- Preparing, cleaning and storing moss for terrarium and other botanical projects
This is a very simple process but an extremely important steps to prevent unwanted pests, hitchhikers and mold/fungal infections in your botanical projects.
It involves removing twigs and dry/dead grass from the moss and rinsing it in distilled or RO water. Rinsing process is to be repeated a couple of times to get the moss as much free of soil and debris as possible. Once done the moss needs to be stored in specially prepared storage containers/boxes and placed under artificial lights for about 8 -10 hours of photoperiod everyday.

This answers my question! Thank you.
❤Brother, I really appreciate your good projects ❤
Thank you for sharing with us. Your tips were very helpful. I recentley collected some moss and it started to dry up, so i will definitely follow your steps to keep my moss nice and green.😊😊😊
Thank you
Meticulous ! 💚
Hey the plant that you mentioned in your video of identification of native plants and weeds at time stamp 4:00 is evolvulus nummularius and I use it as ground cover at the edges of my pond along with desmodium trifolium. These have a very beautiful flowers.
Thanks for the note. 🙏
Thanks💚
You are welcome
Very useful i got some recently
Thanks
I have only ever been able to collect small chunks of moss at a time, unlike the large sheet in this video, and so the only thing ive ever needed to wash off my moss has been the mud from underneath that comes up with the moss (as most moss i collect is growing on mud). Im not even entirely sure if jts necessary to wash such small amounts of mud off, is it? I end up breaking the moss apart even further when trying to wash it off, then it just looks like algae or seaweeed 😢
Super ❤️
Thanks

How to get some different types of moss from you
It always worth watching your videos always good.
Can you suggest me any fertilizer dousing for Terrarium
Thank you. I do not use in fertilisers in my terrestrial plant terrariums.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist is there any alternative for spring tails I did not find any where
I have always read that moss doesn't need fertilizer, as it extracts the nutrients it needs from the air. Double-check me, though. A lot of places that sell supplies for terrarium and vivarium supplies will advertise 'special' fertilizer for sale that is supposedly good for moss, but i think it might just be a way for them to make money.
Most sources I've read say no fertilizer is needed for moss. That kind of makes sense to me, as moss will grow on rocks not just soil. Also grows on decomposing trees (wood), so you could probably find a piece of tree bark to put the moss on in the terrarium, although I'm not sure how you would clean that to eliminate pests and bacteria.
Can you use ash instead of charcoal? I don't live in an area that is okay to make charcoal and I don't have the budget to buy it. Thank you for all of your amazing information, time, and dedication !
Thank you. No, ash might not work. You can skip charcoal if you don’t have it.
For how many days can we preserve moss in zip bags and where and how to store.for how long it can be stored in freezer
I have kept moss in zip bags for one to two weeks without any issues. Havent tried freezer. Should work for similar time periods i guess. You could try it out and let me know. Thanks.
Hey! I just collected icelandic grey moss and the issue is that it's full of spiders and maybe even ticks. I'm not sure how to remove them since washing doesn't help
One of the cons of collecting moss from the wild. I suggest you procure farm grown moss for your projects.
Nice tutorial! What is RO water? The tiny fish net is very cute.
Thank you. It is reverse osmosis water
@@TheUrbanNemophilist Oh! thanks!
Where did you get the moss from? Site, store? Any information would be appreciated.
I bought it from a local aquascaping store called Airplant Planet.
Hi! Where do you source springtails from?
I source from the wild and even from my garden. More details in this video

Hi, what's your shelving lighting? Can you provide the name of the lamps?
Nothing fancy here. Basic led lights
Can you either do a video, or talk about, what to do about pieces of moss that have would more or less embedded in the underside of it? Do you leave it? Remove some of it? All of it, leave it all?
Sorry but I am not very clear on your query. Could you explain again.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist no worries. So, some moss that I collect, maybe taken from a piece of rotting wood. And when I collect them, the wood on the bottom is more or less, in my own words, infused with the moss.
And if I were to try to remove all of this wood, it starts to tear away at the moss itself.
I apologize for my lack of clarity, thank you.
Can you please know me where did you find the sheet moss?? Did you buy it or collect it?
Bought it from local aquascaping store
@@TheUrbanNemophilist okay, thank you very much.... Actually I live in Kolkata and cannot find such moss here...
Hey! Could I know where to find this kind of moss around Bengaluru?
Local aquascaping stores.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist Thank you!
Careful with the washing… you’ll wash out all the cute microscopic tardigrades (water bears) as they mostly live in mosses.
They do? Didnt know that!
