Face Book so it must be a scam
@0:56 there's no way it can do bridging any better than a normally oriented printer. the kokoni is a ripoff of the positron, but kokoni refuses to admit it. @6:48 kokoni chose michael because he's in china and they paid him to make the video. he admits it's a paid advertisement.
Good luck. Everything I’ve read you’re likely to set your money and your house on fire.
I’ll have the fire extinguisher on standby… 😅
@@ygk3d Test outside. 😎
