      They don’t want they tested because if they _are_ the Princes in the Tower, then that can mean that Richard III didn’t have the right to rule, changing the order of succession, thereby casting doubt on whether the current Royal Family should even be the Royal Family.
      Elizabeth2’s primary life goal was not to let the monarchy topple under her watch. So it stands to reason that she would refuse anything and everything within her power if it had the chance of cracking the pedestal her and her family rest upon.
      That’s just my hypothesis, anyway.

      @FLEMNMable Před rokem +4

      @@Annie_Annie__ I really don’t see how the ruler of an entirely separate dynasty murdering his nephews could in any meaningful way affect the current family. The Lancastrian claim is an entirely separate one to the Hanoverian one. They aren’t even the same Church.

    • @Annie_Annie__
      @Annie_Annie__ Před rokem +1

      @@FLEMNMable Edward V wasn’t Lancaster, he was York. The Windsors are related to the Yorks, just not directly because Queen Elizabeth I didn’t have children (her grandmother was Elizabeth of York).
      At least I’m pretty sure that’s how it goes.
      But anyway, it doesn’t matter whether it’s true or logical. It matters whether it’s something that the public could grab ahold of and use to doubt the necessity and logic of having a monarchy at all.
      And the murder (and coverup of that murder) of the rightful king and the crowning of the murderer, thus disrupting the line of succession, might be something for the public to grab ahold of and use as full or partial justification to end the monarchy all together.

    • @FLEMNMable
      @FLEMNMable Před rokem +5

      @@Annie_Annie__ Sorry my bad about the Yorkist Lancaster confusion. I seriously don't see it. The legitimate monarch, Charles II, was literally run out of the country and replaced with a Dutch prince, no one looks back at that as a demonstration of the absurdity of the divine right of kings nor does anyone call for a return of the Stuart pretender. A German house was allowed to queue jump over 20 claimants because they were Catholic. Again no one brings that up in discourse about why we should become a Republic. I just do not see how anyone could think a medieval king murdering his nephews could give any reason for why we would want to do away with the royal family today. What is the fear? That Harry will return at the head of an army of American mercinaries, murder his Father, Brother and Brother's children? Besides I thinks its generally accepted that Richard ordered them killed anyway, no one seems to care much.

      We put bones and human remains in museums all the time. If they’re old enough, people no longer think of them as needing a respectful burial; especially not a burial that would be respectful according to the deceased’s culture.
      If we did feel that they needed a respectful-to-them burial, then we’d have no elaborate sarcophagi and treasures from Egyptian tombs, no wonders like the Terracotta Army, no Oseburg Viking Ship, and on and on back to the Paleolithic.
      And we don’t just learn from grave goods. We can learn a lot from the bones of an ancient burial, about the individual, the culture, the land, the climate, etc.

      @@Annie_Annie__ so if they are the princes we should continue to respect them but if not the heck with it stick them in a museum? I think if we learn whether or not they are the princes we've learned enough from them and they should get to rest. What we do with remains in museums is disrespectful to every individual in them. If it wasn't we wouldn't have various people asking for the remains of the people from their countries and civilizations back.

    • @Annie_Annie__
      @Annie_Annie__ Před rokem +6

      @@ladykoiwolfe The Princes in the Tower aren’t ancient. If the bones go back to before the Tower was built, they’d be ancient.
      The Tower goes back to William the Conqueror. It was one of (if not the) first permanent buildings he had built in 1066.
      So _if_ they go back that far, they’re very ancient.
      This is all speculation anyway. The Royal Family will never allow them tested.
      I’m just pointing out that it’s hypocritical to be precious about the idea of these bones being in a museum, when there’s tons of history museums around the world that have human remains and grave goods and no one acts horrified or upset about it.

    Thanks for a really great video. The Royals have been full of controversy ever since they've been a thing. A few years ago I saw a really good documentary called Britains Real Monarch, done by Historian Tony Robinson, based on the idea that Edward IV was illegitimate - the notion being if I recall, that his mother would have had to have had a 13 month preganacy if it were true (alleging he was born from an affair rather than to his Father, the king). Following this, Robinson traced the family down through the centuries to work out who should rightfully be on the throne now. The results were pretty hilarious IMO - & who can say if they were true or not. The person they traced it to was a fairly ordinary and unassuming Australian republican, who by that definition, couldn't stand the royal family! That would really be worth a video.

    That's correct, it's called the crown estate and generates a lot of money and therefore tax revenue. It's no longer the private property of the monarch, but is owned 'by right of the crown' while they are the monarch, as it was (essentially) signed over to the country in exchange for the sovereign grant.
    The crown costs the taxpayer around £110million a year, through the sovereign grant, yet in the last 10 years the estate has made the government (and therefore the taxpayer) around £3billion. So a net gain of just under £200million a year.
    Even when extra is needed for, say repairs to, one of the palaces the bill isn't exceeded £200million a year. The latest one to Buckingham palace, for instance, is costing around £350million but has been spread over nearly 10 years.
    It's unclear precisely what would happen, in the case of abolition, but it's more likely than not that the assets from the crown estate would revert to the monarchs private ownership. If this were the case it would result in a net loss to the treasury over what is currently the case.
    Like them or not, the economic argument for abolition isn't as strong as most think.

    The biggest argument against abolishing the monarchy in the UK is the fact that they are the largest private landowners in the UK and that land collects over £200 millions annually. According to law, all that £200 million goes to the taxpayers, all 100%, in exchange for an annual salary/expense of around £80 million. That is a sweet deal of a bargain, the royal family pays for itself while also netting the taxpayers a massive profit of well over 100%. If the UK were to abolish the monarchy they would become private citizens and all the money they surrender to government every year would go to them instead of the taxpayers. Thus, it makes no financial sense to abolish a constitutional monarchy that is an amazing bargain to operate.

    I am of the belief that it was the Duke of Buckingham who did away with the princes, most likely on a "won't someone rid me of this meddlesome priest" type of thing. Right around the time the princes stopped being seen, he got into a fight with his BF Richard III (at the time the Duke of Gloucester) and left court. Their fight was so bad that he participated in the 1483 rebellion but weather both kept Henry of Richmond from landing with his troops and kept Buckingham's army literally bogged down in the mud and Buckingham lost his head. Henry sailed back to Brittany, returning 2 years later and then won Bosworth and became Henry VII.
    Richard was an absolute tyrant, who illegally executed Lord Hastings, his brother's former best friend. After Bosworth, Henry ordered his men to give the former king a Christian burial, but he was so hated that after the new king left Richard's naked corpse was put on the back of his limping horse and paraded around the town before being buried in an unmasked grave. His apologists try to say that he was actually the best of kings who has been maligned by history, but they don't treat your corpse like that unless they really, really hate you.
    As for the Sussexes, Archie was never going to be given a title at birth, other than the Earl of Dumbarton, which his parents declined. The only way this could have been because of his mother's race is if George V was psychic, since the rules were put into place in 1917.
    What's funny about Harry's book is that he actually verified the worst rumors against his wife, for example that she was bullying staff and was nasty to Catherine.
    The sales numbers on that book are based on store orders, not actual customer purchases, and since some stores were slashing the price and offering "buy one get a second copy for free" I don't think it actually sold as well as the publisher claimed.
    The Sussexes only get all that money at the end of the deal, after 6 books and multiple TV shows and podcasts. The reality is they really don't have much to sell other than their "stories" about the family, and as they've spent that already multiple times, I don't think they're ever going to see the completion of those deals. I mean, does anyone really want to see their Netflix "romantic comedies"? I doubt it.
    And if I have to hear that stupid soap commercial nonsense again...
